D-ZYN CORNER
Written by Carol Townsend, A.S.I.D. Interior Designer
JOY! Peace! Celebrate! ‘Tis the season to celebrate your year, and give the gifts of love. You have spent a year in your fabulous high-rise home. What did you say you wanted for that very special spot in your home… to dress it up just that much more? Now is the time to get it. Put a bow on it and call it your holiday gift to you! My mom used to go to the special sales at the furniture store in November, and buy a room of furniture as a family gift. It would be delivered on a cold, snowy December morning, and we would all relish its arrival. You and I may not have those cold, snowy mornings where we live, but you can still buy a special gift for the holidays. Then it’s time to think holiday decorating. First pour over the current magazines suggesting what your special tree should look
14
like. Does anything stand out to you? Which look is you? Which look will spotlight your special place in a most special way? Do you have any earrings that you have only one of because the other has disappeared? Jewelry can make fabulous one of a kind ornaments. Put a small ribbon on the remaining bauble and hang it on your tree. Do you love birds? I recently saw a big fat, colorful woodpecker at my sister’s home in Montana, and thought “Oh, what a great ornament he would make!” There are fabulous bird ornaments in many colors that could make your holiday tree simply yours. Christmas is that perfect time for your unique collection to show off. Dress up your table and let the crystal shine! I love making special table cloths out of glittering fabrics and nestling my Christmas dishes there. www.HighRiseLife.com
StageThis Interior Design On my way home from Montana the other day my husband said, “Look at those trees, now that is what I call flocking.” You can have a small tree in your dining room, on the sideboard, think about that. You have a wide- open palette to work with. Find the spot for that beautiful tree or trees and let’s do this! I have trees in my living area, but also a tree in the master bedroom. That way if I have our traditional ornaments on display for our friends to enjoy, I can have another beautiful special tree just for me to enjoy in our bedroom. Pile wonderful cozy throws and pillows in the holiday theme around your living room and see the delighted faces of friends who cuddle up to enjoy your holiday party. We may not need
December/January 2017-18
them for warmth, but those great faux fur throws look so inviting, thrown over the back of a chair or sofa. What better way to start the holidays by sharing the joy of giving at your event? Think of your friends and their wonderful personalities, then go find that perfect gift for them. Share the joy of your new home with family and friends. Listen to their comments about what they love about your new space, so you can formulate your design plans for 2018! LOVE the season, Share the JOY and enjoy your friends for that lifetime of love you have built with them. Happiest of Holidays to everyone!

MILITARE CHRONO VINTAGE To celebrate its twenty years of existence, ANONIMO presents this fall a chronograph version of its Vintage model. On this anniversary, the brand publishes a model that comes in two versions. An elegance worthy of Italy, its country of origin and which will delight connoisseurs and collectors alike. With a more incisive dial treatment, one of these new MILITARE Vintage chronographs comes in a version commonly called “Panda,” due to its eggshell back and associated with black counters, reminding of the iconic animal. The contrast can be reversed with the second model, “Newman.” For greater readability, the small seconds counter only marks the tens. Very graphic, these Vintage models are mounted on a bracelet of aged leather, and give off a refined style, which goes straight to the point. Price: $3,890 www.anonimo.com

Parsa Research Inc. Signs Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra CEO SheaArender to a product ambassador agreement Parsa Research Inc. has signed CEO of the Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra, Shea Arender, as a national product ambassador for Parsa Men’s Skincare. Parsa Research specializes in men’s health and wellness. Their innovative research has taken them to eight different countries to find the most natural ingredients. “Everyone’s skin is different, especially men. We have created a universal formula that’s all-natural and all plant-based but also provides overall skin health and anti-aging without harmful and harsh chemicals,” said Parsa CEO Bamdad Bani. “I love the Parsa Men’s Skincare line and had been using it for over a year when they reached out to me. I was honored to tell them my testimony of how great the product was and the difference I noticed on my skin,” said Shea Arender. Shea joins a discreet list of Hollywood and music celebrities who have been tapped to endorse beauty products, including Mick Jagger, John Mayer, Zac Efron and Ed Sheeran. The commercial shoot will take place in Las Vegas at the Parsa headquarters.
