(Rio Grande City, Texas)- Now that all the stress of who to sign with is over, Rio Grande City senior Stephen Saenz can now concentrate on winning another state title in the shot put event in Class 5A but his biggest quest will be trying to capture the title in the discus event. “I have not been throwing well because of my focus with the shot put. I want to win both events in Austin this May,” said the Auburn University-signee. In order to win both events, he would have to unseat defending State 5A discus champion, UCLA-signee, Matt Kosecki of Humble High School. “He’s tough. He throws well. I have to work harder to make this happen,” adds Saenz. At the 2009 Rio Grande Valley Meet of Champions, Saenz eclipsed the 70’0 mark in the shot put on his final throw, bringing cheers from the crowd but the referee called it a scratch. His best throw this season is 71’0 1/2”. In the discus, his throw of 197’11” this season surpassed his state discus distant of 180’01” which means that he could be on his way in staying close to Kosecki. The Humble thrower won with a mark of 193’09” in the state meet in 2008. “This is my last year. It would be nice to win both events.” Signing Day was a highlight in this Rattler’s career. After receiving offers from major universities such as Arizona, LSU, Oklahoma, and Michigan, Saenz loved the campus at Auburn. Most importantly, he loved the coach. “Coach [Jerry] Clayton has coached NCAA champions and is currently working with Olympians in the throwing events,” Saenz said. “His coaching style is the one aspect that caught my attention. I feel comfortable with his methods, and I think that is very important to look at because the coach and the athlete have to get along.” Saenz now says that he would like to compete in the Olympics but his size might give Looking for titles. other coaches doubts. “Most throwers weight about 300 pounds and stand 6’5”. I weigh only 230 pounds and stand 6’2”,” laughs Saenz. “It’s all about technique. Size doesn’t matter,” he adds. At the Nike Indoor Nationals at Boston’s Reggie Lewis Center, Saenz threw his best shotput toss of 71’.05”. Saenz, a member of the 2008 35th Anniversary Track & Field News AllAmerican Team, spun with tornadic force and released. The crowd’s reaction told him all he needed to know. He had just moved into third place all-time nationally with a toss of 71-0.50. “It was a great moment for me because I was there by myself,” Saenz said. “My coach and my parents didn’t go. So that, for me, was a maturity check to see if I could handle big-time meets with no one there to correct me or give me support. I hit … 71 feet, a mark I had been trying to get the whole season, and to hit it at Nationals felt great.” Five years ago at AAU Nationals, Saenz

In the discus, Lopez threw 159’3, which ranks him second to Saenz inthe Valley. Garza falls in at third with 156’8”. Garza is only a freshmen at Rio Grande City. With the 305A meet just around the corner, Saenz has set his sights of reaching 215 in the discus and 73 in the shot, while defending his 2008 state title in the shot and hopefully overtaking UCLA commit Matt Kosecki (Humble, Texas) for the state’s disc crown. Through March 26, Kosecki has the edge in the disc – 198-2 to 197-2.5. “I would love to see Alex and Geronimo, along with myself advancing to the state meet in Austin this May,” adds Saenz. “It would be a great way to end my career at Rio.” HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS MAGAZINE

We Are The C (Georgetown, Texas)-The Hidalgo High School Early College Boys Soccer team defeated Mesquite Poteet 2-0 to win the University Interscholastic League’s State 4A Soccer Title. It’s been just a few days since Pirates head coach Zeke Morales coached his team to the state title game and says that he is “overwhelmed” by winning the title and he can still feel the chills running down his spine. “I can still feel the emotion. This win is unbelievable,” says Morales as his smiles circles his entire face. “Unbelievable. I told our players that we had some unfinished business to take care of after losing in the state-semifinals two years ago. Our team stuck together,” added Morales. And that they did. After losing to Brownsville Pace in “La Copa” tournament hosted by Hidalgo I.S.D. back in January, this Pirate team still managed to play together as a team. “We kept believing that we could get back to state,” said junior forward Jesus Mireles. But most importantly, Mireles wanted another crack at winning the title. “I was a freshmen back then when we went to the state tournament in 2007. We could have won it too. This year, I wanted to work harder to get this team back. And we did it,” said Mireles. Coach Morales, a former 1993 McAllen Memorial High School graduate, never imagined after graduating from high school, that sixteen-years later he would be coaching at Hidalgo and winning a state title in his young career. “This is wild. But I have to remember those who taught me well. My soccer coach at Memorial, Pat Leal inspired me to pursue my career as a coach. wife Nidia both died in a car crash in Rio Hondo, Texas on May 30, 1999. “He would have loved to have seen this moment,” said Morales as he held back his tears. Morales thanked his athletic director Albert Guerra and his administration for giving him an opportunity at Hidalgo. In his first three seasons as head coach, he has led the Pirates to two state tournament appearances, winning one title. However, winning the state title in 2009 did not come easy for the Pirates. First, they had to settle for a third place finish in District 61-4A and then beat Weslaco East in overtime 10 just to advance to the next round. “It was a tough road because all of our victories

