D-ZYN CORNER Dress Your Home For Fall
Written by Carol Townsend, A.S.I.D. Interior Designer
October is truly a unique month in the industry. We just got through the summer market and now look toward the fashion for fall in our industry.
80% of the people who are warm color people, often feel most at home in a warm color environment. I am one of those people.
So many reading this will wonder how fashion relates to interior decorating… as one who has been active in both venues, I will tell you they are intricately linked. Let’s use color as an example. Did you know that the 80/20 rule works in color choices in our home, just as it affects what we choose to wear?
20% of the cool color people- and you know who you are!- decorate in warm color tones. The most frequent question I have gotten over the years by these people are "why don’t I feel good in this house?" By simply changing their color schemes to cool tones, I have helped them find their peace and tranquility. Imagine a can of paint changing your outlook on life.
What is the 80/20 rule? Well, remembering that you are either a warm color person- someone who looks best in yellows, peaches, coppers, brownsthat places you in the warm color category. If, however, you look best in blues, purples, fuscias, bright chromatic reds- you are a cool color person.
12
What do you want your home to look like this fall? Crisp fall colors abound in the yellows, oranges, deep teals and claret reds. Pillows, fashion throws, area rugs and fall foliage décor are abundantly available to fill your personal shopping cart. www.HighRiseLife.com
StageThis Interior Design If you are part of the 80%, this season is yours. But cool color people need not despair. Notice, I said teals and clarets are part of the season’s color pallet. You too can find great fall season décor for your home. I love this time of the year. Not only because these are the colors I wear well, but because it is so exciting to move my home into the fall season with these great colors. I hit the fabric warehouses and hunt up sumptuous fabrics to create new pillows, duvet covers, draperies, etc. Have you thought how easy it would be to change the look in your bedroom by having duvet covers that change your look seasonally? I normally don’t suggest or design with draperies, in the older sense of the word. But being able to frame your gorgeous windows, which look out onto the skyline, can make an exciting statement to friends and family who come to visit and celebrate your life in your new tower home. It was amazing October 2017
how I used to drape dramatic swaths of fabric on my huge windows. Now, I take great pains to leave them as open as possible. But, again, framing the windows with some colorful fabrics is great and enhances what your rooms look like to those who are entering your home. Pick up some of the paint pallets at your favorite paint store, put together some new color boards and see where your eye takes you. I have a client in California who loves that when I choose colors for them in their home, she usually doesn’t get tired of them for at least five years. It helps that she is open to try new things... like the cantaloupe color I used in her guest house. It was exciting to see how her collection of Mexican art looked so good on her walls. The bed linens, table toppers, and bathroom accessories we found in local shops complimented these colors as well. Let your imagination guide you. Color can be a spontaneous way to dress up your home this fall.

The Ultimate Driving Excursion Fast LaneTravel,Inc. Sven Teub
er
Written by Selcen Kavruklar, Editor-in-Chief | Photo credit Fast Lane Travel, Inc.
Experience the thrill and excitement of the world's greatest cars– a hand-picked selection of Porsche models await you as you pilot along the highways, byways, and mountain roads. Fast Lane Travel is a luxury, exclusive and unforgettable driving experience with destinations throughout Europe.
E
ach exceptional journey is complete with luxury accommodation, gastronomic dining, Champagne, fine wine, and an adventure of a lifetime. Sven Teuber, Senior Brand Ambassador gives us insight into this ultimate driving experience. Q: Can you give us a little background history of the company and how these tours originally started? Peter Sontag, CEO of Fast Lane Travel, Inc., started bringing groups to the PORSCHE Factory in 1976. It started when several Americans asked Peter Sontag if he wouldn’t mind bringing a group of friends to Stuttgart to take delivery of their new PORSCHES. It was big success, so the Porsche Club of America (PCA) asked him to revive their “Treffen” tours. Porsche wasn’t yet the brand they are today, so when 100 Americans came to Stuttgart to take delivery, it made the papers and local news. The success of those early years leads to a long list of alumni that wanted more fun driving PORSCHES in Europe. Eventually, we could get access to a fleet of rental PORSCHES and our group tours opened to anyone wanting a luxurious driving tour.
