LETTER FROM THE
Editor M
argaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Our April issue of High Rise Life magazine is dedicated to philanthropy. There are so many worthy causes out there, so many needs vying for all our attention, and one of those causes we had the pleasure to attend, as Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada, held its annual Evening of Hope. Join us, as we share this magical night, one full of inspiration and hope, alongside Executive Director Melissa Cipriano, as we experience firsthand what it is like to help these children. Our cover story is dedicated, to world renowned sculptor Richard MacDonald, who is a leading advocate of the neo-figurative movement in the arts. Join me as I visit him at his studio at Veer Towers, where some of his most unique pieces have been created. MacDonald, who has received countless awards, including Lifetime Achievement Award, has devoted his life to creating passionate works of art collected by celebrities and heads of state. He has also, committed to inspiring future generations of artists, and is actively involved with numerous philanthropic pursuits enriching the future generation of artists. We are further, inspired by our pursuit of philanthropy as we shed light on the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, founded by Emmy award winning Hall of Fame boxing announcer, Rich Marotta with our insightful interview with its President Michelle Corrales-Lewis. As she enlightens us on the boxing community and how so many champions are forgotten in need of medical assistance. As per Marotta, “In boxing you’re only as good as your last fight.” It should come as no surprise that most doctors, nurses, and others who work in healthcare have a philanthropic streak. It is, after all, a profession that at its core is all about helping others. We were intrigued, when we heard of Dr. Kiarash Mirkia, philanthropic endeavors. Dr. Mirkia, who has won 2017 Top Surgeon Award, continues to help those in need one patient at a time. Perhaps, the greatest gift is that of giving. Enjoy, this issue and we hope your own experiences, coupled with stories of the people here today, will help inspire you to consider giving back and making a difference in our community. Thank you for your continued support. Best wishes,

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS... So we are into SPRING! How wonderful is that? In your tower home, what can you do to make that leap from winter to spring?
Let’s talk accessories! Look around your home, and out through those beautiful windows to our desert vistas…what comes to mind? Maybe, some clay pottery, sky blue pillows, rugs, artwork, and an interior waterfall to bring the signs of life inside. I actually change my interior environment seasonally, and that means such a fresh new look every three months. It is not as expensive as getting rid of your furniture selections, it just means putting new color on them to spruce them up. Wake up that sofa with splashes of sea colored pillows, and soft throws in loosely loomed weaves to promote that airy look. Art is such a huge element of your finished look. You can easily change that big piece over your sofa by adding spring colors. What a difference it can make to your space. Add some great tall palms and Philodendrons in colorful pots. Put those pots on rolling stands so you can rearrange them easily in your beautiful spaces. Paint an accent wall! Just one color added to a focal wall can be a dynamic change. You don’t have a huge investment in paint, for the colorful change it will add to your space. One of my customers prefers muted tones, so we did a sand color paint on her accent wall. Depending on the light coming in from her windows, the time of day, etc... her wall came alive with colors of lavender, taupe-gray. She can re-accessorize in the colors of each season and that wall will be like a giant chameleon, changing soft colors to work with her purchases. Now let’s look back at my comments in January…about using Feng Shui for the purpose of bringing peace and tranquility to your home. The changing of the seasons are perfect for the study of Feng Shui. Our personal space reflects or redirects our moods. If you have dark colors surrounding you when the spring light is shouting: Come out and play! You may find yourself not wanting to be at home because it is too dark. Changing just a few areas in your home to reflect this new, fresh time on the calendar, can have you falling in love with your stupendous tower abode all over again. So, as always, do your homework. Speak to a professional and get their perspective on what nuances can be changed without a huge expense factor. If you do find a piece of art that just says “Take me home, I’m yours!” and it is expensive, chalk that up as that piece of artwork has been trying to find you for a while. Art is an investment, as well as a statement in your home. Live it up. Look at design magazines showing you the spring-summer trends for this year. Are there elements you already have that can be tweaked to say spring update? I have a longtime customer who asks my advice on color for her properties constantly…does she have the eye to make those changes herself? Of course, but she relies on my advice because I’ve been working with her for…oh my gosh, over thirty years, and says when I pick a color it lasts her five or more years because of the timelessness tint or tone. She could pick out a soft peach color, but would never have thought of the bolder color of Cantaloupe instead. She also constantly throws new accessories in, that she finds and says the colors always jazz together what she has brought home.

