LETTER FROM THE
Editor
Dear reader, Welcome to our March Design and Living Issue. Our admiration for design has always been prevalent in the genetic makeup of our publication. We can’t help but marvel on the artistry of good design. Design shakes us out of our trances, and jointly wakes us up and calms us down—reminding us all to probe, examine, think, and feel. Whether carefully annotated on our pages or envisaged in space we want to call home. Design is all around us. As we go into the highlight of our issue, we pay tribute to Christopher Guy Harrison, an award-winning internationally renowned designer and the founder and CEO of luxury furnishings brand, Christopher Guy. The CG brand has elevated the art of elegant living with presence in over 42 cities including showrooms throughout North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and has taken a forefront in the world of luxury furniture. Since, we are talking about unprecedented design we were a bit enamored by 432 Park Avenue, and there is nothing like a skyline jewel overlooking Central Park, New York Harbor, and lower Manhattan. Designed by world-renowned architect Rafael Viñoly and interior designer Deborha Berke, 432 Park Avenue has become one of the most coveted addresses in New York City and beyond.
March 2018
We also tackle the challenge of designing a small space, a common denominator for high-rise living. Turn to page 28, for the perfect tips to mix a few key pieces to create the illusion of a larger abode and make a stylish statement. Elsewhere in this issue, we take you on a journey to Phoenix for a look at the stunning AAA Four Diamond boutique hideaway, called Hermosa Inn. Originally, the residence and studio of iconic cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee, this one-of-a-kind boutique resort is the quintessential blend of modern luxury and authentic southwestern charm. I am thrilled to be sharing so many fabulous design ideas with you this month, and hope that it takes you away from your routine and is a haven for your imagination. Best wishes,

D-ZYN CORNER Written by Carol Townsend, A.S.I.D. Interior Designer
March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb…
Don’t forget, room sized area rugs, with many different patterns and colors, could help you resolve some of the flooring issues.
Or in the words of one of my former classmates, March marches on.
Needing a whole room of furniture, or just the right accent chairs? The Furniture Place on 2111 N. Rainbow Blvd., can offer you some great choices. They have great option of area rugs as well and they have fun serving their clients.
What is it you need in your Tower home? Want a change of color? Stay neutral on the walls and change out art and accessories to achieve a bright new look. I always love going to the market and seeing the fresh flowers with a burst of spring color. Or, did you just move in? What is your main goal for making this place your home? Do you need new flooring? Look at the cost of doing that, because labor will be more. They will have to take up and haul down the old flooring materials, and that will be many trips, up and down the freight elevators. So, this will be a major investment. Over time, it could pay you back, in the future sale of your home, but you want the intrinsic value to be your enjoyment of the new flooring.
14
I see a lot of stretched canvas art, of many different focus points. Do you want the beachy feel in your home? They’ve got art and accessories for that. Do you want a Mediterranean feeling? There is art and accessories to for those needs. Wall coverings are making huge headways back onto the design pallet. These are not just those old papers your mom had all over the house. A centerpiece wall in one of the graphic design wall papers, can become a piece of art, on its own.
www.HighRiseLife.com
StageThis Interior Design Don’t forget, this is your home. The wow factor you are seeking needs to be in your desired tastes, so that when you come home, you FEEL at home. Stone or tile? Wood or carpet? There is so much to choose from. Take your time. Talk to experts who deal in installing flooring in a Tower environment. But don’t be talked into something, just because they say that’s what they installed downstairs or next door. Choose the products best suited to your taste. Interior designers can help. They are not salesman, they are consultants putting your design first. They color coordinate everything, but a good designer will also incorporate things you bring into the mix. All in all, when the projects are complete, the house has been cleaned and put back in order, it needs to say Welcome Home, to you.
March 2018
Have fun with this process. Don’t get burned out by trying to do everything at one time. Remember that paint on the walls is just paint. If you don’t like a color, change it. I had a customer who lived with dark brown paneling and deep emerald green flooring, until I worked on a color chart, that suited her personality. When we changed all that, she was suddenly an outgoing, fun person. Yes, color makes a difference in how you feel. Happy March! Wynn Resorts Acquires ‘Smiling King Bear’ Sculpture by Spanish Contemporary Artist Okuda San Miguel Photos courtesy of Wynn Las Vegas
Wynn Resorts adds a new level of modern vigor to its world-class art collection with the acquisition of Smiling King Bear, a pop-surreal sculpture created by the famed Spanish contemporary artist Okuda San Miguel. At a towering 16-feet tall and executed in the artist’s signature prismatic style, the sculpture is a multicolored geometric masterpiece featuring a whimsical bear with a spiked crown, holding an equally imposing smiling ball. “We are delighted to include Okuda’s Smiling King Bear in the Wynn Resorts Collection of Fine Art. It is an exuberant, sophisticated and original statement of joy, and a colorful reference to a cherished childhood toy or the memory of a fictional character of benevolent protection,” said Roger Thomas, Executive Vice President of Design for Wynn Resorts. “Steve Wynn established the first important art collection in Las Vegas and has continued to add significant examples of 20th and 21st century art in each Wynn resort. The most delightful and rewarding aspect of designing our iconic destinations has been the selection and installation of these wonderful creations. Each work is selected for its beauty, joyous expression, and distinctive relevance to the art of its time.” Fashioned from fiberglass, aluminum, and highly pigmented synthetic enamel, Smiling King Bear originally arrived in the United States from Spain as part of an outdoor art exhibition in Downtown Las Vegas curated by global creative house, Justkids. After its acquisition, the sculpture was installed at Wynn Las Vegas during a meticulous multi-day process overseen by the artist, and is now on display in the Wynn Plaza rotunda as part of the resort’s continued appreciation and commitment to public art.