18
Q: Can you tell us about how Fast Lane Travel is the official organizer for Porsche Club of America for the “Treffen” tour? “Treffen” is the German word for get together or to meet and was used by the PCA for these trips to Germany. We became the official travel company for the “European Treffen” due to our expertise in bringing groups of PORSCHE lovers to Germany to experience the factory and drive new model PORSCHES where they were meant to be driven. Q: Can you tell us about yourself and involvement with the company? Five years ago, Peter Sontag, the founder and CEO of the company was giving a lecture in one of my graduate school courses and I ended up asking him to be my mentor. From there, I joined the team and worked my way up and eventually was guiding groups and helping with many of the operational elements of the business.
www.HighRiseLife.com
Q: What should a tour goer expect on a typical journey? Two things – lots of fun, not only driving, but sharing the experience with likeminded travelers and second, not having to think. Our guests come back for more because it’s a vacation where we plan every detail. Our guests come to enjoy a world-class luxury vacation with a twist of adrenaline. Q: Where do these tours go? Typical duration of a tour? How often are tours organized?
I always tell people, it’s not just a car guys tour. These are very thought-out luxury vacations with PORSCHES instead of a bus or having to take a train. Your luggage is taken to the hotel and waiting for you when you check into your room, great food, great wine, great hotel properties, and great people. The people are the real success of our tours. Guests make lifelong friends. Q: Can you customize a tour with a tour guide?
Most of the tours start in Germany and go to various European Countries. Switzerland and Austria are very popular as is Italy and recently France. The average length is nine days and we have 11 tours scheduled for 2018.
There’s a motto at Fast Lane Travel, “never say no to a customer.” In fact, I’m leaving for Europe soon to lead a private group of two down into Lake Como and then to the French Riviera. That’s not the norm, but we also organize custom tours both with guides and without.
Q: When and where does the next tour take you?
Q: What makes these tours special compared to any other type of tour?
Our next tour will be our 2018 Spring Ultimate Adventure, which visits Lake Constance, Switzerland, and the Black Forest. We also drive through Liechtenstein, Italy, and France, so it is a tour through six countries. All 5 Star and some great driving.
The attention to detail and our 40 plus years of going over there. We’ve built great relationships. You can’t beat driving down a pedestrian only zone in Bellagio, Italy with 15 PORSCHES growling down the narrow walkway. Everyone becomes a rock star in that moment. It’s a joy to hear the chatter on the walkie talkies and everyone is taking pictures.
Q: Who do you think is the ideal candidate for a tour? We do have a fair share of corporate incentive tours and private groups, but most guests join one of our tours listed on our website.
20
Q: On average how many tour goers attend these tours on a typical journey? Do you have repeat goers? YES! we are very fortunate to have a strong following of loyal alumni that keep coming back for more tours. Mr. Eddy Yates, holds the record having been on 22 of our tours over the years. Our average group tours have about 24 guests split between two drive groups. So, six cars behind each guide. Q: Can you tell us a little about the company’s involvement in giving back to the community? Giving back to the community is a big part of what we do. Every year we donate a free tour to the Porsche Club of America, which a lucky member wins. Peter has established several endowed scholarships. We’ve been known to give away a few red Power Wheel Porsches to local kids as well. Really, it’s about sharing our love for PORSCHES and travel. Q: How has Fast Lane Travel evolved over the years as far as services? Have the tours evolved? Are there any new destinations being added? Every year we add new tours and change our tours slightly. There are new places to see, new hotels that open, new restaurants, and new roads. Over the years, we continue to add new trips to new locations. In 2015, we organized a PORSCHE Tour in China. That was unique!

Beauty pageants have given women the opportunity to acknowledge their beauty, knowledge, and skills all around the world. I caught up with Stephanie Barrett, who is the current reigning Mrs. Nevada. Stephanie won Mrs. Nevada-America Pageant after entering the competition as Mrs. Clark County. She placed first in a field of 15 competitors, topping the final five of Mrs. Henderson, Mrs. Spring Valley, Mrs. Douglas County, and Mrs. Downtown Summerlin.

Weddin Photo by
S
tephanie gives us an insight into the exciting world of being Mrs. Nevada-America. Here are her answers.
Q: Can you give us a little bio about yourself?
My name is Stephanie Barrett. I am a wife, mother, career woman, model, and the current Mrs. Nevada-America. Seven years ago, I married the man of my dreams, Adam, and have since had three incredible children, Cash, Paisley, and Taj. I am currently a Senior Business Analyst at Scientific Games Corporation and fortunate enough to be surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the gaming industry. When I am not working, you can find me hanging out with my family, active in my community, or modeling as time allows. Q: How does it feel to be Mrs. Nevada 2017? Being Mrs. Nevada has been the experience of a lifetime. I have had opportunities that people only dream of. Some of my favorite experiences as Mrs. Nevada include: volunteering with my family at The Ronald McDonald House in Rome, Italy, dreaming up dress ideas with my husband and best friend to send to my dress designers, Elizabeth Calderon and Debbie Carrol, meeting so many incredible people, and having my family by my side supporting me on this crazy journey. When you give back in your community, you think that you are making an impact, but what you realize is it’s you who is most impacted.
