D-ZYN CORNER Late Summer Inspiration
Written by Carol Townsend A.S.I.D. Interior Designer
Every season is a great season for showing off your beautiful home. Now that the weather is slowly cooling off, we can take a step back, take a breath in, and marvel at the late summer sunrise and sunset. I was just reading one of my latest design magazines and a headline caught my attention. It said: “Designs with you in mind.” Okay, you say, what grabbed your attention? Shouldn’t every design in my home be built with me in mind? Some designers wish to create a space that will have their own personality written all over it. When I am hired to work with someone, I do an in-depth front interview with my client, to assess their needs, personalities, and design traits.
12
HIGHRISELIFE.COM
Then and only then will I take on the project. The mission is to give you a home that you absolutely love to come home to. What I want is not relevant, unless you ask my opinion one way or the other. Then I will give you pros and cons, but you are the final decision maker in this process. Let’s look at the late evening sky as a great example. Is tonight’s sunset going to be the exact same as last night? The beauty is, depending on what temperatures have been going on in the stratosphere, we get a different look each night. You are as different from your neighbor as each sunset we enjoy is, but we can play with the colors from our sunrises and sunsets to put some extraordinary colors in your home.

StageThis Interior Design Having been a hands-on designer since I was seven, I love fabrics. I can be a kid in a candy store when I walk through a fabric showroom. I find so many unusual pieces when I am on a stroll. Taking this concept, if you find something stunning; you can incorporate it into a stretched canvas piece on the wall, create a hand quilted throw for the couch, or use it as table linens in your dining room. The dining room is sometimes too big, and sometimes too small. You could add the color of the fabric as a backdrop on your serving piece wall, then coordinate table linens from the artwork of the fabric. Sometimes a small intimate space suddenly feels larger with a vibrant large print on the wall. I had a dear friend who at one time was the art director for J.C. Penney Co. What is an art director? It is the boss of the bosses for the display departments throughout a region. This man who was short in stature was tall on talent.
He used to call me and say, "Carol! We need to go shop in your showroom for just the right look I want for this season’s displays." He was the first person who taught me, by example, to look at my beloved fabrics from a different perspective. To say this guy loved color and art more than myself was an understatement. He would keep extra pieces of 4x8 plywood around to create walls in the fabric he found in my stock. Years later when I found myself designing showrooms for some of the biggest names in furniture, I would revert to what he taught me, shamelessly. You bought your home because you fell in love with the city views. Get excited by having your friends over for a late summer’s eve meal in a dining room that revolves around the season’s color pallet. So, let’s grab this late summer by the colorful fabrics offered in our local stores, and let’s get living!

Soccer Kicks Written by Melanie Heuberg | Photo credit www.complex.com
When it comes to fancy footwork, soccer players have footballers outrivaled, but what about when it comes to fancy footwear? International soccer star Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior was recently featured on Complex Networks’ latest episode of Sneaker Shopping with Joe La Puma and spent a record-breaking $18,623.44 on new sneakers.
I
n the episode, which can be viewed on complex.com, Neymar visits Los Angeles’ sneaker shop Fight Club to talk about the importance of sneakers as a fashion staple from his upbringing to uprising as a soccer sensation. Neymar grew up in Brazil where the options for sneakers were limited. As a child, he exhausted his only pair of Jordan’s while playing soccer at school. Neymar wore his Jordan’s proudly, despite the numerous holes amassed from overuse. Eventually, Neymar had to retire his favorite kicks, but his original fashion sense and soccer stardom allotted him a partnership with Team Jordan where he created his own signature pair and also met Michael Jordan. “It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I was shaking when I met him," Neymar recalled.
Neymar has had his fair share of celebrity meet-ups with sports stars and pop culture icons. Neymar recently played a match of soccer with teen heartthrob Justin Bieber. “He plays well. I was a little surprised... maybe he could play professionally," Neymar explained. He also chatted with Odell Beckham Jr., both of whom signed deals with Nike. Regarding Odell, Neymar noted, "Odell is a great person, a great player. I really admire him." Yet, Neymar’s fashion sense doesn’t correlate to either icon. When asked which sports star’s sneakers were his favorite, Neymar chose a pair of Nike LeBron 11 Elite SE’s, a flashy red pair with golden accents. However, Neymar doesn’t regard his style as flashy, but rather unique. So unique, that his teammates often times tease him. Prior to a match, Neymar’s teammates saw him wearing a pair of Supreme x Nike Air More Uptempo’s; a pair of thick golden high-tops. His teammates threw his shoes in the bath, while he was in the changing room. "I wanted to kill them because I really liked the sneakers," Neymar laughed. He takes his clothing seriously and even has an on-field fashion competition with fellow soccer player and friend Lionel Messi. The two often throw punches regarding the attractiveness of one another’s cleats. "When they look good we say, 'You did well this time.’”