“It is great to be displayed in a prestigious Las Vegas resort like Wynn, and to continue the collaboration with Justkids in the United States. Wynn has a remarkable art collection and I am honored to be a part of it. The architectural elements of the hotel and its luminosity highlights the shapes and colors of my Smiling King Bear. This juxtaposition of classical and contemporary is very often part of my artistic concept, so the resort is a perfect fit for the sculpture,” said Okuda. Okuda is one of the most renowned artists among the contemporary art movement, celebrated for his unique geometric structures and patterns that have developed their own instantly recognizable iconographic language. Featured in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions, his works can be seen in streets and galleries around the world including India, Mali, Mozambique, United States, Japan, Chile, Brazil, Peru, South Africa, Mexico, many parts of Europe, and beyond. Highly sought after for large scale projects, Okuda is perhaps best known for his conversion of an abandoned Spanish church aptly named Kaos Temple, which has become a new icon of contemporary art.
About Wynn Las Vegas Wynn Resorts is the recipient of more Forbes Travel Guide Five Star Awards than any other independent hotel company in the world. Christopher Guy Harrison, is the founder and CEO of global luxury furnishings brand, Christopher Guy. Raised in France and Spain, British-born Christopher discovered his passion for design at a very young age. Influenced by his international background, his design carries on a sophisticated, highly-stylized luxurious French charm. From use of exotic woods and lacquers carefully handcrafted at his workshops in Central Java, each CG piece is graced with timeless elegance. His prestigious list of projects includes, the Ritz Carlton in Tokyo, the Wynn Resorts in Las Vegas, and Beverly Hills Hotel in California, to name a few. His work has garnered worldwide acclaim, and has been the recipient of numerous accolades including, Outstanding Design Award from the British Interior Design Association in 2004, and Design Icon Award by World Market Center Las Vegas in 2011. His furnishings have been featured in a host of Hollywood film productions such as “Ocean’s 13,” “The Interview,” and “Casino Royale.” March 2018

Christopher Guy furnishings have elevated the art of elegant living with presence in over 42 cities including showrooms throughout North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and has taken a forefront in the world of luxury furniture. Christopher gives us insight into the Christopher Guy brand, in his exclusive interview with High Rise Life Magazine. Q: How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as having a contemporary mood with timeless values. My aim is always to add a subtle elegance into each product with a sprinkling of the Christopher Guy DNA design philosophy which is central to the brand. Regardless of whether a piece leans towards modern or classic, the question I always pose myself is if I would wish to display that item in my home. If the answer is no, then I would tend to go back to the drawing board. Q: What is design to you? It is becoming more of an eclectic look, a mix of materials and the art of bringing these together. Classic furniture has moved on I think, and I don’t sense it will ever return to the previous levels of demand as the skills to make it has been decreasing at an alarming rate. We’re still incorporating a few classic designs but have moved to a cleaner, sophisticated, and timeless look.

The Georgian, Harrods
www.HighRiseLife.com
Q: Can you tell us a little about the design and ordering process? Every piece is handcrafted at my workshops in Central Java, which today covers more than two million square feet and where two-thousand of the world’s finest craftsmen bring my projects to life using a variety of materials, including certified Mahogany, various metals, marble, and limestone. Q: What is one of your favorite pieces you have designed? My signature patented “Chris-X” (chris-cross) leg design was inspired by the waistline of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, while the legs mimic the pose of a ballerina - drawing inspiration from the elegance, grace, and femininity of women from a bygone era. Redefining the posterior of a dining chair, I tapered the form without compromising the comfort, structural strength, or stability of the piece. Like many of my designs, inspired by the feminine form. The idea was to create a chair that was simple, sophisticated, and flexible enough to work in a variety of style categories. Q: How has the brand evolved over the years? The industry used to be localized and now it is very far ranging. Where you would once just sell within one’s own country as a brand, we now find ourselves supplying the four corners of the world. So, we’re developing ways to solve this through the creation of software. In the last five years I’ve been working on developing a software to solve this issue and ultimately help the CG brand.