“To me, this is one of the most unique products I’ve ever tried, because it contains a cleanser, shave cream, and has moisturizer in it, even after you shave and wash the product off, you still feel the moisture on your face,” says Shea Arender. An anti-aging moisturizer serum will be in the package as well. Most serums have mass produced chemicals in them while Parsa Men’s is free from all of that and is all natural plant based (vegan). The serum is to be followed right after the 3 in 1 Clean, Shave & Refresh. The hair gel is paraben free, safe on color treated hair, and doesn’t flake or dry out. “It’s designed to work on so many different hair types, and on so many different levels,” says Bamdad Bani. You can use it on wet, damp, or dry hair. It’s made in the USA and has no animal testing. Parsa Research Inc. is in the process of innovating the future of men’s skincare, including the limited edition Shea Arender signature collection. With a proven record of accomplishment over the years in research on men’s skincare, Parsa Research Inc. has offices in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Shea Arender’s signature collection will contain a series of special edition signature products in a specially marked package. Inside, you will find a 3 in 1 Clean, Shave & Refresh.

Jewel’s inspiration has done so much for children and troubled youth through books, educational programs, mentorship, charity concerts, performances, and philanthropy. She has teamed up with Inspiring Children Foundation (www.inspiringchildren.net) and has been sharing her tools transforming children from surviving to thriving in a loving non-profit way alongside her Jewel Never Broken Program. Her collaboration with Ryan Wolfington, the founder of the “Inspiring Children’s Foundation” has been a wonderful team effort. Jewel shares her insights, her experience and her wisdom with readers of High Rise Life Magazine in our exclusive interview. Her quest of self-discovery and solving her own problems has become a road map for success for others. There’s so much knowledge and wisdom in her words. Q: What is your definition of happiness? Happiness is when you are at peace with who you are and the choices you make, when your actions are in line with your values and ideals. Happiness is not something that comes from other people, places, or things. It comes from
32
within, by making right choices. Every day I earn my happiness. I am willing to be the one who is accountable and take responsibility for my own happiness and the shape of my own life. For a long time, I lost myself, and when I had my son I really had to do a gut check, and I realized who I was wasn’t who I wanted my son to know. Now, I’m becoming someone I want my son to grow up knowing. Q: You had a tremendous hardship as a child. What helped you to beat all odds and become successful? At times, I was just on survive mode, when I was homeless and living out of my car. Most people think that period was because I was pursuing my music career, but that’s not quite true. My boss propositioned me, and when I turned him down, he fired me. So, I lived out of my car for a couple of months, but then my car got stolen. I got sick, I had panic attacks, I almost died of blood poisoning. That’s when I started stealing a lot. I worked hard. I was always working, always had a job, always found a way to get through— I had grit. One day, I saw a reflection of myself in a mirror while I was shoplifting a dress, and knew that I had become a statistic. At that point, I decided to turn my life around. I created these mindfulness exercises, long before that was a commonly used word. I meditated, journaled, and started to live mindfully, by observing my hands. That is what my song “Hands” is about. I was writing about that very dark time in my life and the lessons I needed to learn. As a child I credit nature for keeping my love alive. No matter how abusive my home life was, I always had the trees, mountains, and grass to bring me back home, to my true self.

Photo by Kurt Markus Q: What does being successful mean to you? In the end, I always wanted my greatest work of art to be my life, not my music. Music was just one of the many ways I sought happiness and tried to share it with others. Being successful means being a happy, whole human. Success is finding the courage to be true to myself, and holding on to a sense of humor along the way while refining my craft. Working the land in Alaska, then fighting to survive as a teenager on my own, gave me so many skills I would later use to be a successful entrepreneur, musician, and human. Q: How did you manage to change your insecurity as a child? My mom left when I was 8, my dad was an abusive alcoholic, and I was an insecure child. The truth is that no one can keep you captive. No one can keep you unhappy. No one can keep you abused. Our lives rise to the level we accept. I do believe we can rise from the screaming blood of our losses, of extreme pain, physically debilitating emotion, psychological neglect, apathy, and not merely survive, but thrive. We do not need to let our histories, or our losses define us except in the way we choose. We can use them as fuel to create real depth, beauty, connectedness, and compassion in our lives. Our stories can make us exceptional people, not damaged ones. If we choose to be truthful with ourselves. And if we choose to digest and release the pain rather than try to avoid it. This is how pain accumulates and creates more pain, leading to neurosis, pathology, and brittleness of spirit.

