Sky Above Earth Below: Tradition and Transformation in Landscape Tuesday, August 25 – Saturday, October 10 Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Sechrest Art Gallery An exhibition on the genre of landscape featuring its foundation in the Picturesque and Romantic movements and subsequent redefinitions in the Modern and Post-Modern periods. Among nineteenth-century paintings selected from the High Point University Permanent Collection on view are those by Gottlieb Daniel Paul Weber, George W. Johnstone, and Edward Charles Williams. The Weatherspoon Art Museum of the University of North Carolina Greensboro is lending works by artists Ben Norris, Gertraud Brausewetter, Francis Speight, and Jim Dine. Private collectors and artists are also lending works. An extensive range of creative involvement with landscape is well represented though a wide range of media, movements, and artistic expressions. Richard Gantt is the guest curator for this exhibition.

Lecture Series Laura El-Tantawy: Images, Identity and Community Wednesday, September 9 at 5:30 pm The David L. Francis Lecture Hall at Earl N. Phillips School of Business Join us as Laura El-Tantawy will be speaking as part of HPU’s Common Experience theme of “Just Communities.” In addition to sharing her experiences as a female photographer, El-Tantawy will address the role of photographic images as a tool to explore identity and community, with an emphasis on Indian farmers and the Arab Spring. El-Tantawy’s work is well regarded in the international community and will offer students a glimpse into a global world to which many of them have not yet been exposed. Her lecture will address timely and important topics that relate to diverse courses offered at HPU.

Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant • Phoenix Reading Series: Jacob Paul and Matthew Fiander Thursday, September 10 at 7:00 pm The David L. Francis Lecture Hall at Earl N. Phillips School of Business Jacob Paul and Matthew Fiander are both faculty in the English Department. Paul’s first novel, Sarah/Sara, was named one of 2010’s five best first fictions by Poets & Writers. The Public called his most recent novel, A Song of Ilan, “a remarkable exploration of issues and experiences that are often discounted or outright ignored in American writing today.”

Wes graduated Phi Theta Kappa from Valley Forge Military College in 1998 and Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University in 2001. He completed an MLitt in International Relations from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in 2004. Upon graduation, Wes served as a paratrooper and Captain in the United States Army, participating in a combat tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Publisher’s Weekly has called Patricia Park’s first novel, Re Jane: “a cheeky, clever homage to Jane Eyre, interwoven with touching meditations on Korean-American identity.” Park will talk about her book and her craft and answer questions.

Wes has been featured by USA Today, People Magazine, “Meet the Press,” The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, “The View,” MSNBC, and NPR, among many others. He is also the host of “Beyond Belief” on the Oprah Winfrey Network and Executive Producer and host of “Coming Back with Wes Moore” on PBS.

Phillips School of Business Randall Horton is the author of the memoirs, Roxbury, and Hook: A Memoir, and the poetry collections, The Definition of Place, The Lingua Franca of Ninth Street, and his most recent, Pitch Dark Anarchy. He is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of New Haven, Connecticut and is a Cave Canem fellow. Please join us as Horton reads from his work and answers questions.


Lecture Series Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant • Richard Krawiec: Poetry in Communities Thursday, October 1 at 7:00 pm Ballroom at Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce Richard Krawic’s expansive body of work moves between plays, stories, novels, and poems. Since 1983, he has offered training workshops on how to teach writing to children and adults at writer’s conferences, literacy centers, Departments of Education, various universities and colleges, and in public schools. He teaches writing in community sites such as shelters, housing projects, women’s centers, and prisons, including Death Row, as well as in traditional educational institutions.

Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant • Phoenix Reading Series: Joseph Bathanti: Communities of Mercy Thursday, October 29 at 7:00 pm Ballroom at Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce Joseph Bathanti, North Carolina’s Poet from 2012–2014, will be speaking about “Communities of Mercy.” His lecture draws from his own experiences as a teacher and writer in nontraditional writing contexts, such as prisons, and consider the role of poetry in and for the community. His poetry, fiction, and nonfiction have earned him several distinctions, including the Spoken Prize, the Linda Flowers Literary Award, and Sherwood Anderson Award.