The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas Q: Where do you spend most of your time? I reside between London, Singapore, and the US. Q: What is one of your favorite projects you have worked on? I would have to say, Harrods Georgian Restaurant. The project came by accident. It is a timeless restaurant built with passion. There is only one Harrods. I sought out inspiration from the elegance of the 1920’s and 1930’s mixing elements of modernism and classicism to create the perfect ambience.

Sotheby’s Expands E-Commerce Program Acquires Viyet, the Online Marketplace for Interior Design
Strengthening Sotheby's Position in the Market for Vintage and Antique Furniture, Decorative Objects and Accessories. Expanding Retail Offerings to Complement Existing Suite of Services for Buyers and Sellers Sotheby's is pleased to announce the acquisition of Viyet, the online marketplace for interior design specializing in vintage and antique furniture, decorative objects, and accessories. Viyet's business model complements Sotheby's existing suite of auction and private sale services at the high end of this market, providing clients with simple, fixed price opportunities whenever they wish to buy and sell. This acquisition advances several strategic priorities for Sotheby's including growing sales at a more accessible price point, welcoming more clients to the Company, and providing best-in-class service. Launched in 2013, Viyet serves both private individuals and the trade in the United States through its New York headquarters and a growing network of "curators" in 13 markets around the country. The Viyet team, led by CEO Elizabeth Brown, will join Sotheby's, while maintaining their brand and business operation. They will report to John Auerbach, General Manager of Sotheby's North American Art & Objects Division. "Sotheby's has centuries of experience and tremendous expertise, and Viyet is a digitally-native brand that knows how to leverage technology to serve today's consumers," said Tad Smith, Sotheby's CEO, adding, "and together we share a passion for client service at the highest level. We are delighted to have Elizabeth and her team on board and look forward to broadening the range of property we handle as well as expanding the services we can offer to existing and new clients." John Auerbach, General Manager of Sotheby's Art & Objects Division in New York, commented, "Our collectors buy across category and price point, and Viyet reflects how they shape and refine their everyday environments. Across all of Sotheby's businesses, our goal is to maximize value by matching property with the best possible audience of buyers. Alongside Sotheby's successful auction and private sale platforms, Viyet provides yet another venue for the sale of furniture and decorative objects." The Viyet model offers both buyers and sellers the opportunity to transact immediately, rather than wait for an upcoming auction, and provides Sotheby's a low-touch model to handle more moderately-priced items. Viyet does not take possession of property consigned for sale. Potential consignments are

evaluated on site, photographed, and catalogued for listing on Viyet.com. A "listed" price and "reserve" price are approved by the consignor and buyers can "Make an Offer" that can be accepted, countered, or declined by Viyet on the consignor's behalf. Once sold, Viyet arranges pickup and delivery. Viyet offers a range of furniture and decorative objects, with antique and vintage material being the most popular. The site generally offers items priced at $5,000 and below, and some have sold for as much as $100,000. Sotheby's vast sourcing network will provide an influx of antique and vintage material within that value range, focusing Viyet's offering more deliberately on those popular categories while simultaneously raising their average selling price. "Sotheby's is the perfect partner to help take Viyet to the next level. We are thrilled to introduce Sotheby's exceptional product assortment to our audience of savvy design buyers, as well as to align ourselves with the trust and design authority of the Sotheby's brand," said Viyet's CEO Elizabeth Brown. Viyet complements Sotheby's existing suite of services across several platforms, categories, and price points. Increasingly, clients are choosing to engage with Sotheby's online – in 2017, online buyers spent more than $180 million, and 53% of all online bidders were new to the Company. In addition to facilitating online bidding in live auctions, Sotheby's successfully staged 36 online-only auctions across a variety of categories in 2017. ABOUT SOTHEBY'S Sotheby's has been uniting collectors with world-class works of art since 1744. Sotheby's became the first international auction house when it expanded from London to New York (1955), the first to conduct sales in Hong Kong (1973), India (1992) and France (2001), and the first international fine art auction house in China (2012). Today, Sotheby's presents auctions in 10 different salesrooms, including New York, London, Hong Kong and Paris, and Sotheby's BidNow program allows visitors to view all auctions live online and place bids from anywhere in the world. ABOUT VIYET Viyet is a New York-based e-commerce marketplace specializing in consignment services for pre-owned luxury designer furniture, vintage, and antique home goods. For consignors, Viyet offers a full-service solution encompassing all steps of the selling process, from photography to moving and delivery. For buyers, Viyet offers access to timeless pieces within a competitive marketplace. Viyet is a subsidiary of Sotheby's.