Exclusive Interview
Coach Gerard Gallant Vegas Golden Knights
Written by Selcen Kavruklar, Editor-in-Chief | Photo credit Vegas Golden Knights
There is a lot of excitement in the air in the world of hockey as the new expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights, prepare to debut their 2017-18 season this October. As NHL history unravels itself in Las Vegas, we have Coach Gerard Gallant getting the team geared up for game time.
G
allant, better known as “Turk,” brings a lot of experience to the game. Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, his passion for hockey started at a young age. Gallant played 11 NHL seasons for Detroit from 1984-1993 and Tampa Bay from 1993-1995 with his most successful year in 1988-1989, when he was selected as a NHL Second Team All-Star. “As a former player, I feel I can connect with my team on a different level,” noted Gallant.

He began his coaching career in 19951996 with the Summerside Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League leading the team to the Royal Bank Cup in 1997 and served as the head coach of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2009-2012. Later, he became assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens from 2012-2014. Gallant was rewarded Canadian Hockey League Coach of the Year twice in 2010 and 2011.

At the international level, Gallant served as part of Team Canada's Gold Medal-winning coaching staff at the 2007 IIHF World Championship and was recently named to Team Canada's coaching staff for the upcoming 2017 World Championship. Gallant joined the Golden Knights after his most recent head coach position with the Florida Panthers, where he guided the Panthers to a 25-point improvement from the previous season. In his second season, Gallant helped lead the Panthers to a firstplace regular season finish in the Atlantic Division and was awarded Jack Adams finalist (coach of the year) for his efforts. It might be too soon to predict playoffs for the Vegas Golden Knights, as the expansion team builds stamina. Per Gallant, "As coach, you can't look long-term; you just have to look at the next day and get better every day. We are going to work hard, we are going to build a strong organization, a strong hockey team here in Las Vegas.” One thing is for sure, Gallant's experience can help

navigate the team to victory. “I've been involved in an expansion team before with Columbus and it was a great experience, and I'm looking forward to the same thing here.” There is a lot of preparation ahead for the Vegas Golden Knights as preseason games start early this month. “We're going to have a great hockey team and I think the fans are going to be very excited to see our product,” said Gallant. olden Knights are becoming an integral part of our Golden City! Las Vegas is thrilled and excited to welcome its first hockey team as it attracts hockey fans from all over the country. “The most successful teams always embrace the identity of the city where they play. Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world, and expectations come with playing here. People are expecting us to be different— they expect a big show. I think when you go to a Golden Knights game you’re going to walk away, regardless of a win or loss— saying that it was a great experience and you want to go back,” said Eric Tosi, Vice President of Communications & Content for Vegas Golden Knights. T-Mobile Arena is the new home for Vegas Golden Knights. Conveniently located at the heart of Las Vegas Boulevard, fans will be able to watch live hockey games and then stroll around the strip surrounded by world-class restaurants, bars, and entertainment all within walking distance. T-Mobile Arena literally has no bad seats; no matter where you sit, you'll be able to enjoy the game. Tosi was pleased to note that their local TV partner ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain HD and AT&T SportsNet will be broadcasting and livestreaming all the games in high-defintion. Back in the day, we used to watch hockey on black and white screens and could barely follow the puck. That's where the skill of a commentator would come into play and you learned to appreciate the ability to share the spectacular fast paced action as it unfolded with enthusiasm. Today, we are able to enjoy the hockey game in high-definition and in color with a great crew of commentators. Kerry Bubolz, Vegas Golden Knights President, welcomed Dave Goucher as a first Golden Knights TV announcer, Shane Hnidy as TV commentator, and Dan D'Uva as teams radio announcer. For full coverage, tune into radio FOX Sports 98.9 FM/1340 AM. Broadcasts are promising to be fun and sharp, based on the extensive professional hockey experience of these brilliant individuals.

