T he 2021-2022 Student Managed Farm Purebred Unit powered by New Holland would like
to extend a warm welcome and invitation to The Round-Up, on March 26, 2022. This year we were lucky enough to be able to attend both FarmFair and Agribition, it was an amazing opportunity to get the calves and the team out on the road and back in the show ring. This year our team faced some struggles due to the drought and increased feed prices. With these obstacles we have had to put more work in to our animals to keep them well conditioned. Given the circumstances they have outperformed our expectations. They are fed to meet their potential and to emphasize muscle development and fertility. We have decided to offer open replacement heifers this year. As a team we have seen these females succeed at both FarmFair and Agribition and have exceeded our expectations! This year’s class of bulls is one of the strongest sets of bulls we have had on offer, we believe that every bull has the performance and power to suit the needs of your operation The OAV cow herd was established in 1938. Females that have been retained to develop the herd, are held up to the highest standards of quality to ensure long lasting and efficient cattle. Over the years our cow herd has been developed by
focusing on structurally sound females that are reliable and easy doing with high quality udders. By using these selection principles in our herd, we believe that the calves on offer can enter any operation and make a positive and long-lasting impact. We are extremely proud to have these calves on offer and look forward to showing them to you. We are extremely excited to present this group of exceptional cattle to you. As a team we would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy year and a successful calving season! Sincerely, The Lakeland Purebred Unit - Powered by New Holland Agriculture

Then after Christmas he surprised us all, he pounded on the weight and transformed into one of our favorite bulls, his sire is the top ten percent in birth weight and top eight percent in scrotal circumference. 12J is a soggy made bull with amazing scrotal development. 12j is the type of bull that will get out and cover your cows in a very short time period.

LAKELAND EQUINE UNIT T he Equine Student Managed Farm, powered by New Holland
Agriculture is excited to be offering two 2021 AQHA yearlings, along with four 3 and 4 year old ranch geldings for this year’s 2022 Round Up Sale! The students have worked hard training these colts under saddle since the beginning of their academic year in September 2021. The geldings have been exposed to rope work from the time they were started. They’ve roped the Heel-O-Matic, pen roped live cattle, drug logs, crossed bridges and tarps, opened gates and have been started on barrels as well as live cattle in and out of the arena. The weanlings were halter broke in September and have been exposed to the arena and everyday activities around the farm, walking over obstacles and trailer loading. Our goal is to produce, select and train quality horses with excellent disposition and conformation. We are excited to share the fruits of our labour at our capstone event, the Lakeland College Round Up Sale, and make new connections with all the great people in the Equine and Beef Industry. Sincerely, The Lakeland Equine Unit Powered by New Holland Agriculture

LAKELAND EXTENSIVE GRAZING RESEARCH UNIT T he Extensive Grazing Research Student-Managed Farm Unit powered by New Holland, underwent a name change this fall but our practices and vision remain the same. Our unit focuses on sustainably raising our commercial Hereford Angus herd through extensive management practices. Although we try to remain extensive and low maintenance in our management and keep handling to a minimum, we are still focused on building a strong, maternal herd which contains an in-depth data bank of herd performance and breed composition. We aim to implement a 365 day grazing plan which allows the cows to graze pasture land and crop stubble as well as bale grazing throughout the year. The Lakeland Extensive Grazing Research Unit Powered by New Holland Agriculture
RESEARCH This fall after bringing the herd home from summer pasture they were grazing on crop stubble and were supplemented with shredded bales. In the second semester we began bale grazing. Our replacement heifers are put through a Residual Feed Intake (RFI) Trial to gather feed efficiency information and to build the herd’s data bank. The heifers are also on a demo involving the use of alfalfa pellets as a substitute to the hay which is provided in their regular TMR ration. Within this demo we are measuring their overall growth and development. MARCH 26 2022

RESEARCH CONTINUED For bale grazing this year we took a more extensive approach than what has is traditionally done and what the units have done in the past. This winter we set out bales in bale feeders to last the cows a week before having to refill. We set out 7 hay bales and 3 greenfeed and plan to lift the feeders once most of the bales are eaten and allow the cows to clean up majority of the forage before moving the feeding site and refilling the feeders. We decided to implement the use of bale feeders in our bale grazing system this year as a way to conserve more feed by limiting the amount of forage that becomes waste. The demo which we are running with our replacement heifers involves 5 head being fed their general grower ration while the other 5 head of heifers is fed a ration involving alfalfa pellets which provide a substitute to chopped hay in the TMR ration. We began the demo by taking an initial body weight and hip height measurement. These heifers will be weighed every 15 days to keep accurate records of their total weight gain and average daily gain through out the demo. We will also be measuring the heifer’s hip height every 30 days to help demonstrate the heifer’s development. As a unit we formulated this demo as a way to determine if processed forage pellets are an efficient and effective feed ingredient to incorporate into a ration to grow and develop heifers with. SMF units were responsible for developing their herd and selecting the animals to auction for their outstanding qualities.
They made plenty of industry connections along the way. “The biggest benefit for me was being able to make industry connections with those big in the Black Angus breed. I also appreciated the opportunity to make decisions for 50 head it’s a big responsibility that helps grow our confidence,” says Bobbi-Jo Foster.