The Hermosa Inn Arizona a Unique Boutique Hideaway
Written by Merilee Kern
Nestled in the heart of Paradise Valley, Arizona—an exclusive Phoenix enclave that’s just minutes from bustling Scottsdale—lies a AAA Four Diamond boutique hideaway called Hermosa Inn. Originally the residence and studio of iconic cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee, this one-of-a-kind boutique resort is the quintessential blend of modern luxury and authentic southwestern charm. Here you’ll revel in world-class amenities amid a peaceful desert ambiance that’s punctuated by striking panoramic views of the neighboring Camelback Mountain.
38
www.HighRiseLife.com
With just forty-three casitas, The Hermosa Inn is ostensibly the most intimate of the region’s luxury resorts, which translates to highly personalized service that’s genuine and familial in feel. Having completed a $5.5 million renovation earlier this year, The Hermosa Inn unveiled ten new deluxe suite casitas and twelve completely renovated historic old-style rancho casitas. Each is designed to accommodate every type of guest, from hardened business travelers to honeymooners. With cozy in-room beehive fireplaces, openair patios, a lively bar and communal seating areas, on-site painting classes, free-use beach cruisers, seasonal poolside yoga, hot tub facilities, a business suite, and dining to-die-for, The Hermosa Inn is an ideal locale for small group getaways, from weddings, intimate family vacations, and bachelorette weekends to golf outings, board meetings, and executive retreats. Perhaps the most notable of The Hermosa Inn’s amenities is the AAA Four-Diamond LON’s restaurant. The newlyexpanded eatery features an authentic farm-to-table tasting menu, complete with top-rated signature cocktails and an awe-inspiring subterranean wine cellar. Lauded as one of the valley’s very best, the outdoor garden patio area is amply sized and replete with wood burning fireplaces, plush couches, and gorgeous fauna and flora that all surround a large tricking water fountain as the focal point. It’s truly the perfect gathering place for any occasion, as is the adjacent LON’s Last Drop bar—a cowboy-chic “watering hole” that’s part of the indoor section of the award-winning restaurant. Interestingly, this bar was named after Megargee’s most famous painting: “Last Drop From His Stetson,” which was commissioned by the Stetson Hat Company in the 1920’s, and to this day still appears on the inside of every topof-the-line Stetson hat. Having dined at LON’s, I can attest that the fare is worth the trip, alone. “We describe our food as globally inspired Arizona fare,” said Melanie Volkers, Director of Sales and Marketing for The Hermosa Inn. “It’s globally inspired because of the various techniques and influences our chefs use, and it’s Arizona fare because we source local ingredients whenever possible. Our Executive Chef is a ninth generation Arizonan who grew up on his family farm just north of Tucson. For him, farm to table is not just the latest culinary trend, this is truly his lifestyle. change frequently based on what is available from the local farms.” Understandably, art abounds at The Hermosa Inn. Many original pieces of Megargee’s artwork are on display in the lobby as well as the restaurant. Additionally, copies of many of his works are in the guestrooms as well. Rich in history and culture and oriented toward luxury-level guest service, The Hermosa Inn is the antidote to the assembly line of bland chain hotels or even “one size fits all” resort properties where quantity trumps quality. The property also boasts many events that promote fun and frivolity among guest, who are given various ways to commiserate while they vacay. For example, they have a vibrant arts and culinary program of events throughout the year, and also offer painting instruction with a pro, wine dinners, artist demonstration brunches, cooking classes, and more. These are among the many reasons the property was recently named a Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards winner as the #1 Hotel in the West/Southwest and the #9 Hotel in the U.S. An amazing accomplishment by any measure. Speaking of art, during my own stay I participated in a lovely garden painting class with Carrie Curran, which involved an afternoon of entertaining and engaging art instruction while sipping champagne and nibbling on cheese and charcuterie. Carrie is regularly available at the property to provide guidance for an artistic journey perfectly suited for enthusiastic beginners to emerging professionals. Carrie teaches, inspires and guides participants as they use acrylic on canvas to create their very own keepsake masterpiece. Various themes and programs are available with Carrie onsite, at the resort all throughout the year. It’s a relaxing and highly worthwhile way to spend a few hours of your vacation day. But ultimately, at the heart of The Hermosa Inn is authenticity. Although the resort offers modern amenities like WiFi, high-definition TVs, and a refrigerator and Keurig in every suite, this cactus and flower-filled hacienda is overflowing with old-world charm. “We have not turned to technology to replace human interaction,” said Volkers. “In fact, we don’t even use electronic key cards: we still issue real keys at check-in.” I can attest that there is a decidedly residential feel to the property. It feels like a neighborhood. In fact, the property is duly tucked away in an actual suburban neighborhood that does promote a more relaxed sensibility than the more conspicuous resorts. For my part, from the moment I arrived, I felt