foreword | 03

Foreword As our (I’m including myself this year) last few days at CHS start going by, many of us are reflecting on what our legacy might be. You have heard when you arrived here four years ago, the quote from long time principal, Dale Graham, “you only take with you what you leave behind.” Our legacy is those things we have left behind. While we all take with us things that will make each of us better people, we hope what we are leaving behind us also made our school better. All of us who have been a part of Carmel High School can leave knowing that we have been a part of a very special place. We can all take pride in our contributions to the many successes that our school has enjoyed during our time here. So to some extent that is our legacy. What has Carmel done in my time here? We have all helped to make Carmel great; but, it is not enough to just count the trophies and remember the amazing accomplishments during our time. A legacy is not about what you do, but rather how you do it. Our true legacy is not games we have won or accolades we have received. It is how we have gone about our work here. Did we give our best? Were the decisions that we made, made with the best interests of students, friends and teammates in mind? Did we help to create and maintain an environment and culture where kids are

challenged, cared for and given opportunities to grow and to prepare for their futures? Our ability to determine our legacy is now behind us. It will be left for others to decide the answers to the questions above. What I hope that we are left with, is a sense of satisfaction knowing that we have loved our school and that we have invested our talents and efforts into making it a better place. Carmel High School is such a unique place. It is that rare combination of a long and treasured tradition of excellence faced with the never-ending task of never being satisfied and constantly searching for ways to get better. We have learned during our time at CHS that we must never allow the pride we feel turn into contentment. Contentment obstructs growth and improvement. I hope that our legacy is to have joined that long list of students and staff who have come before us, and helped make Carmel High School the amazing place it was when we arrived. Like they were to us, I hope that we can be examples and models to those who follow. That as we leave, taking so much with us from our time at CHS, we are satisfied that we also left so much of ourselves behind. As I have said to graduating classes for the last 13 years, “Because of our time here, we will always be Greyhounds, and we can believe that our school is better because we were here.”

Ray has been on staff for two years and will attend Harvard College next year.

To my brother, To me, you have always been my role model. I look to how you act to a problem and I follow. It’s like when you’re driving the car, dad’s in the shotgun, and I’m in the backseat watching. I remember how you showed me (not by purpose) that life is not how you think it is. Life is hard, and you have to work hard to life it. Now that you made it to Harvard, you have proven to me that you have to work hard for life. I felt a weight on my shoulder. I felt the burden that Mom and Dad expect me to go to Harvard and my fear/ burden is to fail. So, my solution is to look up to what you do. I don’t know how I can do when you go to college, when there’s nobody to control Amy. I don’t know how I will react when I see a problem I can’t solve. Every day, when I’m getting the eating utensils ready, I’ll think about you. I’ll think how there’s only four chopsticks and not five. I’m proud of you, honored that you are my big brother who went to Harvard. From the day you go to Harvard, I know, that one day, I will be driving that car, and you will be sitting next to me. Love, Allen Jiang

Senior Mike Pitz (left) and Junior Jacob Pitz (right) Dear Michael, Growing up as your brother has shaped my life. You’re the reason I got involved in student government, why I didn’t play basketball, and why I take the classes I take. Being the only child for the first time in my life is going to be a very boring experience, though I’ll enjoy being spoiled by Mom and Dad. Good luck at IU, I know you’ll kill it there. Love, Jacob Pitz

“It’s a prestigious college to go to, and I think later in life that will benefit me, having that kind of name stuck with me. Also, it helps grow my leadership abilities, and I think that’s important, especially if I want to be an officer and lead other people. twins and triplets Senior CHS sibling sets write letters to each other Twins Ally Fleckenstein (right) Dear sister, Being “roommates” for our whole lives has had its ups and downs. I truly prefer when we were babies in separate cribs, for sure, because you couldn’t really bother me from across the room at night. There’s a lot that I’ll miss, but you won’t be far. Luckily for you, you’ll always have me by your side. I know it’s not fair that I got all of the responsibility when we were born, so I’ll keep watching out for you and making sure you’re getting stuff done on time. Thank you for always listening to me rant and dealing with me in the mornings before I have coffee. I know we will both thrive in college and have the best four years of our lives, still as a team. I would like to note that it has been weird being a twin. Most people truly will never understand it, because I even don’t. But, it’s brought a lot of positive experiences for me. I like that we can be unique, but at the same time, look identical. I like all the questions we get; it’s a part of our lives and still will be in college. I was scared of losing that if we went to different colleges. Without you nearby, people wouldn’t know that I am an identical twin. So, I think I’ll keep you close! Also, both of our new roommates are named Olivia, but I found mine first! So, stop copying me. Like, really, you already copied my face. Keep being awesome, smile more and just being you! I love you, sister dear. I am so excited for college and hope that we can keep having fun adventures and confusing people wherever we go. Sincerely, Ally <3 P.S. Smile more :)

Growing up with an identical twin has always been a unique experience. Like most siblings, we’ve had our ups and our downs, but we are closer because of it all. Actually, we’re probably closer than most other siblings. Growing up, I remember the countless times we’ve spoken the same words at the same time or finished each other’s stories and sentences. Even though I’m three minutes older, you always acted like the “older sister.” In my eyes, you might as well be, with how much I look up to you. You’ve helped me countless times without expecting anything in return. I’m thankful that I have an identical twin—the best one there is. Love, Emily

Cooper Feeney (left)

Cooper and Carlee,

Dear Conner,

I can’t believe in four months we’ll be apart. We’ve been together for everything the past 18 years. Being without you just won’t be the same. I’m so excited to start a new chapter in our lives, but I’m going to miss you guys. You’ve been the most constant thing in my life, so to not have you with me is honestly going to be pretty hard.

