FOREWORD Dear Senior Class of 2021, You soon will be leaving the halls of Carmel High School. Each of you will find yourself in unfamiliar territory, and, at times, filled with uncertainty. If and when you do find yourself at one of these times of doubt, remember you have been trailblazers who led your entire community through adversity. You have achieved what no other graduating class has ever undertaken. Destiny has allowed you to go deeper, work harder, be more creative, and stay more positive. As we wind down the 2020-21 school year, there are a flood of mixed emotions as I pen this letter. Sadness: I understand your sadness as you thought many times throughout the year, “I just wish we could do this” or “I don’t care about the pandemic. This isn’t fair.” Relief: I am so relieved that our year of the pandemic is almost over and we have successfully navigated these unknown waters.

GRACE XU

Gratitude: The entire CHS community holds a debt of gratitude to the Class of 2021. Your leadership has continued to make Carmel High School a special place. Awe: In your own way, each of you made the best of our new normal. When you could have given up, you did not and made this a great year at Carmel High School. Joy: I am so proud of your response to this school year, the perseverance you have demonstrated, and the kindness you have shown to your classmates. You have shared tears with your teachers and laughter the very next minute. You found joy in a very difficult setting. The unique experiences of this time in history are a part of you. Remember this, Class of 2021, you are special and were born to be triumphant.

With love and respect, PRINCIPAL TOM HARMAS

WHAT GOT YOU INTO RUNNING?

BING HUDSON Cross Country/Track Lipscomb University

“Back in fourth and fifth grade, our school had like Pups Running and I thought I’d go out and do it because I was fast at recess and stuff and so I did that. And then in middle school, I decided to try cross country and I was pretty good at it and I knew all along that Carmel had a good high school cross country program and track program. So, when I got to high school, I tried it and (I) was one of the top guys, so I stuck to it and it worked out pretty well.”

WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES?

KATELYN CONLEY Tennis Marian University

“Winning state freshman year was pretty awesome. But then, every year for semistate we go up to Culver and what we do, we like make a whole day out of it where we walk around the town, go to a coffee shop. And then afterwards, if we win we get to go to the local pizza parlor and jump in the lake if we win which is super fun. That means that like we’re state bound, so that’s always fun every year. “

“I’m grateful for all the opportunities Carmel swimming has provided me with as well as the life lessons I’ve learned from my coaches and teammates. They’ve also provided me with a forever family and support system no matter where I go next. I’m excited to go to Purdue to have a change in training to just take my swimming to the next level, as well as to get to meet new people.”

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CONTINUE PLAYING SOCCER IN COLLEGE? “I decided to keep playing in college because I love it so much and I think it’s really fun. And I just get to play with some of my friends (because) they are going to the same college as me, so I’m pretty excited about that.”

“COVID-19 has definitely affected me a lot. While I’ve still been able to do a lot of the activities I would do on a normal year like run cross country and go to sporting events, they all were different because of social distancing precautions. We usually go on a week-long trip to southern Indiana for team camp where we train down there, play games and get to bond as a team, but that’s not the most COVID-19 safe activity. So instead, we just took a day trip down to Turkey Run and ran and canoed there for the day.”

“(I love) every single time I get to hang out with people or get a normal experience with in-person classes. COVID-19 has made me treasure those experiences a lot more than I used to because originally (at the start of the pandemic) I wasn’t even sure if we would ever have those moments. I definitely wish I could have had a normal senior year, but I’m still happy that I’ve had a pretty fun time. I feel like it’s passed really fast regardless of COVID-19.”

LESS TRAVELED SENIORS EXPLAIN ALTERNATIVE PLANS, UNIQUE MAJORS

KELLY FLECKENSTEIN I thought (I would try) taking a break from school, a break from that kind of structured life to get a taste of what else the world has to offer first. After a year, I can see what I want to do and what my true passion and calling is.

