Dear Readers,

Dear Readers,

Dear Readers,

I want to wish all our readers a very happy new year. The current issue of HPF is about new beginnings and celebrations of the most significant phase of one’s life, marriage!! As they say, one goes through many transitions in life. Each has its own importance but marriage has the most impact on one’s life in a major way. So, people read through the issue and use the tips that we have shared with you. I hope you enjoy every little step that leads up to your marriage, and most definitely, the marriage itself. As the saying goes, “Love is an ideal thing, marriage is the real thing.” Going further, I am proud to announce that for the first time in Pakistan a magazine publication has merged itself with one of the biggest communication medium which is the “cellular network.” Are objective is continuous end user’s feedback on our content as well as an additional service to our advertisers entailing them to receive accurate response on their products. Although, currently on a test project basis, our aim is to amalgamate this feature exclusively with HPF on a regular basis, and hence be able to quantify our valued responses in form of a complete database for future. Yet another milestone achieved by HPF!! Enjoy!

Winters have always been a season of festivities for ages in our country, vibrant weddings, New Year celebrations, Basant and not to mention the lavish outdoor bonfires & scrumptious barbecues have made this season the most cherished season. Recently, Lahore witnessed three consecutive days of the spectacular Bridal Couture Week, including some of the most celebrated designers in our country. Ather Shehzad’s show set the ramp on fire, as Iman Ali added an X-factor to the ramp, and HSY stunned the audience with the beautiful Reema being a showstopper for an extravagant show. HPF was a proud sponsor of the Bridal Couture week, and I wish to give a shout out to all those who supported the event. No doubt, Pakistani weddings have immensely changed and progressed in terms of our occasions, rituals, customs & traditions. Brides are so much more confident, and hiring an event planner is a must-have to create the larger-than-life wedding. The Bridal market has become vast; every bride wants to be different and special. Hence, this issue of HPF is devoted to all those who are tying the knot this season, since we understand how crucial it is for you brides and grooms out there to make your wedding day the most memorable one in your life, HPF is glad to help. Cheers!

It’s never an easy task taking over the mantle of editor but like they say, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger! Having toyed with ambitious dreams for my editorial debutant issue, I’m quite pleased to have reached almost all the goals I set out to achieve; the only possible collateral being our mental wellbeing. After countless swooshing deadlines, last minute change - arounds and late hours of the night sipping coffee and blankly staring into computer screens, we’re proud to introduce High Profiles Wedding issue! Cramped from start to end with all the things you’ll ever need to know about weddings, this issue is a resource whether you’re attending a wedding or getting married yourself. We have our fingers crossed so you won’t have to. Sit back and enjoy a special editorial feast, from us to you.

Inspired by an eclectic mix of east and west, where tradition is a cornerstone in his designing especially for bridal couture. His experimental, at times, edgy work with accessorizing and silhouettes, pose him as a strong contender for contemporary fashion. That is why his design philosophy is extremely diverse, where his collections are a mix of eastern and western inspirations. Tilted towards eastern couture, Fahad works with a wide spectrum, he wants to design, to fit in all budget graphs. His attention to detail and eye for styling got him noticed and after a few years of hard work, Fahad is now safely amongst the list of those young designers who not only have a lot of potential but also a lot of promise for the future of our industry.

Hoorain

Depicting the queen of hoors (girls of paradise), ‘Hoorain by Saima Yousaf’ has breathed a new life into the couture arena by reaching out to women looking for that extra touch of class, with a certain fantastical fancy. Focusing more on opulently embellished evening wear designed specially for the woman willing to deck herself out in all that glitters, ‘Hoorain’ focuses on styles that depict intricate crystal, sequins and mirror work, on embroidered fabrics needle-worked to perfection. A pret line is also available under the label of ‘Just Hoorain’ and consists of kurtis and tops for those young enough and daring enough to pull them off. Saima has just introduced a new line ‘Cute n Funky’ for girls six to sixteen years of age. All in all, Hoorain is a fashion statement to those interested in sliding away from typical fashion norms ready to try something different yet embedded within traditional sensibilities.