We’ve been doing the same things together almost every day of our life. We’ve tried to beat each other in just about everything, whether it be grades, sports or games. That part of our life is about to come to an end. And while it will be different, I think it’s the best thing that could happen. You can finally not be called Cooper every day. Good luck in Bloomington, buddy; I’m excited to see what you do. I’m lucky to call you my brother.

Don’t forget to hang out with each other once in awhile. You’re lucky to be able to do that. Come visit me at IU too. You’ll probably want some excuse to get out of West Lafayette anyway, and hopefully you’ll be missing me as much as I’m going to miss you. Love you guys, Conner

Dear Carlee, Thankfully, you aren’t my brother; I’d get mixed up with two siblings instead of one. We’ll do different things in college, but one thing will be the same. Summer will end and we’ll move into our dorms; it’s only fitting we’ll get in our car and start a new drive to school. Together. Sincerely, Cooper

Carlee Feeney (center) Dear Cooper and Conner, We’ve shared some pretty special memories these past 18 years. You guys have not only been my two identical brothers, but my two best friends. Even if you would rather not admit it, you both are two of the most caring people I have ever met, and I appreciate both of you for always looking out for me. Although the time is approaching when we all won’t be under the same roof anymore, I have absolutely no doubt our special friendship will endure. No worries, Conner—I promise I won’t like Cooper more once you go to IU while we are at Purdue. I will always cherish the friends we’ve made together, the laughs we’ve shared and even the fact that we all shared the same car. Being a triplet is something special, and I have no doubt we will continue to make the most of our uniqueness. I’m so thankful to have brothers like you. Much love. Where did the money go? Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of renovations. Here are the biggest expenditures from our time.

Synthetic Turf and Stadium Renovations What: Track renovations, turf replacement, practice field constructions When: Completed for spring 2014 Cost: $2.4 million

What: Improved line times, allow students to serve themselves, more variety When: Completed for 2016-2017 Cost: $1.1 million

elliot choy

Photographer Elliot has been on staff for one year and will attend Vanderbilt University next year.

SPEAK UP! Do you think these expenditures were worth it? “I think some of the money could be going to other things. I think the balance between academics and athletics is not very even, and there is too much going to athletics. It would be nice to see the money go towards something like upgraded WiFi, because everyone uses that.” Senior Will Bankston

“I’m on the soccer team and I do think the locker room and field updates were needed, because they were pretty bad before and multiple teams use them. However, I don’t think (the changes in) main cafeteria was really that necessary and probably should have gone to academics.” Senior Ethan Abbott

“I do think that the renovations were really good, like the one in the main cafeteria was really nice. I do feel like Carmel High School has too much of an emphasis on sports, so I don’t know if spending $6.7 million on the weight lifting gym was appropriate. (I’d rather see the money) go to classroom supplies or increasing teacher wages.” Senior Joanne Song

“If the money was donated under no certain terms, I’d say (the money was not spent well). Classrooms and other academic fields could’ve been upgraded. More portable laptop carts and just making classrooms better in general is what I would like to see.” Senior Jacob “Jake” Hughes

GOING THE DISTANCE CHS couples share their perspectives on relationships senior elizabeth galus and senior john carroll Together for 3 years, 8 months Galus: “Having a person you can rely on for all four years of high school is really nice. After the initial year, it gets a lot better. You can be study buddies, which is super helpful. We’re going to different colleges, but I think we’ll be okay. We know how to manage without being together all the time, which is good. I’ll be living at home, but I still visit him on weekends if I want to. Or vice versa. But we can also FaceTime, so I don’t think it’s going to be that bad.” Carroll: “It’s been absolutely fun. First, she remembers my schedule when I forget it. Another great thing is we’re always there for each other, which is a nice thing. It kind of helps with teamwork stuff in a way because a relationship is all about teamwork.”

senior ali thrasher and senior kylan cole Together for 3 years, 7 months Thrasher: “A lot of people are afraid of long-term relationships in high school. I don’t think you should be because if you find somebody that treats you really nicely and is really good to you, I don’t think you should break up with them just to date other people. (Kylan’s) really sweet, and he’s always really good to me. He’s also just one big, dumb idiot, and he makes me laugh.” Cole: “A lot (of) people are immature during high school, and they’re just looking to have fun. But with someone that you can trust with all of your heart, you have that connection and understanding that, ‘We know this is high school, but at the same time we know we can trust each other.’ We know we can be mature about this and attack everything head on. That’s probably the best gift she’s given me.”

What was your reaction when you learned you were the distinguished grad? For me, I was just really excited. You know, its really a huge honor, obviously, with all the kids in our class that have done so much and have been so involved. I was just really genuinely excited to know that I am representing them and have the opportunity to speak at graduation. What advice would you give someone looking to become the distinguished grad? I would really say don’t focus on becoming the distinguished grad. Just do things you enjoy. For me, that’s really how I treated my high school experience. I just found things I really liked and got involved in them, and it just worked out in the end that I ended up being the distinguished grad. Its not something that I would say you should focus on trying to accomplish because then you’re probably doing things you don’t want to be doing. It’s more just doing what you enjoy and finding those things.

Tell us a little bit of how you got here. E: Conner was in California when we got nominated and I just got to sign a piece of paper and then I realized like “Oh I got nominated” and then we tried to get out of it and then we couldn’t so then we were just like “might as well get king and queen then” so I campaigned really hard. C: I just kind of watched the campaign go along. She went really hard in it. It paid off.

What are your plans for next year? I’m going to be attending Notre Dame (University) as a Malpass scholar so I’ll be studying finance and working in the investment office there, interning each year. These are some activities Gartenhaus has participated in. Cross-country Track German National Honors Society DECA Band Key Club