WHY DO YOU THINK THAT A GAP YEAR MIGHT BE VIEWED AS UNCONVENTIONAL? I think it’s because it’s drilled into us that you’ll go to college...I still actually plan to go to college, but it’s just a matter of finding my true passions first. I hate feeling rushed and I feel like the traditional system rushes you into each next thing of your life.

AIDAN KONICEK WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR AFTER MILITARY SERVICE? I have not thought about it too much, but I do have backup plans if I can’t get a mechanical job—I plan on going into the trades, so that’s a possibility... In the military, I probably will do college courses because they pay for your college.

CLAYTON WALKER WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? I will be attending the NASCAR Technical Institute down in Morrisville, North Carolina, and I plan to become a NASCAR technician and hopefully join a pit crew team.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GO TO THE NASCAR TECHNICAL INSTITUTE? I’ve always loved racing and it’s something that called to me. I’ve always loved working on cars and it’s just one of those things I’ve always wanted to do.

Nick will attend University of Kansas in the fall

WHY DO YOU THINK THAT THIS PATH MIGHT BE VIEWED AS UNCONVENTIONAL? It’s just not something that you see every day. Because most people want to sit behind a desk or do more convenient, more conventional things, easier things to do. And then, that trade of work (in NASCAR)—it’s something you have to put your heart and soul into every day, and come ready to work hard and sweat.

JACK DUCAT WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU ANTICIPATE AS A MUSICAL THEATER MAJOR?

JACK DUCAT | SUBMITTED PHOTO

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? I’m still working on making my decision; I’m still waiting on some places, but I will for sure be going for a BFA in musical theater at a college.

The biggest one is definitely that the business is incredibly unpredictable. I am so lucky to have some college programs to go to and options because a lot of students don’t, because it’s just so insanely competitive, but I think the coolest thing, as well as a really challenging thing about theater and acting, is that it’s a lifelong learning process. There is no specific way to perform art, there’s no specific way to make art and there’s no specific way to study art. It’s all subjective. So I think for me personally, a big challenge— a challenge I really look forward to—will be how to continually learn and discover new things about this passion of mine as I go through this business, because there is no way to ever have all the answers.

WHAT ARE SOME POSITIVES THAT YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING INTO THEATER? So many. Theater—as well as TV/film, all types of acting jobs in general— when it comes to the arts, there’s a focus around storytelling, honestly and accurately telling the stories of real world human beings and finding things that people can connect to. Everybody has a TV in their house, everybody watches TV or movies or plays in some capacity. I think the coolest thing about this art form is that we have to take charge and be able to tell the stories of people who need to be told. A really big positive is that we can begin to bring about positive social change in our environment by telling stories that people need to hear and allowing people to see and understand the stories of other people as well.

RESOURCE TEACHER “Our kiddos work so hard to meet their goals of completing all their classes and getting the credits…I had one student graduate early back in October…that was awesome and I have another that is just about ready to graduate. Obviously, this year has been a big challenge. We tend to have our students for three years: tenth, eleventh, and twelfth, so we really can build those connections and relationships so I’d say by senior year, we’d already developed (our relationships) so (the differences of this year) didn’t impact that too much but it’s still a challenge with just trying to do it through messaging and Zooming and things like that.”

JENNIFER RILEY-DAVIS JEWELRY AND INTRO TO 2D ART TEACHER “I’m really grateful for the smaller class sizes this year, and it has allowed me to get to know my kids even better. With an elective class, I feel like I always do have the ability to do that a little bit easier but it’s even stronger this year with the smaller class sizes and we get to talk about how we felt over the past year and check in emotionally. Some of my seniors are planning on doing something with art (after high school). They’ve had more space to work and a lot of attention from me too with the smaller sizes. I know it’s been a rough year and a half and it’s not the way school is supposed to be but I think that we’ve all done the best we can to get through it and even surprised ourselves with the limitations of what we can do. We’ve made the best of a tough thing so yeah, I wish them all the best of luck.”