On March 3, 2017, there was a line of traffic as I drove up to the Las Vegas Design Center at World Market. Cars were everywhere, in front and behind me. When it was finally my turn, the valet greeted me warmly, as I stepped outside of my car and handed him my keys. While I walked up to Building B, I admired many of the luxury vehicles parked along the side. Straight ahead, amid the dimly lit quad, was the oversized and brightly lit marquee letters that read one word: HOPE. I smiled as I watched a little girl fit between the letters and pose for her mother to take a picture

of “hope” surrounding her. Upon entering the building, the greeters happily checked me in. Afterwards, I was invited to walk the long red carpet leading to the elevators. A woman with a tray of champagne-filled flutes awaited my exit from the elevator onto the 16th floor. Just behind her were cheerful people lined up to take pictures with the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada’s, “Evening of Hope” backdrop on the smaller red carpet. Inside 300-400 dressed-to-impress people of all ages paraded throughout the floor. The feeling of happiness and charity was overwhelmingly
present. The view of the Las Vegas Valley was spectacular. The number of restaurants and food vendors displaying small plates of varied cuisines was astounding. The event was simply remarkable. Melissa Cipriano, Executive Director of Candlelighters, explains, “an Evening of Hope is a way of providing awareness and celebrating people who support our organization so that we can support our mission to our families, as well as celebrating our survivors.” When I was asked to write this article, I knew very little about the organization and didn’t know what to expect from attending this of their three annual events. However, the hopeful atmosphere impressed me to make a financial donation; listen to chefs and restaurant owners, as I ate the food they prepared, explain their reason for choosing to volunteer their time for this event; and was thoroughly entertained by the hosting of the live auction. “Our organization is the first and oldest childhood cancer organization in the state of Nevada. We have been priding ourselves on providing emotional support, quality of life programs, and financial assistance to all families who are affected by childhood cancer,” Cipriano noted. After attending the Evening of Hope 2017, I was equally impressed to learn how many unsung heroes there are supporting the organization that makes up an expansive community of supporters. Cipriano states, “There are so many families, people, medical professionals, corporations, and survivors that are supporting the children and their families.” Candlelighters serves approximately 125 families a month, and as many as 600 children throughout the year. To provide its programs and services, it takes countless hours from many volunteers, including the organization’s Board members. If paid, their help would have an estimated value worth millions of dollars in hourly wages. “Volunteers are the baseline for any nonprofit. Candlelighters is so grateful for [our] team of volunteers that embrace our mission and help to support the families,” identifies Cipriano. Candlelighters is fully funded by the charitable contributions made by the community, and corporation and private foundation grants. Notably, she highlights, “all [of the] money raised stays here to support the programs we provide. Every single dollar supports our local families or those being treated locally in Las Vegas.”
Melissa Cipriano & King Magana
Chartered in 1978, two families founded Candlelighters after both experienced having a child being treated for cancer. They created an organization where families could find strength, knowledge, and comfort by banding together during their most difficult times. According to Cipriano, “We will continue to be true to its mission in providing those three vital areas of support to families throughout their cancer journey.” Almost 40 years later, Candlelighters provides support and services for all cancer-diagnosed children or those who have survived living or APRIL 2017

being treated in Nevada, from birth to the age of 21. There are no other membership requirements and the services are 100 percent free to these families. Always looking for additional ways to support the families, Candlelighters just launched a scholarship program. This April, the organization will award $30,000 of scholarships to 10 in-college or college bound recipients. It also includes any child, that would like assistance with vocational school training, like trade or cosmetology schools. Cipriano gladly shares, “We are super excited about this program because every parent dreams of their kid going off to college or trade school or making a career. When your child goes through cancer, there’s no guarantee about tomorrow. The beauty of watching them work so hard and persevere to go off to college is phenomenal. It’s one of my favorite programs.” Until this community’s hope for a cure for cancer is fulfilled, Candlelighters will work alongside medical professionals and be here to provide the emotional and financial assistance needed by families in Nevada. Cipriano mentions, “At the quality of life programs, the support and love that [the families] have for one another is pretty powerful and wonderful.” During the event, I was blessed with the opportunity to witness this very fact. It is my hope that you will take a moment to learn more about the Candlelighters and their work by at least visiting their site at www.candlelightersnv.org and be compelled to call (702) 737-1919 and join the community of supporters in the fight against childhood cancer. Like Cipriano did at the end of our interview, I too will close with this poignant statement:
“
There are many of us and we are arm-in-arm providing these families with love and care. From the $10 monthly donor or the one-time contribution to the hundreds and thousands of dollars in grants and corporation support, everyone plays an important role in the organization because without them we could not do what we do for these special families.

