“CIRCLE OF LIFE” A recent aerial photograph of Grasslands and Harbour Landing (South Regina) tells an incredible story of the rate of real estate growth over the last decade. Less than a decade ago, this site was nothing more than vast farmland. And now, Grasslands is nearly fully developed with over 70 retailers and is surrounded by nearly 14,000 residents. As one project comes to a close, another comes to life as you can see the early beginnings of Westerra - Harvard’s latest mixed-use residential community - take shape in the backdrop of the photo.

HARVARD GOES BORDER TO BORDER WITH A NEW PARTNERSHIP IN ALBERTA
At The Hill Companies, one of the things we are most proud of is that we are constantly exploring new business areas and willing to adapt our current business units to meet new demand. It’s a simple fact that you don’t become a 115-year old company without leaving your comfort zone and having the courage to blaze a new trail when the time calls for it. What if Apple had stuck to creating PC’s? Or if Amazon was happy with just being an online book store? Without their vision and courage to shake things up and try something new, we may have never heard of ITunes or Amazon Prime. These companies had the vision to remain leaders in their industries and, much like Harvard Property Management has done with their exciting new partnership with ATCO, the vision to take their business to a new level. For the last decade, Harvard Property Management’s Alberta division has quietly made a name for itself as one of the leaders in third-party property management, handling operational duties for a wide range of retail and office properties in Alberta’s larger centers (Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, etc). While the business was undoubtedly successful, a new path for HPMI in Alberta was forged when Harvard’s leadership identified an incredible growth opportunity in the form of a new partnership with ATCO managing their facilities all across Alberta. If you aren’t familiar with ATCO, they are a large Canadian company that specializes in Structures & Logistics, Electricity, Pipelines & Liquids, and Retail Energy (But you may know them best from seeing their site trailers around construction work sites). After preparing and submitting a formal proposal to ATCO, Harvard was ultimately selected as the successful bidder in February 2017, essentially igniting a new path for Harvard in Alberta and the birth of ATCO Facility Management, or AFM for short.

With this new partnership, Harvard has taken on the responsibility of managing all of ATCO’s various office facilities across Alberta – a portfolio of over 130 properties comprising nearly two million square feet. “The ATCO portfolio is a diverse collection of properties, ranging from small-town agency offices, all the way up to large commercial offices” said David Jones, now General Manager of ATCO Facility Management. “Many of them also come with other amenities such as material storage areas, warehouses, and workshops for example, so it’s something a little out of our comfort zone but we are looking forward to the challenge.” The other wildcard of the new partnership is geography. Unlike previous properties that were mainly located in large urban centers like Calgary and Edmonton, the ATCO portfolio of properties is peppered all across the province, adding another level of complexity to the logistics and staffing functions of the business. “Another new challenge we’ve tackled is how to coordinate enough people and time to ensure these properties receive the care they deserve,” comments David. “At this point, we have operations staff who will work out a larger center, but dedicate a large part of their week to travelling to remote facility centers with a leased company vehicle.” Speaking of people, one of the most exciting aspects of this new partnership is the addition of a new group to our Harvard family.
In total, 41 operations staff have been brought into the fold and will join the current staff of HPMI to round out the new Facility Management team. “Its been a whirlwind couple of months, but we are very thankful to have such a great team to help get this off the ground,” said David, when asked what the process has been like assembling the team. “We still have a few positions left to fill, but with the new folks and the knowledgeable staff we already had we are in great shape for the future. I’d also like to give special mention to Ken Haddock and Kevin Robinson on their tireless work over the last year.” If you’re wondering what “facility management” entails and how it is different from regular property management, there are quite a few differences. The new Facility Management team is broken down into four primary areas that are complemented by Accounting, Purchasing, and Facility Planning personnel. The first is Facility Maintenance, which is pretty straight forward and involves the upkeep and repair of all things related to the facility structure and the site. Some examples of these items are foundation, roof, plumbing, HVAC units, power/lighting/fire alarms, waste management, elevators, loading dock equipment, fencing, and parking fields, just to name a few. The second function of the Facility Services division is Tenant Services. This area deals with the day-to-day functionality of the property and ensuring all aspects of the tenants’ workplace is working properly. This includes everything commonly found in Property Management (tenant and maintenance requests) but also adds extra services like ordering office supplies and stocking the kitchen with things like cutlery/coffee/etc, as well as being responsible for the A/V technology within the conference rooms. Lastly, Harvard has set up Capital Construction and Facility Planning teams that will work with each facility on conceptual design, space planning, tenant improvement projects, and environment programs aimed at maximizing the effectiveness of each facility. It’s now been ten months since Harvard has officially assumed the management of the ATCO portfolio, and while it’s certainly been a hectic time pulling it all together, David and his team are settling in nicely. “We’ve come so far since taking over these properties on July 1st, and it’s just such a credit to the people and process we have here at Harvard. Early reports from the folks with ATCO have been incredibly positive and it’s great to know things are only going to get better as we better understand the roles and our properties moving forward.”

