It extends into HPU’s campus culture where students benefit from personal Success Coaches, a nationally recognized Office of Career and Professional Development, facilities that mimic Fortune 500 companies, fine-dining learning labs, career expos that bring esteemed employers to campus and more.

HPU’s culture of transformation manifests itself on campus in the form of new facilities, too. In just the past year, HPU has opened doors to the new Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena, Conference Center and Hotel, established the Workman School of Dental Medicine and launched a $400 million expansion in academic schools and campus facilities. This includes four new academic schools and innovative housing options for more than 500 students.

Even during the worst economic recession (2008) and global pandemic (2020) of our time, HPU was able to completely transform.

How?

“We ‘Choose to Be extraordinary,’” says Qubein. “The entire HPU family embodies this call to action. We are uniquely focused on showing students how to pursue life with faithful courage and never be intimidated by life’s obstacles.”

Choose to Be Extraordinary

CCHOOSE TO BE EXTRAORDINARY!

This is High Point University’s call to action. You’ll find these words on HPU’s nationally recognized campus, and you’ll feel the powerful sense of purpose and energetic momentum they create in students, faculty and staff.

HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein extended this inspiring challenge to HPU when he became president. Since that time, HPU has undergone a total transformation. Enrollment has more than tripled to 6,000 students, academic schools have increased from three to 11, and the campus has grown from 90 to 520 acres. Students from every state and more than 50 countries are flocking to campus.

The university’s call to action mirrors his life in many ways. Qubein immigrated to America as a teenager with little money and little knowledge of English. He went on to graduate from college, build businesses, become a consultant to global corporations and serve on multiple national boards.

At HPU, he partnered with faculty and staff to create a university that doesn’t merely focus on the “product”— the diploma. Rather, HPU focuses on the product of the

product—preparing students for the world as it will be.

Today, HPU is distinctively known as The Premier Life Skills University. The entire campus is committed to instilling students with life skills that outlast and transcend beyond inevitable technological changes.

Yes, HPU’s campus is filled with the latest technology and has been ranked for seven consecutive years as #1 Most Innovative by U.S. News & World Report. But HPU prepares students to render value in an ever-changing marketplace by building relationships, communicating well with others, navigating complex situations and adapting amidst rapid change.

It starts with the President’s First-Year Seminar on Life Skills for all freshmen, taught by Qubein himself, an entrepreneur and consultant to CEOs and global leaders who are his friends. These include co-founders and CEOs from organizations like Apple, Netflix, Domino’s, the Dallas Mavericks, MyEyeDr. and more. The weekly seminar focuses on fiscal literacy, time management, effective communication, leadership and how to embrace change. Qubein also discusses his “rule of thirds”: investing one-third of life in earning, one-third in learning and one-third in serving.

The Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center is home to HPU’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams and serves as a venue for major events, speakers, concerts, academic symposia and recreational activities. It seats 5,000 people and includes state-of-the-art production equipment, which provides HPU students with incredible learning opportunities.

magine having the opportunity to ask the co-founder of Apple Computer for insight on technology, game design or artificial intelligence. Imagine pitching your startup idea to the co-founder of Netflix, who is also an angel investor. Consider what it is like for a business student to talk to the CEO of Domino’s about the qualities he needs in future employees. Or for an Emmy Awardwinning journalist to teach you the art of storytelling.

Companies invest millions of dollars each year to provide opportunities for employees to attend conferences to hear from world-renowned leadership experts and engage in

professional development. But HPU has built this into the four-year academic journey through the Access to Innovators Program—compressing time for graduates and helping them stand out from the competition in job and graduate school interviews.

Jenna Tarantino, a Class of 2018 business administration major, is just one example. She first connected with HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence Marc Randolph during HPU’s Annual Business Plan Competition, where she pitched her invention and business outline to the Netflix co-founder.

After receiving live feedback from Randolph on her invention and business plan, Tarantino continued to exchange emails and update him on her progress. When Randolph would return to campus, they’d catch up one-on-one.

Randolph saw an entrepreneurial spirit and determination in Tarantino that he wanted as part of his team.

After graduating from HPU, Randolph asked Tarantino to come work for him as the start-up founder and community manager for his podcast, “That Will Never Work.” Today, she balances working for Randolph, running her own company and returning to HPU to work with current students on their pitches ahead of meeting with Randolph.

Tarantino is just one of many students whose lives have been positively impacted by guidance and mentorship from a global leader on HPU’s campus. The true impact is students learn what President Qubein calls “the art of the possible.” They learn that they, too, can achieve extraordinary things.

Spend no more than 15 minutes on campus, and it’s clear that HPU is committed to preparing students for a lifetime of success. You’ll find that HPU’s investment in each student’s success runs much deeper than their academic discipline. Because the core of a college education shouldn’t focus only on the attainment of a diploma, an extraordinary, holistic education is about personal transformation and professional development, too.

The campus is filled with state-of-the-art technology, labs and learning spaces that introduce students to undergraduate research opportunities starting their freshman year. Consider the professional-grade TV studio;

Outcomes with Impact

HPU is committed to equipping students with a holistic education and the global context needed to live a life of influence and impact. When they graduate, they land impressive internships, are sought after by Fortune 500 companies and enroll in stellar graduate programs around the world. Here are just a few examples.

“I put the life skills I gained at HPU into practice daily. And while I appreciated my education and my campus as a student, I understand the context of the HPU experience in the real world now that I’ve worked for companies like Google and Duolingo.”

—Tyler Yusko, ’13, ’14, Director of Technical Recruiting at Duolingo

“When I interned with organizations like USA Track and Field, Under Armour and IMG College, what set me apart was the real-world experience I received at HPU and the attitude they instilled within me to never be afraid of a challenge.”