Dr. Ashley Carse: The Big Ditch: The Panama Canal and the Infrastructure of a Global Community Friday, October 30 at 4:00 pm The David L. Francis Lecture Hall at Earl N. Phillips School of Business It is widely acknowledged that, during the course of the twentieth century, the transoceanic Panama Canal—or the “Big Ditch,” as it is called—was an instrumental part of the infrastructure

that gave rise to a global community by the end of the millennium. In this talk, anthropologist Ashley Carse shifts the framework and discuss the implications of that project for indigenous and Afro-Panamanian communities, who once laid claim to the land that the canal currently occupies and who have benefited significantly less from its construction.

High Point University Presents a Discussion with Marc Randolph, Co-founder of Netflix, and President Dr. Nido Qubein Monday, November 2 at 7:00 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Marc Randolph is a veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneur, advisor and investor. Marc was co-founder of the online movie and television streaming service Netflix, serving as their founding CEO, as the executive producer of their web site, and as a member of their board of directors until his retirement in 2004. Although best known for starting Netflix, Randolph’s career as an entrepreneur spans more than four decades. He’s founded more than half a dozen other successful start-ups, served as a mentor to hundreds of earlystage entrepreneurs, and invested in numerous tech ventures. Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant • Phoenix Festival: Douglas Glover Thursday, November 19 at 7:00 pm Extraordinaire Cinema at R.G. Wanek Center Douglas Glover’s latest book is a short story collection, Savage Love. He has written five other books of short stories, four novels, two books of essays

and The Enamoured Knight, a book about Cervantes and novel form. His novel Elle won the 2003 Governor-General’s Award for Fiction and was a finalist for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. In 2007 he received the Writers’ Trust Timothy Findley Award. From 1996 to 2006 he was the editor of the annual collection Best Canadian Stories. In 2010 he founded the online magazine Numéro Cinq.

Thanksgiving Message: Jim Stovall and String Angels Monday, November 23 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Jim Stovall is an American writer best known for his bestselling novel The Ultimate Gift. He is a graduate of Oral Roberts University. On May 3, 2008, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Law from ORU for his work with the disabled. Stovall is blind and is an advocate on behalf of people with blindness. He worked to make television and movies accessible to the blind as President of the Narrative Television Network, an organization that has received various award recognitions including an Emmy award, a Media Access Award and an International Film and Video Award. The String Angels are the world’s leading Electric String Trio bringing the classics into the twenty-first century. Trained by the creators of world-renowned live act The Three Waiters, this trio will amaze you with their fully choreographed, interactive electric violin show. Dr. Debora Miranda: Bad Indians Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 pm The David L. Francis Lecture Hall at Earl N. Phillips School of Business Poet Deborah Miranda will read from her mixed-genre collection, Bad Indians: A Tribal Memoir (2013), winner of a Gold Medal from the Independent Publishers Association and shortlisted for the William Saroyan Award. She is an enrolled member of the Ohlone-Costanoan Esselin Nation of California and is the John Lucien Smith Term Professor of English at Washington and Lee University.


Music High Point University Chamber Music Series Concert

North Carolina Youth Brass Band Concert Sunday, November 1 at 3:00 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre

The North Carolina Youth Brass Band is an all-star ensemble composed of many of the finest high school brass players and percussionists in this region of North Carolina. Conducted by Dr. Brian Meixner, the NCYBB is a new ensemble, founded in 2015, and celebrates its debut performance.

The High Point University Chamber Music Series will present a program of flute, piano, and organ music honoring César Franck (1822–1890) and will include performances by Associate Professor of Piano, Dr. Robert Hallquist; Instructor of Flute, Dr. Laura Stevens; and Instructor of Organ, Mrs. Susan Bates.