In dance, there is intense dialogue between two spatial partners in perfect cohesion, at a moment creating a visual array of art in motion. In figurative art, the artist takes the virtual motion of the dancer thus, creating uniformity between life and art itself. World renowned figurative sculptor, Richard MacDonald, bronze rendered creations connect us to world where the dancers become a part of the sculptural concept. A lifelong passion of dance has led Richard MacDonald, to create a significant body of work inspired by dancers, performers, and athletes. His work pays tribute to the human form in its entirety. My goal is to make fine art, and fine art comes from the soul.If you have virtuosity and facility, you can take and create something of significance.I create for artistic intent only and do everything from life.
Born in Pasadena, California Richard MacDonald is a self-thought and classically trained artist at the prestigious Art Center, College of Design. He started his career as a successful commercial illustrator working for fortune 500 companies, until a fire destroyed his studio, along with the accumulated works of his career as a painter and illustrator.

I was tired of illustration. You'd work so hard on a commission and it would go in to a magazine, and you'd turn the page and it was gone.

Over the years, MacDonald’s work has been esteemed and collected by celebrities and heads of states including names such as: IBM, Hillary Clinton, Michael Jackson, Walt Disney, Sylvester Stallone, and Prince Faisal Al Saud. “There is a connection between me and the collectors, and as admirers of the work they tell me about the differences the pieces are able to make in their lives daily,” says MacDonald.

“
A sculpture will last a lot longer than a painting.I'm also interested in creating a legacy for collectors because bronze will last for thousands of years so I'm not really selling the art to this particular collector, but it is being passed on.

MacDonald, began sculpting and within ten years became one of the most collected present-day figurative sculptors in America. He often works on 30-40 pieces at a time at his studios with multiple models coming and going, through the course of the day. MacDonald, who is visually gifted often spends two to four hours with his subject and refuses to use photographs. He prefers to draw his subjects, and eighty percent of his work is driven by memory and his profound understanding of human anatomy. His studio at Veer Towers, has been centerstage for some of his greatest works. One of the reasons he chose Veer Towers, was for its 13-foot ceilings giving MacDonald the opportunity to work on a larger scale. Using tools mostly made by MacDonald himself, he starts with small sketches and builds a maquette, which is refined and enlarged and a mold is used to create editions in bronze, through the “lost wax” technique. Each sculpture takes years to complete as they evolve in size from wax to monumental bronze masterpieces. Per MacDonald
Foundation to name a few. He has teamed up with boxing legend, Mohammed Ali at “Celebrity Fight Night,” where he donated one of his master works “Doves, Third Life” which raised over $110,000 for Parkinson’s research.
“
Charity work is very important to me and gives me an opportunity to give back to my community.I've always been a big supporter of many different charities, have donated millions of dollars to them, and it just feels great to do and can help others, especially children.

MacDonald is not a fan of commissioned work and prefers to work without conditions. Although, he has commissioned and brought to life many iconic pieces like Flair, created for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, sitting at over 26-feet, a massive sculpture of a gymnast in motion, highlighting the heroic willpower of Olympians to succeed. MacDonald has also, created 15-foot monument for the 100th U.S. Open in 2000, in celebration of the new Millennium to commemorate its Golf Championship, at Pebble Beach. Currently, he is working on The Grand Coda, a memorial to Dame Ninette de Valois, founder of The Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet School. At its completion, the monument will be installed at Richmond Park in London. Committing his life to the world of arts, Macdonald is avidly involved with numerous philanthropic pursuits. Especially, in inspiring future generation of artists. He actively seeks development of arts through mentoring programs, and art education in schools and universities. He also, supports charitable organizations, that benefit children causes throughout the United States such as Boys and Girls Club, Make a Wish Foundation, Child Help USA, The Junior League, and One Drop

In recent years, MacDonald has taken on an exciting new direction with his Red Exhibition as depicted on our cover of, Yin and Yang bronze sculpture. The ancient symbol of Yin and Yang, represents the union of opposites, thus creating a harmony of opposition between male and female. Red is a solo exhibition with 68 pieces, that explores the role color plays in figurative sculpture. MacDonald believes that, “The color [Red] is really the strongest human color, it’s who we are…every time we see red it’s a whole different stimulus than any other color.” The Red Exhibition, can be seen here in Las Vegas at his Gallery at the Bellagio, it will also be presented in coming months in exhibitions in Asia and for the Royal family in Dubai.