October 2017
Q: How does your family life play into all of this? I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have such a supportive and amazing family! Nearly everything I do involves my family. Whether its sponsor meetings with my husband, community service with my family, or wardrobe discussions, my family is involved every step of the way. I think being Mrs. Nevada is an incredible opportunity and period of growth, not only for me, but also for my family. I hope to teach my children the importance of giving back and knowing that doing the little things can bring the brightest smiles to someone’s darkest days. I hope these “little things” become so natural to them that it becomes who they are as people. Being involved in the community together has brought us closer as a family. We have been able to experience this life-changing journey together. Another interesting thing about my husband’s involvement in the pageant experience is that he is the first person I bounce ideas from. I especially love talking with him about wardrobe! He has an incredible eye for fashion and is not afraid to give me his honest opinion. Some of my custom dresses started with an idea from him. I have loved having my husband by my side throughout my reign as Mrs. Nevada. I am grateful for his willingness to help me with whatever I need. Q: What does your typical day consist of? A typical day for me includes a full day of work at Scientific Games, where I am constantly learning and growing. My career has blossomed there. I am grateful to have such an incredible support system
at work, full of wonderful managers. I appreciate my boss and CFO, who inspire me daily and truly care about all aspects of each of their employee’s lives. On my lunch, I try to do some sort of community service, wardrobe fitting, interview prep, or attend sponsor meetings. I do this on my lunch so I can spend my evenings with the people who matter the most to me: my family! Now, the people at my company know that when I am dressed up, I usually have some sort of event or meeting for Mrs. Nevada that day. In the evening, I am found attending my children’s athletic endeavors, family dinners, baking with my children, an occasional date night, and of course playing basketball in our house. We have a full-sized basketball hoop in our entry way that is played on constantly. Our house doesn’t seem normal without basketballs constantly bouncing and extra kids over to play. I always want my children to remember a home full of love, laughter, and good food. Q: How do you plan your wardrobe for pageants? One of the most exciting and glamorous parts about pageantry is fashion. You have a chance to express yourself and show a little bit more about who you are through what you wear. As I prepared to compete for Mrs. America, I had numerous dresses made from two local designers, Elizabeth Calderon and Debbie Carrol. Living in Las Vegas has countless benefits. One of the greatest rewards is being able to work with two of the best designers in the country. My husband (Adam), director (Jackie McKenna), and pageant coach/hair stylist/friend (Kristie Jelinsky), were constantly sending each
37
other ideas of different dresses for inspiration. We really tried to channel the high fashion, Jackie-O,Victoria Beckham, classic, elegant look while highlighting my height through unique lengths and sleek fits. I would send pictures to my two dress designers, Elizabeth Calderon and Debbie Carrol and let them run with ideas to create the most elegant and creative dresses. If you have seen any photos throughout my week at Mrs. America, you know they did not disappoint and created a perfect wardrobe for me. Elizabeth Calderon created my white competition dress along with other dresses I wore throughout the week, including the blush pink leaf sleeve dress, which was one of my favorites. Debbie Carrol created my sophisticated interview dress and my pre/post-pageant dresses I wore to our after party, which was catered by a new local hotspot, Plantone’s Italian Market, and delicious desserts from Nothing Bundt Cakes. I also had a few extra stunning pieces that I borrowed from Kristie Jelinsky and Amanda Kouretas (two Las Vegas fashion icons with the most incredible wardrobes and closets you will ever see). During Mrs. America, I had booked an extra room at the host hotel, the Westgate. Any downtime I had was spent with my husband and Kristie going over the next wardrobe change. We had the best time putting pieces together with coordinating jewelry to ensure that each outfit was something that not only represented me, but would also have a serious “wow” factor. I remember numerous contestants tell me that they were on the edge of their seats, waiting for me to arrive to see what I was wearing. I changed my outfit and hair styles every opportunity I could. It was fun to wear so many unique wardrobe pieces and different hairstyles throughout the week.

