MOST ABLE POLICY

HILL WEST PRIMARY SCHOOL MOST ABLE POLICY At Hill West Primary School we recognise that each child is unique, displaying a range of abilities. It is our policy to enable all children, including those who are most able to develop their full potential academically, socially and spiritually. We plan our teaching and learning to enable each child to reach their highest level of personal achievement. In recognising and providing for those children who are most able we are responding not only to the school’s vision statement but also to local and national initiatives.

AIMS    

To meet the educational, social and personal needs of those children identified as gifted and talented or most able. To develop a consistent approach throughout the school which caters for the most able pupils is clearly understood and implemented. To develop effective partnerships between the school, parents and outside agencies. To develop staff expertise, recognition and provision for most able pupils.

IDENTIFICATION At Hill West Primary School a variety of strategies and data will be used to identify the most able pupils. It must be remembered that identifying higher ability can be difficult since different abilities emerge at different ages and many factors may contribute to a child’s ability at any stage in their school career. Identification must therefore be an ongoing process. The strategies used will include:    

Testing Teacher observation and assessment Pupil tracking Performance criteria eg sport and creative arts.

PROVISION The provision at Hill West reflects the child’s individual needs including their emotional and social needs. A range of provision will be used and will include elements of the following: 

Use of pupil groupings to enable children to work with others of similar ability

Extension where pupils are following a common curriculum but use more challenging resources/ questions

Working with other institutions which can provide expertise in particular areas. E.g. Arthur Terry Secondary School, peripatetic music teachers, Bishop Vesey Grammar School etc.

REVIEW AND DEVELOPMENT The Head Teacher / Inclusion Manger will be responsible for developing and monitoring the provision for most able pupils. At Hill West we are continually reflection on our practice for the most able and ask ourselves the following questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

What provision is currently available for the identified children? Does it meet the needs of those children and could it be improved? How is the provision for these children identified/ reviewed within the common planning /monitoring framework? How effective are the partnerships with parents/other agencies to support these children? What budget implications does the development have?

This policy will be reviewed annually. Policies/Gifted and Talented November 2015