The Eye in the Sky…the Keeper of the Keys…the Guardian of the Gates…AKA Ryan Knutson. Alright, maybe I just made all of those names up, but they still give a pretty accurate description of what our Technical Support Administrator —Ryan Knutson— does for us here at Harvard. Read on to find out all about the inner workings of Ryan, and what lead him to where he is now. Originally from Saskatoon, Ryan began his life in the Queen City when he made the move to attend the University of Regina for a Sport Management program. In between school years he would still head back to Saskatoon for the summers, however, eventually decided to stay in Regina in 1997. After two years spent at the University of Regina, Ryan says he realized that the “university life wasn’t exactly for me, but the university life was, and after the first two years I felt like I was just wasting my time, so I decided to start working instead”. Now, this wasn’t Ryan’s first foray into the workforce, as his first job was a common staple of many peoples childhood, delivering papers. Interestingly enough, Ryan also worked in a slaughterhouse for a summer job, which he admits was actually “pretty awesome, because the whole process was just so interesting”. The one job that eventually started Ryan on to his career path here at Harvard, however was not that job at the slaughterhouse (surprising, I know), it was when he started working a security position for our iconic Hill Centre II downtown tower. From that position Ryan transitioned into a role as Call Centre Representative in 2001. Responsible for an-

swering service calls, interfacing with tenants, and dispatching Building Operators, Ryan immediately gained an in-depth understanding of how our building and property management operations ticked. It was from that position that Ryan moved into his current role, Technical Support Administrator. Now, when asked what a typical day might look like for him, Ryan says that his days are anything but typical. “I always come in planning to do one thing, then something else will come up, maybe I’ll have to find some security footage, train someone on something, deal with a security issue, really it’s a mixture of a lot of things. That’s my favourite part about the job. I never have the same day twice…funny enough it’s also probably the worst part about the job sometimes, but overall I love it”. Whether he is busy managing the security systems for Regina downtown, overseeing the Workspeed software (which is Harvard’s Computerized Maintenance Management System), helping out with the Call Centre, or managing the access keys and security clearances for all the Building Operators, Ryan is constantly on the move and adapting to an ever dynamic working environment.
‘‘
‘‘
Over the years Ryan has been a key member on many of Harvard’s larger projects, however, a few in particular stick out in his mind. One of those being when Harvard made the big switch between the old security system and the new one, roughly 10 years ago. With the old system breaking down, there wasn’t much of a choice to switch over to a newer system, which made the process interesting since “we essentially just patched everything for a few months until the - Ryan Knutson new system was in place”. Most recently, Ryan has been an integral member of the organizations switch to the new Workspeed software. Working alongside Michelle LeBlanc and our many tenants, Ryan has been working to make sure that our tenants are going to see what they want to see, and that our team is going to get everything out of it that they need.
That’s my favourite part of my job. I never have the same day twice.
Outside of the office walls, Ryan likes to put his sports background to good use, and has been coaching football here in Regina for the past 16 years. The past 11 of those years have been at Winston Knoll Collegiate, coaching the offensive line for the high school program. Between the end of August to (he always says he hopes) the end of November, football pretty much takes up all his time. Naturally, with such a heavy volunteer commitment, it’s no surprise that by the time the football season draws to a close, Ryan is ready for a bit of rest and relaxation. That is why every year for the past seven years now, Ryan has taken a bit of time to head down to the relaxing tropical paradise of Cabo, Mexico to enjoy the hot sun, white sand beaches, and a slower pace than he is used to back home. Now, it wouldn’t be a true interview if we never asked Ryan the classic question…”Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” After a few thoughtful, introspective seconds he told us that “you know, I’m not much of a planner. I just always know things are going to change, so I’ve learned to just let it go and see what happens”. This attitude and approach to life has not only served Ryan very well in his personal life, but also through his career with Harvard, as he notes that a key to being successful in his line of work has been “being open to change and being adaptable… Things are constantly changing and evolving in our company, and in the industry as a whole, you always have to be ready and open to change and grow alongside it”.