Q: Do you think dressing the part plays a key role in winning? I love the saying “Dress for the job you want, not the job that you have.” Dressing the part doesn’t necessarily mean that you will win, but it does mean you will look and feel incredible. It puts you on the path towards success. It is interesting how fashion really shapes how you feel, which directly translates into your attitude. Elizabeth Calderon, Debbie Carrol, and Kristie Jelinsky helped create an incredible wardrobe that left me feeling my best all week. I was at ease knowing I didn’t have to worry or think twice about what I was going to wear because every piece was somehow better than the last! I really couldn’t go wrong. Q: What has becoming Mrs. Nevada thought you along the way? Becoming Mrs. Nevada has taught me so much about myself and the incredible Las Vegas community. I have realized that more times than not, people and companies want to give back and be involved, they just don’t always know how to do that. I have had so many wonderful sponsors along the way that have donated so much of their time and resources to enhance my experience and make a difference throughout the Las Vegas community. I feel so fortunate to have them all on this journey with me. Q: What advice would you give to future pageant contestants from experience? Competing in a pageant can be one of the greatest experiences of your life. You get out of it what you put into it. Get out in the community as much as you can with your
friends and family and get involved. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity that can change your life. Live in the moment and make every moment count. And most importantly, thank those who have helped you along the way, because there are so many people behind the scenes who make everything possible. Q: What was it like to compete for Mrs. America this August here in Las Vegas? Competing in my home town of Las Vegas and in front of 70 of my favorite people was an absolute dream come true. When I made my final walk from my hotel room to the Showroom, I saw hundreds of people lined up at the door. I was wondering where my group of supporters were. I should have known, of course they were in the front of the line. They had been there 4 hours before the pageant even started, making sure they had seats right behind the judges. When I was up on stage during the pageant, not only could I hear the loudest support group there, I could see them sitting front and center. They had red, white, and blue glow sticks, posters of “Crown Our Mom” made by Cash,

Paisley, and Taj, and large blown up pictures of me. I was fortunate to have the most incredible support system of family, friends, and sponsors surrounding me. Unfortunately, I didn’t become Mrs. America 2018. My team and I gave it everything we had, finishing in the Top 6. It was heart breaking as I was hoping to become the first Mrs. Nevada to be crowned Mrs. America. Although I didn’t win the title, I still hold the most important titles of wife, mother, community servant, and Mrs. Nevada 2017. As the door for Mrs. America closed, so many more have already opened. I look forward to sharing those opportunities with my family. In 2014, my three-month-old, Taj, was admitted to Children’s Hospital due to respiratory issues. My family became residents of the Ronald McDonald House on and off for the next six months while Taj received critical medical treatment. This experience inspired me to give back to the Ronald McDonald House - an organization that once gave so much to my family during our time of need. The Ronald McDonald house is the center of a lot of my community service, including donating kitchen appliances, Easter baskets, home-cooked meals, freshly baked
cookies, collecting money for scholarship funds, speaking and running at the 5k event, and serving at the Ronald McDonald House in Rome during a family vacation. I hope to leave a legacy of positivity and show that giving back can be a fun, uplifting family affair. I truly loved every moment of this experience and am so grateful that the Marmels (David Marmel is the president of Mrs. America Inc.) made this all possible and have been celebrating married women across the country for the last 40-plus years. They put together such a fun-packed week that I wish I could relive again. The Westgate here in Las Vegas was the host hotel. The staff could not have been friendlier, the rooms couldn’t have been nicer, and the food could not have been better. Thank you to the Westgate Las Vegas for everything. One of my favorite parts of this pageant experience was meeting all these incredible women. I know that I made so many lifelong friends and look forward to watching their lives continue to blossom. Each of these women have made a profound impact on my life and I have loved learning from them throughout the week. Any married women over the age of 18 can apply at www.MrsNevadaAmerica.com. ALDO MENCATTO Defining The Way We Dress
Written by Yelena Brezhneva | Photos by Harman House Photography & Richard Anber
Designers are very visual, with great imagination and a desire to express beauty, through lines, symmetry, fabric, and color. For Brazilian fashion designer Aldo Mencatto, his love of fashion started at a very young age.
M
encatto’s mother made everything for her children — pants, shirts, clothes of all types from scratch. “My mom would sew for all 14 children in our family. She used to do everything by hand,” Mencatto said. He later took up modeling at the age of 18. “I was involved with fashion in a way, but I had no passion for what I was doing when I was modeling,” he explained. After her death, Mencatto said he took inspiration from his mother and became interested in clothing design.