Stripes, florals, abstract and graphic prints, prints of cats, birds, dogs (Miu Miu), strawberries (Tao), dinosaurs (Giles) just to name a few. Nearly everything goes when it comes to prints. This goes for leggings and pants too. How do we wear these? • Pair printed pants with a minimalistic tunic or blouse. • Do not use too many accessories with them. • Let the pants be the center of the outfit. • Pair them up with classic items like blazers.

This winter, a Himalayan- inspired look will set the trend for your closet. Sheer overlays, patchwork plaid ponchos, and wraps were seen in most of the fall collections, Diane Von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney & Ferragamo to name a few. It’s time to flaunt those wraps and knitted ponchos and cardis! I’m sure you already have them in your closet, but how about a few more?

Hot reds, bright yellows and golds are going to be top priority for your wardrobe, this season. Make an impression with a bang, dare to experiment! If too much colour freaks you out, try to add tiny pieces to your look, a clutch, belt or even bright neon leggings could do it for you. One option is a mod-inspired monochromatic look (like at Pucci). For the truly bold, wear a pair with either a pattern (like at Moschino) or graphic print (like at Balenciaga). The unexpected pop of colour is perfectly refreshing. Metallic golds and silvers are a very sexy option to bedazzle your wardrobe for this party season! 53

amas is an obvious and foremost choice that comes to mind when one is planning to buy wedding jewellery. Not only is jewellery the most expensive item on a wedding list but it also has the most long lasting affects in a woman’s life. Ruby Choudhry took the initiative to bring Damas to Pakistan and is successfully running this brand. Since recently, Taimoor Choudhry, her son and

the GM for Damas is actively running the multi brand outlet. Taimoor is a graduate from the University of McGill, in Canada. Besides managing Damas, he loves to fly planes and enjoys activities that stimulate his brain. Like most young girls my age, apart from the excitement of getting married, the anticipation of owning my own jewellery is another charm attached to marriage. The first name that came to my mind when I thought of buying

my wedding jewellery was ‘Damas.’ Thus, through a common friend I got an appointment with Taimoor to help me decide what jewellery I should buy, and why I should buy it? As I entered Damas, I found Taimoor Choudhry waiting for me at the entrance. An authority on jewellery as expected, he started showing me the various brands and ranges of jewellery in the shop. He also educated me on what I will need as small gifts to give to

TIPS BY TAIMOOR He recommends that a bride should first decide her jewellery and then choose her dress. You can have clothes made accordingly, it’s easier. A lot of people bring their designers here and they see the set and build the dress around it. If you wear a big neckpiece that you want all the attention on, then don’t wear big earrings. He advices that on your Barat, you should be traditional and on your Valima, you can be as modern as you want. Coming to Damas is not like coming in to buy just one piece of jewellery, it’s the whole wedding that you need to keep in mind. There are all sorts of price ranges. Some people have expensive taste, while others may like just about anything. The company / brand attaches the price, so it’s very fair.

certain people and my in-laws, which is part of our marriage traditions and something I was unaware of. I didn’t know about the Rasams. He guided me on what to give who, and why. Then, we went on to the bridal section. First, he showed me what most people wear on their Barat. This varied, from heavy polki sets to heavy diamond sets and then to more stylish sets, depending on the taste of the customers. If someone likes something and wants slight changes, he sketches for them, to

help them visualise. Next, came the more modern, wedding jewellery such as the brand ‘Legacy’. He could tell from the smile on my face that I liked it, so we sat there, to have a cup of tea. This jewellery was for the modern day women, women who like spending money, wisely. Once we sat down, he asked me a few questions. This, he explained, was a way for him to do a background check on his clients. This makes it easier for him to access what they would like, if

they like traditional stuff or will only diamonds, be their choice. He said it takes him about 15-20 minutes to figure out the client’s taste. I decided what I wanted to wear on my engagement and he enlightened me on plenty of other uses of that particular set. He told me how I could wear this set on other occasions. After a long talk, he suggested that I come over with my designer and then choose, the MOST important jewellery that I will ever own! He

explained how it is easier to have a dress made according to your SET, rather than choosing a dress first and then being left with limited options, for your jewellery.