With about 82 games scheduled over the span of 7 months with 2-3 games per week, it will have an impact on our community. Locals might stress due to potential of having more traffic. In response to this, Tosi reassured that they are in contact with MGM, T-Mobile Arena, and local Transit Authorities to coordinate alternate ways to direct traffic. On a good note, most of the MGM properties are within walking distance. There is also a possibility of a shuttle leaving from Red Rock Hotel and Casino in Summerlin and transporting fans directly to the Arena. “We understand everyones concerns, and are listening and planning diligently to make it an enjoyable experience — because that's what ultimately matters,” explained Tosi. The Vegas Golden Knights practice facility which has been branded City National Arena, located next to Red Rock Casino in Summerlin, is expected to cost between $25 million to $30 million. The team will start training camp on September 8th. The 146,000-square-foot facility with two NHL ice rinks,
will boast a slew of amenities from players lounge, team locker rooms with showers and sauna, and massage rooms to accommodate the team. The stateof-the-art facility will start with two practice sessions per day for the team. Morning practice will be starting at 10:30am in the morning. Evening sessions will be for other half of the players. Schedules will vary from week to week and from month to month. City National Arena will serve the community at large and will open its state-of-the-art facility to all of Las Vegas to enjoy. It will host youth hockey leagues and UNLV hockey, in addition to the Golden Knights. “The fun part about working here is the excitement and the enterprenual spirit that comes along with it. Everybody embraces the amount of work and knows there is going to be long hours and there will be some challenges along the way, but we will make it an amazing experience,” said Tosi. Make sure to come out and support the team! September

How To Prevent and Manage Sport Related Injuries Written by Pouya Mohajer, M.D.
F
or as long as there has been the desire to win, there has been sports related injuries. Whether one is a highly-trained athlete or a weekend warrior, injuries have plagued us all. It is virtually impossible to prevent all sports related injuries; however, one can at least reduce some injuries by following a few simple techniques. An overview of some of the more common injuries will be discussed followed by preventive techniques and finally treatment options.
One simple classification is to categorize injuries as traumatic or repetitive. Traumatic injuries include contusion (bruise), strain, sprain, concussion, and fractures. Overuse injuries mainly involve epicondylitis (tennis/golf elbow) and runner’s knee (pain behind the kneecap). The most common injuries in competitive sports involve sprains and strains. Sprains are injuries to ligaments, which are a short band of flexible, yet strong fibrous connective tissue that attach two bones together. Over stretching of ligaments past their maximum capacity can cause tears or deformity, which leads to damage and subsequent injury. Strains on the other hand affect muscle fibers and/or tendons. Tendons are a tough band of
26

connective tissue that connect muscle to bone. Excessive extending or overuse of a muscle can lead to tears in the muscle fibers or tendons, which can cause injury. COMMON INJURIES Some of the more common injuries include joint injuries and pulled muscles. Knee injuries are among the most common injuries. The injuries vary from patellofemoral syndrome or runner’s knee (pain behind the kneecap) to damage to ligaments such as the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Another common injury is the ankle sprain where the foot turns inward. This motion can stretch or even tear the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. This can lead to pain, swelling, and bruising. In severe cases,
one will not be able to apply weight to the joint. Several muscle groups are typically affected with pulled muscle injuries. Groin pull occurs with a sideto-side motion causing strain of the inner thigh muscles. Hamstring strain can be quite painful and take a long time to heal. Shin splints typically affects the inner side of the tibia (shinbone) secondary to inflammation of the muscle surrounding the tibia. Finally, elbow injury secondary to repetitive motion as seen with tennis or golf. Tennis elbow tends to be more on the outside of the elbow while golf elbow affects the inside more than then outside. PREVENTION There are several simple techniques that will reduce the incidence of sports related injuries. Warm-up and stretching

