FOREWORD
igh school, in some ways, is like a dream. there are
good times with your friends—the friends you’ve made here are some of the best friends you’ll ever have, and it’s important to cherish that. There are so many opportunities here—it’s hard to find a place where you can choose to build a robot, play a saxophone or create a recreational curling team all in the same building. Sometimes, though, it can seem like a nightmare. The tests, constant practices, all-nighters and drama (put 5,000 hormonal teenagers in one building, and you’re bound to have problems). There’s no doubt we’ve all faced challenges during our time here. But put it all together, all the good stuff and all the bad stuff from your past four years, and you’ve got some-
thing special. You’ve got a real experience—something to remember, something to learn from. Maybe you found something to be passionate about, found people you really like or realized your potential. The point is, you did something, and you should be proud. When you leave through Door 13 for the last time at the end of this month, you’ll be leaving a lot behind. But you’ll be taking even more with you. All the memories, all the laughs, the drama, the memes even, they’ll stay with you. Because even though high school has to come to an end, your time at CHS is now a collection of fond memories. Class of 2019, it’s time to move on—to make your next set of memories. It’s time to take what you’ve learned here and start dreaming big about what comes next.

One time, my friends and I were just eating lunch casually and I had a banana in my hand. You know that thing where you can throw the banana and keep holding onto it, so the motion will propel the banana forward and peel it? I was going to do that and show it off to my friends, but (the banana) flew out of my hand and it just landed straight on the floor. The abruptness of the banana hitting the floor was really funny.

dear lilah,
I’m so proud of all the amazing things you have done throughout the 12 years of your high school “career.” You have faced many hardships that have only made you stronger, and for that reason, you are a big role model in my life. You have shown me what it means to stand tall (even when being so short) and to not let anyone bring you down. Although we were never the best of friends, I have loved being your sister and making all our hilarious memories and late night adventures. I wish you the best of luck in Hawaii with your honors marine biology studies. I can’t wait to take vacations and come crash with you in Honolulu. Thank you for being the great big sister you are and good luck next year! love, julia

I am so glad that you get to go to IU. I will REALLY miss you but I am happy you get to go learn about what you want to be. I just know that you will do a great job in college. You are so handsome, funny, silly and nice. I think you are also very strong, brave and a great football player. You are so smart. I know that you won’t ever fail a test. You are the best big brother! You are always willing to spend time with me. You do everything for me and can cheer me up when I am sad, sometimes by throwing socks at my head. You taught me so many things. You taught me how to ride my bike, climb a tree, and do a cart wheel and a hand stand. You also taught me to be kind to others, even if they aren’t kind to me. But most of all you showed me how to believe in myself, even when I feel dumb, and to keep trying, even when I feel like I can’t. I drew a picture of you and me for you to always keep in your pocket at college. If you are ever having a hard day, look at it and remember the things you taught me. You can look at it and think about how much I love you.

dear eva,
Whether it was by choice or by force, thanks for being my built-in best friend. While we might have our ups and downs, you inspire me each and every day to be a better person. I know we annoy each other almost every day and get in A LOT of fights, but I have no idea what I would have done without you, but now that day is here. In a few short months, we will be living in two separate cities, leading two separate lives. I guess this is where the dynamic duo comes to an end. At Ball State and IU, people won’t automatically know us as “Eva and Ruth” anymore. Having you by my side these past 18 years has been so fun despite my less-thanenthusiastic attitude at times. I am so proud of you and I can’t wait to see what you do in Bloomington. Thanks for being my food buddy, Just Dance partner, badminton competitor, bike ride comrade, best friend and my biggest fan. Keep up the good work, twin! love, ruth

I hope your first year at Butler goes great. You have been such a great sister to me and you made so many memories and moments with me. I want you to know that I will miss you, even though I know you’ll be making friends, learning and having fun swimming. It will be weird not having an awesome sister around to help drive me to sports, help around the house, and have fun with. I wish you luck and I know you will make lots of friends in college and I hope it goes well. I will miss you! love, cal
dear allie,
I hope college treats you well. It’ll be weird coming home and you not Out of everyone that I being home, but you do spend most have gotten close to over the of your time at swimming or in your room studying. Your persistence and course of my life so far, I don’t have a work ethic is admirable. You make relationship with anyone that is more complex high school and 20 plus hours of than with you. There isn’t a person that I have argued more with over these past four years swimming a week seem easy. I can’t especially, and there isn’t a person that I wait to see what you achieve in college and beyond to continue to purhave cared more for. sue your dream career. Thanks for always helping out whenever I need it. The house will seem quiet without I’m incredibly you but I’m sure Cal will be making plenty of noise to make up for it, unglad the drive down less he gets into a good book series. I US-31 towards Purdue is not love you and can’t wait to see what that terribly long because I know I you achieve in college! I will miss you. can go to you when I need some-
H
dear ruth,
For the last 18 years, you have been my biggest supporter. Whether your role is that of my campaign manager, running buddy or best friend, you have always been there for me. What am I going to do without you next year? Out of the past 6,750 days, we have not spent more than three consecutive days apart. In a couple of months, we will be restricted to only seeing each other over breaks (which you might be looking forward to). I am scared to experience life where people don’t know me as a part of the “Eva-Ruth duo.” Having a twin provides the safety of never being alone. The reality is we need to get used to being apart, because pretty soon we will be leading our own lives, potentially thousands of miles away from each other. Luckily, the distance between Muncie and Bloomington is only a two-hour drive. Not having my best friend to talk to when I’m bored, have a good laugh or get food with will be the most difficult transition in college. I want you to know I am beyond proud of you. You make me proud to be your sister every day because of how caring, passionate and brave you are. You know exactly who you are, and you are not afraid to stand out in a crowd. Ball State is lucky to have you.

