STYLING TIPS BY
BERNARD Sunglasses, can we live without them? Of course not!
Some people will drive out of their garages to a lunch and turn back after 5 minutes, just to collect their sunglasses from their
dressing table.
Yes, it is true! Without our sunglasses our style quotient is zero. We feel under dressed, under prepared and under sexy. Death by jumping in front of an X2 mini bus would be a lot more preferable than attending a chic afternoon party, without your shades.
What’s ‘in’, in 2011, and more importantly, what will suit you? We all know that the aviator style is still piping hot, especially the retro double-bridge aviator frames. These ‘in’ style aviator sunglasses are slick and functional and often borderless or semi-borderless. These will even make the lazy slob look as if he’s the man in action. Why? For the older people on the block, Tom Cruise wore them in top gun. For the newer generation, every young sexy European and American celeb has them on and these !’ glasses scream, ‘I am smoking

STYLE TIPS BY
ASMAA MUMTAZ @ THE DRESSER
HOW TO ‘ACTUALLY’ DRESS-UP! As the heat wave sets in and temperatures begin to soar, all one wants to do is strip down to the bare minimum, to keep from melting. Unfortunately, living in Pakistan, stripping down is not an option. Unless, of course, you want to be beheaded for indecent exposure or something. So we do what we can to survive, and this is how. There’s a reason every other person is popping out lawn and doing so well in the process. It’s the only thing you can wear to make the heat somewhat bearable! But what to do, when everybody and their mothers are wearing 52
similar prints? Do we just become one of the many, and lose our sense of individual style, altogether? In my book, that would be a reason to be beheaded! So fret not, go crazy, buy all the lawns you want. Get them stitched oversize so there’s lots of room to breathe (We all know how suffocating this heat can be), and accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!!! Here are my picks of the best out there, this year. If you cant get your hands on these particular pieces, take inspiration from them and trek to the lanes of liberty to find the gold in the stash of trash!

What time do you usually wake up? I have insomnia so can’t fall asleep till the wee hours of the morning and usually I wake up by 10 a.m, but at times when work is early I’m up by 7 a.m too... On holidays, which are very rare, I get out of bed whenever I’ve completed my 8 hours of sleep. What is your idea of a wholesome breakfast? I am a food lover and can never ever leave home without a full breakfast, which comprises of a two-egg omelette, toasts with butter and cheese, tea and sometimes fresh juice. Your day cannot start without? Three glasses of water, a full breakfast and a shower. What are the two things that you don’t leave home without? My cell-phone and house-keys. What makes you pass through a horrible day at work? The thought of my next meal and how to make it delicious or which movie to watch when I’m done. The thought of food especially the type that I love can instantly put me in a good mood!

How would you describe work on a busy day? Oh, my work is extremely hectic. I work 12 hours a day on an average but my busiest days have lasted 48 hours sometimes with nonstop shooting. A regular busy day would be shooting for one project in the day and then rushing to another shoot and working till 5 a.m for that. What do you enjoy most about your work? Meeting all sorts of different people and learning something from each one of them and also the traveling I get to do because of work! And the appreciation and love, from random people! It’s very overwhelming and touching sometimes. What’s your favorite time of the day? All mealtimes!! Especially dinner because I mostly try to eat at home when I get done from work! How different is a weekday from a weekend? Not much. There are no weekends for me. I work Sundays too, most of the time, and also till late on Saturday nights. But when I’m free on a Sunday, I hang out with my friends till dawn, sleep till the
afternoon and get up and go to the beach with family and friends or stay at home and clean the house and read the papers all day. What particularly defines a normal day for you? Work Work Work! Do you follow a routine or are you a whatever-comes-nextafter-this sort of person? The latter! How often do you meet up with friends during the day? Well, I hardy have time to meet up with friends during the day so I do so at night, sometimes! Are you a home person or a party person? Both! I have my phases! If you are done with work then usually you will… Go home, take off my makeup and shower, eat, and then watch mindless TV or a movie and try to sleep by reading a book... or hang out with my flat mates for a bit and then plan the next day! A must do before going to bed? Cleansing and putting off my cell-phone ringer!

commitment or a legal contract which is going to last forever? A vow with a best friend that you have the opportunity to grow old with and keep for life. Come what may! One thing about your partner which you have discovered after marriage? Bathroom habits! Candle light dinners or a time-out with friends, what attracts you more? Aamina: Candle light dinners! Mohib: Time out with friends! Basic gender trait difference! How often do you get your (C.I.A) mode on? (phone checking, internet access, etc...) Never. We don’t butt into each other’s things. Its a major turn off for both of us. The most irritating thing about your married life? People who don’t know jack about us nor are they related are more concerned about when we’re going to have babies! Best place in the world where you’d always want to go with your other half ? Anywhere, everywhere! We’re very entertaining and crazy travelling partners, for each other. The most common thing you both fight or argue over? Sleep timings! Aamina prefers an early to bed and early to rise routine. Whereas, Mohib is an insomniac! What makes a marriage stronger? Trust, friendship or space? Friendship & Trust. Is marriage a relationship b/w a girl and boy or b/w two families? Primarily, between a Girl & a Boy. What makes a good wife? One who spends less or the one who gives more space? Neither. A good friend along with being a good human being makes for a good wife...and vice versa!

ARJUMAND AMIN @ MAHNOUSH
TALKING ABOUT THE HEAT…
L
awns are indispensable clothing during the long, sultry summers in Pakistan – no wonder it’s become such a big industry and so many people go into the production of this hot-weather staple, ranging in price from a few hundred to thousands, and running the gamut from simple prints to designer lawns with everything but a sewing machine thrown in! So, the best reason to wear lawn is that summer weather demands light, loose clothing, but gone are the days when wearing a three-piece meant wearing three out-of-sync prints. I believe that the emphasis should be on the kameez and dupatta, homogenously mis-matched. I like plain pants, although I always have an embroidered pair in my collection. So, wear lawns – they are comfortable and uniquely Pakistani. But I think one must personalize one’s outfit, so that one doesn’t end up looking like a clone. Although, I provide embroideries on sheer organza, there are such beautiful braids out there that a little bit of imagination can bring originality to any outfit – as long as it’s not overdone! Personally, I don’t like the up-tothe ankles look for the day, but if you must, wear it with a churidar. I like the classic kurta, but also a long streamlined sleeveless shirt, or a halter for the evening. I love stylish flat sandals – nudes and tans go with everything, and of course the outfit can be dressed up for the evening with strappy heels. For the day, a stunning pair of shades is not just a fashion statement, but also a necessity during our summers. For Mahnoush, I do pale colours as well as hot ones. The only colours I don’t agree with for the summer are dull, insipid shades, or browns. Since the emphasis is on prints and embroidery, go for a minimal look – hair pulled up in a high pony or loose chignon, barely-there makeup and little jewellery.