“I’m excited to be on my own and experience the real world. (I want to) learn as much as I can, try to get a good internship with a major company like Google or Amazon because I’m going to do computer science, and maybe make a video game on the side.”

OUR SENIOR CLASS SHOWED ABILITY TO HANDLE ADVERSITY

A

s we reflect on our four years at CHS, we can’t lose sight of this fact: We may have endured the four most tumultuous school years of any high school class that stepped into this building, and came out of the other side stronger than ever before. In February 2018, our freshman year, we lived through Carmel Hell Week, which featured a knife attack, multiple fights, a school shooting threat and a mass absence one Friday school day. While we occasionally joke about these events three years on, this was not a laughing matter. During that same week, a tragic school shooting actually happened at a large, affluent high school similar to ours: Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. These events served as a wake-up call for all of us, warning us about the dangers of mental health and the fragility of school safety. However, nothing could prepare us for the turmoil that 2020 brought us. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged throughout the world, I remember predicting to my friends that there was no possible way the school would shut down. Because nothing ever affects Carmel, right? You know what happened next. Just as we prepared to push through the final stretch of junior year, the world turned upside down. A lot of bubbles burst during the time of COVID-19. It was the first time we have endured a period of mass suffering and collective trauma, similar to 9/11 or the

Vietnam War for previous generations. Additionally, race relations reached new lows with the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and discrimination against the Asian-American community—all during one of the most contentious elections in American history. This combination of catastrophes affected our community in ways that most other events never did. And it was in this environment that we, as seniors, had to grow from adolescents to adults. We managed to adjust to virtual learning on the fly last year and hybrid learning this year. We wore masks and stayed socially distant. As seniors, we are often told that we set an example for the rest of the school. During this school year, that cliché was never more important, and we lived up to those expectations. We adapted during a global crisis, doing our part to keep the virus at bay. Most strikingly, our class went above and beyond during this time. Some of us braved the risks and took up jobs in restaurants, animal shelters, hospitals and grocery stores, keeping our community functioning. We campaigned for candidates and protested injustice. We did our part, and then some. Each and every graduating class that comes out of CHS has awesome potential to change the world. However, because of what we’ve been through, our ceiling is truly limitless. If we can make such a large impact during a time of crisis, imagine what we can do during more fortunate times.

DEAR 14-YEAR-OLD ME,

ight now as you’re reading this, I’m getting ready to submit my senior biography for choir. Yeah, you’re still in choir. And yes, you’re writing this as a staff member in the newspaper. Interesting, huh? I bet you never expected that. That’s one thing that being a student at CHS will teach you— you have options. With that in mind, you should know that being part of such a big school means you need to be a little uncomfortable and a little bit courageous. Try going to different clubs and trying out different classes. Some of the best experiences you have during your four years will come out of those uncomfortable yet necessary moments. So, no, it’s probably not too late to join the guitar club. You just have to speak up a little. Like Matt Damon said, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of just embarrassing bravery. If there’s one very important tip you should hear from yourself, I think it would be to volunteer all the time. Whenever you have a free weekend, go do something helpful. It is pretty easy to create an account for an organization like Carmel Clay Parks and start cleaning up the park. I do it a lot, and the hard work really does pay off. I read a quote during my sophomore year that I wish I had read earlier: “Wherever we are, whatever we’re doing and wherever we are going, we owe it to ourselves, to our

art (and) to the world to do it well.” The point of all of these years of schooling is not to check items off of a to-do list or to get A’s. What you will soon learn is that there is so much more to school, and to life, than a checklist. So, yes, work hard. But more importantly, work smart. Produce your best work, not for a grade, but for yourself. Learn something useful from time to time. I think you might have this idea in your head that I have it all figured out. Before I disappoint you, I must remind you that life is often an uphill battle. You may not have experienced hardship or failure up to this point, but you will. There will be moments where you feel like you have it all figured out, just to be completely overwhelmed with life the next day. I’m telling you, days like those are what give life value and meaning. So, I am quite okay with not knowing. And you should be, too. A few more things: Steve wants to do chemistry experiments with you. Make sure to spend some time with him. Ask Mom how her day at work was. Lastly, enjoy life, and don’t be in such a hurry to grow up. Regards,