Musical for Theatre Department: Nunsense Thursday, October 8 – Saturday, October 10, and Monday, October 12 – Wednesday, October 14 at 7:30 pm Black Box Theatre Nunsense is a musical comedy with book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin. It is a winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Off Broadway Musical in its original New York production. The show is about a fundraiser put on by the Little Sisters of Hoboken to raise money for their fellow sisters who are accidentally poisoned by the convent cook, Sister Julia Child of God. HPU Percussion and Jazz Ensemble Concert Friday, October 9 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Join the HPU Percussion Ensemble for an evening of exciting music, directed by world-renowned percussionist and composer Dr. Nathan Daughtrey alongside the HPU Jazz Ensemble as they present a concert of classic jazz standards and new works, spanning all of the major style periods of jazz from the 1930s to the present. The music of Ellington, Basie, Miles and Coltrane are presented alongside favorites from the great American songbook.

Opera Scenes Concert: Ominous Opera Friday, November 13 at 8:00 pm Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel Join the students of the Opera Scenes class for an exploration of the unluckiest characters in opera! Sinister plots and deceptive characters will highlight the semi-staged showcase.

Lorena Guillen Tango Ensemble: The Other Side of My Heart: Tango, Women and Immigration Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 pm Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel “The Other Side of My Heart” is a Tango concert. The first half is based on the real stories of a group of Latino women that immigrated to North Carolina. In this musical piece their stories become a cycle of five songs interlaced by these Latino women’s stories in which they reflect about their trajectory from their home countries to their new place in United States. The second part of the concert consists of a selection of Argentine tango-songs that revels this genre as the product of diverse migratory waves and the role of women composers, lyricists and performers in its solidification as the fore-most idiosyncratic popular urban Argentine song.

Holiday Choral Concert Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Our Holiday Choral Concert this year will feature members from University Singers, Chapel Choir, Women’s Chorus, and Chamber Singers as they present an evening of delightful holiday choral selections. Songs will range from popular holiday standards such as “Jingle Bells,” “White Christmas,” and “Baby It’s Cold Outside” to more traditional arrangements of songs like “Silent Night,” “Patapan,” and “Carol of the Bells.” The evening will be an exciting presentation, sure to get you in the holiday spirit! North Carolina Symphony: Holiday Pops Concert Tuesday, December 8 at 7:30 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre • Professional Dress Required Holiday Pops is a North Carolina Symphony tradition that is a favorite with audiences around the state each year. The festive concert showcases seasonal favorites, and includes the always popular sing-a-longs. Founded by Lamar Stringfield in 1932, the North Carolina Symphony is a full-time, professional orchestra with 66 musicians under the artistic leadership of Music Director Grant Llewellyn. Noises Off by Michael Frayn is the classic farce that is not one play but two: simultaneously a traditional sex farce, Nothing On and the backstage “drama” that develops during Nothing On’s final rehearsal prior to opening night. The two begin to interlock as the characters make their exits from Nothing On only to find themselves making entrances into the even worse nightmare that’s happening backstage! It’s a time to move from the chaos of life to the most important things in life: community, care of self, and creativity of God’s spirit that transforms the world. Lessons and Carols Wednesday, December 9 at 5:30 pm Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel This special candlelight service is the final Chapel service of the fall semester, bringing the community together to remember and retell the Christmas story. The service will feature members of the university community reading scripture and music led by the Chapel Choir. The service is based on the traditional Festival of Lessons and Carols from King’s College, Cambridge, England.

Join us for the Second Annual Fall Art and Design Fest as we celebrate the “art of making” with more than 24 artists, designers and craftsperson’s from across the region. There will be music and food trucks!

Dr. Johnny M. Hunt became pastor of First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Georgia, in December of 1986. First Baptist Woodstock is one of the largest churches in the United States. Under his ministry the church has grown from 1,000 members to more than 19,000. In 1996, Dr. Hunt served as President of the Pastors’ Conference of the Southern Baptist Convention and served two terms as the President of the Southern Baptist Convention. A native of North Carolina, Hunt was born in Lumberton and is a member of the Lumbee Native American Indian tribe.
