elcome to the next chapter in the transformation of High Point University.
Here, hundreds of students will discover their future through jobs and internships inside a building rarely found on any college campus in the nation. They’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. The building bears the name of President Dr. Nido Qubein and his wife, Mariana, HPU’s First Lady. They helped make this building happen. But they

A PLACE OF CONNECTION The conference center can hold as many as 1,500 people, be subdivided into nearly a dozen breakout rooms and become a place that can captivate any audience with an audiovisual system that includes 54 speakers and a screen that’s 43 feet wide and as tall as a two-story home. But the center is more than just a beautiful room with a wall of windows. It’s a place of connection for so many. Students will find an invaluable mentor when they conduct research with a faculty member and present their findings during a symposium inside the conference center. They’ll intern in the building, gain work experience in their major and attend a career fair where they’ll impress recruiters, land a job and see a dream become real. Well-known speakers will come. Global leaders, too. Paired with the arena, the conference center will bring the world to HPU and the city of High Point and offer limitless possibilities that will help the community at large grow.
Our faculty here care about the students far beyond academic success. They care about us as humans. They want us to develop ethically and morally. So, the word ‘professor’ is such an understatement. They’re life coaches. They’re developing us to be the best possible people we can be. Shirley Garrett, Class of 2019 Duke University School of Law, Class of 2024

THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE
People truly care here. They make us feel comfortable, valued and respected. I have a lot of friends who go to college from North Carolina to Hawaii, and they don’t have the relationship with the faculty and staff we have here.
HPU’s strong academics, its commitment to developing character, instilling values and promoting life skills for success in all students made HPU an easy choice for us.

in North Carolina and the architects who designed the arena created the home court for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. The HPU Panthers, both the men’s and women’s team, will play on the Tubby and Donna Smith Court. They’re two alumni who met on campus decades ago. They married, raised four children and Tubby went on to a storied NCAA career that included winning the 1998 national championship with Kentucky.
Our players are excited to get over there because our arena is what you find at Big 10 or ACC schools. Now they’re proud to protect it. They’re saying, ‘This Is Our House!’ and the fans who come see us play will see it as their house, too. Chelsea Banbury, coach of the HPU women’s basketball team

THE PRACTICAL SIDE OF ELEGANCE Walk into the hotel and the first thing seen is the grand piano. It sits at the base of a grand marble staircase that stretches like a curved letter X beneath a crystal chandelier and a fine-dining restaurant on the second floor. But the boutique hotel offers more than simply beauty and panache. It really is one big classroom. Students in hospitality management, HPU’s newest major, will learn firsthand what it takes to run a hotel. And they will do just that in the Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel with the help of HPU professors and Sheri Decker, the hotel’s general manager, a veteran of the hospitality industry with nearly 40 years of experience. The Kahn Hotel will become a learning lab integrated into the curriculum of the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication. This academic configuration will set HPU apart and give hospitality management majors vital experience to succeed in their career. Guests will step into 30 rooms full of tasteful details distinctive to High Point University. Watercolors depict recognizable campus scenes through the hallway and rooms, and, in every room, guests will find a purple “God, Family, Country” pillow created specifically for the Kahn Hotel.

A MILESTONE MOMENT
I sincerely hope this will be a community center where we can have concerts and speakers and events and holiday events so the entire community, the entire Triad region and beyond can be a part of the university and benefit from its stewardship.
The complex also reflects the values of HPU. High Point University, The Premier Life Skills University, is a God, family, country school.
HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein
On that Friday, the concepts of experiential learning as well as faith, family and patriotism became tangible. On a stage framed by two American flags, leaders spoke, prayed and proclaimed Friday as Nido and Mariana Qubein Day. High Point Mayor Jay Wagner also presented Mariana Qubein with a key to the city. Minutes later, with a huge pair of gold scissors in his hands, Dr. Qubein cut the thick purple ribbon in front of a fleet of doors. As the Marching Panthers played, the crowd of expectant guests streamed into the atrium to see the arena, the concourse, the conference center and the court. Nearly a thousand guests stood shoulder to shoulder when the Marching Panthers broke into The Temptations’ classic “Get Ready.”
They couldn’t wait because they knew it was a day to remember, a day never to forget.
They all came because they were ready. They wanted to participate in one of the biggest days in the history of High Point University. As a lifelong resident of High Point, I grew up a number of blocks back in the other direction, and I’ve been passing by this campus most of my life, and I’ve been privileged to see firsthand the transformational growth that has taken place under Dr. Qubein and Mrs. Qubein’s leadership. It’s been phenomenal.
It was a day years in the making, September 24, 2021. HPU officially opened a complex that’s like no other found on any college or university campus nationwide. The complex will bring together under one roof academics and athletics, entertainment and community events and will not only enrich the college

city of High Point and the entire region. Since he’s been here, nothing Dr. Qubein does ceases to amaze me. When I hear he’s undertaking something, I just nod and watch it happen.
The Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center and the Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel will become the place to be. For students, it’ll be the place to become.
Jay Wagner, mayor of the city of High Point
The complex reflects one of the hallmarks of an HPU education –– experiential learning. Students will intern and work inside the complex and acquire life skills crucial in helping them succeed in business and in life.

PROUD TO BE AN HPU STUDENT I heard it before I went out there. “You’ll be the first person to speak in the Qubein Arena!” I had made presentations before in front of my Air Force ROTC unit. So, I was used to public speaking. But when I walked onstage and the lights went down, everyone started clapping. I heard my buddies yell, ‘Hey, Matt!’, and I kept thinking, ‘I haven’t said anything yet.’ I knew then I’d better not mess up. I didn’t. I got to introduce Lee Greenwood, and it was such a surreal honor. He and I worked on the details together on what I was going to say. The whole time, I was sort of starstruck. Such an insane opportunity. It shows how High Point University feels about ROTC, the military in general and how much trust they put in us, their students, someone like me. That’s who we are. High Point University is a God, family, country school, and Saturday night really tied into the country part. Lee Greenwood sang ‘God Bless the U.S.A.’ to open Saturday’s concert, and the crowd loved it. I did, too. But I know that song resonates with more than just me. It resonates with High Point University and mirrors the values that are important to our school. Being an ROTC cadet, I really appreciate that. And I appreciate High Point University. I’ve spent four years of my life here, and I’ve grown immensely. When I graduate, I’ll go into the Air Force where my dream is to become a fighter pilot, and I know HPU supports that dream. The lessons and mindset I’ve developed here will serve me well for the rest of my life. I am proud to be an HPU student.

A C R E AT I V E WAY T O L E A R N For two hours, I ran on adrenaline. I was surrounded by my friends, working as a team and broadcasting on the jumbotron and the other video screens inside the Qubein Center the Train concert that Saturday night. I couldn’t believe how fast it went by. It felt like five minutes. After the concert, we clapped so loud and hit the table so hard we knocked the phone off. We were just so happy. I remember saying, ‘This is what I want to do after I graduate.’ This was my friend’s idea, Thomas Hart. He wanted to get used to the equipment before the basketball season started because we’ll be helping broadcast games on ESPN+. So, he asked, and High Point University said yes. They gave us an opportunity to work on something big –– a concert by Train at the grand opening of the Qubein Center. And I got to do it with my friends. What a fun way to collaborate. It just shows you how purposeful, intentional and caring High Point University is. The faculty and staff always go out of their way to provide students opportunities beyond the classroom. It’s what you can put on a resume and what can give you an edge wherever you go. No matter where I go, I know I have the experience to be successful. I also know I have a university that will continue to support me.
