“I chose (University of Detroit) because I went on a few visits, and the team just made me feel at home. It was awesome, and the coaches were awesome, and I just loved the school. I’ve been playing (lacrosse) since third grade and I’ve put so much work into it and everything that goes on in my life is pretty much from lacrosse.”
“I looked a lot of places, but ever since freshman year, the coaches were really interested in me and I fell in love with the campus and the coaches as well. I wanted to stay close, I’m really close with my family so that was a huge aspect in deciding where to go. I definitely wanted to play soccer, and IU gave me an opportunity to so it just kind of worked out.”
“I chose the school because I thought it was a good fit for me. It’s a really friendly environment up there; it’s a huge campus with a lot of people. It’s a really great school; they have great athletics along with great academics. It’s just a passion I have for the game. I’ve been playing (football) since I was a little kid. I just had a lot of fun playing it so I want to continue that.”

“I went there for a visit during the summer and I really like the campus and school, and the coaches are really cool so I committed in the fall and I’ve never looked back since. I think that soccer has helped me organize my studies and helped me prepare better as a student in life, so I think carrying that into college is something that I always wanted to do.”
“I chose Hanover because it just has a really good atmosphere and it is extremely beautiful there. I just kind of liked the close-knit community that they have and it makes it feel like a giant family. I like the competitiveness (of track and field) and it’s just a whole lot of fun to have a specific event that you’re good at and that you excel in.”
“One of my best friends on my team last year is going (to Spring Arbor University) to play soccer and he introduced me to the coach. I went up there for a visit, stayed with him, got to meet a couple professors, met the coach, and I liked all of that.”

Sibling Letters
Younger siblings of CHS seniors write letters to their graduating sibling. Senior Isabel Fray and her sister, sophomore Windle Fray To my sister Isabel Well, the day has finally come; you are graduating high school. I would attempt to give you advice before your freshman year of college, but you’ve taught me everything I know, so I wouldn’t be much help. From the day you held my hand on the bus on my first day of kindergarten until now, you’ve guided me through all my years of schooling, and I can’t imagine being apart for the first time. It is safe to say that you are the most beautiful being I have ever come across. Your energy, attitude and passion are qualities that I continue to strive for. Isabel, you do not realize that you truly can light up a room once you walk through the door. Kind-hearted people, like yourself, are a constant reminder that there is still good in the world. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you. I know that you have the ability to accomplish anything you set your mind to. Your intelligence will lead to success. You are going to change the world someday, and you don’t even know it yet. It will be so hard saying goodbye, but I know it’s time for you to start a new chapter of your life. Thank you for all that you have done for me over the years—for all the smiles, laughs, offering a shoulder to cry on and the
memories we have made. Most of all, thank you for showing me how to take on the role of being an older sister. If I am even half the big sister to Olivia that you were to me, she will be just fine. I will miss you (and your wardrobe) dearly. It is going to take a while to get used to not having our daily dance parties, duets and talks about the latest gossip. You always have been and always will be my best friend. Have the best time at college and the places it will take you. You finally get a “getaway” from our crazy family. I love you, Izzy. Love, Your sister, Windle Fray
Senior Mary Caltrider and her 11-year-old sister, Lucy Caltrider Dear Mary, I am going to miss you when you go to college. The dance parties and movie nights will be priceless memories to have when I miss you. In the past years, you have been a role model (and that has) never changed. Ever since you went to Carmel, I have wanted to be just like you, a leader and a great friend. You have taught me so much about growing up and being a leader. I am so sad you are leaving. I could never tell you how much I am going to miss you. I hope you have a good time at Purdue, and I’ll see you on “Little Siblings Weekend.” Love you! XOXO, Lucy

Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE?
“It seems cliché, but always study. Don’t procrastinate, because, the later into the year you get, the more you’re going to procrastinate. Senioritis is a real thing, but just make sure you keep working hard.”
“You shouldn’t worry about high school grades that much. You should focus on having fun. There’s no other point in your life where you can get away with doing nothing and not provide for yourself.”
Senior Samuel Dziwlik
Senior Troy Li
“Keep up with your schoolwork. You think that senior year is a breeze...but then...you realize that you were putting a bunch of stuff off ... It’s easier than the rest of your years but you have to keep up.”
“Here’s my advice: don’t think that senior year is going to be entirely easy. You still need to try and maintain your grades, but don’t stress too much. You’ll be fine.

