Each year, High Point University offers a stimulating lineup of unique events for students, faculty, staff and community members. The schedule features a variety of art, music and theatre performances, as well as world-renowned thought-leaders and speakers, including General Colin L. Powell, Steve Wozniak, Steve Forbes, Malcom Gladwell, Seth Godin, John Maxwell, Former First Lady Laura Bush, Bill Cosby, and Muhtar Kent. Guest speakers are selected as part of an intentional effort to provide students and the community the opportunity to understand diverse viewpoints, positions and backgrounds. Many events are part of the Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant Series. The grant series assists HPU faculty in planning vibrant, intellectually stimulating cultural events that feature nationally renowned academics, artists and performers. The grants support

programming in all academic disciplines and help introduce students to thoughtprovoking ideas in art, literature, science, philosophy and business. The theme for this year’s Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grants is Year of the Arts. We celebrate the arts at High Point University because they enrich our lives, embody the cultural values of societies, and awaken our imagination. Visual Art Sechrest Art Gallery: VISIONS 2014 Third Annual Invitational Exhibition: Invention as Art Monday - Thursday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Call 336-841-4685 or 336-803-1815 for more information) Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Sechrest Art Gallery August 18 – October 16 An invention is a unique novel device, method, composition or process. It may be an improvement to something existing, or a new process for creating an object or a result. For an invention to crossover and be designated a work of art it must adhere to certain aesthetic principles and standards. This exhibition explores the realm of constructed invention in 2D and 3D formats, showing artwork in the form of drawings and sculptural works, including kinetic sculpture that started out as invention.

Sechrest Art Gallery: High Point University Explores the Art of Seating Monday - Thursday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Call 336-841-4685 or 336-803-1815 for more information) Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Sechrest Art Gallery August 18 – December 4 Chair Dance Recital – Friday, November 14 at 5:00 pm The university’s School of Art & Design presents an exhibition of innovative student and faculty chair designs. Our exhibit is on display in conjunction with the Reynolda House Museum of American Art’s special exhibit, The Art of Seating: Two Hundred Years of American Design. More than 40 iconic chairs featured at the museum provide a point of reference for the chair prototypes and ideation designed by our own students and faculty. Design students learn to combine artistic forms with emerging technologies to bring an original idea to prototyping, manufacturing, and global marketing. Product designers consider limited resources, material life cycles, aesthetics and product placement to attract a targeted customer. On Friday, November 14 at 5:00 pm, a small troop of High Point University dance students will perform themed choreography relating to “The Chair,” which is an iconic utilitarian work of art.

Sechrest Art Gallery: Barbara Nessim: Mad Men Era Artist & Illustrator Monday - Thursday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Call 336-841-4685 or 336-803-1815 for more information) Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Sechrest Art Gallery October 27 – December 4 Barbara Nessim Lecture – Friday, November 7 at 7:00 pm Internationally-renowned artist, illustrator, and educator, Barbara Nessim has been a vital contributor and influential trendsetter in the art world over the past several decades. Women who built careers as illustrators in the “Mad Men” era in NY were few and far between. The work that she produced was a wonderful evocation of the New York art, fashion, and music scenes. The exhibit includes sketchbooks, prints, drawings, computer graphics, artist’s books and other publications, many featured in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and Esquire. Ms. Nessim was also one of the first illustrators to work with computers.


Lecture Series Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant: Phoenix Reading Series: Metta Sáma and Amy Catanzano Thursday, September 4 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Metta Sáma, Assistant Professor and Director of Creative Writing at Salem College, is the author of Nocturne Trio and South of Here. Her poems, fiction, creative non-fiction, and book reviews have been published or are forthcoming in Blackbird, Drunken Boat, Esque, The Owls, Pebble Lake Review, Reverie and Vinyl, among others. Sáma received her MFA and MA from Western Michigan and her PhD from SUNY-Binghamton. Amy Catanzano is an Assistant Professor of English and serves as Poet-in-Residence and Director of Creative Writing at Wake Forest University. Her most recent book is the fiction and poetry hybrid Starlight in Two Million: A Neo-Scientific Novella. Her second book, Multiversal, received the PEN USA Literary Award in Poetry. Catanzano has an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

The Heightened Importance of Leadership in all Endeavors for the Betterment of Mankind Tuesday, September 16 at 5:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium The following authors will discuss with each other and High Point University students how to breathe leadership into current circumstances and life events. The emphasis is about putting leadership into practice immediately as you prepare to transition to the work world. Phil Johnston is a specialist on leadership and managerial excellence, and is currently the Chief Legal Officer of ShareMail, Inc. Josiah Bunting is an American educator, and has served as a military officer, college president, author and speaker on education and Western culture. Dr. Lane Anderson was an educator for thirty-three years and an award-winning principal, and has served for four years on active duty in the United States Navy, as well as twenty one years in the naval reserve intelligence program, retiring with the rank of captain.

Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant: Phoenix Reading Series: Alan Michael Parker Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Alan Michael Parker is most recently the author of the novel, The Committee on Town Happiness, and the collection of poems, Long Division. He has also published seven previous collections of poems and two earlier novels. He has also served as the editor of The Imaginary Poets and co-editor of two other volumes of scholarship. His poetry and prose has appeared in numerous places, including The American Poetry Review, The Gettysburg Review, Kenyon Review, The Yale Review, The Believer, The New York Times Book Review, and The New Yorker. He is the Douglas C. Houchens Professor of English at Davidson College.

Dr. Alixandra Yanus Tuesday, September 30 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Gender plays a powerful role in determining citizens’ willingness to run for public office. This presentation will explore the source and scope of those barriers as well as begin to explore what can be done to narrow this gender gap for future generations.

Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant: Sebastian Guerrini Tuesday, October 7 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Sebastian Guerrini is a Designer in Visual Communication, Postgraduate in Communication Technologies and Doctor of Philosophy in Communication and Image Studies at the University of Kent. His area of specialty is the analysis and design of Institutional and Corporate Communication. He has carried out image and identity design in 26 nations. He has developed projects

for Amnesty International, Green Building Council, UNICEF, CLASCO and the United Nations. Author of the graphical version of the Argentina National Emblem, Sebastian also designed the brand of CONICET, the image of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Argentina and the visual identity of the nation’s Presidency, Ministries and Secretaries of State.

Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant: Todd Drake Friday, October 10 at 5:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Human rights photographer and installation artist, Todd Drake, creates art that addresses human rights issues among marginalized communities. Working collaboratively with community members, Drake creates images that are both specific and universal and reveals his concern for the most basic of human rights — to be considered fully human. Drake created the exhibition HELP: Hidden Work, Hidden Lives. He has worked collaboratively with communities including Muslim Americans, undocumented immigrants, and Palestinians.

CEO Q&A Moderated by Dr. Nido Qubein Wednesday, October 15 at 4:45 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre HPU continues its partnership with Business NC Magazine and UNCTV with an informative and thought provoking discussion with some of North Carolina’s top CEOs. The roundtable will be moderated by Dr. Nido Qubein and include David King with LabCorp, NC Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker and Dave Phillips with Phillips Industries. The program will be featured in Business NC and on a future broadcast of UNCTV. Lecture Series Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant: Beka Butts Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Beka Butts is an illustrator currently living in Greensboro, NC. She is a 2009 graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design and co-founder of the 512 Collective, an artist collective and gallery in High Point, NC that hopes to bring the growing art community in High Point together to create a culture of locally supported artists and makers. She has participated in several artistic festivals and showings including: The First Friday Indie Market, High Point Hop Fest, E.A.S.T. Austin Studio Tour, Big Bang Bizarre in Orlando, FL, and Bring it Down Town “mARTket” in El Paso, TX, among others.

WAGE Roundtable on North Carolina Women Leaders Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium The WAGE Leadership Project is an interdisciplinary initiative that fosters leadership and professional development skills in students across disciplines. This roundtable will include area leaders discussing their experiences, focusing on gender equity and its impact on leadership, civic engagement, and professional achievement.

Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant: Phoenix Reading Series: Etgar Keret Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 pm R. G. Wanek Center, Extraordinaire Cinema Etgar Keret is internationally acclaimed for his short stories. Suddenly a Knock on the Door and his three earlier collections are bestsellers in Israel and have been published in over thirty

languages. Keret has received the Book Publishers Association’s Platinum Prize several times, the Chevalier medallion of France’s Order of Arts and Letters, and has been awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize and the Ministry of Culture’s Cinema Prize. More than forty short movies have been based on his stories, one of which won the MTV Prize. Keret is also the writer of several feature screenplays. Jellyfish won the coveted Camera d’Or prize for best first feature at the Cannes Film Festival 2007. Wrist Cutters, featuring Tom Waits, was also released in 2007.

Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant: Barbara Nessim Friday, November 7 at 7:00 pm Sechrest Art Gallery, Hayworth Fine Arts Center Barbara Nessim is an American artist, illustrator, and educator. As a young professional, she broke gender boundaries as one of very few full-time professional female illustrators in the United States during the 1960s. She entered the highly competitive field of graphic design by illustrating record album covers, and magazine covers for Rolling Stone, Time, Ms, New York Magazine, and The Boston Globe. She was a pioneer in the practice of digital art and illustration and has since used the computer to provide new ways to create and exhibit her work. The significance of Nessim’s work is evidenced by the extensive retrospective exhibit sponsored by the Victoria & Albert Museum — Barbara Nessim, An Artful Life.

Jim Cathcart Wednesday, November 19 at 5:30 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Serial entrepreneur Jim Cathcart, CSP, CPAE will be sharing his personal success strategies plus the insights he has gained during this past year through over 100 interviews he conducted with self-made millionaires and highly successful entrepreneurs. He has found that the personal attributes you develop as an entrepreneur can have as much impact on your success as do the business ideas upon which your enterprise is built.

Phoenix Festival – Nathaniel Mackey Thursday, November 20 at 7:00 pm Greek Village Conference Center, Ballroom Nathaniel Mackey is an American poet, novelist, literary critic, editor and jazz aficionado. He is currently the Reynolds Price Professor of English at Duke. Mr. Mackey is a National Book Award winner for poetry, Chancellor of the Academy of American Poetry for six years, and a winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship, among other honors. As a tribute to High Point’s jazz heritage, members of the HPU Jazz Ensemble will also be playing at this year’s annual Phoenix Festival.

Thanksgiving Message: Bill Magee and Six Appeal Monday, November 24 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Dr. William P. Magee Jr., is a leading plastic and craniofacial surgeon who founded Operation Smile in 1982 with his wife, Kathleen S. Magee, and serves as the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Magee’s work on behalf of children around the world has led to numerous awards and honors. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report named Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee two of “America’s Best Leaders.” In 2007, USAID presented them with the President’s Call to Service Award from President George W. Bush. Dr. Magee received the first $1 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize in 1996, and the Servants of Peace Award from the UN representative to the Vatican in 1997. Six Appeal is a world class vocal ensemble infused with impeccable comedic timing and the energy and vitality of a rock band. Swearing off instruments, the award-winning vocal band Six Appeal takes you on a journey that spans decades of music, performing classic oldies, current chart toppers, and catchy original tunes — all sung a cappella. Music Voice Division Recital Sunday, September 14 at 2:00 pm

Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre This voice recital is a celebration of women. The texts and music reveal a candid look at different aspects of being female; their lives, loves, losses, humor and even their weaknesses. Mezzo-soprano, Dr. Candice Burrows will be accompanied by Japanese collaborative pianist, Hisako Hiratsuka, of Tufts University. Special guest Dr. Laura Stevens will also be playing flute.

Marvin Blickenstaff Piano Recital and Workshops Performance on Friday, October 3 at 7:30 pm Workshops on Saturday, October 4 at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm

Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Marvin Blickenstaff teaches privately in the Philadelphia area and also at The New School for Music Study in Princeton, NJ. He is former President of the Board of the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy, and serves on the executive planning committee for the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. In 2009 he received MTNA’s highest honor, The Achievement Award. The recital will feature some of the world’s favorite piano classics, from Chopin, Schubert, Beethoven, Debussy, and Liszt. The first workshop will be based on Honeymoon or Havoc: The First Week of Practice on New Repertoire, and the second workshop is titled, Doing What Comes Naturally: Nature’s Clues to Effective Interpretation.

HPU Jazz Ensemble Concert High Point Community Concert: WindSync Thursday, October 2 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Professional Dress Required Hailed by the Houston Chronicle as “revolutionary chamber musicians,” WindSync has distinguished itself among classical music ensembles as North America’s foremost emerging wind quintet. The ensemble is recognized internationally for dramatic and adventurous programing in venues ranging from concert halls to museums, universities and schools. The young, energetic group plays exclusively from memory, including elements of staging and choreography, and focuses on building connections with audiences through dynamic concert programming and charismatic stage presence. Percussion Ensemble Concert Saturday, November 1 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Join the HPU Percussion Ensemble for an evening of exciting music, directed by world-renowned marimbist and composer, Dr. Nathan Daughtrey.


