MY LIFE AS A MINER…
HOW I STARTED Bonjore! I am Mark Henry Dolier. People came from all over the world for the Australian gold field and I was one of the many from France. It was hard traveling on the ship for all those days and nights,
I have to say. On that ship, the whole time I was always thinking about what would become of me once I arrived. Read onwards to discover if I managed to find gold, and how I survived on the gold rush!
WHEN I ARRIVED As I wheeled into the streets of Ballarat, Victoria I was given a map from a fellow digger. He told me that I could mark where I would go, and where I would stay away from. When I asked him what a permit was, he leant over and whispered in my ear that it was best if I saved my money for other things like food, for if I was lucky, I would get away from the policemen that check for your ‘licence’ . From this, I had decided that I would save my money for food and tools, and take the risk of going to gaol.
MINNING DECISIONS There is two types of mining, aluvial, and shaft. Since I had decided not to by a permit or licence, I looked for the mine with the more expensive tools. This was shaft. I ended up bying a windlass, a
bucket, a pick, and a cradle. No, not the baby’s cradle! A mining one. After bying these, blankets, a tent, and food I decided to set of!
MY FIRST TRY Dig over! I tried to find gold without a permit and I did it! I didn’t find much though, it is only worth ₤60. I guess I will have to try again!
ONE AFTER THE OTHER Grrrr! How annoying! A thief has stolen all my money and now I am left having to try again. I guess that I am still lucky though for I haven’t run in to a permit hunt yet!
ONE LAST GO YES! I have become rich! At last I have founds some gold worth ₤168! I guess that all my hard work has payed of by finding 101 ounces of gold!