40
“One day after my mom passed away, I was walking on the streets of São Paulo and I saw bright, vibrant red fabric and I got a vision of a beautiful red gown. I had no experience of designing anything; I had no idea how to sketch. I went to see my friend and told her about my vision and all the details. She created a dress, but it wasn't like I imagined— I had to make so many changes to make it closer to my vision.” Mencatto’s career took off when he made a dress for famous Brazilian actress Paloma Duarte. He quickly became a well-known designer for celebrities, actresses, singers, music bands, and

television networks. At the age of 27 he created his first collection. Then he opened his own store, and before long he had six boutique stores in Brazil selling his garments. Unfortunately, his success was short-lived when he entered into a contract with a partner. Mencatto would focus on making clothes and his associate would manage the stores and finances. His business partner sucked the company dry, Mencatto said, took everything from him and then disappeared. That's when his heart called him to America. His friends helped him to buy a ticket and with only 50 dollars in his pocket he came to Las Vegas. He found a job as a dishwasher at Denny’s. His dream of coming to US came with a big price. He always felt that America was his home and that everything had a purpose— including his loss. For two years he washed dishes, and struggled to learn English. Mencatto set to work and saved money from dish-washing to buy materials, and spent all his free time drawing sketches, and searching for the right fabric and stitching seams. His true passion was restored and he started creating again.
October 2017
But challenges didn’t stop there. In 2015, Mencatto was diagnosed with leukemia that was incurable and his time was limited. From the point of deep despair, he prayed. He asked for one more chance in life and his prayer was answered. That same week a doctor, a Chinese herbalist, gave him a treatment plan that cured him in 6 months. Mencatto has since received numerous national and local awards and recognitions. He has become vice president of the Las Vegas Fashion Design Council. He recently completed Brazilian Fashion Week in Las Vegas with a huge success. He also won Best Designer of the Year award in Florida. Mencatto hopes to bring more fashion into Las Vegas. He notes, “Las Vegas is a source of incredible inspiration for me.” You can learn more about Aldo Mencatto at mencatto.com Follow him on Instagram at aldomencattolv Article by Yelena Brezhneva Author, Mother of Three, Philanthropist, Las Vegas Personality and High-Rise Luxury Home Specialist with Sotheby’s International Realty

5Trends for Men
FASHION WEEK Written by Ossy Lahsinia-Cohen
Fall/Winter 2017-2018
With the NYC fashion week over, we wanted to share with you our favorite trends for this Fall-Winter. The fashion houses seem to agree on a major statement: We have more youthful, comfortable, and athletic trend this season.
A DOMINANT COLOR FOR A BOLD SEASON, RED! We all know that red is a power color, one we use to make a statement and this season is no less bold than just that: Red is on every runaway. Don’t be shy, try it this fall and stand out from the crowd. Dries Van Noten included stunning red pieces this season.
THE REAL SUPERSTAR WALKING UNDEFEATED: THE PADDED JACKETS Use the artistry of high-fashion houses such as Balenciaga, the padded jacket this season is oversized and explores alternative cuts to what we’ve ever seen. It is our favorite item and we can’t wait to see it in the streets. Although, Cottweiler along with Lanvin and many others bring the ski-wear on the runaway and we’re here for all of it!
42
www.HighRiseLife.com
ONE THING IS VERY CLEAR, YOU CAN LEAVE THE SKINNY SUITS BEHIND FOR THIS SEASON. We are bringing back an older business dress code, larger pants, oversized shirts, and oversized trench coats are in order. We love the confidence that it emanates while keeping a very casual look. It’s definitely an 80’s vibe and we couldn’t be more excited for this trend getting some much-needed appreciation. You can see a lot of oversized trench options this fall on the runaway from Dries Van Noten and Balenciaga.
IT SEEMS EVERYONE AGREED TO OFFER A LITTLE BIT OF FUR. The trend seems to downplay the “dramatic” effect usually associated with fur and instead explores casual designs with lighter tones and thinner tailoring, we can very easily see this star-item incorporated in any man’s wardrobe. Trendier houses like Fendi had no problem tailoring a more theatrical design and will most likely be a hit with our Hollywood male fashionistas.
About the author: Ossy Lahsinia-Cohen is an avid fashion consultant in the city of Beverly Hills, CA. His expertise in the industry of fashion came from years of learning and following his favorite designers and fashion houses. He also represents local artists and specializes in expanding the outreach of Pop Art to broader horizons. SUNRISE ORANGE CAME VERY CLOSE, AND CLASHED ON MANY RUNAWAYS. We’re delighted to see this color inspire some great designs and hope it will vitalize our days when the weather starts turning grey. Balenciaga explored this soothing shade of orange in different styles for their new collection.

Camino De Santiago … “Coast of Death”
Adventures of an Unplanned Traveler Written by Zack Hussain | Photo credit Zack Hussain
Mount Aro
Camino Day 2 38.65 km (24 miles) Negreira to Olveiroa
It is 9:00 AM and we have a late start, we procrastinated and indulged in a big breakfast, we head out of Negreira with grey skies and a slight drizzle, as we reach the outskirts we are greeted by Pazo de Cotón, a spectacular medieval palace, last night we didn’t get this far and we wish we had. We spend some time exploring the grounds and taking in its splendor and furthering the delay, we were oblivious of the long walk ahead.