GETTING TO KNOW AN IN DEPTH Q & A SESSION WITH ALYSE STAUCH, FINANCIAL SERVICES ADVISOR WITH HARVARD WESTERN
What is Harvard Western Insurance?
Harvard Western Insurance is an insurance brokerage. We offer a full range of products ranging from home and auto, to business and family needs, we basically take care of all our customers’ insurance needs! What do you do with Harvard Western Insurance?
There are always things going on within the company, there are always fun little competitions and games going on that really keep people active and moving around. There is also a lot of opportunities for educational growth and volunteering as well, which is great. What would you say the most overlooked insurance product is for the average consumer?
In your opinion, what differentiates Harvard Western Insurance from other competitors?
Well, I’d say most people know about life insurance… but it’s probably the living benefits which is more so critical illness and disability insurance. A lot of people have disability through work which is really great, because it’s there to protect your income in the event of a disabling injury. The critical illness, however, is one that not many group plans cover…some do, but a lot of companies don’t have it included. Essentially it’s insurance that can cover you for up to 25 major illnesses, such as: Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, and Heart Disease or Stroke. A lot of people know someone who has been impacted by one of those diseases, so those unfortunate situations are very relatable for people, it’s just not the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of insurance.
I think it all goes back to how we can truly meet all of our clients insurance needs, and cover them no matter what type of product they are looking for (Home, farm, business, etc.). We truly are a one-stop-shop. Another big bonus of doing business with us is that we strictly have our five locations around Saskatchewan. That gives our clients the benefit of being able to grow a real relationship with us because we are a local company, while still experiencing the convenience of having multiple locations for them to visit.
What’s your favourite part about working at Harvard Western Insurance?
When people come in we always do a full needs analysis for them. This way we can make sure they know about all these types of products, and how each one can help them. How important would you say life insurance is?
Very, I think. Especially if you value your families wellbeing, and more specifically their financial wellbeing. If something was to happen to you, life
|
What is something people typically don’t know about life insurance?
I think a lot of people don’t realize there are so many options with life insurance. I think a lot of people expect that they will just come in and sit down, then I will tell them what they’re getting and they have to pay for that. We really just sit down together and have a conversation to understand how we are able to work within their budget to make sure their needs are covered. Another thing is that I think a lot of clients don’t realize is what the difference is between bank coverage and individual coverage (which is what we offer). They don’t realize when they go in to a bank and get a mortgage or line of credit or vehicle loan, that they have other options outside of the bank to cover those loans…and they might even be better options to be honest.
I’m a Financial Services Advisor, more specifically, I’m responsible for helping clients with individual, life, disability, critical illness, and long-term care insurance and also long-term health products.

