PRESIDENT‘S CIRCLE H O N O R RO L L O F D O N O RS

2020 EDITION (JUNE 1, 2019 – MAY 31, 2020)

DEAR FRIENDS: Thank you for your continued support of High Point University — you embody the spirit of the caring people we talk about each day. Your continued stewardship has enabled us to transform our campus, enrich our academic programs, support outstanding students, and attract stellar faculty and staff. As the Premier Life Skills University, we are dedicated to providing students with opportunities to develop life skills, foster their personal values and build character, gain practical experience, and expand their knowledge through academic excellence. This is what distinguishes HPU graduates from those at other universities. Philanthropic partnerships with our alumni, families and friends have been a cornerstone of High Point University’s success. Each fall, we recognize our leadership supporters in the President’s Circle Honor Roll publication for the preceding fiscal year. In the pages that follow, you will find the names of those individuals, foundations and corporations who have supported this 96-year-old institution over the duration of a lifetime with gifts in excess of $100,000, and on an annual basis with contributions of $1,924 or more, between June 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020. Additionally, we celebrate the gifts of those who have chosen to invest through the Sterling Society with a planned gift, and our most dedicated alumni who have given three or more consecutive years (some of whom have exceeded 30 or more years) through our League of Loyal Alumni. Though the last year has been challenging, we move steadily forward. Your willingness to step forward and share the gifts that God has blessed you with buoys our hearts and propels us forward in the transformational journey that lies ahead for us all. Please join me today in renewing your leadership support for HPU. With gratitude,

Nido R. Qubein ’70 President, High Point University

True generosity involves giving, not just giving back. It means giving with no expectation of repayment. - Nido R. Qubein

“ High Point University has given me so many amazing opportunities to grow as a professional and a person. From receiving a Presidential Scholarship and being a member of the Student Government Association Executive Council, to serving as a Board Member for the Media Fellows Program and spending a day with High Point University’s Journalist in Residence Byron Pitts at ABC Studios, I am grateful each day to attend a university that sees me as more than just a number and helps me grow.” — J oe Maronski ’23 Miller Place, NY

“ Being an Honors Scholar and Presidential Scholar at HPU has afforded me priceless opportunities that I would not have had at other universities, and for that I am grateful. In my two years at HPU, I have completed Research Rookies and been a participant in three research projects; to date, I have two scholarly publications and two creative publications.” — Vivian McAllister ’22 High Point, NC

COVID-19 has created many unforeseen challenges across all sectors of the economy, including higher education. The HPU Cares Fund was established to meet the University’s most pressing needs and to support faculty, staff, students and community. In a matter of days, our faculty prepared their course material to be taught from a distance. Academic support staff, like Student Success Coaches and Career Advisors, provided remote life skills coaching. Our Student Life team worked day and night to assist students as they transitioned away from campus. We shipped essential academic items to students who were unable to return for their personal belongings and increased transportation needs as students were driven to airports across North Carolina. We also reached out to individuals and organizations within the City of High Point to donate supplies and services to those in need.

“ Scholarships have made my studies at HPU possible. They have helped families like mine make dreams a reality, and allowed me to graduate from my University with the credibility to be a successful designer.” — Christina Anastasio ’20 Clover, SC

“ In many ways, HPU sculpted my future. The University gave me a chance to start over and explore who I really was. At every step along the way, the faculty and staff were there to support me when I needed it. Through the lessons I learned in the classrooms and in extracurricular activities, I feel prepared to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead post-graduation.” — Alex Bush ’20 Aspen, CO

“ Scholarships have assisted me in continuing my education at High Point University. I truly appreciate how much HPU’s donors care about student success.” — Genevieve Zipp ’22 Toms River, NJ

High Point University is the place that brought us together. I feel that High Point has been a conduit of several crisscrossing paths, and I thank God for giving me those gentle nudges, and along the way He’s nudged me into other people’s paths. This was the case, of course, when I met Debi and also met Paul. — J orge Lagueruela ’79 Trinity, NC Jorge ’79 and Debra ’79 Lagueruela surprised longtime friend and fellow HPU alumnus, Paul Lessard ’80, by naming the HPU Men’s Soccer locker room in his honor with a seven-figure gift to the University.

FOREVER FAMILIES In honor and celebration of their students’ milestone achievements at HPU, many families continue to make charitable gifts after Commencement. Family commitment sets the tone for a graduate’s future involvement with his or her alma mater. We celebrate those Forever Families who have made a leadership commitment between June 1, 2019, and May 31, 2020.

DIVERSITY OPPORTUNITY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND Following Dr. Qubein’s September 2019 unveiling of HPU’s 10-year, $1 billion growth plan, including the announcement of $700 million in scholarships focused on first generation students, diversity, academic excellence and veterans, a number of families and alumni have stepped forward to make an impact. With their support, the University saw an 18.8% growth to the endowment in 2019-2020. Among these scholarships is the Diversity Opportunity Endowed Scholarship Fund, given by the parents of a current HPU student. The fund is designed to support minority students at HPU and increase the diversity of the student body. The donors hope that the increased financial aid will support the University in recruiting excellent students and assist those students in their efforts to work hard, pursue their dreams and live lives of significance.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

With this scholarship, I am able to pursue my dreams of becoming a Panther. It will open many doors in my life that will allow me to become successful. — Jermani Kea ’24 Greensboro, NC 2020-2021 Diversity Opportunity Endowed Scholarship Recipient

THE SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY In conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Women’s Equality Day, High Point University announced a $12 million gift from Elizabeth “Betty” Miller Strickland. This is the largest endowment gift HPU has received since its founding in 1924. This generous gift will be recognized in perpetuity through the creation of two endowments, along with the Elizabeth Miller Strickland Scholarship Plaza located behind Roberts Hall. The Elizabeth Miller Strickland Scholarship Plaza will celebrate, recognize and inspire existing and future endowment donors, while also providing a location for students to reflect on the impact of philanthropy in their own lives and academic pursuits. Three sculptures depicting recent HPU graduates in their cap and gown will be installed in the Plaza this fall.