T
he sun broke through finally for a few moments, our spirits are high and we enter the rugged terrain in the mountains and begin a series of steep climbs, the air is ever so moist and fresh, and the vegetation lush with amazing indigenous flora. Few hours in and it dawns on me that I have started to reflect and been having conversations in my head, I realize the magnitude of this journey and how lucky I’m to be traversing a portion of this planet on my own two feet, introducing myself to mother earth, getting to know earth, albeit just a sliver of it. A different continent, country, landscape, history, culture, a place I have never been, breathing air in a different environment, feasting my eyes on amazing scenery, this is my opportunity to understand and get to know my planet, our home. How lucky am I to be
48
doing this with my best friend, lucky to explore, lucky to travel, forge bonds, create memories and live life with absolutely no regrets. It has been raining nonstop since we left, we cover 15 km in four hours without stopping through the heavy downpour, the terrain has been daunting through the mountains and deep woods, the temperature has dropped considerably, it is cold and we finally stop in the woods at a makeshift tavern, we sit on tiny stools on dirt floor and lunch on a dry sandwich resembling something straight out of an ancient kitchen. The bread is rough unleavened, layered with ham and cheese, we had a tough time getting it down, but it was our only option. Saving grace, we found a bar of chocolate and hot coffee, it was a luxury we indulged in. As we rested, we realized we still have another 23 km to cover. We must get back on our feet, now, even though our feet are a throbbing mess. We are exhausted and the weather miserable. www.HighRiseLife.com
Terra de Xallas region in Galicia 5:00 PM - We have been walking now for 8 hours, I’m happy and enjoying the Camino, the mountains give way to farmlands and expansive meadows, livestock in abundance grazing freely under blue skies with sumptuous grazing. We have not encountered a lot of fellow walkers, just the two of us in solitude on long stretches of country roads with plenty of time to reflect. We come across many tiny charming villages, one thing that stood out was, they all had unique granaries that are from the medieval ages and still in use. The architecture and detailed embellishment of these granaries depicted the wealth of the household. We come to rest our feet in such a tiny village, sitting under a cruceiro with the evening sun on our faces we believed we had just a couple more hours of walking, but were we wrong? At this stage, we cannot feel our feet, the thought of taking another step is arduous, exhaustion has set in, but we need to get up and get going right now before we start losing light. 6:30 PM - Nine and half hours of walking and we begin to ascend Mount Aro at an altitude of 1900 feet, by no stretch of imagination was this day done. The summit unfolds an incredible vista of the expansive Terra de Xallas region in Galicia. The view is incredible, but my mind is numb, I fight my senses to comprehend what I’m seeing and my body does not co-operate. We take a breather, the wind cuts through us like a knife, the agony of our bodies dulls the beautiful visage, we continue and start descending the mountain hoping our pit stop is down below. 7:30 PM - Ten and half hours since we started this morning, no village, not a soul in sight, we have not encountered another human now for hours, the feet are moving on their own, we are beyond exhausted, I curl my toes inside my shoes to relieve the pressure, Valerio is lagging, I slow my pace for him to catch up, he doesn't look
October 2017
happy. He discloses that he has a torn meniscus from a previous injury and now he is paying for his folly, his knee is not cooperating. We cannot stop, we need to keep moving, if we rest our muscles will lock down, we need to maintain movement and keep our muscles warm, yet Valerio stops by the road side, discards his backpack and removes his shoes and collapses on a stone wall. I see the grim resignation on his face, he is in pain, I’m in pain, but we cannot speak of it. I reluctantly follow suit and put down my backpack. We are disheartened, we have no idea how much further we must go and we are in the middle of nowhere. After the very brief rest, we get back on our feet and start walking again, our GPS cannot tell us how far the destination is, it displays the distance we have covered and the speed of our pace, as the day turned into late evening, our pace had slowed considerably and we are struggling. We see endless stretches of road ahead, solitude, private thoughts and the sound of our own footsteps. 8:30 PM and it is still light outside, eleven and half hours of walking has taken a serious toll on us physically. I have never experienced pain like this, I’m learning new things about my feet, my mind, my resolve, my fortitude and myself. Finally, through it all we come across a sign announcing the village and our final pitstop but it is still 3.5 km away. We find billboards for hotels and albergues along the way and we place a call to reserve the hotel. 9:30 PM ushers in the village of Olveiroa and our hotel. It took us twelve and half hours to cover 38.65 km, completely famished and beyond exhausted we make a beeline to the restaurant and after a hearty meal we take stock of our wellbeing. Valerio thinks he can’t continue the next day, we sleep, we just need to sleep and tomorrow is another day. Is our Camino over?