transported and inspired, and by the time I left I was rejuvenated and ready to book a return visit. This all very much by design, but not driven by a numbers-hungry marketing engine. Volkers points out, “Our approach to hospitality is simple–we strive to create memories and exceed guests’ expectations every time so they return time and time again...it’s our people that truly make a difference.” As the Executive Editor and Producer of “The Luxe List,” Merilee Kern is an internationally-regarded consumer product trends expert and hospitality industry voice of authority—a travel, dining, leisure and lifestyle expert who spotlights noteworthy marketplace innovations, change makers, movers and shakers. The James New York – NoMad celebrates being fully open with the opening of Scarpetta’s new flagship location in NoMad, following 10 years on 14thstreet, and the introduction of The Seville social cocktail lounge. The fully renovated property boasts 360 guest rooms, including 28 suites, 2 penthouses and 5,000 square feet of meeting spaces designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen. The opening of The James is a key development in the renaissance of the NoMad neighborhood, joining the company of prestigious hotels in the area. The Hotel’s developer GFI Development Company, has played a key role in the rebirth of the area. GFI and Allen Gross also developed The NoMad and now The James as the next hallmark in the renaissance of the NoMad area. “It has been a great joy to see the transformative affect that GFI Development’s properties have had on the NoMad neighborhood,” said Allen Gross. “We are proud to introduce The James New York – NoMad to the neighborhood as the next phase as we continue to lead the way in the revitalization of NoMad.” With a nod to the rich history of the neighborhood as the birthplace of the iconic “Manhattan” cocktail and the stunning beaux-arts style building that originally opened as the historic landmarked “Hotel Seville” in 1904, The Seville cocktail lounge is a new concept by LDV Hospitality finding a perfect home at The James New York – NoMad. Givenchy at Home The House of Givenchy Unveils an Exclusive Scenography at its Milan Sant’Andrea Store for the Arrival of Clare Waight Keller’s Debut Collections To celebrate the in-store arrival of artistic director Clare Waight Keller’s first collections for Givenchy, the house is delighted to premiere its spring-summer ready-to-wear and accessories lines in a true Givenchy “home” on the Via Sant’Andrea, in the heart of the Milan fashion district. Givenchy’s spring-summer 2018 collections for women and men was debuted on February 15th, 2018, three weeks prior to arriving in stores worldwide on March 5th. At the main entrance, classic wrought-iron gate elements evoke the original couture house Monsieur Givenchy founded in the 1950s at 3 Avenue George V in Paris. Inside, a space inspired by a typically elegant Parisian townhouse replicates the chic, cozy ambiance of Clare Waight Keller’s private home.
March 2018
Ready-to-wear collections and new classics such as the GV3 handbag assume their natural places, forming a living tableau: a bag sits casually on an armchair, a dress drapes over the back of a sofa, and shoes line a dressing room area. Strategically placed mirrors echo the advertising campaign for spring-summer 2018 shot by Steven Meisel, a visual reminder that Givenchy’s past is reflected in its present, and the present points to its future. Traditional moldings adorn walls painted in a flattering shade of soft ivory, while plant arrangements suspended from the ceiling and antique rugs delineating intimate lounge areas lend warmth to flooring in parquet and burnished concrete. Furnishings evoke the intimist ambiance found in Givenchy’s current ad campaign: medallion armchairs mix with modernist settees, vintage 1970s light fixtures in metal or glass, and elegant groupings of greenery.
In this environment, architecture, design, luxury, music, art, culture, and people come together to celebrate an exciting new era at Givenchy. Its context is rich in meaning: history and heritage embrace different beauties and a poetic mood - sometimes with a romantic air, at others with the rock-inflected attitude that is central to Clare Waight Keller’s vocabulary for the house. Givenchy spring-summer 2018 ready-to-wear collections debuted at the Givenchy store in Milan on February 15th, 2018 at 10am local time. “If you want to make changes to your nose, or any facial feature, you should weigh the pros and cons of a permanent solution vs. a temporary solution,” Dugar says. “You need to decide what it is you are really after and then determine if the procedure you’re considering will accomplish that.”

Spring is just around the corner, and so are the newest fashion trends. Just like every other woman, fashion is a statement, something that helps contribute into making a great first impression. When walking into a room full of people, you want to be center of attention and one they’ll remember. This spring have a little fun in coordinating your outfits, let your personality shine through your clothes.
Blush
Lavender
Blush is such an amazing color that pops and compliments any skin tone. It’s super feminine and gives off that feeling of sweetness and innocence. If you’re feeling adventurous you can pair this blush color with some lace, or some beads. It also looks great paired with other bold colors such as navy, black, and burgundy, it adds strength and elegance to the pink. It has been known that people who admire the color blush are ones that are hopeful, and positive.