insurance can play a big role in protecting your family. Now, it’s going to vary for each individuals in how much they need to be insured for, but at the end of the day I think everyone has a need for it.
E D I T I O N 55 - T HE HIL L STREE T N E WS
What would you recommend to someone who wants to know more about their life insurance?
Set up a meeting…that’s the biggest thing. Even if you already have insurance, bring it in and we can do a review and make sure you understand what you’re covered for. We really just want to help the customers make sure they’re properly covered, because as their lives change and evolve, so should their insurance coverage. It could be getting married, buying a home, or having kids, really any major life event can change your insurance needs, so I think it’s really important to just make sure you are setting up those meetings.
HARVARD WESTERN INSURANCE’S NEWEST DEPARTMENT: THE CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
Over the past year, Harvard Western Insurance has been working hard to improve operational efficiency and client satisfaction through the implementation of a Central Processing Unit (CPU). The unit, made up of four insurance advisors and located in our Quance Street location, is now processing all of the paperwork for our four city branches. In preparation for the implementation of the CPU, HWI consulted with other brokerages to determine what policies and procedures would work best for us. For the better part of 2017, the team met to outline what the unit should look like and how it would best meet our needs. The goal of the CPU is to standardize workflows and improve efficiency while freeing up time for our Insurance Advisors; with paperwork off their desks, they have more time to proactively assist their clients. The staff was selected for the unit through a combination of interviews and personality profiles, and the CPU members underwent two full days of procedural training to ready them for the unit’s start on Nov 1. The first month of the CPU has been a great success, with the unit exceeding our service standards. We look forward to the great potential for opportunity within the unit in the next year and beyond.

P RO P E RT Y F E AT U R E Have you noticed a different look and feel of Hamilton Street in Downtown Regina? In 2017, Harvard Developments unveiled Shoppes on Hamilton, a redevelopment project including a variety of upscale boutiques nestled amongst the various restaurants, coffee shops and offices in downtown Regina. Located on the 1800 block of Hamilton Street, Shoppes on Hamilton features a main-floor shopping destination that offers nearly 10,000 sq.ft. of retail space, home to various fashion and lifestyle retailers. You will find luxury clothing, gowns, eyewear, footwear, makeup and beauty products from various retailors around the world. These stores feature bright, inviting and luxurious atmospheres that one wouldn’t normally expect in our small city. Complementing the successful construction of Agriculture Place, the Shoppes on Hamilton is a direct result of Harvard’s long-term business plan to revitalize Regina’s downtown. Although most of us have always seen this area as the vibrant hub it is today, it was not always been presented as such. Harvard’s Leasing Manager, Aaron McDougall, recalls what the 1800 block of Hamilton looked like prior the redevelopment. “We have always had retail on this street, but the plain buildings and uneven sidewalks needed to be restructured in order to create a more dynamic experience.” Harvard brought an entire new streetscape to Hamilton Street, creating a significantly more attractive storefront, which ties everything together from Hill Centre Tower I around the corner to FCC Tower. Aside from the visual appeal, one of the most exciting aspects of this new development are the tenants. With the desire to create a modern and chic environment, Harvard also wanted to cater to what was already there. “We certainly targeted fashion-focused tenants. With Colin O’Brian and NWL already situated in this area, we invited more fashion and beauty stores to expand from other cities into our spaces.” This the one-stop shop destination has now become known

as the Shoppes on Hamilton Fashion and Beauty District with plenty of inventory for both men and women. Today, all spaces have been successfully leased, with Factory Optical being the last to open in Spring 2018. McDougall says that most tenants have been up and running for about six months and the feedback they have received from the community has been amazing. Shoppes on Hamilton currently features the following retailers: • • • • • • • • •
Colin O’Brian Man’s Shoppe Queen V Fashion House Swank Shoe Lounge Sara Lindsay – The Makeup Store Smith & Best Male Room Two Fifty Two Boutique Eyes on Hamilton Factory Optical (Spring 2018) Green Spot Café
Through this redevelopment, Harvard has generated an exclusive environment for its tenants, as well as a unique shopping experience for the residents of Regina. “What we have created has brought a little pocket to Regina, which will not only appeal to the downtown professional market, but will also attract those visiting our city.” Since the Shoppes on Hamilton are located in the bustling area of downtown, McDougall believes the high volume traffic has increased tenant awareness, making the debut for each store even more successful. So, who says you have to travel elsewhere to experience such luxury? Whether you live in Regina or plan to visit in the future, we highly encourage you to visit the Shoppes on Hamilton. Downtown Regina has so much to offer and Harvard could not be more proud of the success this project has brought our city.