49
Camino Day 3 36.02 km (22.4 miles) Olveiroa to Finisterre 8:00AM finds us fresh and completely rejuvenated, it is amazing what 8 hours of sound sleep and a good meal can do. Last night we thought today would be impossible, but our bodies have recovered and we have new energy, new resolve and determination to make it. We slightly alter our plan, given the toll our bodies took yesterday; we eliminate an entire day and 32.5 km to Muxía and instead decided to go straight to Fisterra. Our strategy this morning is to cover as much ground as possible, while we were fresh and have energy reserves, no stops, no rest, just walk. With the final destination mapped out, we begin in earnest, the day is beautiful with sunshine and blue skies. Leaving Olveiroa we find ourselves back in mountainous terrain over ridges, ravines and valleys, the terrain is extremely difficult with no straight paths, we hobble through boulders and rocks and the ankles start taking a beating immediately. We cover 16 km in three and half hours and finally see a faint glimpse of the Atlantic over the horizon, we are amazed how our body is responding, psychologically we are in a different place, just 12 hours ago we thought we could not make it. Our feet are still miserable, intense pain rakes through our entire body, but our mind is amazingly strong. We cover a total of 20 km before lunch as we reach the coastal town of Corcubión. We find a tavern as soon as we enter town, we take this opportunity to rest our feet. Over the next hour we devour multiple bowls of lentil soup, bocadillo sandwiches, Santiago cake and copious amounts of coffee. Over lunch we meet many fellow travelers, we exchange travel stories and make new friends. We set out after lunch knowing we have another 15 km to walk to our destination and if we maintain a steady pace that would be another 4
50
hours of walking, if yesterday was any indication, we were looking to avoid that scenario. However, nothing goes as planned, as we got into the heart of Corcubión, we found the town to be very endearing and beautiful, great architecture and the beautiful sunny coast kept us engaged, we whiled away a good portion of the afternoon enjoying the town.
End of the World
Finisterre
Leaving Corcubión we thought we would be walking the rest of the Camino along the coast, our hopes were dashed as the route took us back up into the mountains, the climb was extremely steep and I was starting to hate anything uphill. Climbing at this stage had become the bane of my existence, every ounce in the backpack was starting to come into play, every muscle ached and screamed, but every step took us closer to our destination. To forget the pain, Valerio taught me a few Italian songs and we sang in unison as we walked, my favorite was “mi fa volare” which literally translates to “it makes me fly” and we were flying towards our destination. Many twist and turns later we dramatically approach an opening in the woods, and laid before our eyes was the brilliant Atlantic, we begin our decent to the coast and realize our spirit are soaring, we can see in the far distant the cape of Finisterre. The coast line is spectacular, jagged cliffs with brilliant white sand beach below hastens our pace, we forget our pains, we are amazed at our newfound energy and clarity of mind as our destination reveals itself. We have now walked 30 kms, almost the equivalent distance of what we did yesterday, however our mindset is completely the opposite. It was a teachable moment for us, we realized yet again how important our outlook and positive attitude is. We project our own internal conflicts to the outside world and believe that is how the world is, while mostly it is us, the situation we see is never what it seems.

7:40 PM and almost twelve hours after we left Olveiroa we arrive at the spectacular crescent shaped Langosteira beach with its brilliant white sand and azure waters and decide to abandon the traditional trail and cover the next 6 km walking on the beach to the mythical city center of Finisterre. As soon as our feet touched the sand, it was euphoric, a wave of emotion washed over us, the accomplishment of what we have just achieved was invaluable, especially for a couple of novices who have never attempted such an endeavor. A sudden storm hits us as we walked along the beach, it was symbolic, washing away our pains, worries, stress and cleansing us of all our earthly burdens, we walk together, brothers in arms, reflecting on what we are capable of and how much there is to live for and to do. We felt lucky and alive. We made it.
Finisterre
Coast of Death
Finisterre derives from the Latin name Finis Terrae, which literally means "End of the Land.” Finisterre is a rocky peninsula, and it is the end of the “Camino.” As a seaside town, the gastronomy here is incredible with amazing fresh fish, seafood, and Galician delicacies. Walking along its streets we could clearly feel the spirit of a fishing town and its ancient past. The following day we covered an additional 10 km to the Cape Finisterre Lighthouse (Faro de Cabo Finisterre) situated on Monte Facho. The 0 Km marker ended our 90 Km journey which started as an adventure, but somewhere along the way became spiritual. We had no religious or spiritual reason to do this Camino, but the experience changed us, we were not the same as when we started.