It can be a challenge sometimes to figure out what goes great with the color lavender, or with any shade of purple. The main component when trying to rock this color, is pure confidence. Lavender is a favored color that a lot of people like to wear and is a popular color to wear during the spring. It looks great paired with any color jeans, and other pastel colors such as light blue and blush. Purple symbolizes royalty, wealth, wisdom, and sophistication. However, try not to wear too much of it, you want to create a balance.
Yellow One of the great things about yellow, is that it can be worn formally and casually. From blazers, to skirts, to shoes and bags, yellow is a color that is bold and gets you noticed almost immediately. If the wrong shade of yellow is worn, or if you’re wearing too much yellow it can become over powering. It is best that you wear yellow away from the face, such as a black top with a yellow skirt, or dark top and dark blue jeans, with yellow shoes and a matching purse. Yellow is a to go to color, that reflects happiness and puts out positive vibes.

Christian Nava is the Latin Artist to Watch in 2018
Written by Yelena Brezhneva
That’s right! Billboard is standing behind Pandora’s watch list that was released in December 2017 by publishing the list. Pandora is a leader in digital trends, conducting a most comprehensive music analysis using scientific algorithms to predict which artists are most likely to hit the Billboard 200 chart for the first time within a year.
46
www.HighRiseLife.com
Pandora’s team of highly trained musicologists analyze hundreds of attributes for each recording, personalizing your experience. The notable list of predictions is based on the likelihood of success, and many factors are taken into consideration, like growth on the platform, originality, cultural relevance, potential for growth and other data. Tiana Lewis, Lead Pop Curator, shared that “From trendsetters to hit makers, we’ve been watching these hip hop and R&B artists create a buzz on Pandora. We analyzed street cred, crew love, industry insights, social data and plenty of vibe to pick our faves for 2018. Look out for these artists to make moves in the next year.” Latin Pop sensation Christian Nava is a talented, young songwriter that shares the ‘we the people’ stories the old way, through songs. Each song is a story that’s coming to life with his piercing voice. Since the beginning of time and on every continent, people used to pass on history and stories using poetry and music. It was an art, and only a few would qualify to do that. Each country used such people to pass on their legacy. “Old-fashioned Pandora,” we might say. Nava could be called a Mexican balladeer, but he’s much more. His love of music took him further into a new genre that he’s creating by mixing new styles and delivery methods. Everything around us is evolving, including music. It is refreshing to see such a young man touching young souls and inspiring bilingual culture. Nava’s family doesn’t have a musical background. His personal interest in music was a natural reflection of his soul. It all started for him at school and he was never thinking about becoming a professional musician, he just followed his heart.
Las Vegas became a home for him and his family. Originally from Napa, California, he was drawn to Las Vegas, which was more favorable to a young aspiring musician. Music was taking up more of his time; he wanted to learn how to play the guitar and expand his skills. A key to success is to follow your passion. Music became his passion. Christian followed the lead of his passion, and it took him to a new heights. At first he was performing the classical Mexican genre; his Michoacán roots and influences are very strong. Since he was 16 years of age he has been writing his own songs. Now, at the age of 25, he has mastered his art and earned the love of his global fans. Nava has performed with big Mexican names like Banda Carnaval, Calibre 50, Banda El Recodo, Gerardo Ortiz (nominated by iHeart Radio Music Awards 2018 as Regional Mexican Artist of the Year as well as the Regional Song of the Year), and Remmy Valenzuela. Starting from his first on-stage experience in Las Vegas that brought in over a thousand people, Christian is used to big crowds. His strong fan base keeps growing and expanding. Christian’s individual vision evolved his personal style, and experimenting with many different genres of music brought him to finding his own. He’s a leader, not a follower, my friends. It is reflected in his hair cut, in his sense of fashion, in his lyrics, and in his music. He is CHRISTIAN NAVA. Pandora’s watch list reflects gifted and hard-working artists that will be impacting music for years to come. Well, Christian Nava is one. Remember that name⏤ and that you’ve heard it here first! Havana 1920
Driving Cuban Cuisine Cravings in Downtown San Diego Written by Merilee Kern

www.HighRiseLife.com