Retiring Teachers
Take a look at these teachers’ views on their “senior” year at CHS
Tracy Hadden, History teacher how was your experience with the students at chs for the duration of your teaching career?
how important do you think education is for students today?
“I’ve had a great time here at CHS; it’s been like a second home and I absolutely love the students that I have encountered here. I’ve never seen such hard-working kids before; I’m really going to miss them a lot.”
“Education is formative; the most important thing for students is not to necessarily remember every detail that they learn, but that they develop some skills that will help them learn more in the future and develop a passion for education, so that they want to continue being lifelong learners.”
are there any specific memories you’ve had at chs that will stick with you when you leave?
what are your plans after you leave chs?
“I’ve made so many memories here with the students. I’ve just loved their creativity throughout the years; when we were doing the ‘50s theme clothing days, the kids would come in dressed up ready to engage and participate, and so it was just very encouraging to see students so thoroughly involved.”

ACUMEN editor Amy will attend IU next year.
“I’d say it’s been a journey, because when I started teaching at CHS 35 years ago, we only had about 2,000 kids, and I was just a young teacher. I’ve gone through five different principals since I’ve been here and countless superintendents, but I’ve always tried to enjoy doing what I’m doing and being here. It’s been an adventure and I’ve enjoyed it in a way.” how would you describe your interactions with the students and staff?
“I enjoy working with the students at the level I’m working with them at; most of them are sophomores and so it has
been a very rewarding experience. I’ve always enjoyed working with my colleagues and striving to make my job fun while still being a professional.” what are your plans after you leave chs?
“I’ve got a small business that I run—it’s a driveway-sealing business and it’s a seasonal thing. I think I’m just going to take it easy for a little while, and then if something comes up, I’ll fall into it; I really enjoy being outside. I’m a hunter, fisherman and hiker. I’ll probably do a lot more of those things.”

HIGH SCHOOL IS FILLED WITH BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS
and unconfident Asian boy who walked into main cafeteria a week before the school year began and wandered the halls like a blind mouse in a paper bag, lacking any source of direction or deep thought. Of course, you might wonder which year I’m referring to. That’s a trick question: I’m referring to all of them. Even junior and senior year, where searching for your locker can become one of the greatest odyssey (and laughing stock) events in your life. You see, underclassmen/younger versions of me, on the surface, high school is that kind of experience and yet somehow worse: a drab and miserable process of walking through halls along the same path, the same routine and the same events on every single day of the year (bar the weekends and intermittent school breaks) while somehow feeling like you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s like being an airplane pilot who doesn’t know how to use autopilot! Somehow! It’s the kind of feeling when you go through classes where you breeze through the coursework in one week, and the next week you’re getting whooped by the simplest of assignments. Maybe you’re too fried out of your mind to do anything. It’s also the kind of feeling of walking into clubs and other extracurriculars and feeling like you’re not doing as well as other people. Sometimes— scratch that—most of the time, it’s painfully and quite embarrassingly obvious that you kind of suck at what you are doing. And it’s a feeling that you’ll get after you realize that you have botched some of life’s biggest events, and you fall into many pseudo-life crises.