exercises are utilized to prepare for a subsequent strenuous workout. Preparatory warm-up increases body temperature. The increase in body temperature causes several physiological responses. An elevation in body temperature allows easier release of oxygen from hemoglobin and myoglobin, the oxygen carrying proteins in the blood and muscles, respectively; increase blood flow to muscles, which enhances delivery of substrates and removal of metabolic byproducts; reduction in muscle viscosity (muscles contract and relax faster thus improving power output efficiency); lowers the critical level at which metabolic reactions occur (acceleration of the metabolic rate); increase in the sensitivity of nerve receptors (augmentation of the nervous system); and increase in velocity of nerve impulses (helps with coordination of rapidly moving body parts). All these physiological changes reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal sports related injuries. Furthermore, warming-up the specific muscles that will be utilized subsequently during the strenuous exercise, will also reduce chances of injury since this type of warm-up provides a rehearsal of the physical activity to come. How does warming up prevent injury?
Muscle elasticity is dependent on blood saturation. Thus, cold muscles with a low blood saturation are more susceptible to injury or damage than muscles at higher temperatures and higher blood flow. Higher temperatures increase the capability of ligaments and tendons to stretch which increases joint range of motion. The benefits of stretching are a bit more controversial. Some studies assert stretching is beneficial, others claim it does not provide any advantage, and some conclude it can cause some harm. Consensus is that stretching improves flexibility which can lead to improved physical performance. Flexibility can also help reduce injuries to the musculoskeletal system. TREATMENT If an injury occurs what can be done? Primarily, serious injuries need to be evaluated by a physician. If an injury appears deformed, there is excessive swelling or bruising, or extreme pain, then an evaluation is warranted. For most other injuries, during the first 48 hours, apply ice. Ice is typically placed in an insulating material and applied for 20 minutes of each hour. Over the counter medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDs) tend to help with the acute inflammatory process that occurs immediately after an injury. Compression with elastic bandage and elevation of the injured site can reduce swelling. For continued persistent pain and disability, one should consult with a physician. Physical therapy can aid in recovery from an injury. Through physical therapy one can reduce pain secondary to soft tissue injury such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons; improve range of motion; build muscle strength; improve flexibility and function. A physical therapist can evaluate how one performs an activity and make suggestions to improve how the activity is performed and help lessen the likelihood of an injury. For certain injuries, muscle relaxants may be prescribed. Opioids are not typically prescribed unless there is severe injury such as a fracture. Sports are the most common activities people engage in. To continue a lifelong relationship with sports, a few simple exercises such as warming up and stretching can help reduce the incidence of injury.

9 Things to KnowAbout Fitness Technology Tools Written by Sarah Walls | Sources Frontiers in Public Health
Those looking to get and stay fit may need to look no further than their smartphone, desktop computer, or wrist. The many apps, wearables, and online fitness programs that are available today are helping to motivate people to get off the couch and start getting physical.
However, most people don’t know much about them. The more they know about f itness technology tools, the better they will be able to choose one that will fit their lifestyle and goals. “The right fitness tool has the potential to be a virtual coach right at your fingertips,” explains Coach Sarah Walls, personal trainer, and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc., who is also the strength and conditioning coach for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. “An effective app, wearable or online program will give the ability to tailor your program to suit your needs, provide you with a variety of ways to meet your goals, and help you accurately track your progress.” Coach Walls, who developed her own fitness app that allows her to provide clients with customized training plans and videos, offers these 9 things to know about fitness apps/tools: 1. Apps have come a long way, now allowing individuals to get specific and customized training plans within minutes. 2. Individualized training plans are essential in maximizing progress and limiting injuries. 3. Programs such as hers allow for an individually tailored training plan at a fraction of the cost of a personal trainer. 4. Some training plan generators even consider injury history and training age to give the perfect fit. People do not have to try and rely upon generic training plans or those that are not a good fit for them. 5. The best training plan is one that the trainee will do. Training plans that are a good fit are more likely to be completed.