“Havana 1920 celebrates my personal heritage, and with that, we created a place that really transports guests to Hemmingway’s Cuba,” said Joe Santos, COO of GBOD Hospitality Group, whose grandparents migrated from the United States to Cuba. “From music to décor to dishes and drinks to service, every guest is wrapped in the spirit Cuba.” San Diego tourists and locals, alike are hailing Havana 1920, which opened its downtown doors in late 2017 in the city’s famed Gaslamp Quarter. Conceived by the GBOD Hospitality Group and with a kitchen helmed by Chef Anthony Porras, Havana 1920 exudes history—“channeling Cuba’s hay days when the island became a playground for Americans to escape prohibition and hit a happening bar scene,” as cited in its promotional materials. Here, Latin food lovers can bask in authentic and classic Cuban cuisine while sipping from the eatery’s impressive collection of more than 150 rums, including French-style Rhum Agricole, classic British Navy, and the hard-to-find Appleton Estate Joy. Also notable is the entertainment, as the restaurant boasts live and decidedly festive music nightly. To this I can attest, having dined at the locale myself. While the starter options abound, I appreciated the concise entrée selections: just four dishes this destination does exceedingly well. As an Empenada aficionado, I tried two of the three varieties available: beef picadillo and ham and cheese. The morsels, which came three to an order, had fittingly flaky and tender dough while the savory filling had big, hugely satisfying flavor. The Ceviche Tropical appetizer was equally amazing. This mélange of shrimp, grilled pineapple, jalapeno, cucumber, tomato, onion and cilantro was presented in a sweeter format than the more common acid-driven ceviches, which was a welcome departure, indeed. With it, March 2018
I reveled in the authentic Cuban bread that Havana 1920 flies in from La Segunda bakery in Florida. For my entrée, of the four I chose the Cuban Style Roast Pork, cooked classic Cuban style—marinated in traditional seasonings and cooked to tender pulled meat perfection. Of course, a side of black beans, white rice and fried sweet plantains accompanied. Portions here are appropriate—not overdone or gluttonous, but certainly enough to satiate. Having been so enamored by my visit to Havana 1920, I sought out Santos to discuss what makes this eatery such an exciting and unique addition to downtown San Diego’s flourishing ethnic food scene. Here’s what he had to say.
preparing different cuisines: Latin, Asian, Italian and more. He spent time working for Eurest Compass Group, which thrived in corporate dining, and has worked for companies including Pfizer, San Diego Gas & Electric and Qualcomm. He also worked at two hotels in San Diego County, first at Arterra Restaurant and Lounge in Del Mar, Calif. and at Park Hyatt Resort Aviara in Carlsbad, Calif. where he learned different cooking techniques from many talented chefs he worked under, and also served celebrities such as Jim Carey and John Madden, to name a few. He earned his culinary certificate from Grossmont College in 2006. Does the restaurant have a “signature dish”?
Authentic. My grandparents migrated to the United States from Cuba; it represents my personal heritage. Havana 1920 is designed to transport guests to Hemmingway’s Cuba; to wrap you up in the spirit of Cuba. We have worked hard to create dishes and cocktails that incorporate ingredients and recipes that would make Grandma proud.
Our signature item at Havana 1920 has to be the sandwich Cubano, made with slices of slow roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread served with yuca frita. It’s served on the Cuban bread from La Segunda Central Bakery in Tampa, Fla. It’s the bread that makes our version of the sandwich special, and lends itself to our passion for authenticity. The Cubano originated in cafes that catered to Cuban workers in Key West and Ybor City, Tampa, two early Cuban communities in Florida; it really is a "working man's" meal.
Tell me about the chef’s background – what are some career highlights?
What is your personal favorite item on the menu?
Chef Anthony Porras has been working in the culinary industry for more than 14 years, with a wide variety of experience
It is really hard to pick one favorite item. Right now it’s the Ensalada de Aguacate, avocado salad. It’s made with Caribbean

roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread; and the Elena Ruz, a Cuban turkey sandwich with cream cheese and strawberry on a sweet Cuban roll; among other small bites, sandwiches and plates.
every sense of the restaurant as we make this a flagship for this brand.
Menu aside, what is your personal favorite aspect of the eatery?
Beginning at 11 a.m., the ground level café will also serve a variety of cafecitos and espressos, including: Cafecito Cubano, the classic Cuban espresso served sweet and strong; a shareable version of the Cafecito Cubano, the espresso colada; Cubano cortado, Cafecito Cubano with steamed milk; Bombon, a combination of espresso and sweetened condensed milk; and Mexican mocha, a chocolate mocha with a kick of cinnamon and spicy heat.
At Havana 1920, we don’t want to be stagnant – we hope to always be adding in new things and ideas. We also hope to expand to offer cigar rolling classes, rum tastings, salsa dancing and more. The idea is to keep things fresh and exciting, while also making sure to stay true to our concept.
