How We Found Gold By Elana Godfrey

The Journey From Greece I arrived from Greece. The journey felt like it went on forever. I finally made it along with my family. In my family, there is Mama, Father, my older brother Marco, and my little sister, Helena. My name is Hestia Anthis. I left home, along with my family, because my Farther wanted to find fortune and make History. I arrived on the shores of Australia. Many other people, from many other lands joined us. There were not many children, and if there were, they were mostly boys.

In Town We arrived in town a few days after we landed in Australia. There were shops everywhere. Father said that he needed some sort of permit. If he didn’t have one and was caught digging without one, he would be in a lot of trouble. Father brought a permit. We got some equipment, including, shovels, pans, and a few other things. We got a lot of flour, some meat, lots of tea and plenty of other rations. We also got a few tents. The next day, we would be heading to the gold fields.

The Gold Fields We arrived on the gold fields the following day. It was chaos. People were digging, panning and working very hard. We found a shady spot and set up camp. There where a few campers next to us, but they were very friendly. Marco and Father went to work immediately, but got tired very fast. It looked like hard work.

Technique We chose to pan. Maybe if we had mined in the shafts we would have found gold. Maybe even in a different location. We found ten small nuggets. Father was very happy and he said that our luck would run out and fast if we stayed. We were very lucky with what we found. Most miners don’t find anything. I am so glad that Mama persuaded Father to buy all of that tea because Marco and Father needed it. If we had run out of supplies, we would have had to go back to town and then we might not have found so much gold.

After the Gold Rush After the gold rush, most of the Germans stayed behind in Victoria. Some fought in the army, but we left. Mama, Helena and I shared a cabin while Marco and Father shared the other. We went back to Germany where we were very proud to show are friends what we had found. Father had thought that he had made history with our wealth that we had found. I guess that everyone makes history. Australia had changed. Towns and buildings and roads had sprung up everywhere.