The Class 32-3A Hidalgo Pirates had to move up to one classification higher to Class 4A in soccer, since the UIL does not offer soccer in Class 3A. “Playing these tough 4A schools was a challenge but after beating Boerne, we felt more confident,” added Morales. The Pirates continued their title run with another victory in the State 4A semifinals with a 3-2 victory over last year’s finalist, Brenham. “The best part of winning this title is that it belongs to this community and next year we will have to defend our title,” said Esequiel Morales. “I am proud of these players and they deserved this championship.”
Teams Ready for District Meets HSSM Track and Field
(McAllen, Texas)-The Rio Grande Valley Track and Field District Championships will tip off this weekend at various stadiums throughout the area. The biggest question in 32-4A surrounds Mercedes senior Alex Trevino. The State 4A Bronze Medalist in the 200m in 2008 has been hampered by hamstrings throughout the
season. At the RGV Meet of Champions, Trevino cried out in pain as he aggrevated his hamstring in 200m running event. Despite the set back, Tiger teammate Alex De La Garza will be looking to make it back to state for another state medal in the 1600m where he placed second in Class 4A. will be McAllen Memorial’s Tricia Terry. The TCU bound runner will be vying for a state championship in her final season in the 3200m and 1600m runs. Last year, Terry brought home the Class 5A Silver Medal in the 1600m. Other Memorial standouts to look for will be freshmen pole vaulter Matthew Kaufmann and high jumper Jacob Garza. Kaufmann (14’0”) will go head-to-head with Sharyland’s Chase Riley (15’1”) in 305A, while Garza’s previous mark of 6’10” in the jump is best in the region. Last year at the State 5A Meet 16

in Austin, Plano East’s Toddrick Allen won this event with the same clearing. He is favored to return to state. In the shot put and discus event, all heads will be watching Rio Grande City’s Stephen Saenz. The State 5A Shotput Champion should easily dominate this event in 30-5A, along with the discus. His best throw in the shotput this season is 71’0”. He also threw 197’11” feet in the discus this season. The Auburn University signee is eager to get back to state. (McAllen, Tx)-The McAllen Bulldogs split games with Sharyland in 30-5A and with both teams tied for first with 9-1 records, Bulldog head coach Eliseo Pompa would love to win it all. Against Donna, the Bulldogs (20-3, 9-1) ended this series in five innings by shutting out the Redskins 10-0, while the Rattlers knocked off Rio Grande City 11-1 in five innings as well. Last year, the Bulldogs advanced to the State 5A Region IV semifinals before losing to San Antonio Reagan 2-6, 11-1, and 10-1. The Rattlers bid for a state title ended in the region quarterfinals with a 5-4 loss to Laredo United. The Longhorns advanced to the State 5A Tournament.They would lose to eventual state champion Plano West 11-4. Safe? (Palmview, Texas)-The 35-mph winds and chilling weather did not seem to bother the La Joya High School Coyote golf team as they surged to a 299 team finish on Day-Two to clinch the second place spot in 30-5A and advance to the State 5A Region IV Championships for the second straight year. Sharyland won the title for the fifth consecutive season with a 288 on the final day. Both teams will now travel this Tuesday to San Antonio, Texas to play at Pecan Valley Golf Course. Shotgun is set for 7:30 a.m. La Joya junior golfer JP Cordova managed to stay tied with 30-5A two-time defending champion Abraham Ancer from Sharyland with identical 2-over par 74 at the Martin Valley Golf Course in Palmview. Primary a Winter Texan Course, this flat course offered plenty of winds on Day One but with the cool breeze passing by on Day Two, Cordova stayed even and made his charge on the final three holes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was patient and stayed focus,â&#x20AC;? said Cordova. Ancer was leading by four strokes until a disastrous double-bogey on the No.18 Par 5. Still, Ancer needed a stronger finish but Cordova nailed a pitching wedge close enough for a birdie on the Par 4 Dog-legged No.17. Ancer would bogey No.17. rounds of 78-74 to lead the Panthers back to the regional tournament. In 31-5A, Harlingen South sophomore Roman Robledo captured his second straight title at the Tony Butler Golf Course in Harlingen to advance to regional. The Harlingen South Hawks also won the team title by edging Edinburg by two strokes. In girl’s tournament action, Weslaco’s Lizzie Hovda captured her second straight 32-5A title by shooting 79-79 on both days to lead her team and Edinburg North’s senior Felicia Espericueta won her fourth consecutive 31-5A title. Both advanced to the State 5A Region IV Championships next week in San Antonio, Texas. Espericueta will be attending SMU in the Fall on a golf scholarship Sharyland will be paired with San Antonio Regan and Austin Westlake this Tuesday, a matchup head coach Fernando Rodriguez anticipated. “This will be a great pairing for us. If our No.3,4, and 5 boys play well, we should advance to state,” adds Rodriguez. Freshmen Carlos Pena fired two rounds of 78-70 as the third man for the Rattlers while Aaron Ramon (77-75) and Christian Ganoa (79-81) completed their rounds with scores under 80. The biggest surprise in 30-5A was the superb play of La Joya’s Mike Morales. He started the first day with a 85 but a string of seven birdies netted him a score of 70 on the final day to lead his Coyotes.

With the excitement of the possibility of the UIL moving the Class 5A Regional Tournament to the Rio Grande Valley in 2010, Valley golfers will probably play Pecan Valley for the last time in 2009. “This will be great if we get the Region IV Golf Tournament down here in the Rio Grande Valley,” said McAllen Memorial head coach Celso Gonzales. “It’s been long overdue.”
