My Life in the Goldfield

My Life in the Goldfield By, Mia Wilson

Hello, I’m Melody Aqua-Marine. This is my life on the goldfield. I am 10 and I followed my family to the goldfield. This is how I survived on the goldfields helping my father mine for gold.

I traveled from the United Kingdom to Victoria, Australia in search of gold in Ballarat.

A picture of when you arrive in Melbourne.

When you arrive in Melbourne you have to decide what to do first.

What to do first?

My family and I decided to buy a permit so we are legally allowed to mine.

I only have 20 pounds, and the permit costs 5 shilling.

I decided to buy a permit.

I bought my permit because I can’t bear even thinking of being in jail. My family also bought their permits for the same reason.

As you can see, my permit and everyone’s permits expires in one year. After that year you have to buy another one, or take the brave.

Next, I decide to buy some supplies.

Here, you will have to decide on warmth or how much food you buy, remember you still need to buy tools as well.

Warmth or food?

I decide to but a tent, a blanket, flour and tea, no mutton though because it goes off easily. That will bring my money to, 15 pounds and 4 shillings.

Before I buy my tools, I will choose my mine.

I get to choose from the alluvial mine or the shaft mine. In alluvial, you find gold in bigger nuggets, but most of it has been found. The Shaft mines however, don’t have that problem.

My mine?

My family and I decided to mine in the shaft mine, we need a bucket, a windlass, a cradle and a pick. We need more tools for the ashaft mine but hopefully it’s the right choice.

Tools

As I said before, I need a cradle, a windlass, a bucket and a pick. But my family and I still have to decide if we should buy every tool.

Tools

My family and I buy every tool. Now I only have 9 pounds and 10 shillings, bet to get to work!

First mining trip.

After the first 14 days, we run out of food. My family has to stop digging and travel back to Melbourne.

Oh No!

Oh No! A thief has taken all of our money! We have to start all over again. My family are not happy.

After that year…

After that horrible year, my family became rich beyond our wildest dreams. It took a while, but we finally made it! We found the thief and he was arrested. That year was fun and scary, I’m happy it’s over.

The End Hope you have enjoyed.
