We are pleased to welcome everyone back with a strong offering of bulls and select females from a great group of breeders. We were overwhelmed by the support last year and would like to thank everyone who purchased a bull or female, as well as everyone who made the time to attend the sale. The evolution of this sale is certainly worth noting. The programs in this sale are striving to access and offer up offspring on some of the most progressive genetics available, all while never losing focus on the proven time-tested genetics. We are confident you will find a bull that will add value to your program at this sale.

We were fortunate to see some much-needed rains in 2022, which I’m certain brought some relief to everyone. It was great to see the green grass under foot of the cattle at pasture and a few extra tons of feed in the fields compared to the year prior. The fall run on calves was extremely strong and the Simmental influence calves were extremely sought after. The Simmental breed allows producers to offer up the heavy steers in the fall, as well as some of the most desired replacement females in the cattle industry. I say this every year, but I do not think we could be anymore fortunate to be in

All bulls 12 months of age will be semen tested, palpated and scrotal measurement taken by an accredited veterinarian. Information will be available sale day.

All bulls returning to sellers’ farms MUST be insured. Bulls can be kept at our farms at no cost up until April 1, 2023. Delivery will be arranged as soon as it’s mutually agreed upon by the seller and purchaser. Bulls will be delivered free of charge within 300km of Olds. Delivery beyond will be arranged at cost.

This last year has been a big one for the Southpaw Team, as we celebrated Shallaine and Brandon’s wedding and eagerly await another chore hand arriving this spring to help out big sister Harlow. We were also extremely honoured to be awarded 2022 Simmental Show Bull of The Year with Coliseum 140H, and proudly showcased his sons and daughters in the show ring last fall and in this year’s sale. With many changes the one thing that remains the same is our commitment to raising high caliber cattle with unique breeding to bring something special to our customers. We can do what we do thanks to the many people who have supported us along the way and we look forward to connecting with you all again. PAW BLK Gretzky 910G is Homo Polled and Homo Black along with being in the top 10% for calving ease and top 15% for birth weight EPD’s. He has definitely grown into a powerful herd bull with so much masculinity and presence to him. He has lots of mass, hip and a very solid big foot under him that has made him and his calves sound on the move. With all that growth and capacity along with great nut size you already know and can see what he is capable of producing. His heifer calves have the depth and mass that he possesses but also have that flashy feminine appeal. His bull calves just keep getting better with age just like him with great hip shape, dominant blaze faced and testicular development. PAW Kings Guard 220K has been a favorite from the beginning, he is packed full of substance, has a ton of presence, style and has a very quiet demeaner. His maternal sib PAW Just Friends 120J was the 2021 Reserve Champion Percentage female as a calf at Farmfair. His dam has produced some outstand ¾ blood calves each and every year that we love to showcase in our show string as well as keep for our own in herd use. This bull has the power and depth paired with a small attractive head that just makes him the complete package.

PAW Kingpin 210K is a long, soggy made bull, with great testicular development and backed by a great pedigree. He is a maternal sib to PAW Juan Pablo 121J, who was Champion Bull at the 2022 Heartland Cattleman’s Classic Bull Congress and was the $35,000 high seller from The Event Sale last year to Wheatland Cattle Company. His dam LRK BLK Ruby 9C (a.k.a Earl) was the National YCS Champion female as Bred and his sire BLACK GOLD Coliseum 140H has been very popular in the show ring. Making top 5 at the Lloydminster Stockade roundup twice, top 5 Alberta Supreme at Farmfair and top 10 in the Agribition Beef Supreme as a yearling and as a 2 year old to end his show career. His dam is out of LRX BLK Ruby 9C (Earl) who is a big bodied, deep bellied, flashy female with those attractive fuzzy ears that have been passed down to this guy.

PAW 249K is a bull that would be a stand out on some first time calvers. With is moderate frame comes a lot of hip shape, length and style. A full sib to this guy was sold as a heifer calf for $8,000 out of the stall this past fall. This bull’s dam is out of the 2011 National Simmental Champion Female S-PAW BLK Whimsical 924W, all of those attractive features that we loved have been passed down to all of her off spring. Such as beautiful uddered females and bulls with great hip shape, this bull gives you the opportunity to pass these great traits down into your future calf crops.