“The TV area is my favorite part of CHS because I have so many great memories, and it is where I truly found what I want to do in the future... It is largely because of the amazing people who I have been able to get to know. Some memories... include getting to know and work with so many great people and our teacher. Having Mrs. (Brandy) Ostojic as a teacher was so awesome because she truly gave us the experience of a real TV station, and she was able to be not only a teacher for us, but also a friend and someone who I always know I can count on.“

“I am especially fond of the C halls because it’s the place in Carmel High School that is dedicated to creating all kinds of art, which is something that I have always enjoyed doing. Throughout my high school years, I made some of my closest friends in those rooms, and I felt a sense of belonging there more than any place else... With the help of my digital photography teacher, Miss (Nicole) Palmer, I was able to create a photography work that ended up earning me a scholarship award worth $1,500, and I will never forget how happy I was when that was given to me.”

“I spent my SRT in the radio room, and any time outside of school that I had the chance, I would be in the on air booth or a recording booth. My favorite thing that we do in the radio hall is decorating for winter! I have a picture from a couple years ago of the snowflake lights hanging from the ceiling. Once we put up little notes on the walls, and we’ve had races on rolling chairs. We wheeled Mr. (Dominic) James around in a chair for his 60th birthday, and a couple people, myself included, brought in cake to celebrate. Radio is more of a family to me than a class or organization.”

“The backstage area of the auditorium is definitely my favorite part of the school just because that’s where I am usually located when we’re working on shows, and it really is just a place where all the techies come together after weeks of rehearsals and make magic happen. I associate it with getting work done and putting on shows, but also working closely with other techies and sharing quality time with them.”

“I really like (the catwalk) because of all the windows there; it’s really nice to see outside, especially on nice days. I mostly remember it from times I’ve spent there after school, when it’s pretty empty. One of my favorite things is to watch the sun set, so I mostly remember the times I’ve spent after school, especially around winter, when I’m leaving school and I stop by the catwalk to look outside. I guess I just appreciate the architecture of that area and it’s pretty calming, because I can get really stressed out by school, but that area gives me peaceful memories.”

“I love the performing arts area because I have (participated) and (am) participating in the Carmel Choirs department. I’ve enjoyed singing, making new friends and earning myself a few solos. I also love the performing arts area because I made it into the spring musical, ‘Mamma Mia.’ I’ve auditioned for high school musicals in the past, but never made it until this year. I’m in the ensemble for this musical. In general, I just love to sing, act and dance!”

20 | SIBLING LETTERS

sibling Dear Jayden,

LETTERS

Right now, as I’m writing this, I can hear you screaming at your friends while playing “League.” It is very loud. I cannot say I will miss hearing your voice when I am off to college (jk!). Anyway, thanks for being my brother! Although we argue a lot and have many dramatic beefs, it’s nice to know that we will bounce back to being best(ish) buds within an hour and go on random McDonald’s runs that I somehow end up paying for every time. I will genuinely miss you when I head off to college, especially your monologues about whatever YouTube video or anime you’ve watched lately. Despite what I sometimes say about your brain cells (or lack thereof), I know you’ll go on to do amazing things in life! You’ve always done things that you love and gone after them with all your heart, and that is something that will bring you far! Exhibit A: your YouTube channel with 20k followers. Exhibit B: your ability to ask the same lady at a food court for samples 5 times. In hindsight, that might have been a smart move. What a cool kid. Live life with no regrets! Good luck in Texas! Your favorite sister, Chloe