—Mikaela Campbell, ‘18 Associate Manager, Global Partnerships & Media, NBA

“HPU has most importantly taught me that perseverance and hard work are essential for success even when obstacles come your way.”

the three-story Culp Planetarium; the 15,000-square-foot Caine Conservatory; the trading room with a real-time stock ticker; and 1924 PRIME and Alo—both fine-dining spaces where students practice job interviews over a meal. These, along with many others, serve as real-world learning labs where students have endless opportunities to grow, create, research, and collaborate with expert faculty and industry leaders.

Modern science, technology, engineering, math and health care facilities are housed on HPU’s $500 million Innovation Corridor, while communication, business, art, education and other academic facilities are located along the Kester International Promenade. These facilities often have grand lobbies that mimic Fortune 500 companies or glass walls like Silicon Valley headquarters.

Because HPU knows technology always changes, these facilities are steeped in life skills lessons, too.

HPU is committed to equipping students with the life skills and experience it takes to sustain success in their careers and daily life. That includes the abilities to build relationships, communicate well with others, develop a growth mindset, adapt to rapid change and thrive in competitive fields.

Plus, when students land interviews at major corporations, they’re already comfortable in professional environments and prepared to render value in the global marketplace.

A VALUES-BASED APPROACH

YYes, HPU has radically transformed its campus and culture. And that transformation is continually embraced at HPU. But as Qubein tells parents and students on their earliest visits to campus, HPU is first and foremost grounded in the values of hard work, personal initiative, generosity, gratitude, faith, patriotism and more.

HPU's Extraordinary Leader:

Meet one of the most distinctive college presidents in the nation

The leader behind High Point University’s innovative outlook on education and campus expansion is HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein.

When he became president of High Point University in 2005, higher education was at a turning point. Institutions nationally struggled to define what made them distinctive, including HPU.

“It was time to move High Point University from an ocean of sameness to a pool of distinction,” says Qubein.

Since he took office, HPU has undergone total transformation—from academic programs and campus facilities to the culture of the institution.

Qubein has led HPU’s total enrollment this year to a record-breaking 6,000 students, while nationally colleges experienced declines. HPU has also launched numerous graduate programs and reached 1,000 graduate students—another historical milestone.

He’s delivered more than 7,500 presentations globally to business leaders and is recognized as a life skills leader. He is inducted into the Horatio Alger Association for Distinguished Americans, along with Oprah Winfrey and Colin Powell. He is also the recipient of the DAR Americanism Award and, along with four U.S. presidents, the recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Qubein has also been recognized as both the Citizen of the Year and Philanthropist of the Year in his home city of High Point. Most recently, he was named the Honorary Chairman for the internationally recognized PGA Wyndham Championship.

HPU President Nido Qubein’s Take On:

VALUES

“Values are everything, especially in a world where technology is advancing the speed and way in which decisions must be made. But values cannot be taught; they must be modeled. I remind our faculty and staff that we live, students watch and students learn.”

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

“Having an entrepreneurial mindset is not about building a widget and selling it. It’s about building value and rendering value for your client, customer, congregation and student—you get the idea. At HPU, we attract entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial leaders to coach and inspire our students.”

LIFE SKILLS

“Being coachable was something I learned from High Point University. On HPU’s campus, there is a culture of finding ways to improve and putting your best foot forward.”

—Dr. John C. Maxwell, Bestselling Author and Internationally Renowned Leadership Expert, HPU’s Executive Coach in Residence, Pictured Right as a Guest on Side by Side with Nido Qubein

“Employers seek new hires with more than technical competence because technology changes daily. The skills that outlast technological advances are what we call life skills. The leaders of tomorrow, who are the college students of today, must learn the skills to quickly amass information, manage risks (not merely avoid them), make decisions and take positive action. At HPU, our curriculum is grounded in these skills. It starts with my First-Year Seminar on Life Skills, where I share my experience in building a life of success and significance.”

“Who we are is who we attract. High Point University attracts high caliber students because this is an environment that’s very conducive for growth, for learning, for success—for literally being extraordinary.”

Why Parents Love HPU

As part of that, HPU is dedicated to values-based and service-learning opportunities both on and off campus.

Students, faculty and staff volunteer 500,000 hours each year. One such event, HPU’s Annual Veterans Day Celebration, brings over 1,200 veterans and their families to campus to honor those who have served our nation.

Qubein also proudly proclaims that HPU is a God, family and country institution. Students are surrounded with reminders that while no nation is perfect, the United States is full of opportunities for anyone willing to work hard, help others and commit to purposeful living. It’s why American flags and patriotic imagery are featured throughout campus.

Five-Star Reviews from Global Leaders

Remove Stress and Uncertainty from the College Search Process

“The campus is super impressive, but the culture is above and beyond. I guarantee you that there are plenty of universities that have beautiful buildings, but it’s HPU’s culture that makes it distinct.”

Classical music continuously plays along the Kester International Promenade—lined with flags representing the 50+ countries HPU students come from, over 40 sculptures of history’s greatest leaders, such as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Benjamin Franklin and Rosa Parks, and inspirational quotes that are inscribed along the sidewalks.

You’ll find this quote from Roy E. Disney, the nephew of Walt Disney, there: “When your values are clear, making decisions becomes easier.” These words summarize HPU’s approach to values-based living and learning.

“Parents spend their lives modeling values for their children,” says Qubein. “When they send their student to a university, they want it to uphold and further those values. And when students choose a university, they want an institution that will serve as an extension of their home.”

HPU is that institution for thousands of families across the country, including many of whom have more than one student enrolled at The Premier Life Skills University.

“I love coming to High Point University. For me, it’s like going to church because it lifts my spirits. The students and the faculty are good, intentional people, which is part of the culture. I get far more out of coming to HPU than I give.”

Consistently Recognized for Excellence