This fuzzy bear with his perfect blaze is a long bodied, big hipped, calm demeanor sweetheart. He is out of a Z cow that keeps on giving us petty marked bulls with those attractive fuzzy ears and big hips. This calf just keeps getting better as he grows. His sire is PAW BLK Gretzky 910G that we are selling in the sale this year as a mature bull. We are already starting to see the herd sire traits come out in this calf and am excited to see him just keep on getting better.

250K is another son of BLACK GOLD Coliseum 140H who is a deep bodied, low birth weight, attractive made bull. He is one that I would be very comfortable putting on first calf heifers. He is an extremely easy going, easy doing bull that has a soggy bull look to him. He is out of a female that we purchased from LaBatte Simmentals that we love for her big, broody cow appeal that she has passed down to this calf. She has a great motherly instinct and calm presence that is reflected in this bull who will be a great addition to anyone’s herd.

PAW 204K is a very long spined, attractive fronted bull. His dam DAINES Miss Sizzling 43C, is one we purchased from Daines Cattle out of the Friday Night Lights sale. This female has been an outstanding donor cow in our herd that has continued to produce outstanding bulls and heifers that we have had the privilege of showing and selling in the elite FNL sale year after year.

Here’s an exciting bull from our ET program. The result of embryos purchased at New Year’s Resolution, this Playmaker ET son has been impressive since birth. Purchased from our good friends at Ultra Livestock and Mader Ranches, the Payton progeny seem to be stamped the same. Dark red in colour, big in body mass and extra look. Coming out of the big time performance bull, Playmaker we believe this bull represents what we try to produce; bulls that will perform in any operation. 206K is a moderately built tank and the thickest muscled bull in our offering with balance and a great look. 201K will catch your eye at the cow palace come sale day. Big haired and square topped, he’s as clean in his lines as you can make one. Coming in calf from a purchase out of Mader’s 2021 Ladies Night Sale, 201K’s dam started her life as a show heifer for the junior division at Mader’s and will quickly become a marquis dam at GLL. 201K is sired by the Ignition who is known to add calving ease and style. This is a solid heifer bull here, 76lb at birth with 12.7 CE, still weaning off at 745. We had a goal to produce more red blaze face cattle while still maintaining the structure quality we have in our herd, so we added WLB Top Tier to the tank and he gave us this fancy blaze bull. Since hitting the ground, 6K has always had that ‘look’ about him. From front to back, his smooth shoulder, strong feet and powerful hip make him the perfect powerhouse bull to add to your bull battery. The dam is a red blaze cow that we purchased from the Harvie Crest program as a calf and she has given us 2 very nice bulls thus far.

KRU MAJOR LAUNCH 21K

21K comes from a cow that instantly stood out to us in the Meadow Acres Simmentals dispersal sale last year, we couldn’t leave the farm without seeing her and she made the 10 hour drive more than worth it. For a cow of her age, 96B is still sporting a picture perfect udder and excellent feet and we consider ourselves very lucky to have added her to our string. 21K is a bull that is representative of his dams greatness as he too is exceptional in every way. Modelling a nice small head, long spine and a big hip, 21K is often picked out as the favorite by those who walk through our bull pen and he is most definitely a favorite of ours. Sired by Springcreek Launch, he offers calving ease as well – we really don’t know why we aren’t keeping this guy for ourselves.

The sire to 5K is Captain Morgan 11Z, which is a bull that is as proven as it gets and we have admired his work for years, especially as far as replacement heifers go, and that’s why we used him- we wanted Captain Morgan daughters. We are confident that 5K will go on to give you daughters of the same caliber. We sold a half-sister to 7 Lazy T 7 Cattle Co. in the fall, and she was a beauty. 5K was born at a respectable 90 lbs and has been the heavy weight in the pen all year long, his performance is nothing short of impressive. If you are ready to add performance and maternal greatness to your group, look no further than 5K.

In an effort to get more blaze face calves, we selected ‘Bankroll 811D’ as an AI sire and he did exactly what we were looking for. 13K is a stout black baldie bull that we have enjoyed watching mature. 13K is from one of our rock solid cows, meaning you can’t find a fault in her with her moderate size, good feet and perfect udder, she raises a calf that we put in our top 5 every year. This bull is the thickest bull in the pen and if you walk through, you cannot miss him.