What advice would you give to graduating seniors? MATTHEW ZHENG // Q&A
THE SENIOR ISSUE
Make sure that you balance your social life with your academic life. Get out there, meet new people and have fun. Do not forget to call home once a week and talk to your parents at a time when you don’t just need money so that they still think you miss them. I don’t know if that is true or not, but at least you can fake it.
Treat it like a day job from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Have set hours for academics as a job, in order to get your work done. (Don’t think) you’re going to be studying in your room (because) everybody will want you to socialize.
Your path is going to change many times throughout your life. Always do what you love doing and change directions if you’re not doing what you love. The real trick to doing well and getting where you want to be in life is just not quitting. It’s always harder than you think, and that’s why it’s worthwhile. I really love coming into the classroom and spending time with seniors and guiding
their learning. If I had to pick the best moments of this year, it’s the times when we may go off topic in class, and we just find something that we can all laugh about. A lot of times we’re laughing at ourselves or just the world in general, and it’s always fun to share that with a group of young adults.
Choose optimism over pessimism all the time. Look at your glass half full, and all kinds of wonderful things can happen. Look at it empty, and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Try not to procrastinate in college as much as you did in high school, but don’t put off your life. I have been blessed with wonderful seniors in my classes. I have been blessed
with getting to know the Capstone students - our “guinea pigs” to go through this new program. I have to say because of my students, I look forward to coming to school everyday. I can’t wait to see them and hear what they have to say. I love teaching seniors better than any other age group.

Meet Prom King Parker Amet, Prom Queen Lauryn Padgett CHRISTINE FERNANDO // Q&A
Have you ever dreamt of being Prom King/Queen? LP: No, not really. It was all pretty unexpected. I never really dreamed of being Prom Queen since I was younger or anything. It just kind of happened. PA: It just kind of happened.
Describe the moment that you found out you won. LP: I was really happy and excited. Everyone was so positive. Everyone was clapping. It was just really exciting, just so much energy. PA: I was really excited.
What was your favorite moment as Prom King and Queen? LP: I think my favorite moment was when we were doing the first dance, and Parker just went on the ground and started doing push-ups. That was pretty cool and spontaneous. Everyone was counting and cheering, and it was just really fun. PA: I like my crown.
Did you campaign for Prom King or Queen at all or was it just a surprise? LP: We didn’t really campaign very much. It was more of just a surprise, not something we really planned to happen. We asked our friends to vote for us, but that was basically it.
What would you like to say to the people who voted for you? LP: I’d just say “Thank you.” It meant a lot to us, and I can’t think of a more deserving Prom King than Parker, so just thank you.

you’ll definitely be a lot more willing to continue with it.
ACTIVITIES
What do you think you’ve done that has made you deserve distinguished grad?

Definitely the fact that I got involved a lot, and for me, I got involved not just for the sake of college applications. In every single one of the activities, I found that the reason I decided to continue with each one was because I always found some kind of value in it.