Music Greensboro Symphony: Eroica Friday, November 7 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Professional Dress Required The Greensboro Symphony explores the fine line between Heroes and Villains this November 7th performance at High Point University. Initially written in celebration of Napoleon’s revolutionary regime, Beethoven’s Symphony #3 swiftly changed course when Bonaparte revealed his true intentions and proclaimed himself Emperor of the French in 1804. Disgusted by Napoleon’s thirst for power, Beethoven dramatically ripped up the title page, renamed it “Sinfonia eroica” and established it as one of the most legendary works of the 19th century. Russian pianist Igor Kamenz will begin the concert, treating us to Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Piano Concerto #1. Fall Band Concert Sunday, November 30 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Comprised of students from across campus, the HPU Wind Ensemble performs a wide variety of music at multiple concerts throughout the year. This year’s Fall Concert will feature the full ensemble, smaller chamber groups, traditional compositions and new, modern works. Please join us for an entertaining night of music.

Opera Scenes Concert: Mostly Mozart Tuesday, December 2 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Chapel, Sanctuary Students from the Opera Scenes class will present a semi-staged program of excerpts by Mozart and other well-known composers, under the direction of Dr. Scott MacLeod, Assistant Professor of Voice.

Holiday Choral Concert Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6 at 7:30 pm

Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Our annual Holiday Choral Concert has become a popular event for the High Point community and this year will be the most exciting to date! The concert will be a festive evening of beloved holiday music. A full orchestra made up of students, faculty, and guests will accompany the chorus. North Carolina Symphony: Holiday Pops Concert Tuesday, December 9 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Professional Dress Required Each year at the holidays, the North Carolina Symphony performs Holiday Pops, a festive tradition that is a favorite with audiences around the state! Founded by Lamar Stringfield in 1932, the North Carolina Symphony is a full-time, professional orchestra with 66 musicians under the artistic leadership of Music Director Grant Llewellyn. Theatre HPU Theatre Presents: On the Verge Thursday, October 9 – Saturday, October 11; Monday, October 13 – Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30 pm Black Box Theatre Written by Eric Overmyer On the Verge makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955. Three intrepid Victorian women explorers embark on an adventure to Lands Unknown in 1888 — only to discover they are adrift in time, eventually arriving at a 1955 Las Vegas casino! HPU Theatre Presents: The Drowsy Chaperone

Worship Services Wednesday evenings at 5:30 pm

Hayworth Chapel, Sanctuary Join us in fellowship at the weekly worship services held at High Point University on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. in the Hayworth Chapel. Each worship service strives to provide an inspired time, space and message that aids all who attend in the ongoing work of self and social transformation. Reverend Davis preaches at each service, unless otherwise stated, and the Board of Stewards, composed entirely of students, oversees the services’ liturgies. Lessons and Carols Wednesday, December 10 at 5:30 pm Hayworth Chapel, Sanctuary This special candlelight service will feature members of the university community, the Chapel Choir and the Flute Ensemble. The Board of Stewards, Alpha Delta Theta sorority and Alpha Phi Omega fraternity will serve as ushers and greeters. The service is based on the traditional Festival of Lessons and Carols at King’s College in Cambridge, England.

Thursday, November 20 – Saturday, November 22 at 7:30 pm Sunday, November 23 at 2:00 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Written by Bob Martin Music and Lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison The musical The Drowsy Chaperone is a parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s. The story concerns a middleaged, asocial musical theatre fan as he plays the record of his favorite musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. The show comes to life onstage as he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors. Tickets are available for HPU students, faculty, staff, and the general public by contacting the HPU Box Office at Hayworth Fine Arts Center at 336-841-4673. Community Christmas Celebration Thursday, December 18 and Friday, December 19 at 5:30 pm Kester International Promenade You are invited to bring the family and take a stroll down the festive Jane and Gene Kester International Promenade, and enjoy Christmas music, beautiful decorations, hot chocolate, and more. Children may have a complimentary photo taken with Santa, and he’s bringing gifts too!