While shoes and bags may not make the woman, they certainly have a strong effect on her self-confidence – which ironically does make the woman. Most females have a fetish for shoes and bags, in general. Just imagine what goes on in their head when they have to pick out, what to wear on their Big Day!? Even though brands like Fendi and Coco Chanel have amazing things to offer, a Pakistani bride can’t pull them off with her extremely colourful ‘lehnga’. So, here are a few ideas on how to get your bling on, without letting go of your fetish.

Man of

Style

Knowing what to wear to a black-tie wedding is easy; knowing what to wear for every other wedding can be a challenge. Especially, if you’re a male wedding guest who wants to look his absolute best, in the most up to date wedding outfit for the occasion. Following is a guide to what’s trending in men’s suits, which translates to wedding fashions for male guests at a wedding.

64

G

ood suits for this decade will take the best elements from the peak eras of men’s suiting (think the formality of the Victorian era, the savoir faire of the 1930s and the skinny detailing of the 1960s) and apply them to a modern silhouette. Yes, suits in 2010 and 2011 are all about classic elements but there are still plenty of factors away from the trend elements that you have to contemplate. Consider all of the following before making an investment in a suit this year. The Cut of the Suit Think of a cut that accents a sense of the masculine • Broad shoulders • Slim waist • Slim trousers Double Breasted Suits & Sports coats • Pairs broad shouldered with a slim waist • Designed to accent and to heighten the perfect masculine shape • On selecting a double-breasted suit look for the ‘Kent’ cut, where a longer lapel line extends into the waist. Three-Piece Suits • The waistcoat has to be conservative and, thus, in the same fabric as the suit’s other two pieces • On selecting a perfect three-piece suit, look for a waistcoat whose V shape breaks somewhere between the sternum and the base of the rib cage.

a gentleman looks. So unless you’re over 6’ 2”, avoid a single-buttoned suit. Two buttons It conveys height, slims the waist, and fits perfectly within the realm of fashion and classicism. Three buttons Conveys a greater sense of height than a two button suit, but are harder to pull off. Three buttoned suits have also been seen amongst the tailored wares of Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label. The Shoulder British rolled shoulder: • Has the padding extend over the shoulder and roll down into the sleeve • Designed to make the shoulders seem broader and the arms better built. Vents • Choose a suit with two side vents • This rule does not apply if you are buying a dinner suit • A suit jacket with side vents is always preferential due to the perfect silhouette it can provide. Choosing a suit may very well be the most important factor when it comes to building a man’s wardrobe. A suit is the definitive male uniform in the modern world. So make sure that you know what you want!

The Fabric / Suit Cloth • Wool • Linen • Cotton Buttons One button The more buttons a suit jacket has the taller Everyone needs a good suit, if you have a nice suit, you’ll be able to find your own. Get enter in a lucky draw. Text SUIT to 2323. Mobilink and Telenor users text to 03012345678

Collars & cuffs The choice of accessories, in men’s segment is limited. Put on a tie and a nice pair of cufflinks and you’re good to go. The only problem with that is that today, men are experimenting with their appearance, more than ever before. So, we decided to give those men options to create their desired look…

Neckties satisfy a modern man’s desire to dress in art. A ser well t iou ied s s ti tep e is in the lif e. firs

Cuff-links give a simple shirt a very rich and elegant look. t

TiME to get married! Everyone loves dressing up in Gucci and Prada. Sure, they’re expensive but once you put them on, the world just seems like a better place… Money well spent! However, branded items are not the most common thing you’ll find in Pakistan. Keeping this in mind, Buksh group launched ‘MEN’S STORE’, spread across Karachi, Lahore & Islamabad with international brands like Armani, Boss & Gucci, under its umbrella. Men’s Store now has exclusive representation of 14 international brands in Pakistan like Fendi, Ermenegildo Zegna, Paciotti, Brioni, Jimmy Choo & Chloe. So there are plenty of options to choose from.