6. Wearable tech products like the Fitbit, Apple Watch, Polar, and Garmin are allowing everyday exercisers to have a dashboard to their body at an incredibly affordable price. 7. These products help individuals f ine-tune their training to what their bodies need that day- this can prevent overtraining and injuries. 8. If properly interpreted, heart rate monitors and apps that track sleep can show possible signs of an individual who may be getting sick or is at risk of overtraining. 9. With the notifications and gentle reminders to "stand up" or reach the "move goal" for the day, these devices can be very effective in helping people stay more consistently active. “With all the technology available today, it’s a great time to get serious about fitness and activity goals,” added Coach Walls. “The key to success with exercise tools is to make sure that you are using one that can be customized to suit your needs. One size does not fit all when it comes to fitness goals. The right program will be a great tool to help you achieve success and reach your goals.” Sarah Walls has over 15 year’s experience in coaching and personal training. Owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc, founded in 2007, she offers coaching to develop athletes, adult programs, team training, online coaching programs, and more. She is also the strength and conditioning coach for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, and has over eight years of experience working as an NCAA D1 strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer. Tone It Up Written by Melanie Heuberg | Photo credit Wave Break Media
Raise, resist, stretch, and repeat; these four words embody what it takes to secure a toned body utilizing cardio to raise the heart rate and burn fat, resistance training to build muscle, and daily repetition until the desired sculpt is achieved. So, work hard to gain control over your physique and tone up with the following pointers.
40
HIGHRISELIFE.COM
MEDICINE BALL WEIGHT TRAINING Get to the core of your routine by twisting and turning with a medicine ball. Like dumbbells, medicine balls can be worked into a cardio routine; however, they’ll have a greater effect on your torso. Warm up and prepare for at least 8 to 10 repetitions of the following exercises. For a fun twist to your normal regime, perform woodchoppers. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and
raise the medicine ball diagonally. Twist and carry the medicine ball downwards in one fell swoop before rising again. Be sure to work both sides of the body. Medicine ball crunches are another popular workout. Lie flat in an L-shape with your legs raised at a 90-degree angle and arms extended past your head while holding firmly onto
the medicine ball. Lift your body and reach towards your legs with the ball in hand. Perform these exercises at least three days in a row per week for the best results.

DUMBBELL CARDIO WORKOUT The key to a toned body is muscle visibility. Muscles are only apparent where fat is minimal, so incorporating dumbbell exercises into your favorite cardio routine is an effective measure to simultaneously shred unwanted pounds and replace them with muscle mass. Dumbbell squats work the entire body, but you’ll most likely feel their effects in your core, glutes, and hamstrings.
42
HIGHRISELIFE.COM
To perform squats with dumbbells, stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart, arms extended, and palms facing inwards. Bend your knees and push your hips back; make sure that your elbows remain straight. Next, thrust upwards and return to your starting position. Within a cardio workout, perform at least 3 sets of 10 repetition squats with dumbbells.
PLANK POSE Many beginners like the plank pose because it leads to more complex postures. To enter the plank pose, start on your knees with your hands pressed flat and elbows straight. Next, lift onto your toes so that your body is lifted at a straight angle. You can also
perform a side plank by resting on one elbow with the same arm pointed outwards at a 90-degree angle. For additional strength training, add weights and hold the pose for 30 seconds to one minute.

