IN THE STUDIO

Dean's Message

High Point University is celebrating its centennial this year. What a journey. From a small regional college to a nationally recognized university with thirteen schools and growing. While the arts have been around since the institution’s opening day, primarily through music (the only art form on campus in 1924), the David R. Hayworth School of Arts and Design found its form in 2010 with the performing arts joining in 2021. Though much has been gained, loss is a constant companion. In just the last couple of weeks, High Point University has lost two dear friends and champions of the arts: Mr. Randall Johnson and Dr. Morton Huber.

Randall Johnson, a graduate of High Point High School and Duke University, sponsored HPU’s Annual Piano competition that debuted in 2015. The competition brought some of the top pianists in the country to HPU. In 2021, funding shifted toward other annual events including: Disney in Concert (2022); Etienne Charles and Creole Soul (2023); and Amahl and the Night Visitors performed by the Greensboro Opera (2024). Through his generosity, Randall shared his passion for the arts with thousands of attendees over the years. We will miss him dearly.

Dr. Morton Huber was a professor of Chemistry at Emory & Henry College and the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan. While abroad, he nurtured his art by documenting his many experiences. Upon his return to the US, he immersed himself in artistic study and even taught painting for

many years in England where he became a fellow of the British Royal Society of Arts. Over the years, he has gifted HPU some beautiful pieces of his work and visited with our students. Even as I write this letter, Dr. Huber’s work is on full exhibition at the Sechrest Gallery, a robust showing of some of his favorite works that seek “to capture the luminous colorations and delicate effects of light and atmosphere discernable upon close observation of nature.” Farewell to a friend and artist who lived in the “miraculous beauty of the natural world.”

As we celebrate our centennial by looking at our past, it is the future that hopefully inspires us, because it is a promise unspoken and unwritten. History’s pen is often finite and enduring; but when one speaks through the arts with the pull of a brush or a stroke of a key, as the artist or the patron, what they leave behind is a history that bends uniquely to each person—in response to their lived experiences, their past, and, most importantly, their dreams.

World Premieres Abound at HPU

The 2023-2024 performance calendar showcased five world premieres for our performers in music and theater. The wind ensemble was treated to four new pieces composed by HPU faculty: "Occasional Dance" and "Point of Flight" by Dr. John Turner and "on rains and rapture" by Mr. Louis Raymond-Kolker that has been accepted for publication with C. Alan Publications. Mr. Raymond-Kolker also wrote an original composition for the HPU Chamber Singers after having read Dr. Charmaine Cadeau’s (HPU Associate Professor of English) published work “Reveal” (Placeholder, Brick Books, 2013). Theater students were treated to the inner workings of John Cariani’s creative process as they helped workshop his latest project Not Quite Almost .

ON RAINS AND RAPTURE : World Premiere

Performance, April 24th, High Point

University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mr. Louis Raymond-Kolker.

New Sounds

“ Working with the composer on the world premier of his piece, written with your ensemble in mind, is not something every music student has access to. It is an extraordinary learning opportunity to be able to ask the composer exactly what he means by each marking and to hear about all the details that were considered while writing the piece... Working with Mr. Kolker on his piece "on rains and rapture" was a fantastic learning and a great music-making experience!”

Faculty Invite Students to Participate in Creative Process

Mr. Raymond-Kolker wrote “on rains and rapture” to imagine what it would feel like to be a droplet of water – to have a defined sense of form and self, to lose one's self in a larger body of consciousness, and to be pulled from one's body and evaporate into the sky. The music constantly accelerates and builds in intensity, hinting at some impending doom, but instead arrives at the same place it began, implying a cyclical nature, both in water’s forms and in human experiences of life and beyond.

When the Stars Come Out …

HPU Students Collaborate with Renowned Playwright John Cariani

John Cariani, a Tony-nominated Broadway actor and renowned playwright, first visited HPU in 2008, to teach a series of theater workshops during an early production of his celebrated play Almost, Maine , which has become a worldwide phenomenon, performed in stages across the country and around the world.

While he was crafting Almost, Maine , which is a series of connected short plays that take place in a mythical, magical town in Northern Maine, Cariani found that some of the material he had written didn’t quite fit that piece. Over the past two years, he’s worked with Jay Putnam, Associate Professor of Theater, to craft these orphaned plays into a new work. Together with HPU students, they created Not Quite Almost , which explores similar themes to his original work, with a more grounded and realistic focus. Cariani visited campus several times during this process, working with the students to develop the play into a deeper and more meaningful whole.

“Mr. Cariani was diligent about listening to his audience and creating something breathtaking. It has been such an honor to work with him. I have learned so much and grown immensely as an artist.”

Cariani has performed in Something Rotten , The Band’s Visit , and Caroline, or Change , among others.

Explorations in Design

Graphic Design Goes to NYC

Graphic design students headed north to explore the Big Apple under the guidance of Professors Raynor and Dougherty. At the Cooper Hewitt, students participated in a pattern design workshop. Using a digital workstation students created designs and then projected them into an entire room to see how it would manifest as a wallpaper design. Professor Dougherty arranged for the group to meet a curator of The Poster House, who offered behind-the-scenes access to their permanent collection along with touring their exhibitions. The final stop included the archives of Milton Glaser, father of modern design, whose works include the "I Heart New York", the famous 1966 Bob Dylan album cover, and the DC Comics logo.