Claudette Kol made the move from our Saskatchewan Retail Team after accepting the term position of Property Management Administrator for the Regina Downtown Office Team. She has transitioned into Jennifer Morton’s role for the duration of her maternity leave. Redevelopment of the concourse level of 201 Portage in Winnipeg is now complete. In November, a VIP reception celebrated the opening of the new stateof-the-art 1,600 foot Conference Centre that is now available rent-free to tenants. In addition, an amazing new concept Food Court with over 2,000 square feet of seating and lounge area was also unveiled. The anchor restaurant, Mercatino Fresh Food Co. offers selections of the freshest local foods as well as providing catering services. Additional tenants will also ensure there are a variety of food choices to satisfy every taste. Thank you to our Winnipeg team for putting on a wonderful event!
In Regina, approximately 2,500 tenants of our downtown office towers celebrated the spirit of the season in our building lobbies over a three day period in mid-December. Everyone was treated to their choice of shortbread cookies, hot chocolate from Atlantis Coffee Company, apple cider from Good Earth and the gift of a Canada 150 silver bell Christmas tree ornament. Thank you to the PR Promo Team and HPMI staff who volunteered for all their hard work in the planning, set up and assistance during the events! After a busy and activity filled December, the New Year began with the commencement of audit planning. The auditors are scheduled to arrive in the near future with the hope that audit season will be wrapped up by midMarch. In addition, the annual PAL planning and appraisal processes are in full swing. As a result of our new contract for an office property in northwest Calgary, HPMI retained and welcomed the existing staff members associated with the property referred to as “Veteran’s Way” on January 1. The Property Manager, Oren Lamon has also taken on the existing ATCO portfolio of David Jones. Oren has spent the last seven years at Veteran’s Way and worked with a local developer. Ken Brohman and Alex Fu will remain in their roles of Building Operator and Maintenance Assistant, respectively. Ken, who has been at the property with Oren over the last seven years, will maintain approximately 160,000 square feet of office space and underground parking. Alex will continue to assist Ken with building operations. He has earned his Third Class Power Engineer’s Certificate and possesses extensive experience in plant and manufacturing facilities. He and Ken have worked together for five and one half years. Terri Klyne was pleased to announce Saskatchewan’s Retail Team had undertaken the management of a new joint venture retail development known as Acre 21 on January 3. The retail site is located in southeast Regina consisting of 21 acres. Upon completion, it will house approximately 200,000 square feet of retail space. The property will be anchored by Save On Foods. If the beginning of the New Year is any indication, 2018 is shaping up to be a very busy and exciting year for HPMI!
AL SCHAMBER RETIREMENT
“Al really has been a fantastic addition to our Alberta team and a great ambassador for Harvard in Central Alberta. Right from the start you could see that he was a great fit for his role and that he was the right person for our team: he was very customer service focused, conscientious, very analytical and hard working. He always gave it 120%. He inherited an older building full of challenges, Centre 5010 in Red Deer, and over his tenure with Harvard he upgraded many of the building systems, facilitated many common area improvements and changed the operations to the point where he had everything just “humming”. Al treated the building as if it was his own home and it showed each time our management team came to visit Red Deer. Al, thank you for sharing your talents with us - it was an honour to serve alongside with you and I’m proud to have had you as part of our team in Alberta. Wishing you many happy retirement years ahead. Enjoy the grandkids and the slower pace of life.” Best wishes! - Tony Prsa Vice President Alberta Operations Harvard Property Management

