Career and Professional Development

The path toward career success isn’t a straight line from point A to point B. It’s a winding journey with twists and turns on an ever-changing road. The champions of today’s economy embrace the ability to adapt and change with it.

For the Office of Career and Professional Development, this means focusing their efforts on the personal transformation, not a single destination, of each student at HPU beginning the day that they arrive on campus. Their approach includes many resources, all anchored by the Four-Year Career Plan. This plan lays out a roadmap of steps students can take in their career pursuits from freshman year through graduation.

Throughout their journey, students are engaged with hundreds of opportunities,

INTERNSHIP GUARANTEE

HPU guarantees an internship for every student who completes a five-phase professional development program.

AT A GLANCE

The journey from classroom to career begins when you arrive.

Every freshman at High Point University is connected with Student Success Coaches who assist them during the first year of college. HPU Student Success Coaches are professionals solely devoted to providing transitional support to first-year students in all areas applicable to their development, including academic, social and professional. They are there to assist in the transition to college life. Student Success Coaches serve as academic advisors for the first year and are assigned based on academic majors.

The Four-Year Career Plan leads students to take action in a variety of developmental steps, including:

FRESHMAN YEAR

• Explore academic majors/minors

• Log on to HPU’s Handshake and set up your profile

• Discuss with your career advisor taking career selfassessments (PathwayU) to clarify your areas of interest

• Participate in campus and community activities to enhance your leadership skills and further define your interests

• Focus on academics and building a strong GPA

• Create a resume using our online Resume Guide

• Pay close attention to what you post on social media sites and realize that what you post NOW can cause you problems LATER

SOPHOMORE YEAR

• Learn about YOU through informational interviewing/job shadowing – contact people you know who work in fields you are considering

• Join campus clubs/organizations and professional associations that will connect you with students who have similar interests

• Strengthen/update your resume and have it reviewed by your career advisor

• Research possible internship opportunities through the Handshake network

• Plan early for your summer – seek out an internship, volunteer experience, or paid job that will help you continue to explore areas of career interest

• Research and plan ahead for a junior year fall or spring internship

JUNIOR YEAR

• Establish a LinkedIn profile and start to selectively add connections; clean up social media sites from your earlier college days if you have not yet done so

• Research internship opportunities and determine if a for-credit internship fits into your course schedule; remember that internships do not necessarily have to be done for academic credit

• Continue to conduct informational interviews

• Update your profile and search for internships using Handshake

• Meet with your career advisor to update your resume, create an effective cover letter, and practice for interviews

• Attend career fairs and related events to see what organizations are growing and actively recruiting college graduates

• Research graduate and professional schools early if you are considering pursuing an advanced degree after graduation; become familiar with application timelines and admissions tests

• Finalize plans for a summer internship; complete paperwork if you are completing for academic credit

SENIOR YEAR

• Schedule an appointment early in the year with your career advisor to develop a job-search action plan and timetable

• Google yourself to find out what potential employers can see online

• Polish your resume and create targeted cover letters; be aware that you will need to tweak both documents for each opportunity

• Strengthen your presence on LinkedIn!

• Join the LinkedIn High Point University Alumni group (seniors only)

• Attend a LinkedIn workshop or make an appointment to learn how to improve your profile

• Continue to pursue all possible networking opportunities

• Request a mock interview appointment with your career advisor to practice answering challenging interview questions

• Search for opportunities through Handshake and other online resources

• Apply to graduate school if that is your path; pay close attention to all deadlines

THE ROLE OF OUR SUCCESS COACHES

A Student Success Coach is your guide through your transitional journey into college life. Here’s a glimpse at the important roles a Success Coach will play throughout your freshman year at HPU.

LIFE COACH: When incoming freshmen arrive on campus, they experience a variety of emotions. Because it’s often their first time living away from home, students feel the need to quickly find their place at HPU. Success Coaches answer that call. Your Success Coach will encourage you to find your own niche on campus, as well as ways that you can apply and pursue your passions.

UNIVERSITY LIAISON: A Success Coach will help you make connections with faculty and staff on campus. They can refer you to Career Services, Student Life, Counseling Services, Financial Aid and other offices on campus to ensure that you receive the support and encouragement you need.

ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR: A Success Coach will assist in the implementation of programs and services designed to promote academic, personal and social/emotional success. They will encourage you to get involved in clubs, intramural sports or other campus activities as a means of staying engaged beginning your first year.