Happy shopping!

R The timeless wedding ring. R A killer haircut with a shiny shave (perfume and aftershave helps). R A two button lightweight cool wool suit, preferably in a dark colour (darker suits always portray a more formal ensemble). R A well fitted plain shirt not too dark; a colour which brings out the complexion in you (make sure it’s a classic collar with French cuffs). R Black shoes if your suit is black, navy blue or grey (your shoes should be simple, you are not going to a club or a fashion show). R A wrist watch (at this occasion, there is no limit to the amount of bling you have on your wrist, as long as your watch is in proportion to your wrist.) R Ornamental cufflinks, semiprecious stones , silver and gold cufflinks won’t hurt. R If possible, the groom should try to match his tie and pocket square with at least one colour of the brides clothing (the wedding pictures come out fantastic and timeless. It shows the groom has taken the time out to match his clothes with the bride). R Chrome finished belt. Please avoid dull finishes, they are considered casual. R Make sure your socks match your suit colour!!! R Brand new underwear!! R Seven to nine fantastic shirts in vibrant colours and three to four pants for post wedding dinners. R Clearly define your wedding budget. Clearly define who is going to pay for what and how much, and then stick to it. R Accommodations for any of the groom’s attendants who have to travel from out-of-town. R Honeymoon transportation (to airport, etc.). R The perfectly planned complete honeymoon (this cannot be stressed enough. Make your wife feel you’re always on top of your game and you always know what you’re doing next). R A maulvi, clergy member or priest who can dispense a legal marriage license. Make sure you have his fee. R A wedding gift for the bride. R An endearing smile for all. In a time when nothing is more certain than change, the

commitment

of two people to one another has become difficult and rare. Yet, by its scarcity, the beauty and value of this exchange has only been enhanced.

How does being friends with your spouse before marriage, affect the after marriage relationship? Knowing one prior to getting married may give a hint of what they will be like afterwards. But marriage is always a gamble. It’s a totally new ball-game. For us, living together and sharing every moment has strengthened our love and increased our understanding to a degree that no level of friendship could have. Who is more dominant between the both of you? It depends on the issue. There are things that annoy both of us and we both make an effort to avoid them. Sometimes I get my way and sometimes she does. The most common thing you fight over? The remote control. How important do you think ‘monogamy’ is in a relationship? It’s paramount. Three people in a marriage is a disaster, not a relationship. One old Hindi song that describes your relationship? None, as such.

To hear a “Yes, I will” from a woman, a man must propose with...? Sincerity, love, commitment and a great ring! Which is more enjoyable: the getting to know each other (we are friends) phase, the after engagement phase or life after marriage? We enjoyed each other’s company in every phase, but nothing compares to being married. It’s the best experience of our lives and we love every moment of it. How important is ‘public affection’, in a marriage? PDAs? There is some general care and affection that should exist between a couple, but anything beyond that; get a room. The one place you would want all newly weds to check out? Alton Towers, London! A theme park, a water park and a resort! What else do you need? One celebrity couple, national or international, that you as a couple idolise? No one in particular.