Camino De Santiago …
Starting Point of the Camino
“Along the Way”
O
Adventures of an Unplanned Traveler Written by Zack Hussain | Photo credit Zack Hussain
verhead loud speakers at Gate E-34, Terminal 3, at the Fiumicino Airport in Rome came alive announcing last boarding call for Iberia flight to Madrid, in the adjacent lounge. Valerio and I hurriedly grabbed our backpacks and continued to pour over our phones, taking advantage of the free airport wi-fi and feverishly scouring articles for our unplanned trip ahead.
46
A week ago in Rome, Valerio informed me that our planned and paid rendezvous to Mykonos was not going to happen and we should decide on a new destination. After the initial shock wore off, I became excited about prospecting a new adventure. Over the next few days and after many destinations were floated and shot down, “Camino De Santiago” was on the table. I had never heard of it, but after I was told that we would walk around 125 km over 5 days through north-west Spain, I was in.
The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes across Europe coming together at the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in the Galicia region of north-west Spain. Unlike the two of us, every year hundreds of thousands of people of various backgrounds walk the Camino de Santiago. On a whim, having never done anything like this before, we decided upon it without knowing which route we were going to take and the plane had just touchdown in Madrid.
As we hurried through the vestibule to board the aircraft, we were still not sure of our destination. We were landing in Santiago de Compostela in a few hours after our connection in Madrid, but we still needed to figure out a route to begin our “Camino.”
Flight delay in Madrid gave us just enough time to decide on a route: we would do the extension to Camino De Santiago and walk to the Atlantic Coast, along the Finisterre Way or Camino de Fisterra, to the ‘End of the World’! This Camino de Santiago route is unique, as it is the only one starting in
HIGHRISELIFE.COM
Along the Way Santiago de Compostela. This Camino route pre-dates Christianity, as pagans would head to Fisterra on to the Costa da Morte (Coast of Death) where the pre-Roman people believed the sun died, the worlds of the dead and the living became closer and souls ascended to heaven. Until the end of the Middle Ages, the Costa da Morte was the last outpost in the known world. We had our plan and our Camino. This was going to be a great adventure! Focused completely on the walk over the next few days, we landed in Santiago de Compostela. I had no idea what to expect as this was not on my radar; I was not prepared, I had not visualized, and I was a blank canvas ready to throw colors of experience on it.
Plaza de la Inmaculada
As we entered the old town, I was awestruck; the granite stoned arcaded streets are frozen in time, everything was pristine and the medieval town grasped me in its ancient embrace. The predominantly worn stone structures have an aged patina that speaks of eons of mankind that has grazed its surfaces. In the quest to find the tourism office to gather pertinent information for our route to Finisterre, we lost track of direction as the narrow alleys pulled us in and we stumbled into Plaza de las Platerías; our eyes could not believe the soaring Romanesque Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in front of us. To truly appreciate this cathedral where St James, one of the twelve apostles, is supposedly buried, you will have to navigate the vast complex via three major plazas, each unique and spectacular.
Plaza do Obradoiro is the main square of Santiago de Compostela old town and gives you the main facade of the cathedral with a very expansive square overlooking the university and the town’s roof tops. My favorite is the Plaza de la Inmaculada which is bordered by the Monastery of San Martiño Pinario and the Cathedral´s North facade. The Cathedral´s original North facade is described in the 12th-century Codex Calixtinus as the `Door of Paradise,´ not only because of its beauty, but also because it represented the story of Adam and Eve, the original sin and redemption. The plaza has beautiful manicured gardens and a festive atmosphere- a great place to relax, watch people and take in the magnificent Romanesque, baroque and neoclassical architectural details of the cathedral and the seminary. Plaza das Praterías is surrounded by museums, bars, restaurants, and the south facade and entrance to the cathedral. It is packed with tourists and one of the must stops. Santiago de Compostela is most beautiful when it rains as the whole town and the granite stoned streets glisten. It rains quite often in these parts so you will most definitely witness this magical transformation when you are here. We spent the rest of the evening exploring the medieval town- it was breathtaking in its ancient splendor and we were awestruck. Knowing very well the next few days will be on the road with no expectations of good food, we went well past midnight eating Spanish tapas and paella in local taverns and imbibing to our hearts content on sangria and Spanish wines. Tomorrow we start walking!