In fact, MacDonald’s collaboration with Cirque du Soleil performers initially, began with his admiration of charity work. After, working with the organization to help benefit Free Arts for Abused Children, a wonderful new genre and partnership was born captivating both the audience and Guy Laliberte, the creator of Cirque du Soleil. Today you can see, a vivid array of Cirque du Soleil performers come to life through his sculptures at Richard MacDonald’s art galleries. “Cirque is a worldwide phenomenon and they are just incredible athletes,” says MacDonald.
Richard MacDonald continues to impress his audience with perfection, precision and sculpts the way for new generation of artists. From his mentorship programs to his charitable contributions, he has enlightened our hearts and our appreciation of the arts. His work is timeless and brings life to the complexity and beauty of human form. A true visionary of his time and the neo-figurative movement.
“
Art is an engagement with human beings. The dynamic emotive quality of art makes my work different, there are very few people who do what I do.

2017 TOP SURGEON!
He’s been selected by his patients for a reason. He has the miracle hands of Davinci! You think it’s too much? What if I asked the 26-year-old young mother, that got in a car accident in Springfield, IL, and broke her neck and injured aorta? What If I asked the 15-year-old girl, that came in with a bullet in her chest and who was declared dead when she was brought in? What if I asked the patient, that was rushed in with undetectable blood pressure, multiple injuries, and damages to main blood vessels after an explosion and was on the edge between life and death? If I asked the people that were supposed to be dead.... They would agree with me! All these people have a new birthday now. The day when they were saved... Modern technology, infrastructure, and the skills of Dr. Kiarash Mirkia, with the help of the hands of Da Vinci allow patients to get a second chance in life. He helps his clients with minimally invasive procedures, his wisdom, and his expertise. Before, the same patients would have to stay in hospital for weeks and months, but not anymore. Medical doctor, surgeon, trauma specialist, clinical researcher, speaker, and publisher of multiple medical articles, Dr. Mirkia is licensed in Nevada, Arizona, Illinois, New York, Montana, and Wisconsin. He’s gracefully received many
awards for his phenomenal work. This surgical genius travels to the third world to perform surgeries & provide medical care for those in need. The admiration for his medical missions continually increases, and you’ll agree after you hear the incredible stories that changed have patients’ lives! He continues to be a strong figure in our community and gives back in countless ways. 20-35% of his patients he helps through his pro bono care, he does this for those that do not have insurance for surgeries. As a member of The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, NV and Springfield, IL he continues his philanthropic endeavors for those in need. Dr. Mirkia completes the most complicated surgeries, and handles cases of cancer patients or patients with serious infections. He not only saves lives, but makes sure patients look their best. He has been in Las Vegas since 2008, where he relocated to Las Vegas from Chicago. He’s a Master of Robotic Da Vinci Surgery, invented by Intuitive Surgery corporation. This machine can be operated remotely over the internet and allows the surgeon to operate over a council, while robotic arms perform the surgery. You could be sitting in Las Vegas and be operating on a patient on the other side of the world! Modern technology is truly miraculous.
Kardashian made this procedure famous as it is commonly known as the Vampire’s Face Lift. Everyone over 30 can benefit from PRP and should have an individual consultation with Dr. Mirkia. As for Botox, he thinks that anyone over 20 could have it, because some wrinkles are harder to flatten out with Botox if you are in your 40s, than if you started at 23. Everyone today knows, that traditional liposuction is a lot of work for a surgeon. They traumatize the fat, which is then suctioned out. Thus, the patient is left with a lot of bruising, pain, and discomfort. At Maya Medical Spa, you don’t have to go through this anymore. A Smart Lipo with a laser fiber is inserted and then the fat is melted, to completely liquefy it, then the laser tightens the skin, where the fat is then suctioned out. The results are tremendous and with this technique, there is less discomfort, less bruising and less pain! It used to be called a “Lunchtime Lipo,” and it is a great tool to get rid of fat in your neck, waist, back, arms, thighs, or anywhere else you might need! The best part is that you’ll have the Da Vinci Hands of Dr. Mirkia, working with you to create even more of a Masterpiece out of you. Let your beauty be even more vibrant. WWW.MAYAMEDICALSPALV.COM