Photo by Matthew Rolston Q: What do you think is the most important character trait a woman should have?
Q: Do you feel that you’ve achieved all your goals?
Growing up on a homestead, I was not brought up looking at a person and identifying that person as a man or a woman. We are all just people. As a person, I think the most important character trait to have is to be curious, being curious and kind and observant of you. Take time to dig deeply into your own nature—even the parts that make you uncomfortable. Many women are bestowed with a sensitive and intuitive nature that is so special and we add our own special touch. Men too have their own special qualities that I admire.
My primary goal is to master my own happiness, and to pass this along to my son, and to others. I’m very inspired to create the best environment possible for him to grow and develop. I can say with confidence that I am happy, which is saying a lot considering my background. But I am nowhere near finished. There is much for me to do in this life, improving myself and the world around me.
Q: Do you feel that you fulfilled yourself as a woman?
My whole goal is to keep my spirit intact. If that doesn’t happen, none of this is worth it. I want to pivot my career, which I have already started doing.
Yes. I’m so lucky to have been raised by pioneer women in Alaska that did not identify as a particular sex or see any limitations. We hunted, gardened, built homes and cut wood. At the same time, I love being feminine and expressing all aspects of myself. I’ve been lucky enough through my career, as a daughter, mother, entrepreneur, and friend, to express myself as a woman, as a human, in so many unique ways. I’m an artist, a painter, a poet, a writer, a musician, a lover of wisdom and education. Being a mother and a happy human is my most cherished occupation and calling. I couldn’t be happier with all the ways in which this life has allowed me to express myself.
Q: What are some things you would like to do in the next few years?
I have some exciting entrepreneurial goals, building a collaboration with Tony Hsieh and Zappos, to help companies with the next frontier of corporate culture, helping them to invest more deeply in their human capital by helping their executives to be whole humans. To do this I am using the same emotional intelligence and mindfulness tools that helped me go from surviving to thriving. I have some interesting ideas for my music career, and for the music business in general.

Photo by Matthew Rolston My Never Broken Foundation has partnered with the Inspiring Children Foundation, and we hope to revolutionize youth development, to help children get the type of education I wish I had when I was young. The website (jewelneverbroken.com) is a nonprofit and free to the world. It’s an emotional fitness destination, where people can access simple mindfulness tools to create change in their lives. I’ve paired with school districts to hopefully share our mindfulness curriculum with hundreds of thousands of students. I have always loved the pursuit of wisdom and sharing it with others. My first soundtrack for this passion was my music, then my poetry and writing. It’s exciting to now express this in new and creative ways. Q: What do you think is your life purpose? My life’s passion is the pursuit of wisdom and sharing it with others. I discovered this at a young age, growing up in nature, on our homestead in Alaska. My father says that while our family tradition has included a lot of pain and trauma, it also provided the remedy. Nature, if you let it, is a remarkable cure and inspiration for many things. Q: What would be your message to young women today? You are capable, strong and no matter what has or ever will happen to you, you are never broken. Stay true to yourself, speak up and do not be afraid to trust in
December/January 2017-18
Photo by Philip Macias Q: Do you have an idol? Nature. Photo by Philip Macias
Q: If you didn’t have to work, what would you do?
your inner compass. It will lead you in the right direction. Also, meditation and mindfulness are a powerful hack that will help you find everything you are looking for.
I would do exactly what I am doing. Seek wisdom, and create ways to share it.
Q: Who was your inspiration growing up?
Snuggling with my son and helping him grow into a happy whole human, Journaling, yoga, meditation, painting, and riding a motorcycle.
My aunt Mossie was a big inspiration. My grandmother as well. They were both strong Alaskan woman, that always made it through the winter to find spring and summer. I also loved Greek mythology, great artists like Joni Mitchell and Ella Fitzgerald, and writers like Tolstoy. Q: Who was your inspiration in music? Bob Dylan and Neil Young really took me under their wings, which is very humbling. When my first record was flopping, and the record label wanted me back in the studio Neil told me to stay true to myself and then Bob took me on the road and mentored me.