CORPORATE SERVICES L AU R E T TA B EL I VE AU
Congratulations to James Nixon on passing The Common Final Exam (CFE). Congratulations to Kim Aldous on her 10th anniversary with Harvard Developments and Lauretta Beliveau on her five year anniversary. Here are some RRSPs & TFSAs information to consider……….With the turn of the calendar to 2018, the preparation and filing of your 2017 personal tax return will soon be approaching. One popular method to reduce your tax liability (and save for your retirement) is to make an additional contribution to your registered retirement savings plan (RRSP). The deadline to make an RRSP contribution and deduct it on your 2017 tax return was March 1, 2018. The amount that you are able to contribute for 2017 (your “contribution limit”) is reported on the Notice of Assessment you received from Canada Revenue Agency after filing your 2016 personal tax return. This amount, less any RRSP contributions you have already made in 2017 (including those made in 2017 directly to the Harvard Group RRSP through payroll deduction), is the additional amount that can be contributed. If you have already contributed the maximum amount to your RRSP or are looking for another tax-efficient way to accumulate savings, you might consider investing in a tax-free savings account (TFSA). Unlike an RRSP, a contribution to a TFSA is not deductible in computing

your income subject to tax (nor taxable when withdrawn from the plan). However, any income earned within the TFSA is not subject to tax, either at the time it is earned or when it is withdrawn from the TFSA. As a result, it is an effective way to accumulate savings without incurring tax. Note that although the name implies that amounts contributed are held in a savings accounts, a TFSA can invest in a variety of investments, including GICs, term deposits, mutual funds, bonds, and shares of publicly traded companies. There are annual limits on the amount that can be contributed to a TFSA. Any unused amount not contributed in a year carries forward to subsequent years. With the TFSA limit set at $5,500 for 2017 and 2018, the total room available in 2018 for someone who has never contributed and has been eligible for the TFSA since its introduction in 2009 is $57,500. Your RRSP contribution limit and your TFSA contribution room can also be seen through Canada Revenue Agency’s My Account e-services (https://www. canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/eservices-individuals/account-individuals.html) or you can phone Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281 to get the balances. CADENCE AT GATEWAY BREAKS GROUND - CONSTRUCTION AHEAD OF SCHEDULE In May 2017, Harvard Investments broke ground on Cadence at Gateway, the master planned community in Mesa, Arizona. Construction progress remains ahead of schedule and infrastructure is quickly going into place with site preparation for the 12,000 square foot community center underway. Construction of homebuilder models also remain on track in order for homebuilders to begin sales by late 2018 or early 2019. David Weekley Homes, a wellrespected National builder, recently signed on as the fifth builder in Phase One of the development. Weekley joins Lennar, Pulte, CalAtlantic and Gehan Homes. Construction highlights include: •
Completing sewer line and storm drainage infrastructure for Phase One
•
Completing the main entry on Ellsworth Road
•
Installation of the Cadence monument tower and signage
Public interest continues to grow as evident through social media. With five high-quality builders, nine neighborhoods, quality amenities and resident-only parks, consumers are starting to spread the word about this one-of-a-kind community in Mesa. HARVARD BROADCASTING MESSAGE FROM CAM CAM COWIE
“OK Google … What’s the next big disruption for Radio?”.....“Here’s what I found … Smart Speakers won’t be a disruption, they’ll be a huge opportunity for Radio!” Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home offer a robust opportunity for radio to regain ground in the home. The rapid adoption of smart speakers and voice assistants means consumers will no longer be constrained by mechanical inputs or icons on screens. Whatever audio content they want will be a spoken phrase away. Industry experts forecast 75% of households will have a smart speaker by 2020 and that smart speakers will have grown from zero to 75% household penetration in just 5-6 years. It took eight years for smartphones to reach that level of adoption and social media still isn’t to that level after 13 years. The emergence of voice assistants and smart speakers is driving new consumer habits that are changing how audio content is accessed and consumed. This potentially represents a big opportunity for broadcast radio and a renaissance for audio. The voice assistant access to audio may be one of the most important technology shift for radio since the industry’s early days. Smart speakers are becoming a device that is used in multiple rooms in the house—just as radio once was. The family room is its primary destination, at 52%, followed by the kitchen at 24% and master bedroom at 12%. The current research also shows that 5% of owners have a device in a second bedroom and 7% in other rooms. Playing music remains at the forefront with smartspeaker users, 68% of smartspeaker owners reported listening to music on the devices regularly. Digging deeper, 38% use their Alexa or Google Home for listening to AM/FM radio, 32% for AM/FM news talk, and 22% for AM/FM sports radio. Not only are people already using smartspeakers for radio, there is significant room to grow and capture more of the music listening time. A big part of the opportunity for radio is consumers are in the process of establishing new listening habits. While mobile devices started chasing radios out of kitchens and living rooms after the 2007 introduction of the iPhone, the smart speaker has started to reverse that trend by putting an internet-connected speaker with direct access to radio streams back into the home. Listeners will simply ask their voice assistant to play what they want. That may be owned music, a streaming service or radio. However, radio will be on an equal footing and always just a couple of words away. This enables radio’s personality, talent and local branding to once again assert its listener relationship advantage to maintain and even grow its share of ear! “OK Google … Play X929.”