SINCE THE LATE 1950’S, Las Vegas has remained the undisputed boxing capital of the world. Like many of the sport’s champions, the state of Nevada has resiliently held onto its title by, “highlighting some of the greatest bouts of all time since, the Jack Johnson days and has brought billions of dollars to the State of Nevada; primarily the city of Las Vegas,” mentions the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame President Michelle Corrales-Lewis. This is a core reason the NVBHOF is anchored in Vegas. The registered 501(c)3 nonprofit was founded in late 2012 by four time Emmy award winning Hall of Fame boxing announcer, Rich Marotta. In October 2016, the NVBHOF appointed the widow of former two-division boxing champion Diego “Chico” Corrales as the President to execute its mission. During our interview over lunch at TC’s Rib Crib, she articulates its mission: “to protect the history of boxing in Nevada, support champions of the present, assist the amateurs/youth of today, and preserve the history of yesterday.” In practice, Corrales-Lewis spends her days visiting local boxing gyms, in-need boxing professionals and their families, attending any boxing related programs or causes, while running the organization and planning its events. “We try to bless as many people as we can, as well as support others missions,” says
Corrales-Lewis. “Yet, there are a lot of families and programs we aren’t able to reach because our funds are stretched thin.” This year, NVBHOF desires to implement fundraising programs to raise additional financial support needed to help the boxing community. Corrales-Lewis explains, “We don’t get the support people think. People think every boxer is paid [well] and promoter or big fighter is donating to the cause, but they are not. In boxing, you’re only as good as your last fight. Afterwards, these boxers are forgotten about. There are so many champions in need of medical assistance or even a place to stay, but because of their celebrity status, people look at the champ and don’t recognize he’s having a hard time. In reality, he may not have anything to eat.” Boxing is the only major league nonunion sports organization. Their athletes are not protected from the wiles of celebrity. To raise funds and increase awareness, the NVBHOF hosts events, including but not limited to: Fight Night with a Champ, cocktail parties, and tickets are now available for their upcoming Annual Gala which be held on August 12th, 2017 at Caesar’s Palace. Additionally, Corrales-Lewis would like to create opportunities to assist members of the boxing community like revenue sharing through retail sales. Corrales-Lewis signifies as the purpose behind
Boxing is a family and to sustain a healthy relationship with its members, whether professional or amateur boxers, announcers, cut-men,referee, promoters,and/or family members,it’s important for the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame to be in Las Vegas and have a home for the family and fans to visit and call their own.
”
the NVBHOF seeking a permanent Vegas location for a boxing museum. “In addition to providing classes expanded on the commission’s offerings, the location would give fight-fans somewhere to visit, locally outside of an event and a reason to come back,” describes Corrales-Lewis. Let’s help NVBHOF give our champions a home in their capital city. (702) 368-2463 www.nvbhof.com nvbhof

BRAD ' s GARRETT' LOVE FOR MANKIND Written by Yelena Brezhneva A vibrant and shimmering jewel in the desert, Las Vegas city is a Mecca of entertainment. Drawing in everyday more talented, visionary, and creative individuals. Truly, transforming to a center of high-tech culture, fashion and luxury living. Celine Dion, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graft, Wayne Newton, Mariah Cary, Jenifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Chris Brown, TI, Criss Angel, Nicolas Cage and Brad Garrett are just few to call Las Vegas home. We all have seen TV show, “Everybody Loves Raymond.” For me it was the first time I met Brad Garrett as Robert, Raymond’s brother. For years, we all laughed and cried together with these heartwarming characters. Meeting him in person, for the first time created an unforgettable impression. His dominating 6’8’’ giant presence is full of so much love and care! Garrett, has a heart full of compassion and understanding for human plight. He understands, what a painful journey parents go through, when they must stop working to care for their little one’s needs, when they are battling unthinkable, unimaginable horrors of life taking diseases. He knows, that with emotional hardship, immediately financial hardship follows. With no means to pay for food, water, power, gas, and home... Brad Garrett, takes care not only of his family and children, but also of others.
“ ”
The word philanthropy has its roots in the Greek language meaning-love for mankind. Garrett’s love for family and children led him to launch Maximum Hope Foundation, in 2000. Named after his children Max & Hope, it is a non-profit organization, that offers practical help to families with children battling life-limiting illness. “The trouble is, you think you have time.” Buddha These kids do not have time! Maximum Hope Foundation, is inviting you to join them, in supporting the most important things: LIFE & FAMILY. Struggling parents, that are facing their darkest hours of their life, will gratefully appreciate your help. Create your good karma today. Don't wait!