18K comes from a cow that we purchased last year from Meadow Acres Simmentals. While he was born a twin, you wouldn’t know any difference as he was raised as a single on his dam and did very well. The cows udder quality is noticeable from afar, and we are thrilled she is a part of our herd. 18K has a nice top and a big hip which was inherited from his sire ‘SVS Rancher’- overall, this bull is great to look at and has the impressive breeding lines on both sides to back him up.

Following last year’s sale where we sold 3 full brothers to these bulls, we were excited to have a few more on the ground for the 2023 sale. 407K & 409K are easy to pick out in the pen with the sheer quality of their eye appeal. These brothers are the result of a flush from a Crosby daughter that has proven herself time and time again, passing down her solid feet and length of body. We have kept every heifer out of this cow because we want as many of her as we can get our hands on. We knew we couldn’t go wrong with the Wheatland Red Express bull and we love the result as he adds that extra flesh and calving ease. The donor cow is no longer alive so this is your chance to scoop up the last few progeny available from Kruger Farms. Both bulls are quiet and ready to go to work for you.

GBF MR 109K

This is a structurally correct, hairy bull that is out of one of our top producing mothers. GBF Tammy 11X is an easy fleshing cow with a beautiful udder and a good foot. We sold a bred heifer at Friday Night Lights in 2014 out of her and retained multiple offspring out of this cow including GBF Ferdinand 30F. 30F is a black baldie that is packed full of muscle and big footed, and who sired two other bulls in this sale. GBF 109K is sired by GBF Biohazard 12B, another black bull we raised and took on the show road as a yearling. Biohazard is long bodied, and GBF 109K is looking to grow up to be just like his sire.

TLB 25K is an all-around eye appealing bull. He is good hipped, masculine and long. He is a well-balanced bull and catches your eye every time you walk in the pen. This bull has a long square body, but still carries smooth in his shoulders and has the desirable extra rib. His dam SCSF 6W is a cow we bought several years ago at Checkers and she has proven herself over and over. She is a 14-year-old cow and still producing offspring like GBF 27K, that speaks for itself.

GBF MR 28K

GBF 28K is an extremely long bodied bull, but still has depth of body. He is bigger framed and will work great on cows, but he does have a calving ease shaped head. His dam GBF 29D was a 4-H show cow. She is pear shaped and has a great udder and feet. His sire GBF Ferdinand 30F is a big hipped, long body, stand out bull in the herd bull pen.

Soggy, is the best way to describe GBF 40K. He is an extremely hairy, moderate bull with a ton of middle. He is very wide in his top and has a big butt to follow. He carries that natural soft look. His dam LJR 52C we bought from Oh Kay Farms and has produced females we have retained in the herd. She has lots of middle and is good footed. This bull is sired by GBF Ferdinand 30F, a black baldie bull we raised. 30F is a standout bull in the bull pen, due to his natural muscling and eye appeal.

TLB 7K has style that catches your eye. This bull is packed with muscle and depth of body. He has that smooth natural muscling and travels good in the pen. He is just an overall bull that you can’t help but keep looking at. Even all summer he was a standout bull. The dam TLB 12F has a strong udder and great pear shape. We purchased Deeg 101H who has a strong pedigree, as a RF Capacity 742E on the sire side and NCB Cobra 47Y on the dam side.

With the success of previous years, we’re pleased to be offering up a selection of bulls from our walking sires Oakview Fineprint, Blackgold Rigs and Mark 701G affectionately known as Lenny, as well as a couple of polled options from the Homo Polled Shamrock bull. All of our bulls on offer have been sire verified and tested for the dilutor gene. We strive to maintain calving ease with solid performance in our herd bull battery. This year we were fortunate enough to get some rain just in time to kick cows out to pasture, we did dry up, but the grass was able to hold out for the season. As always, our bulls were raised from birth to weaning strictly on their mother’s milk and the forage in front of them. We are pleased to be working with Country Junction and have the bulls on the 14% ration and are extremely pleased with their development. We still utilize the same philosophy of bucket feeding the bulls to control their intake, as well incorporating some in the silage rations, which every calf on the farm gets. We weigh our bulls monthly to ensure an appropriate rate of gain and strongly believe this feeding regime increases longevity and soundness in these bulls.