But even if you feel that way, you still can handle that. Part of it is that you’ve read the Dear Freshman Me columns from every previous year’s edition of the Senior Issue. Well, except for the 2016 issue. Freshman Year Me always seemed to get the short end of the proverbial stick anyways. But, more importantly, you can handle it because there are some darn great people that you meet along the way. Especially you, Freshman Me. You know almost no one at this school, so you better haul your big bones around the school trying to start conversations and learn people’s names. A lot of those people will go on to do amazing things, so you better at least be able to utter a sentence or two to them before you collapse of a stroke. And, even if you suck at what you do in clubs and extracurriculars, there are people who are still there to support you. No matter how bad you are, there are still people who’ll want to talk to you. It’s up to you, the underclassmen versions of me, to find those people. It goes the same way for the teachers. Sure, every high school experience is probably incomplete without one teacher whose class you dread entering, but there are some teachers in the school that completely overshadow those other ones. Ranging from the teachers who have the most hilarious stories to the ones who truly care about you to the ones that somehow get students near-perfect AP scores without doing anything, Carmel has the entire assortment. So, to the Freshman and Sophomore and Junior and Early Senior year editions of me, keep your heads up. No one said H life was going to be easy. Just live and learn, okay? Rethinking High School
Students should cherish small joys as much as major events
O
ften throughout life, people allow overarching
goals to hang over them like a damp cloud. Those goals and dreams consume their everyday activities and thoughts with a variety of ramifications. Perhaps the most apparent example of this phenomenon for high school students is the college admissions process. Students work tirelessly for four years, if not more, to gain acceptance into the college of their dreams. Students sacrifice sleep, socialization and countless hours for this large-scale goal, and in the process often neglect the small, pleasant everyday moments. Even if students eventually achieve their goal, it remains uncertain that the reward is worth the sacrifice. By focusing on the bigger picture, the individual pleasantries can lose their significance and simply fade into the background. I have fallen victim to this exact situation on countless occasions. Throughout my time in high school, I have often placed my long-term dreams before my day-to-day desires. For example, just a couple weeks ago, I wrote a paper for government instead of walking my dog. Then, the very next day I had to study calculus instead of taking my dog to the park and getting him a “pup cup” from Starbucks (if it isn’t obvious already, I’m really going to miss my dog at college, and my family too I guess). It is these truly tragic sacrifices that may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but are what I will miss most when I leave for college. I won’t get to see my dog every day in college, but I’ll certainly spend some quality time with my schoolwork. This is not to say I am suggesting that students should stop doing homework, but rather that sometimes it is necessary to pause, take a deep breath and enjoy life.

This is especially imperative as student stress levels continue to swell. According to the American Psychological Association, during the school year, teenagers have reported stress levels that exceed those of adults, with a majority of the stress being related to school activities. This is an alarming realization as high school is supposed to be a period of growth rather than acute fear of failure. While some stress can be positive and encourage a strong work ethic, too much can be debilitating and dangerous. This is further enhanced by the fact that according to Time Magazine, teenage depression and suicide rates are at an all-time high. An utter lack of mental health is perhaps the most pressing issue for high school students at the moment. Therefore, reducing stress in students and managing the pressure they feel from school is imperative. I urge those both just starting high school and those putting a neat bow on high school to take this advice: high school is just the beginning, not the end of the journey. No failure or success should define the rest of any student’s life. Instead, students should focus on enjoying the short time they have in high school instead of becoming consumed by stress. In particular, students should place a higher emphasis on spending time with family and friends while they still can. It is vital to make the most of the last drops of adolescence, free from a litany of responsibility. Before it’s too late, students should enjoy themselves to the fullest extent and leave worrying about the future for tomorrow. H Everything will work out just fine, probably. The views in this column do not necessarily reflect the views of the HiLite staff. Reach Misha Rekhter at mrekhter@hilite.org.

PLANS
Take a look at what some students have planned for their gap year.
What will your gap year look like? What are your plans for next year? Next year for my gap year, I am going to South America. So far I have planned going to Peru to do a Spanish immersion school for two months and then after that, go to Ecuador to volunteer at a children orphanage and teach English and enhance their living. Why did you decide to go? I just thought I needed a change of pace from schooling, and I knew I would never be able to travel and volunteer like this again so that’s why I want to do it now. I really want to become fluent in Spanish and those are two Spanish-speaking countries that are relatively safer for me to go to and I am more familiar with them and their culture. What are your plans for after your gap year? When I come back, I plan to go to University of Dayton but I am not sure if that’s where I will go. Hopefully this gap year will give me more clarity but I do know I want to work with kids and maybe something with psychology.

Botta is pursuing an apprenticeship in carpentry before college.
davis botta What are your plans for next year? For a gap year, I will be pursuing an apprenticeship in carpentry and work a lot to make money. Then I will go to college the next year. I will be doing my apprenticeship with someone I met at my church who’s a carpenter. He has his own shop so I will be learning under him and all the stuff he does. Why did you decide to pursue carpentry? I did technical theatre for all 3 years and it ignited a spark to build stuff. I enjoy building platforms and whatever I can. I want to pursue so that’s why I am taking the year off so if I don’t like the career then I can go to college and start another career. What are your plans after your gap year? I will still go to college and try to work on carpentry in the summer and then maybe go into business to start my own carpentry business. I don’t know which college I will go to since it depends on a lot of other things.
of gap year graduates said their gap year significantly added to their employability
of students planned to travel and experience other cultures with a gap year
of students said they want to take a break from the academic track in a gap year
of students said a gap year set them on their career path or academic major
What are your plans for next year? I will be taking a gap year to take some classes online and then work to make sure what I’m majoring in is what I want to do. My dad owns his own company and he builds houses and remodels, and I want to do interior design, so I can work with him on that to make sure that is what I want to do. I will also be taking classes I need to have to graduate like some of the English classes for credit and then the other classes I need for credit during some of my time off. What are your plans after your gap year? After this I plan on going to Ball State since they have a good program for what I want to do. What advice would you give to friends? When I tell my friends about what I am doing, they are also like, ‘I wish I had done that too’ because a lot of the time people just go into general studies and don’t exactly know what they are doing so this gives me a much better idea of what I want.
Hahn will be taking a gap year to take online classes and determine an area of interest.
Elizabeth Hahn