Camino Day 1 25.7 km (16 miles) Santiago de Compostela Negreira
It was still dark outside, my internal clock had beaten my phone alarm set for 5:00 AM by a few minutes. I saw Valerio was also up by the soft glow from his phone's screen lighting his face, we acknowledged each other’s presence and without missing a beat, go about getting ready for the adventure ahead. 6:00 AM: A fine drizzle greeted us, the sky was overcast, the street lights cast a warm orange glow on the wet cobblestones as dawn breaks over the horizon. We decided to put our ponchos on to stay dry, and we took our first steps. This was all new to me, my mind raced with excitement; I’m not a runner but I love to walk, I get a walker’s high just like the runners. The most I have walked nonstop is for a couple of hours, but to walk over 100 km for the next 5 days? What does that entail? How do you go about it? I’m not a hiker nor a backpacker, and I have never backpacked anywhere. I do like my basic luxuries when I travel; however, I was carrying a backpack with just the bare necessities. We had a complete medical kit, a couple of t-shirts, walking sticks, blanket, socks, a wash cloth and 2-liter water bag each. What happens when we are in the middle of nowhere? Are there any stops along the way? Will there be any help if we need any? So many unknowns and so many questions. I heard Valerio’s rhythmic footsteps ahead of me on the wet cobble stones in the still of the morning and I snapped back to reality. The excitement of the adventure was too great to worry about inane details and I found my footsteps matching his. A short distance just on the outskirts of town, we found a cafe with warm croissants, eggs, and a couple of black coffees to put us back on our feet as
48
HIGHRISELIFE.COM
Red-Tiled Rooftops of Santiago De Compostela we left Santiago de Compostela. We found ourselves rather quickly in the woods and on the trail, with the symbol of the Camino de Santiago- a scallop shell- placed strategically and frequently along the trails. The shell is seen on posts and signs along the Camino to guide pilgrims along the way. The next 8 km over a couple of hours took us through mountains, deep woods, and pueblos (tiny villages with clusters of homes). The air was crisp and fragrant as we inhaled loads of it, filling our lungs as we reached a crest overlooking the town we left behind; we could see the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela far beyond in the morning haze as the sun broke through the clouds.
Ponte Maceria We continued walking through mountains, fields, crops, and more tiny villages. The scenery is lush, resplendent in vegetation, with hydrangeas growing wild everywhere, adding additional accents to the otherwise brilliant scenery all around. Halfway through the journey, we stopped at a wayside tavern in the middle of nowhere and come across a few fellow walkers- it was our first glimpse of the others partaking in the same journey. We exchanged pleasantries and then lunched on bocadillos, Spanish omelettes and pasta salad, finishing off with a stiff espresso. As we got ready to leave, we experienced our first muscle fatigue: the hour-long rest had completely locked our muscles which I had never experienced before, and it was something we would struggle with throughout the journey. As we left the tavern, we heard the words “Buon Camino” from the owners and other patrons. It filled our hearts with gratitude and gave us strength, as we would hear these words throughout our journey and it became a standard greeting. Within minutes, the weather took a turn for the worst; heavy rains and wind gusts would last the rest of the day, and we adapted to walking in the rain as we can’t stop- there was no stopping. We continued in the rain pushing through the rugged terrain and steep climbs through deep, lush woody trails. As we moved into the afternoon, we could feel our feet voicing their objection. New pains, new experiences. Along the way, we noticed a small statured lady walking alone. We caught up with her and realized that she was probably pushing in her 80s, soft tuft of white hair neatly tucked under a cap, a red poncho, backpack, and walking sticks; she was taking measured steps and doing it alone. We came to the realization of her silent resolve as she focused on her movements to move forward, our slight discomfort was nothing in comparison. We found new motivation to trudge on. The highlight of this day was when three quarters of the way we came upon Ponte Maceria, the ancient bridge over the Río Tambre. After the long haul, this was a great place to rest by the waterfall upstream and take in the majestic river flowing rapidly under the stone bridge. The 13th century bridge which literally translates as “Apple Bridge” dates to Roman times. Built on Roman foundations, it leads to an enchanting hamlet with pazos or country mansions along its banks.
Valerio & Zack I was fortunate to walk over this ancient bridge- millions of pilgrims have walked and crossed this very spot over many centuries. We gave ourselves plenty of time exploring the hamlet and the splendid waterfall. The serenity surrounding the constant roar of the river and the rain overhead was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we forgot the aches and throbbing feet for a while and indulged in nature. This certainly was a site to remember and it will be one of my favorite sites along the Camino de Santiago. As we dug our heels and continued, the last couple of hours were pure agony. We thought the endless roads and constant uphill would never endwe made a resolve going forward that no matter how much pain we were in, we would never speak of it negatively. We would motivate each other and maintain a positive attitude. The difficulty of this hike is considered medium-high and after 6 hours 35 minutes and covering 25.7 km (16 miles) we reached our pitstop, the town of Negreira. Tomorrow, we almost double the distance: how will our bodies respond and do we have the fortitude to continue? Follow my journey in the October Issue. September