Q: What is your favorite pastime or hobby?
Q: What are some of your daily rituals? I am a geek when it comes to self-care and health. I take a ridiculous number of vitamins every day, but most importantly, like I brush my teeth, I brush my soul. I meditate daily or take brain breaks as I like to call it, throughout my day. I love spending time with my son, journaling and talking to some of the wisest friends a woman could have.
35
Q: How long have you been working with Inspiring Children Foundation? I’ve known Ryan Wolfington and have been collaborating with him for almost three years now. The work we do together in the Foundation we both have been doing our whole lives. Personal and human development is our passion and our Jewel Never Broken program is a culmination that came from that. The Foundation has been doing this work for fifteen years and my involvement started soon after meeting Ryan. Q: Is there a specific reason you chose to be a part of Inspiring Children Foundation? I have been all over the world and I have never seen a program more effective, which is why I chose them. It is revolutionary. Specifically, I love that each child can earn their way, to learn by doing and to become emotionally intelligent. I’ve spent a lot of time with these children and I have seen how aware, kind, and strong they are. It is remarkable. I moved to Vegas with my son for two months over summer mostly because I wanted him to be around the kids in the Foundation. As a result, I now have land and will have a house at Lake Las Vegas soon, so my son and I can be more involved. Q: Are you happy with the results Inspiring Children Foundation has achieved so far? We have a 100% success rate of getting kids scholarships to colleges like Yale, Stanford, Harvard, Air Force, Princeton, and Georgetown. More importantly, we are arming children with a psychology for life, so they can be happy and create generational change. The Fuller Graduate School of Psychology is studying the program because it is so successful, and it is being duplicated in twenty-two cities. Q: Do you have an update on your partnership with Zappos? Tony Hsieh is a visionary. His self-management system is revolutionary, and I am extremely honored to collaborate with him on what we consider to be the next frontier of corporate culture. We ae hoping to have the project up and running in 2018. Q: You are a deeply intuitive person. Were you always like that or did that come later in life? I’ve been doing mindfulness practices since I was fourteen years old. I have gone in and out, but following my intuition is always something I have worked to cultivate within myself. That’s why I wrote a song about it in the 90’s. Q: How does it feel to be such a positive influence for young women? I have always been authentic and real with my fans. I never wanted to be put on this pedestal that most celebrities are put on. They know I’m not perfect.
36
We use each other to bring each other up when we have issues. One of my fan’s husband died and she really wasn’t handling it well. Their whole lives revolved around one another. My fans found out about it and without my prompting at all set up a schedule and each week a different person flew to stay with her, cook her meals and be with her. It was beautiful.

Holiday’s Glow Written by Jennifer Gonzales
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, the weather is nice and cold, and the smell of pine trees are everywhere. It’s the perfect excuse to get away from work and spend time with the people you care about most, even the ones that you haven’t seen in a while. Everybody is running around doing last minute preparations for this year’s get together. You finally found the perfect dress, and the accessories to go with it, but what about the perfect look? Don’t you want to flaunt your face the right way, and feel like the most beautiful woman at the party?