Kyler Koning, Mauren Vaughn, Noah Franks, Alishah Aamir, and Abigail Craig at The Poster House

“… the Poster House significantly informed how I conceptualized shape, line, and depth in my personal work … my award winning pieces "No Service" and "Heritage" featured in the 2024 International Artifact Bold gallery were deeply inspired by art deco and minimalist film posters from the 60’s which I enjoyed viewing original copies of at the New York National Archives.”

A Perfect Blend

HPU Faculty, Alumni, and Students Collaborate on ProBono Design

The High Point Design Institute, a program designed to allow student designers to connect with faculty alumni and community members to offer pro bono work, celebrated another successful opening in High Point, NC. Started by Dr. Jane Nichols, chair of the Department of Interior Design, Furnishings, and Fashion Merchandising, the HPDI invited Maddie Kiessling (Interior Design 2024) and Victoria Valentinas (Interior Design 2012) to design the interiors for A Special Blend, a non-profit coffee shop that provides employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Based on the concepts “dignity of work” and High Point’s local community, the design team found inspiration in the home furnishings industry and the railway that runs through town. Dr. Nichols also made sure the design was sensory-friendly and accessible.

It’s very important to apply what we’re learning in class to the real world because that’s how you really understand what you’re learning in class.”

… And the Band Plays On

HPU Students Selected for Intercollegiate Honor Band

Three HPU music students were selected to play in the inaugural North Carolina Intercollegiate Honor Band (NCIHB). Students from colleges and universities across the state were invited to submit recordings to audition for the band. The NCIHB selected Jared Bevacqua as first chair for the euphonium. The band’s rehearsals and performances were part of the annual North Carolina Music Educators Association convention in Winston-Salem – November 2023.

Music Ensembles Inspire Audiences across Italy and the Midwest

HPU students took to the road and the sky this past year. The Chamber Singers, led by Dr. Marc Foster, completed a tour of the Midwest, including Chicago, and the students from the Instrumental Division, led by HPU faculty Dr. Brian Meixner and Mr. Louis Raymond-Kolker, performed throughout Italy during a 10-day tour in May 2023. Concerts were held in Rome, Florence, and Venice.

“The Italy trip was truly a great experience. The churches … provided us with a great chance to adapt to different acoustics. Best of all, the whole trip really helped us get to know each other better as friends rather than just band members, which has transformed the whole wind ensemble for the better.”

Art in Action

Art seniors Charlotte Booker, Madi Lovell, Laine Polmateer, and Grace Mindt team up with Professor Raynor to take on a mural in the Hayworth Fine Arts Center. The mural’s goal is to provide visual interest to one of the upstairs hallways. Students chose to represent their peers in the performing arts (dance, music, theater).

Drawing from the Masters

A group of eight Studio Art and Graphic Design students visited the Manet/Degas Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and were given an in-depth historical context tour of these two important Impressionists. Afterwards, students were given the opportunity to draw directly in front of the works under the supervision of Professor Raynor.

Real World Conversations

Fashion Merchandising students traveled to NYC to study merchandising practices and retail spaces. One stop included the Atelier Beaute Chanel experience in SOHO, where the Marketing Director spoke about the types of events, promotions, and customer service that they create for customers. Back in North Carolina, students visited Kontoor Brands, a global lifestyle apparel company. The senior vice president of Lee welcomed them, a prelude before his team went through various roles in the Merchandising, Marketing, and Design unit.

In addition to the extraordinary experiential learning offered by the High Point Furniture Market, High Point University also hosts top nationally-acclaimed designers on campus to provide important guidance and networking opportunities. This year HPU welcomed Dann Foley, Evette Rios, Nancy Fire, and Shay Geyer who shared a wide range of career directions for students majoring in interior design.

ID and FMD Students Study in Japan

Dr. Victoria Brown and Professor Brandon Jones led the educational excursion, introducing students to the culture and designs of Japan. Outings included tours of temples, museums, and retails spaces, a workshop on textile design, and a class in kimono dress. By the end of the four weeks, interdisciplinary teams of ID and FMD students created patterns to be applied to a small retail shop of their design that they also merchandised with product.

The most impactful aspect of the trip was being able to witness people's passion and purpose through the many design components. It motivated me to be more secure in my own design ideas when working on projects; … to "get lost" in the idea of being unique or extravagant.

At the time of hire in 2011, Dr. Burrows was a worldclass singer having appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Santa Fe Orchestra, Boston Pops and Symphony, Tanglewood Orchestra, Eugene Symphony, Phoenix Chamber Orchestra and Pops, New Jersey Symphony, June Opera Festival of New Jersey, Eugene Opera, New York Repertory Theater, Pasadena Chamber Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Orchestra, Oxford Symphony Orchestra and Oregon Bach Festival. Some of the conductors she has worked with include; Seiji Ozawa, Helmuth Rilling, Marin Alsop, John Williams, Gunther Schuller, and the late, great Leonard Bernstein. It is perhaps no surprise that her students have won regional and national awards and successfully matriculated into some of the top music graduate programs in the nation: Florida State University, Michigan State University, Peabody Institute at John Hopkins to name a few.

Dr. Burrows will be sorely missed. Her enthusiasm and passion for music is palpable and she champions its inherent relevance to life itself. For that alone, she has changed the lives of so many.

Dr. Burrows at the Wild Symphony concert.