Off the Beaten Path Mount Charleston Written by Francesca Maria
Welcome to September to all my readers! I am writing about Mt. Charleston this month, because it is the most perfect time of the year to enjoy a hike in the gorgeous mountains that are close by. The temperatures are on average 25 degrees cooler up there than down here in the valley. And because it is starting to get cooler now (finally), the air up there is brisk in the mornings and evenings. During the afternoon, it is perfect for hiking or just casual nature walks or a picnic with the family.
T
here are a few different kinds of hikes to choose from. You decide what is best for you and your group.
My favorite is the “The Raintree Trail” which is a 6-mile roundtrip walking trail where the goal is to meet the main attraction; The Raintree which is a majestic 3,000-year-old Bristlecone Pine Tree. The trail gains 1,100 feet, so you’ll get a decent workout along with some beautiful views of the surrounding mountains that look nothing like you would expect in Vegas. Mt. Charleston (Charleston Peak) is the highest peak in southern Nevada and one of the most popular hikes in the state. Less than an hour’s drive from Las Vegas, it provides a dramatic change of scenery and fresh air. From the top, expect panoramic views, with the Sierra Nevada

on the horizon to the west and parts of Las Vegas visible to the southeast. Recreational opportunities include over 50 miles of maintained trails, four picnic areas, eight campgrounds, and several dirt roads. Hunting is permitted in season, and bicycles are permitted on some trails. Really there is something for everyone. If you are into the nature scene mixed with the night life, you will enjoy the “Night Hikes” where you travel with a well-trained naturalist deep into the forest or along a trail after the sun has set. Night hikes are timed with dusk to ensure that your eyes can adjust properly. On this hike, you get an education too, where you will learn about nocturnal animals and how they have adapted to the twilight to survive or about astronomy and how one can use the stars to navigate and even tell what time of year it is. Night hikes include a small amount of hiking through easy terrain as well as various activities out in the dark. Bring a flashlight, but don't plan to use it. For the aspiring scientist, then you might enjoy the Science Safaris. Learn about a widespread of species found only on the mountain. Each safari has a specific creature or plant that you go searching for. Learn to set traps and help scientists collect data. An educational program and crafts are included. Safaris typically run from 9:00AM-12PM. Registration is required. Safaris have limited capacity. You must register ahead of time for a specific safari. You will receive a confirmation letter via email with the location of the safari, how to get there, and what to expect. You love the mountains but don’t want to hike? If that is you then you would enjoy the Interpretive programs where there is no hiking involved, but include activities that may require some movement. These programs focus on specific topics such as how to recognize signs of wildlife, archaeology, and wildflowers. Are you an artist? Or enjoy Art Workshops? Mt. Charleston Art Workshops are for all ages and all skill levels and are held at various locations on the mountain. There will always be beautiful scenery for you to indulge your talents in. As always, I enjoy hearing from my readers. Feel free to write me and tell me about your adventures: francesca@highriselifevegas.com September

Nobody knows for sure what the future brings, but the best way to analyze the future of real estate is to look back and compare. Interest rates went up and that will affect homebuyers, as 95% of first time homebuyers require financing. As millennials are approaching a life stage that motivates a home purchase, they are presenting a massive demographic wave for the next 10 years in the real estate market, but increased interest rate might slow that down.
of sales and availability in the market keeps supply rather tight. As you will see below, sales keep increasing!
The trend for more traditional sales continues in Las Vegas this summer. Southern Nevada still shows a shortage of homes available for sale and that is even more true for condos and townhomes. The difference between the amount
