WHO NEEDS A STANDARD RESUME?
We suggest that everyone starts with a standard resume, as many employers are most familiar with looking at a standard resume format. Some majors that should have a standard resume include Business, Education, undergraduate sciences, Engineering, and Computer Science. Standard resumes are also a good choice for liberal arts majors depending on your specific career path.
RESUME: FORMATTING
Length
o For undergrads and applications for entry-level positions, resumes should be one page
o For alumni with several years of experience, resumes can be two pages
Contact Information
o We recommend having your name in size 18-20 point font
o List your phone number and email address. Using your HPU email is acceptable, but a professional email (yourname@gmail for instance) is preferred if you are a senior or graduate/alum
o LinkedIn web address is optional
o Remove any hyperlinks from email and LinkedIn
o You may list a mailing address if you feel it will aid in applying for a job specific in that geographic area; otherwise, just list city, state or a target area at your discretion
Formatting
o Make sure your font sizes, bolding, italics, and heading styles are consistent throughout
Font Size
o Font size should be 10.5, 11, or 12 point for the body of the resume
o Margins should be no less than 0.5 inches on all sides
o Some examples of easy-to-read font styles are Arial, Calibri, and Times New Roman
o We recommend that the font you use encapsulates the image of the job for which you are applying. For instance, look at the company’s website and see what font they use to give you a good guide for what you should use on your resume for a job in that organization
Bullet Points
o Include two - six bullets per experience
o Ensure the actual bullet points used (circles, etc.) are professional and consistent throughout, including main bullets and any sub-bullets used
o Connect related phrases together with a semi-colon to reduce the number of bullet points
Chronology
o Items in each section should be written in reverse chronological order (your most recent experiences listed first)

WHO NEEDS A CREATIVE RESUME?
You should consider a creative resume if you’re interested in working in communication, marketing, art, design or performance. Other majors can consider using a creative resume, but do your research before so you are catering to the jobs you’re interested in!
CREATIVE RESUME: DESIGN TIPS
If design or artistic skills are needed for the position in which you are applying, a creative resume may be appropriate. Conversely, if the role that you are applying for is of a more analytical or scientific nature, stick with a standard resume format and layout.
Creative resumes are intended to represent your professional and creative self. While they should be unique to you, your experiences, and your industry they should follow the same standards as a traditional resume:
• Limit to one page
• Demonstrate consistency in the formatting of font style, font size, spacing, and order of content
• Exhibit a professional layout that is simplistic, clean, organized
• Feature descriptive bullet points starting with proper verb tenses
• Be targeted and revised for each job/internship description
Creative resumes can be made with all types of platforms (Word, Canva, Adobe InDesign/Illustrator, etc.). Find the platform that works best for you and your skill level. No matter which platform you choose, remember:
• Use gender neutral colors
• Only Theatre, Music, and Dance majors/minors should include a head shot
• Include links to your online portfolio, LinkedIn, or professional social media pages
• Save your resume as a PDF before emailing or uploading to preserve the formatting
Remember, this will serve as your first example of your design skills. Your resume should be free of errors and grammatically correct.