Langosteira beach in Finisterre Valerio and I found our own separates spots along the edge of a cliff. As the sun began to set on the coast of death, it reminded me of how small our place is in this world and yet how big of an impact we can make. We will be long gone as have people from our ancient past, yet the planet remains and will continue to do for all the other generations to come, the question was, how will we leave this place for the other generations who will follow in our footsteps. Off the Beaten Path Joshua Tree National Park Written by Francesca Maria
Hello readers and happy October! This month I am sharing with you a place close to my heart. I grew up in the high desert of California, and Joshua Tree National Park was my closest neighbor. I have hiked every trail, and climbed every rock. I swam in the small lakes of water after big rain storms, and had hundreds of picnics with family and friends. I taught my kids how to camp and climb rocks in this park. I drank the water that comes up out of the springs at the oasis found in the middle of the desert, that you can hike to on a hiking trail. The memories I store from the years I lived out there are the most pleasant of all. I urge anyone who loves nature, to take a trip there and create some memories of your own.

J
oshua Tree National Park sets aside nearly 800,000 acres of the gorgeous Mojave Desert, to protect the unique assembly of natural resources brought together by the junction of three of California’s vital ecosystems:
The Colorado Desert, a western extension of the vast Sonoran Desert, occupies the southern and eastern parts of the park. The southern boundary of the Mojave Desert reaches across the northern part of the park. Joshua Tree’s third ecosystem is in the westernmost part of the park above 4,000 feet: The Little San Bernardino Mountains.
Although the rock formations seem to be the focal point of this geographical location, I must say that the plant diversity of the three ecosystems (listed above) is matched by the animal diversity, including healthy herds of desert bighorn and six species of rattlesnakes, along with every other desert animal, mammal and reptile. You will be captivated by the dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California. The park’s name came from the Joshua Tree “Yucca brevifoli,” which is a member of the Agave family. Yes, Agave, what Tequila is made from. Until very recently, it was once considered a giant member of the Lily family. Don’t confuse the Joshua tree with the Mojave yucca “Yucca Schidigera,” which is a close relative and can be distinguished by its longer, wider leaves and of course the height. Both types grow together in harmony and are both numerous in the park. Some Joshua Trees in the park are over 150 to 200 years old. This tree's height can range from 20 to 70 feet, and its trunk diameter can range from 1 to 3 feet, providing shelter to birds and small critters. When you see them, that is a good indicator that you are in the Mojave Desert, but you may also find them growing next to a saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert in western Arizona or mixed with pines in the San Bernardino Mountains. Altitude plays a large role in where these trees will grow and thrive. Legend has it that early pioneers named the tree after the biblical figure, Joshua, seeing the limbs of the tree as outstretched in supplication, guiding the travelers westward towards their dreams of finding gold and raising cattle. The trees were also highly revered by the Indian tribes who used them for various sources. As Vegetation Specialist Jane Rodgers says, “You may be at ease with pine or hardwood, or find shade under the domesticated trees in your city park, but in the high desert, Joshua is our tree. It is an important part of the Mojave Desert ecosystem, providing habitat for numerous birds, mammals, insects, and lizards. Joshua tree forests tell a story of survival, resilience, and beauty borne through perseverance. They are the silhouette that reminds those of us who live here that we are home." The easiest way to get to the Joshua Tree National Park is from the park entrance in 29 Palms, California. You can also get there from Hwy 10. West Coast Real Estate MarketTrends Written by Yelena Brezhneva
LAS VEGAS Las Vegas real estate market was hot this August. We have seen the most million-dollar transactions, since February 2008. We can say that Luxury market is rocking. When we look at real estate market, we should understand that the market trends change based on price point, as I’ve shown in my previous reports. For example, in the market, homes under $250,000 are still experiencing high demand. Market also shows changes based on area and zip code as seen in graph below. Foreclosure inventory is still shrinking with only about 4.5 percent of listed properties being a distressed sale. Las Vegas is still a popular place for flipping. Atom Data Solutions reports indicated that Las
62
Vegas flippers earned average $55,600 with return on investment of 35.8 percent. National average is 67,516 with return of 48.4 percent. (Profits were estimated after the purchase price was subtracted from the sale price and doesn’t include remodeling costs.) Homes that are ten years old and are upgraded now look quite standard. Resale is competing with new homes in the range of $250,000 and above, which are coming with more interesting floor plans, upgraded cabinets and appliances. We are still experiencing shortage of inventory, as you will see we have less new listings and less active listings. If you are looking to sell it’s def initely a good time to re-evaluate your home price.