It has been the political, economic and cultural center of China, for over 800 years from the Yuan Dynasty. The numerous royal buildings with long history endow Beijing with incomparable charm, not only the ‘Nation’s Best’ but also the ‘World’s Best’. It has 9,999 rooms with just a single room short of the number that ancient Chinese believe represents, ‘Divine Perfection’ and surrounded by a moat six meters deep and a ten-meter high wall. For five centuries, this palace functioned as the administrative center of the country. he newest addition to Lahore’s culinary arsenal seems to up the ante a bit with great food, service & some good old fashioned lounging. High Profile conducted their own review (read: raid) on Luciano’s at Ammar Belal and we found ourselves wanting more by the end of what seemed like quite an experience. Located on the bustling commercial avenue of Mahmood Kasuri Road, Luciano’s at Ammar Belal awes with not just its culinary offerings but a sensory environment that can’t help but put one’s mind at ease. Draped in accents of white and orange the restaurant, which is located on the first floor of the Ammar Belal store, takes its name from the infamous Charles ‘Lucky’ Luciano and is the second branch of a good dining chain in the making. Although the Italian name might throw you, the sumptuous Mediterranean cuisine its menu offers wont. Mouth watering ensembles on the menu include (and are in no way limited to) the Spinach Salad, which comes deceptively disguised with spicy skewered prawns and the Chicken Tarragon (a simple enough dish that seems to have escaped being mastered by most local establishments). If you feel

your appetite. Prepared as medium or medium-well, the meat virtually melts in your mouth as a burst of flavor invigorates the taste buds. It’s interesting to note that Luciano’s has been the first to introduce this densely marbled variation of beef which parallels the satisfaction one might derive from its Kobe beef counterpart. If you’re big on dessert, we highly recommend either Chocolate Molten Cake or the Crème Brule, or both! As Saleh Sheikh (one of the partners in the Luciano chain) explains the concept, a pretty straightforward picture of passions combined, paints the mental canvas. Saleh explains that the process behind operating and growing the chain involves a meticulous hands-on approach that includes constantly taking in customer feedback while still offering their unique take to food. “We take critique and customer complaints quite seriously and are always involved in the process of bettering our standards”, Saleh says. Looking around at the overwhelming draped white interior he chuckles about the hardest thing being the maintenance of the establishment. The interior, done up by the gifted Hamza Tarar over at Casa Hamza, boasts white drapery dividing public and private spaces in a non-intrusive manner. Couple with a retractable roof and starlit ceiling, the vista’s that open up while one is seated inside seem to never get old. The private lounge concept is one which some establishments have tried in the past but to no avail. Luciano’s however, seems to be hitting the mark perfectly taking in a blend that exudes a chic ‘Miami-esque’ aura of decadence, playfulness and allure. Amalgamating the various offerings at Luciano’s, including visually and gastronomically, the restaurant is ideal for those who enjoy a good meal on a rainy day or if you’d like to have a private dinner with a friend before jetting off on your weekend routine. We’ve already booked our table for the first rainy day that Lahore gets blessed with next; we suggest you do the same. With ambitious plans, a receptive attitude towards service, a reasonably priced menu and the guidance/consultation of BBC Celebrity Chef Conrad Gallagher, the chain’s latest addition seems to be making the right kind of waves in Lahore.

like splurging a bit, the Bresaola Carpaccio Salad with thinly sliced air-dried beef couple with a mouth-watering Wagyu gourmet burger will definitely do right by

Some Hope in Hell By Nuzhat saadia siddiqi, Publication manager, WWF - pakistan

D

At WWF, our mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment, and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world’s biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.

ejected by the devastating floods, the world’s indifference to the Pakistani people’s plight, the spiraling political fiascoes, the increasing violence and the chaos all around, a friend recently called me up and after a long rant about how we are going nowhere fast, she called this place a hell. I was shocked. But not nearly enough. Why? Because I am an eternal optimist. I try and seek positivity in everything. However, at that moment, I couldn’t bring myself to contradict her. I hung up. Got online. And with a new friend, Soufia Siddiqi (having the same last name helped us breeze through the awkward beginnings of a new second hand friendship!) we started the People’s Disaster Management (TPDMA) initiative, with focus on disaster management policies, working as a pressure group for the Government in the long run and being an able group of individuals who want to help Pakistan get back on her feet. I couldn’t just sit around and do nothing, because that’s all we have done so far, and look at the mess it has got us in to. I told my mother and my brother. They gave me their blessing. I emailed my uncle in England, and he responded immediately. Other family members also contacted me. My phupo also called me up. Then, I got support from my colleagues at WWF – Pakistan, especially my boss Hammad Naqi Khan and my colleague Zabreen Hasan. With all of this generous and quick support, I knew I was on the right track. After initial planning and setting up a