Nothing to Fear
Fear of the unknown can be an agent for self-discovery. CHRISTINE FERNANDO // COLUMN
W
hen i think about the future, i face an amalgam of excitement, restlessness and optimism, yet lingering underneath is an inordinate mass of fear. While I try to quell it with forced assurances, it’s impossible to deny that I’m afraid, afraid of choosing the wrong university, afraid of remaining undecided forever, afraid of never landing a job and, most of all, afraid of never realizing what I’m truly meant to do in this world. I know many with similar fears yet this fear may not be the hindrance we expect. Fear can be good. Fear is not merely an emotion; it is a source that informs us of what we must address. Therefore, fear shouldn’t lead us to avoid what frightens us; it should push us to confront it. That deepening fear we seniors now face—that fear of the unknown—should not be an enemy that shuts us down and pulls us into inaction; it should be an agent to extract our curiosity about ourselves and find what we want. FEAR IS NOTHING TO FEAR Fear can be your guide if you let it.
Key to Success
When you start feeling fear building in your gut, just ask it why it’s there. My fear told me it’s here because I’m afraid of failing as a journalist. Grilling my fear for answers is what revealed my true desires. So don’t just ask yourself what you want. Your desires can deceive you and turn into extensions of what others want or what is expected. Asking yourself what you fear and why is more useful because you can’t deny fear. Fear, unlike desire, is honest, undeceptive. So listen to it. Fear and the internal tension and questioning that it precipitates acts as a catalyst for self-discovery if you only remember to listen. As you look to the next chapter of your life, remember that fear will challenge you and test your limits, but it will also tell you what’s most important to you, what you must address, what you truly desire. Running from fear, therefore, is merely H running from self-discovery. Christine Fernando is a managing editor for the HiLite and will attend IU in the fall. Contact her at cfernando@hilite.org.
Do whatever you want, your way. NATALIA CHAUDHRY // COLUMN
i
do a lot of things out of spite. i wouldn’t say I’m a petty person, but I turned down a kid for prom with a “Nah, I’m good.” I didn’t really feel bad. Why? Because I discovered the key to success: do whatever you want, your way. I was once told if I missed any more school I wouldn’t be able to walk at graduation. I just started going on a lot of college visits. Life has a nice way of working out when you just do things how you want. Obviously, there are rules and lines you can’t cross, but once you stop living according to others’ expectations, high school’s actually pretty fun. Freshman year, I was adamant on denying the fact that I was brown. Well, my friends say I’m beige due to my awkward inability to tan despite being Middle Eastern. Adopting the common white girl persona, I was disgusting. And people still bashed me. I don’t know if I expected my North Face to shield me from the insults of the girl who thought I acted dumb to play down my smarts, but that definitely didn’t work. I spent half of high school trying to
THE SENIOR ISSUE
be someone I wasn’t, transforming more so into a mirror that reflected the personalities of my friend group at the time so I’d fit in. Somewhere along the way I started surrounding myself with people who didn’t make me feel like I needed to censor my personality. People who didn’t care if I was tone-deaf but still sang too loud or that I had a “slight” faux grunge phase. And so I realized in the ever-so-cliché manner that high school is about finding people who let you be you. Having them around helps you realize you don’t need permission to be you, and you can do things your own way. And, surprise, you actually stop caring about what other H people think. As Gump predicted before I existed, life is sweet and full of surprises. Mine is certainly no exception—the two biggest surprises for me were cross-country and HiLite. When I started in fifth grade, I could barely finish three kilometers. Before high school, I was hesitant to join HiLite because I thought I didn’t have writing talent. But as of today, I have never quit crosscountry since I started, and I’m currently writing to you as a perspectives editor. Regardless of whether I was or wasn’t surprised by my choices of activities, each one had valuable takeaways, such as perseverance for cross-country and the importance of taking initiative for HiLite. I could spend hours talking about all my activities and what I learned from them. While the lessons

motivated me to keep participating, they also made me develop a passion for them. That passion further motivated me to keep going at it. The resulting positive feedback loop in turn made my life so much happier because I was doing what I wanted to do. So try a new piece of chocolate in the box. You’ll never discover its taste if you don’t eat it. Likewise, you’ll never know what you’ll get from something until you try it. Second, if that piece of chocolate tastes good, eat more of it. In other words, if you really enjoy it, keep pursuing it. As eating your favorite chocolate makes you happy, so will doing something you like. Combine the two H to make for a sweet “end1n6.” Sarah Liu is a perspectives editor for the HiLite and will attend Purdue in the fall. Contact her at sliu@hilite.org.