For me, it’s the ambiance. It truly transports me to another place. Guests reach the upstairs dining room by climbing a Cubana airlines stairwell lined with antique plane tickets and travel posters. The dining room is filled with homespun tables and mismatched chairs. You feel like you’ve left San Diego and have entered a home in Old Havana where you’ve sat down with family for a bite to eat. What can patrons expect from dining at this restaurant? Our goal at Havana 1920 is for everything the guest experiences– the food, cocktails, décor, music and ambiance– to take you on a journey to Cuba; Hemmingway’s Cuba that our grandparents lived in and experienced. What other qualities set this restaurant apart from other dining options in the area? In addition to being the only Cuban restaurant in the area, we’re very passionate about our entertainment and beverage program. Our décor really tells a story; it’s both unique and authentic with a variety of Cuban-style chairs, Cuban cigar boxes and a machine making fresh-pressed sugar cane juice for cocktails. What’s new and exciting at Havana 1920? We just launched lunch service on Jan. 8! A sampling of lunch selections, which are available starting at 11 a.m., includes classic Cuban croquettes filled with ham and béchamel or roasted chicken and béchamel; papa rellenas, mashed potatoes fried and filled with seasoned ground beef and peppers, or cheese and peppers; tostones, the Caribbean classic twice-fried green plantains served with Cuban mojo criollo and Havana Royale sauces; the sandwich Cubano, slices of slow

What might people not know about the restaurant, but should? First, our check presenters are actually cuadernos, school notebooks from 1940s Spain. They all have different animals on them, and our manager, Andrew Walsh, spent a lot of time and research to get them! Secondly, when it comes to the décor, one of our favorite pieces are the mini Bacardi rum bottles. Also notable is that we get our Cuban bread flown in from La Segunda Central Bakery in Tampa, Fla. La Segunda Bakery is a family-owned institution in the thriving Cuban district of Ybor City, Fla. that has been operating for 103 years. Why is the Gaslamp District the optimal spot for this restaurant? The draw of the Gaslamp gives us the exposure we love but mainly, we are the first Cuban restaurant (the first Caribbean altogether) in the area. It has been much needed. What are some of your long and short term goals for the restaurant? Our goals for Havana 1920 include consistency and expansion. We look forward to maintaining a high-level experience in
How will the restaurant maintain and/or elevate its image?
Any interesting factoids about the restaurant? Most of the décor is authentic to pre-communist Cuba and the 1920s, and belonged to my [Joe Santos] grandparents as well as a collector in Calle Ocho. Accommodating up to 80 guests and designed by GBOD’s own design team led by Colin Mangold, Santos’ vision for Havana 1920 is now a noteworthy reality. The intimate, 1,000-square-foot restaurant and bar is filled with authentic touches, from the variety of Cuban-style chairs to Cuban cigar boxes and a machine that makes fresh-pressed sugar cane juice for cocktails. It’s truly great escapism in the heart of downtown San Diego.

REAL ESTATE | TRENDS
Real Estate MarketTrends Real Estate Market is Staying Hot Real estate market is continuing the same pattern that began Lack of supply shows that real estate market is still in demand. Nevada is showing an overall price increase of 10% and California 7.6% compared to last year. Sellers are trying to take advantage of the market causing a rise in prices. Buyers have to act quick and be ready to pay more than listed price for homes in low to mid 250k. Multiple offer situation is becoming an everyday reality and houses are sold with 20k above the listing price. Real estate market across the country is dictated by many factors including: taxation, mortgage rates, employment ratio, availability, life changing events like divorce, marriage, and investor influences. Freddie Mac reported A comprehensive income of $5.6 billion in 2017. Mortgage rates are climbing and projections show that this trend will continue throughout 2018. Divorce rates in Nevada are the highest compared to other places in US. According to US Censors Bureau, 30% of people never got married, 55% of people married at least once, and 12% of people married twice.
Written by Yelena Brezhneva They also share that every 8 seconds one person is born, imagine that while you are reading this, a child just got delivered. But every 11 seconds one person dies... do you think our population rate would decline? Not really, as every 26 seconds an international migration is happening as well. California has the most population in US – 253.8 per sq. Mile. The United States population on February 14 was: 327,192,385 People will continue to be human, will keep getting married, have kids, move-in and move-out and contribute to real estate market. 2018 is promising to be better than 2017. Now let's look at details and some hard core data and statistics. LAS VEGAS Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors reporting: Closed Sales increased 4.9 percent for Single Family homes and 3.1 percent for Townhouse/Condo homes. California Association of Realtors® reports that they are experiencing lowest inventory in more than 13 years. Sales dropped in five of six counties in the Southern California region, with both Ventura and Orange County decreasing by double digits. “A severe shortage of homes for sale continues to push up home prices and erode affordability, which in turn is subduing home sales,” said C.A.R. President Steve White. “What’s more, with the passage of the tax reform bill that makes homebuying less attractive, homeownership costs will increase for many, which could reduce the desire and demand for buying a home.” Median prices are steadily increasing and that tends to slow the market down. As we see in 2017 CA opened with strong sales that declined by the end of the year showing the lowest sales. We see that sales at the lowest segment of the market declined but kept steady at the high-end segment. Home prices across CA state continue to grow. Forty-five of the 51 reported counties recorded a year-over-year price increase, with 19 of them growing at double-digit rates. Would you like to find out the value of YOUR home?
