MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN TURPIN is a professor of interior design and Dean of the School of Art and Design. He teaches the history of architecture and interiors and is actively involved in research. His research addresses the intersection of social values and material culture as it relates to the design of the built environment in late 19th and 20th century America. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Interior Design, the premiere scholarly publication for the discipline. In 2011, he was named one of the top design educators by DesignIntelligence magazine. This year he was appointed to an advisory board of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to provide guidance on the interior design curriculum for public schools. In this role, he will review the state’s interior design curriculum, evaluating course requirements and content to better prepare high school students for college-level programs.
HPU is the only private college in North Carolina and one of only a handful elsewhere to offer students the opportunity to study in programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

“I have spent the last two summers working as a photographer at sunny Camp Chinqueka in Bantam, Connecticut. This experience has been one of my most rewarding, challenging and life changing. I had the unique opportunity to work with staff and campers from all over the world and can honestly say I have friends who live in Russia, France, Austrailia, New Zealand and beyond. Working as a photographer at Chinqueka, I learned invaluable skills about team work, leadership and working in a fast paced environment. Beyond that, I also really grew as an artist and photographer and would not trade my experience at camp for the world. My professor, Dr. Jane Nichols, offered invaluable advice on how to get the most out of this experience to weave into my resume.” — MAGGIE ANDRULIS, CLASS OF 2020