The Golden Eye If all that glitters, is gold, it still wouldn’t compare to all the attention that will be set on your eyes this holiday season. Golden eyeshadows are what’s trending right now, and looks great on all skin tones. It’s such a fascinating color that can be worn any time of the year and with any outfit. This eyeshadow is available in a matte, gel, airbrush, and powder. It’s easy to apply and can be bought almost anywhere. Feeling festive? Add a cat eyeliner wing to your shimmering gold smoky eyes and it will have you feeling glamourous. Ex: Tom Ford Color Quad Golden Mink, Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Convoitise, Gucci Shadow Oro Illuminate the Night The most brilliant thing that has been invented that every woman should own is an illuminator. Illuminator’s have become a must have item in everyone’s make-up bag. December/January 2017-18
Choosing the right illuminator is fun and easy, but what’s more important is how to apply it. If you want a gorgeous glow you must apply the illuminator to the areas of the face that stand out the most when in indirect sunlight. Best areas of interests should be your brow bone, which defines your arch, cheekbones which enhances sharpness, bridge of the nose, and cupid’s arrow (double curve in the upper lip). When applied correctly, it makes the skin look smoother, softer, and refreshed. Now, who wouldn’t want a little radiance in their life? For a more glowing look, try a shimmering skin perfector. Ex: YSL Touche Eclat Lumiere Divine Highlighting Powder, Tom Ford Illuminating Powder, Becca shimmering skin perfector. The Perfect Shade It doesn’t matter if you are going natural for the day or getting ready for a big night, applying the right shade of lipstick, completes
any look. I know how sometimes finding the right shade can be difficult, you don’t want to wear something that’s too dark or wear something that’s too bright. Sometimes, we see others wearing a certain color that looks great on them, but looks different on you. The reason behind this is because everyone’s skin tone is different, once you know what skin type you are then it can be easily suggested which shade is right for you. For an example, if you have fair skin, then true reds, reds with pink undertone, and magenta will suit you best. If you have medium/olive skin, pink, cranberry, reds, and almost all nudes will stand out the most. If you have dark skin, burgundy, brown, dark beige, and orange tone reds will best compliment you. Written by Merilee Kern 1. Map out specific goals & timeframes. You
are far more likely to achieve your diet resolution if you spend a few minutes thinking it through. Sit down at your desk and dedicate even just ten minutes of your life to strategizing your resolution. Put pen to paper or, better yet, send an email to a friend or family member and make a list of the things you’re going to do to change your weight. Simply stating that “I’m going to lose weight” is not nearly specific enough, but it makes a good headline at the top. Write down a date when you will achieve your first goal. This date should be in the near future--one month is a good bet. Now, make a specific, realistic goal. Most experts agree that you’re most likely to succeed if you don’t starve yourself, and plan to lose one to two pounds per week. In fact, setting a modest goal -say, one pound per week -- can spare you a lot of hunger and stress. You might even forget you’re on a diet! Suppose you choose 1.5 pounds per week and a one-month goal date: your goal will be about six pounds. Piece of cake (so to speak)! Put your goal and goal date on your calendar (e.g., “Weigh 150 pounds” as an entry for January 30). Go back to your piece of paper, or email. Under your goal and goal date, write down the word “food.” Ask yourself: what exactly is your eating plan? Are you going to follow a particular diet? If so, when are you going to start? Your answer should be “right now.” Don’t be afraid. This is going to be great! If your diet requires that you purchase something or register on a certain website, go do that right now! What about exercise? What specific days and times will you commit to exercising? Who will you exercise with? If possible, call a friend now and set something up.
44
www.HighRiseLife.com
Review your resolution plan frequently as you work your way toward your goal. When your goal date comes, call a friend to either brag about your achievement or confess that you didn’t achieve it and tell them what’s going to be different for the next goal date. Now, sit down again (pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard) and set a new goal date and goal. Keep going!
2. Set up financial incentives. After you’ve written out your specific goals and dates, your best bet is to build a little structure into them. Enter: prizes and rewards. A significant amount of academic research shows that you are much more likely to achieve your resolution if you include a double financial incentive -- i.e., money to lose if you fail and money to win if you succeed! The reason money works better than the natural motivators of vanity and health is that money can be tied to specific, measurable goals and deadlines. In other words, financial incentives help prevent procrastination by establishing a firm start date, and help prevent quitting by establishing a firm goal date. Financial incentives also make weight loss a lot more fun and exciting by transforming the process into a game. There are highly effective, proven tools and resources available online for setting up financial incentives. For example, HealthyWage.com allows participants to make various kinds of personal weight loss “bets” and win payouts up to $10,000. The double financial incentive is an incredible motivator and source of structure that most winners say is indispensable.
Try writing a blog about your progress. Not only will your readers help keep you seriously accountable, but you may discover that being a great teacher is one of the best ways to learn and improve your own success.