ACADEMIC ADVISOR: Success Coaches meet with each freshman at Orientation to review their fall course schedule. Success Coaches also guide students in choosing classes for the spring semester and fall of sophomore year. 4 3 2 1

After graduating from HPU, Coombs was also accepted into MIT, Duke, UC Berkeley and UNC Chapel Hill.

“The importance of HPU’s strong mentors can’t be overstated,” said Coombs, who is originally from Baltimore, Maryland. “That is the biggest theme that characterized my time at HPU and informed my decision to go to Yale and further work with excellent mentors. There was a palpable dedication to pedagogy from the professors at HPU.”

The NSF-GRFP award includes three years of significant financial support, including tuition assistance and a personal stipend meant to help the recipient focus on conducting intensive research. The NSF-GRFP received over 12,000 applications in 2018. Ulrich, from Troutman, North Carolina, was one of 2,000 awarded.

In addition to this award, Ulrich was one of 12 students offered an NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholarship and was previously recognized with a Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention. Ulrich is now attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and pursuing her doctorate in organic chemistry. Her research focus is on drug development for diseases, such as tuberculosis.

Olivia Gardner, ’24

Olivia Gardner, who majored in both journalism and spanish, earned the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program Award. Gardner is now serving as a Fulbright English teaching assistant in Ecuador.

As a Fulbright participant, Gardner teaches English to local Ecuadorian university students in the capital city of Quito. After finishing up her program, she plans to attend law school in pursuit of a career in immigration law.

“My junior year, I fell in love with the Spanish language and culture in a way that I had never felt about something academic before. I studied abroad in Spain for a Maymester, and I wanted to do anything I could after that trip to go back or simply live abroad. I applied to the Fulbright in Ecuador because the program logistics fit my preference best and because of friends I had met in the last year from the country that had changed my life.”

Billy Mathias, ’22

Billy Mathias earned his degree in neuroscience from HPU and is now pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Kristin Ackerman, an assistant professor of Medical Sciences in the Congdon School of Health Sciences, was one of several caring professors at HPU who helped prepare him for success in medical school.

“The Natural Sciences Fellows Program emphasized learning through lab work and research, allowing me to apply the lessons I learned in the classroom,“ said Mathias, who is originally from York, Pennsylvania.

“My advisors and professors pushed me and encouraged my curiosity — they believed I could accomplish my goals.”

Daniel Bartlett, ’19

Daniel Bartlett came from Great Falls, Virginia, to pursue his pre-law education at High Point University.

Bartlett found a variety of opportunities to grow on HPU’s campus. He majored in business administration, minored in philosophy, served as a Student Justice and played on HPU’s club basketball team. He also worked closely with the Office of Career and Professional Development to plan for his future.

Bartlett pursued his Juris Doctorate at the American University College of Law in Washington, D.C. Today, he serves as a law clerk for Gerben Perrott PLLC.

“HPU provided an environment that taught me how to fully apply myself in not only my academics but every aspect of my life,” said Bartlett. “I became a much more efficient person in terms of my studies, my work and my involvement in activities.”

previous experience:

Carly Garr, ’19

Carly Garr came to HPU from Kintnersville, Pennsylvania, majored in international business and minored in marketing. Following graduation, Garr joined NBCUniversal’s GolfNow, a division of the Golf Channel, as a business services specialist. Today, she’s a Global User Experience/User Interface Designer at Universal Destinations and Experiences.

Garr gained experience in her undergraduate years through multiple internships. She worked with the Office of Career and Professional Development starting her freshman year.

“HPU taught me to make myself stand out,” said Garr. “I had multiple internships in the U.S. and abroad. It was an excellent talking point when interviewing, and HPU pushed me to find those internships, positions and, most importantly, to make connections with people who wanted to help me succeed. I knew I wanted to set myself apart, and having the Office of Career and Professional Development assist during my freshman year was a reason I was able to accomplish what I did.”

Hanna Zelis, ’24

Hanna Zelis, class of 2024, received dual degrees in computer science and exercise science. She had graduate school offers from institutions like Duke University, Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon, and she ultimately chose Northwestern University for a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence. During her time at HPU, Zelis ascended to the presidency of HPU Minds, a student-led project in collaboration with Steve Wozniak—Apple Cofounder and HPU’s Innovator in Residence. She took full advantage of all the resources and opportunities that HPU provided.

“I chose HPU because of its strong emphasis on its STEM programs and the access it provides to new technologies. At larger universities, I may have had to compete for the opportunity to use these technologies. HPU’s smaller school size ensured me the access to these resources, which ultimately led me to decide on attending HPU.”