website for, TPDMA, I started working with my friend to identify an area that was least served by the aid that has been coming in. Our research directed us to Tangi area of Charsadda. So, my friend and I went to Islamabad and Charsadda with colleagues and a team of relief and aid workers working under the banner of ‘Pakistan Youth Alliance’ to assess the damage, the environmental impact of the floods and the condition the women and children are in, specifically. Now before anyone is alarmed, I must hasten to add that it was perfectly safe and hospitable. We were guided and escorted by army personnel and no untoward event happened.

Before the floods fade from everyone’s memory, here is a firsthand recollection of optimism in the face of disaster from an activitst. The people of the village were dignified and respectful, and accepted the aid in a uniform and respectable manner. There was a proper system in place to disperse the aid: heads of 150 families of the village were listed with their NIC numbers and were provided relief goods after they made a proper queue and showing their original NICs. In exceptional cases, where the male heads of the family were hurt or unable to make it to the secure area, women were given the aid for their family. Pakistan is a beautiful country and most of her people have a beautiful spirit. While the for-

eign media brands each and every one of us as barbaric savages who want to impose a bloody version of Islam on all, there are people who just want to pray, eat, be good to their neighbours and friends and work. That’s it. That’s all they want. Not every Pakhtun is a terrorist, not every Balochi is a separatist, not every Punjabi is a land-grabbing opportunist, and not every Sindhi is a needless agitator. Good and bad elements are everywhere - and they are separated in extraordinary times like these. While we can all pray and work towards restoring Pakistan, we can perhaps take comfort in the fact that perhaps these floods are not Allah’s ‘azaab’. They are a test of our fortitude and faith. They are a test of our resilience. And they are an opportunity for us to shrug off our differences, our myopia and our cynicism to aim for hope, and make change happen. Perhaps this is the time to start anew. As I write these lines, I am already getting ready to go to Alipur in Southern Punjab with Soufia. We ran a bit late to catch the 9PM Daewoo to Multan, and will now be leaving at 12AM. I have packed a life jacket (borrowed from the wonderful Pakistan Wetland’s Programme; thank you, Col. Wasim!) because I do not know how to swim. However, even the fear of deep water hasn’t crushed my spirit just yet. True to our character, I know Soufia and I will talk our way into exhaustion and then fall asleep on the bus with our plans of action in our hands. We will then step off that bus with a clearer objective in mind to lend our help in the field. We will come back with our insights and share them with Aftab, Junaid, Faizan, and Ali: all the friends who have volunteered their time, their resolve and their unlimited support to us. Things may be slow in the beginning, but as was proven by our trip to Charsadda, the phase for rebuilding and rehabilitation is going to run parallel to the relief efforts. We must not generalize. We must carry on. And we must carry on. As far as this being ‘hell’ is concerned, well I finally have an answer for my friend: what power would hell EVER have if we have hope for something better, and the heart to achieve it too? Allah has set the way out of every misery, every problem and every trial. We just have to take the first step. Thanks to a wobble in the earth’s axis, the astrological positions calculated some 2,000 years ago, no longer apply. Ancient Babylonians had 13 constellations, but only wanted 12, so they threw out the snake holder, Ophiuchus. Today Ophiuchus is re-introduced. If you look to your horoscope for a preview of your day, look again: you’re probably following somebody else’s supposed fate. According to the Minnesota Planetarium Society the real sign of the Zodiac should be as follows. Take a gulp and realise your personality just may take a turn!