5. Seek fellowship. When you tell people about your
diet resolution, be on the look-out for a dieting partner (or group of partners). When you work on your diet resolution with a friend or group of friends or family members, you are even more likely to accomplish your goals. You get all the benefits of accountability plus the comfort and fun of knowing there’s someone waiting for you to exercise, compare food and restaurant experiences, and share the difficulties of dieting. According to the American Psychiatric Association, “Enlisting family and friends in the effort may help.” One study shows that participants who do a weight loss program with friends are more than twice as likely to keep their weight off than those that try to do it on their own.

3. Do one thing at a time. Trying to stick to more
than one resolution creates a willpower diffusion that is almost always a recipe for failure. Your weight loss resolution requires time, planning and lots of action items. The winding road from plump to sexy is made of many cobblestones that you have to lay down one at a time with lots of small, frequent decisions (e.g., “this morning, I am going to skip that second donut”). With all the good judgment and will power those little decisions require, you simply won’t have the time and energy for your other resolutions, too. You’re booked solid! If you think your weight loss resolution isn’t that big of a deal, you might be off track.
4. Tell everyone. Or, at least tell a few friends or family
members about your endeavor. If you’re not willing to tell someone about your diet resolution, you might not be committed enough to succeed. When you tell other people about your plans, a magical thing happens. You know that your supporters are waiting to hear news of your success, and you don’t want to let them down. Some researchers believe that the social element is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal. Plus, it’s important to have support -- i.e., people to brag to when you succeed; people to talk to when you feel like overeating. Talking is a great antidote to a desire to binge or eat things that could get in the way of your success. If you’re really determined to achieve your resolution, you should consider taking the social element even farther.

Off the Beaten Path Lake Havasu - The Lake the City Written by Francesca Maria
I lived in Lake Havasu City Arizona off and on totaling about 11 years of my adult life. There is an old saying in Lake Havasu that says, “You can check out, but you can never leave,” Taken from the famous Eagles song “Hotel California” and I agree that it is one hundred percent true. Once you get a taste of Lake Havasu, you will always find your way back again. Lake Havasu City is in western Arizona and the lake is fed by the Colorado River which divides Arizona from California. It’s known as a base for amazing hiking trails such as Sarah’s Crack and many others all around the lake. There are all types of water sports on Lake Havasu, from boating, jet-skiing, water-skiing, fishing as well as every other activity you can imagine related to water.

The authentic London Bridge, was relocated from England, by one man named Robert McCulloch, who purchased the bridge for $2,460,000 in 1968 and moved it brick by brick from London to Lake Havasu City, AZ. The estimated cost of dismantling the structure, which was US$1.2 million, bringing the complete price to US$2.4 million. Each stone was numbered so they would know how to put it back together. Numbered stones can still be seen on the London Bridge to this day. The bridge connects the mainland to marinas and a looped path for joggers and bike riders in an area known as the Island. There are also hotels, shops, and restaurants on the Island too. Lake Havasu City Museum of History documents Native American and steamboat history. Lake Havasu State Park has beaches with mountain views, plus picnic spots, and some areas even allow temporary mooring for your boat or watercraft. The Lake was formed in 1938 after the Parker Dam was built. However, it became most famous for the London Bridge that looms above it, bringing in international visitors from around the world. Today, Lake Havasu City is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Arizona and offers a range of recreational activities for families, couples, and single travelers. Houseboats dot the lake and are available for rent along with paddle boats, kayaks, paddle-board, jet skis, and other types of water sports equipment, that can be rented by the hour. Like most resort towns Lake Havasu is chock-full of non-stop action. Also, you can take the Ferryboat across the Lake to enjoy a night of Gambling and fine food at the Casino. With the purchase of the bridge, McCulloch accelerated his development campaign, increasing the number of flights into the city. At the time, the airport was located on the island. The free flights to Lake Havasu lasted until 1978 and reportedly they totaled 2,702 flights, bringing in prospective buyers. Mr. McCulloch even paid to bring in Doctors, Firefighter, Paramedics, and Police to establish infrastructure in his city. Today, Lake Havasu City has a population of approximately 53,850 people happily residing year-round in this beautiful sun-kissed city. The Winters bring in “Snowbirds” as retired people from around the country come to enjoy the warm winter weather for five months out of the year. During this time the population of resident’s increase. The best route to take when going to Lake Havasu City from Las Vegas is to get on I-515 S/US-93 S/US-95 S. Continue on US-93 S/US-95 S. Take Veterans Memorial Hwy, US-95 S and I-40 E to AZ-95 S in Mohave County. Take exit 9 from I-40 E. Continue on AZ-95 S. Arrive in Lake Havasu City wearing fewer clothes because it is approximately 10 degrees warmer on average.