Elizabeth Miller Strickland Strickland attended High Point College, where she was crowned Miss High Point College in 1952. She strongly believes in investing in an education that equips students with the values HPU upholds. “HPU has come so far since I attended, it’s unrecognizable,” says Strickland. “I want to be a part of the values being taught and fostered at the University.” “I deeply believe in High Point University and want students to realize their dream of attending a God, Family and Country university can come true. My husband, Bob, and I have always believed that you don’t go to college to simply learn how to make a living, but you also go to college to learn how to live. HPU’s mentorship model and practice of equipping students with life skills allow that to happen.”

ELIZABETH MILLER STRICKLAND WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL The Elizabeth Miller Strickland Women’s Leadership Fund will provide a platform to inspire the achievement of gender equality. A newly formed Elizabeth Miller Strickland Women’s Leadership Council will steward Mrs. Strickland’s mission, intent and values, and will work to identify and overcome barriers women face in leadership roles, entrepreneurship and economic opportunities, and education. The desired outcome associated with the creation of the Elizabeth Miller Strickland Women’s Leadership Fund is to provide inspiration, mentorship and opportunities for young women to achieve their dreams. The Council will develop seminars and programs focused on issues relevant to women in business, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Elizabeth Miller Strickland Endowed Scholarship

Elizabeth Miller Strickland has made it possible for me to become the international businesswoman I have always aspired to be. –K eilah Moore ’23 Rocky Mount, NC

The scholarship will support students returning to HPU after their freshman year with demonstrated financial need. The goal of the fund is to encourage and allow outstanding students to fulfill their dream of a four-year education at HPU. The students will be able to keep the scholarship through the duration of their undergraduate studies.

The generosity of Mrs. Strickland has made it possible for me to move forward in achieving my dreams. After graduating from the Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy, I hope to return to Timberlake, NC, and work at our local hospital.

Without the support from the Elizabeth Miller Strickland Endowed Scholarship, I would not have the opportunity to attend HPU. – Taylor Barr ’23 Trinity, NC

– Case Wilkerson ’24 Timberlake, NC

TRAILBLAZER AWARD Each year, the Trailblazer Award will be given at Honors Day to a graduating female student who epitomizes the qualities of hard work, passion for service, perseverance and determination. The winner will be required to donate a portion of the cash award to a charity of her choice.

For further information regarding supporting HPU students through a named scholarship endowment, please contact Chris Dudley ’94, Senior Vice President for Development, at 336.841.4530 or cdudley@highpoint.edu.

High Point College changed my life for the better in so many ways. Meeting David Francis and creating a lifelong friendship, and through him his wife, nee Betty Ann Lord, and their children and grandchildren has been an inexpressible blessing in my life. In the spring of 1954, I met the love of my life through a "Fellowship Team" created by Miss Clarice Bowman. The moment I saw Joan Parker sitting at the keyboard as the substitute pianist, I fell in love! In June 2020, we celebrated our 64th anniversary. We have three children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. All of them know that HPU has a special place in our hearts, a significant place in our charitable giving and a place in our Charitable Remainder Trust. The greatest honor of my life is being a lifelong Trustee of my alma mater. If HPU had a retirement community, I'd spend my last days on campus!

It is difficult to remember the volume of new procedures and challenges of not only wearing protective equipment all shift, but also keeping mentally sharp in this stressful situation. I work with a team of amazing and dedicated health care professionals that support each other and make sure we are always doing what is right and safe. Even though this has been a life changing event for all, it has resulted in confirming my true passion in life of becoming a nurse and caring for others. — Nicole Merry ’19

NIDO AND MARIANA H. QUBEIN ARENA, CONFERENCE CENTER AND KAHN HOTEL High Point University’s most prominent and ambitious capital project to-date — the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center — is quickly coming to fruition and is slated for a Summer 2021 opening. This venue will be HPU’s most visible and utilized campus resource, serving as a hub for campus and community events and activities. This impressive, multipurpose facility will include a 4,200-seat sports arena, a stately conference center and meeting space for up to 2,500 people. A 30-room luxury boutique hotel is also part of the project, named for Jana and Ken Kahn, who are nationally-respected leaders in the media, publishing and trade show industry. Recognized as the Premier Life Skills University, HPU will utilize the facility as a learning lab, providing hands-on opportunities for students pursuing majors in the University’s new event and hospitality management programs.

For more information about investing in the project or naming a prominent location within the Qubein Center, please contact Darren Hill, Director of Major Gifts - Athletics, at 336.841.9555 or dhill1@highpoint.edu.