Dear Chloe,

Hello. You have finally gotten me to write this letter. I can’t believe you’re going to college! You’re so short that you still look like a freshman! I wonder how it will be for you! Hopefully you will have a good time in college and don’t have any procrastination issues. I will also really miss you at home when you go to college, just so you know. My personal Uber Eats will be gone! Remember to make time to help me with school—I probably will need lots of help. Also, don’t get too stressed during college! I know it’s like telling a sad person to “just be happy,” but take care of yourself. Also, make sure to bring back souvenirs and stuff like that from college, and don’t forget my birthdays! I won’t forget yours. Also, great job making it to Purdue with such a good scholarship! I hope you enjoy the campus, especially the food there! Just don’t spend all your money on food, and it’s smooth sailing from there! Your brother, Jayden

Dear Aiden,

The past eight years, you have single-handedly impacted my life more than anyone else I have ever met. From learning the names of the Kroger employees to befriending the janitors at your school, it’s clear to anyone who pays attention that you are determined to impact the lives of those around you. I’m not surprised that you are successful in doing so. The list of things I do everyday because of you is endless, and I’m so lucky that I get to take what I’ve learned from you to college with me. One thing you’ve taught me: don’t roll down the car windows when there is a child in the backseat. We’ve lost a lot of toys on the highway because someone wanted to play catch with the cars driving behind us. In all seriousness, you’ve also taught me the importance of appreciating everyone you meet and making a point to get to know them and show them kindness regardless of who they are. After years of watching you impact the lives of people that I had never paid much attention to before, I finally caught on: showing kindness to as many people as Wpossible makes the world a better place. This is a legacy you have established by example, and it’s one I’m going to carry with me in a few months when I don’t get to see you everyday. Keep Bailey in check for me. Love, Emma

Dear Emma,

You are very special to me. You are kind, friendly and thoughtful. I love when you play with me. I love when you dance with me, and I love going to Handel’s with you. Thank you for bringing me ice cream and taking care of me. Please get more ice cream before you go to college. You are a nice sister. I will miss you so much next year. Call mommy every day because I want to talk to you. I love you! Have fun, party hard, and stay curious! Love, Aiden

Dear Gretchen,

Wow. It’s crazy that we are seniors now! I just remember us watching “High School Musical 3” when we were little, just waiting till we get to be the Gabriella of Carmel High School. Our senior year looked very different from HSM3, and it’s not just because we don’t break out in song. Gretchen, you have been with me through everything. We came to Carmel only knowing each other, and we stuck together all four years. What was cool was that since Carmel is so big, we still would have days that we wouldn’t see each other till the end of the day. We would then chat about what our days were like over dinner. Gretchen, I can’t wait to see what you will do in the future. Wherever you go, with or without me, you are gonna CRUSH it!! Whatever college you choose will be lucky to have such a funny and sweet girl. It’s so weird to write you this letter because I tell you everything and if not, you already know what I’m thinking. Gretchen, I love you so much, you are my other half. Thank you for experiencing high school with me, and I can’t wait for all the things we will get to experience together in the future!! Love, Anna

Dear Anna,

Words can’t describe how much you mean to me. You are quite literally my built-in-best friend. Thank you for going through my life with me, from playing Barbies in our basement to going to Carmel High School with knowing only each other. If we do end up going to different schools, I want you to know I will always be here for you. FaceTime me any time of the day and I will answer. I’m so proud of the person you’ve become. You’ve helped me realize how important our faith is, and you’ve helped me grow closer to Jesus. You always encourage me when I am down on myself or feeling self-conscious. You have helped me through some rough times, and I want you to know how much that means to me. If we do go to separate schools, I know it’s going to be tough at first, but I think we are both ready for the next step of being the independent women we have helped each other become. Thanks for always walking to classes with me, playing lacrosse with me, driving with me, praying with me and always being there for me. I love you so much; thanks for doing life with me. Love, Gretchen