Loose Cattle releases Seasonal Affective Disorder Photo courtesy of Loose Cattle Michael Cerveris, a Two-time Tony Award winner and star of TV’s The Tick and Gotham, and Kimberly Kaye releases a holiday record for the darker side of December Not looking forward to the holidays? Then Loose Cattle’s Seasonal Affective Disorder is the Christmas album for you. Released on December 1st, the record shines a light on the darker side of the holiday season, mixing humor, honesty, and tongue-in-cheek twang into 15 Americana songs. Although recorded in Brooklyn (where bandmates Kimberly Kaye and Michael Cerveris formed Loose Cattle in 2011) and New Orleans, Seasonal Affective Disorder takes most of its influence from the American South. There’s plenty of country harmony, honky-tonk fiddle, and pedal steel guitar to be found here, all spread throughout a track list that includes originals and covers. The band turns John Denver’s “Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas)” into a rootsy, roadhouse-worthy
52
holiday tune, then scales things back for “Shepherds in a Parking Lot,” a self-penned song about banding together to survive the holiday chaos. “I grew up loving Christmas,” admits Cerveris, a West Virginia native and two-time Tony Award-winning actor (currently starring in Amazon’s the Tick and Fox’s Gotham) who served as a sideman for Husker Du front man Bob Mould before launching his own music career. “And I still love it, but I recognize that a lot of my holidays are kind of more like Charlie Brown’s Christmas than the Walton’s.” Kaye elaborates,” You’re told you’re supposed to be having this fantastic time, but if you aren’t, that makes you feel even worse. People struggle alone, but as a band, we’ve learned that connecting with other people who feel the same way makes getting through those hard times a whole lot easier.”
www.HighRiseLife.com
For Loose Cattle, Seasonal Affective Disorder is built upon a holiday tradition that dates to 2011, the same year Kaye and Cerveris launched the band in New York City. Looking to give their families an unexpected Christmas present, the bandmates booked some time in a recording studio on December 23rd, emerging that evening with their own version of Big Star’s “Jesus Christ”. The next year, they picked a new song and repeated the process. The pattern continued. Every Christmas season, Loose Cattle’s members would find themselves in a studio with friends, feasting on pizza and beer while recording more left-of-center holiday music. Seasonal Affective Disorder rounds up several songs from those yearly sessions, packaging them with a handful of new recordings. Included in the mix is a second original, “Don’t Make your Mama Cry on Christmas Day,” whose accordion riffs and French lyrics — as well as an appearance by the Grammy-nominated Lost Bayou Ramblers — nod to the Cajun influence of Louisiana. Tom McDermott, another icon from the Big Easy, plays piano on several songs, while guests like Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Shooter Jennings) and Carmella Ramsey (Patty Loveless, Reba McEntire) make their own appearances. The result is an album of country Christmas duets, offbeat carols, December/January 2017-18
Yuletide drinking songs and bah-humbug ballads, all performed not only by Loose Cattle’s members, but also their circle of musician friends in New Orleans, New York and beyond. “It’s a musical version of getting your friends and family members together for the holidays,” explains Kaye, who shares lead vocals with Cerveris. Like her duet partner, Kaye cut her teeth on the road, traveling the Warped Tour circuit as a member of a ska band before shifting her attention to roots music. Seasonal Affective Disorder nods to their punky pasts while also highlighting Loose Cattle’s poignant punch as an alt-country band. It may be a Christmas album, but it’s the sort of Christmas album you can play all year. “We’ve always loved songs that are a little twisted and a little bent, because we’re a little twisted, too,” Kaye adds. Cerveris explains, “We both have our punk-rock roots, and then our country music history. This record captures all of that.” Mixed by David Barbe (Drive-By Truckers) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie), Seasonal Affective Disorder arrives December 1st via Low Heat Records.
