HILL WEST SPORT SPRING 2 2015 Wow! What a half term it has been! Firstly, Year 4 have been enjoying cricket lessons from Warwickshire Cricket Club and also loved the opportunity to take part in the level 1 Bikeability course. Meanwhile, Year 3 have also been developing their cricket skills with Mr Stonebridge at Arthur Terry. Of course we can’t forget the hugely successful Inter-house Cross Country race and visit from Olympic Athlete Bex Wilson!

On Tuesday 24th March, Hill West welcomed Rebekah Wilson, an Olympic Athlete, to visit all the children in school.
Y6 Handball
She led a sponsored circuit, which involved four different exercises. The whole circuit was kicked off with a minute of spotty dogs. The lively music boomed out of the speakers and the facilitator cheered all of us on as our continuous adrenaline heated. The second workout was a sixty second session of leg drives. By this time our hearts felt like they were beating twice as fast! The following sixty seconds of action was filled by a group of push ups. The push ups really tested our upper body strength. The fourth and final event was (a cool down) a series of jumps selected by the guest of honour – Rebekah Wilson, (The world-champion bobsleigher). Then she gave us each a high-five and we all received a sticker. After all the children had completed the circuit, we were treated to an assembly where Rebekah told us all about Bobsleighing and her road to success (sometimes encountering failure). Everyone had a fantastic time and were inspired by the visit. By Alexander and Dylan, Year 6

A big well done to all children who participated!
Y6 Football Team Unfortunately, on Tuesday 24th March, Hill West Football team lost against Whitehouse Common in the Sutton Cup Quarter-Final. Even though it wasn’t such a good game as we lost, we still played well. Whitehouse Common scored two goals early on which meant that Hill west had to battle hard to fight back. Despite Kahrel scoring a last minute goal, it wasn't enough to get us through to the semi-finals. The final score was 2-1 to Whitehouse Common. At the end of the match we shook hands with Whitehouse Common and Lois was awarded player of the match. By Owen Wall, Hill West Football Team
Pupil Spotlight - Lois Sercome, Year 6 This year selected children have been participating in a Talented Sports Group, which has been run by the Arthur Terry School sports teacher, Mr Stonebridge. This enabled these children to experience new sports, which they may not have had the chance to take part in outside of school and it helped them to progress in the physical activities they were already enjoying. Everyone who knows me will definitely agree that I LOVE SPORT! So I was delighted to be chosen as part this group.

We started off going to the Arthur Terry School to have tuition in many different sports. Mr Stonebridge then made it even more exciting for us by organizing trips to various sports venues. We have visited: a dry ski slope, where we all had a go at skiing; Little Aston Tennis Club, where we played in games against each other and Aston Wood Golf Course where we had a go on the driving range. We have enjoyed these experiences very much and have learnt new skills to use in the future. On our last trip, Mr Stonebridge surprised us by taking us to the Alexandra Stadium to experience athletics. We were lucky enough to meet Matthew Hudson-Smith who is trained by Tom Hadley, a previous P.E. teacher at Arthur Terry. Matthew Hudson-Smith is a twenty year old track and field sprinter who specializes in the 400 meters. He has already won Silver and Gold at the European Championships and is on target to perform for Great Britain in the next Olympics. In addition to sprinting with him, we talked about how athletes have to lead a healthy lifestyle. This includes training every day and eating lots of fruit and vegetables. He went on to explain that being healthy includes what you drink and told us about the sugar content in some popular drinks we all love. This was really interesting and made us realize that being an athlete is not an easy job! I feel really privileged to have taken part in the Talented Sports Group and wish to thank Mr Stonebridge for making it so much fun!