Marco Sebastian, ’18

Marco Sebastian now works for Bloomberg LP as a hedge funds enterprise relationship manager. His experiences at HPU led him to where he is today.

“There were always chances to get involved and push myself academically, professionally and personally, whether I was in the classroom or doing extracurricular activities,” said Sebastian. “There were so many opportunities to reach out and speak with professionals in a variety of fields.”

Those opportunities to connect with professionals across the spectrum led Sebastian to his career at Bloomberg LP.

Through a unique HPU in the City experience, in which a group of students travel to New York City to network with various professionals at their place of work, Sebastian met executives at Bloomberg and found his place in the company.

The Office of Career and Professional Development helped connect Sebastain to the HPU in the City program and provided guidance that made a difference in his life, both personally and professionally.

Myles Brown, ’22

Myles Brown, a 2022 graduate from Chicago, Illinois, joined the Commercial Leadership Program at GE Healthcare. In this rotational program, Brown will work in three different cities over the span of two years. He will learn all aspects of the business development process and use his understanding of the company to shape his career beyond the program.

- Myles Brown, ’22

previous experience:

Mikaela Campbell, ’18

As a student, Mikaela Campbell completed internships with some of the best organizations in sports, including Under Armour, IMG College and USA Track and Field. Upon graduation, she secured a position with the National Basketball Association’s headquarters in New York City. Today, she is a manager of partnership marketing for the U.S. Soccer Federation. As she interacts with some of the top names in sports, she often finds herself reflecting on the Life Skills she gained at HPU.

“Every aspect of this university prepares students to go against the best of the best in the workforce,” said Campbell. “I believe the liberal arts education here is even more unique than most universities. We have more resources and connections available that allow students to get hands-on experience and one-on-one time with professionals in any field students may be interested in. That in itself helped me get to where I am now.”

As a member of the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication Advisory Board at HPU, Campbell played a role in providing input to the dean of the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication on how to best serve the needs of its students. This experience was a key moment for Campbell, as she saw that no matter what stage of her career she is in, she can make a positive impact on the world around her.

Rachel Deodato, ’24

Rachel Deodato joined Fox Business Network as a Production Assistant at The Big Money Show. Headquartered in New York, the business capital of the world, FBN launched in October 2007 and currently ranks among the top business channels on television. The network is available in nearly 80 million homes in all markets across the United States.

The journalism major from Brooklyn, New York, attributes her success to passionate professors and for providing a strong foundation in media, business and television.

“The Office of Career and Professional Development helped me with my resume and helped me land my first internship at FBN, which ultimately helped me land the full-time role I have today.”

Dr. Katelyn Long, ’15

When Dr. Katelyn Long applied to veterinary school, the research she had conducted as an undergraduate at High Point University was a big hit.

She studied animal cognition on lemurs and gibbons for three years alongside Dr. Joanne Altman, HPU’s director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works.

Having presented at multiple conferences, she had the confidence to discuss the findings in her veterinary school interviews. She went on to attend veterinary school at Iowa State University. Today, she’s a veterinarian at Banfield Pet Hospital in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Dr. Richard Byrd, ’16

Dr. Richard Byrd is a dentist and orthodontist. He received his undergraduate degree from High Point University in psychology, a passion he uncovered as a freshman. His studies at HPU made him a stellar candidate for dental school at the University of Michigan, and afterward an orthodontic residency at Howard University. Today, Byrd is a craniofacial orthodontic fellow at the University of Utah Health.

Byrd always knew a career in dentistry was what he wanted. When he questioned if a major in psychology would set him on the path to dental school, HPU mentors assured him he would leave HPU well-prepared and ready to stand out in the competitive field of dentistry.

“A lot of what made me attractive to dental schools was what I’d learned at HPU,” said Byrd. “Understanding how to master communication and knowing the values of teamwork, hard work, time management, empathy, perseverance and selflessness made me an attractive candidate.”

Emerson Heckler, ’24

Emerson Heckler benefited from HPU’s investments in science programs, facilities and faculty. After earning her neuroscience degree, she is now pursing a doctor of medicine program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine on the full-tuition Dean’s Medical Excellence Scholarship. She also was accepted to M.D. programs at Dartmouth and Virginia Commonwealth universities.

“HPU empowered me to go after my dreams – even as big and daunting as applying to medical school. They empowered me to embrace new opportunities, overcome obstacles and make meaningful contributions to both my campus community and the broader society.”