100.7 CRUZ FM & KRAZE 101.3 - RED DEER, AB
KATIE EMMETT
This fall, 100.7 CRUZ FM debuted an exciting new contest with “CRUZ TO VEGAS” – where we sent two lucky listeners to see some amazing acts! Our first trip was awarded at the end of September, when we sent Noelle Johnston to Las Vegas to see Billy Idol at the iconic House of Blues. Next, Ron Seifried and his wife Donna took in the legendary Guns N’ Roses at T-Mobile Arena on November 17th! Over on KRAZE 101-3, we saw the return of “WHAT’S SHAKIN’?!” – sponsored by Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop. Three times a day, listeners would tune in to hear what item we’re shaking in our Martini shaker, then call in to guess ‘What’s Shakin’. Guess correctly – and they win! Get it wrong, and we add another $101 to the pot. This fall, we handed out over $10,000 to some very lucky winners! 100.7 CRUZ FM also introduced a new initiative this winter by popping up all over Red Deer doing good deeds for the community and rewarding our awesome listeners. Our first stop was to some of our amazing First Responders at Red Deer’s newest fire Ssations! Music Director Cam Webb, Promo Katie & Promo Aaron stopped by with some coffee and timbits to say thank you for all they do! Lucky for us, they took us on a tour and showed us the in’s and out’s!
96.3 CRUZ FM - SASKATOON, SK
ZOE VASSOS
96.3 Cruz FM, along with Mawson Health & Fitness and TLC @ Home, held the 4th annual “Saskatoon’s Greatest Gifts for Kids” on Saturday November 18th at Lawson Heights Mall in Saskatoon. Cruz was live on location at the mall for the entire day, broadcasting live and taking donations of new toys or cash to be given to local children at community schools in Saskatoon. TLC @ Home puts together shoeboxes filled with necessities such as socks, toothbrushes, soap, mitts and toques, toys and healthy snacks! Over 900 less fortunate children in Saskatoon benefited from TLC @ Home this Christmas. For the fourth consecutive year, 96.3 CRUZ FM teamed up with Cameco for the annual “Cameco Cares Concert Series.” This concert series was a four year initiative by Cameco and Cruz FM with funds raised each year for a different hospital foundation in Saskatoon. The 2017 edition of the “Cameco Cares Concert Series” featured CRUZ FM artist TRAIN! The Delta Bessborough Gardens played host to a crowd of over 2,500 people on a warm early September evening. Through ticket sales and other generous partner donations, the event raised $200,000 for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. Through the 4 year initiative, the “Cameco Cares Concert Series presented by Cruz FM” has raised over $800,000 for Saskatoon Hospital Foundations.

X92.9 - CALGARY, AB
GINETTE OUIMET
X92.9’s evening host Graham Mosiman was a keynote speaker at the Annual Canadian Mental Health Association’s YouthSMART – Youth Mental Health Summit held on Thursday, October 19th. The summit brought together students and teachers from various local junior high and senior high schools to learn about mental health, mental illness and stigma, while challenging common stereotypes and misconceptions. Hosted by CMHA Calgary’s YouthSMART, in partnership with The Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre, the summit featured large group presentations, speakers, an experiential exercise, discussions and action planning. Graham was also invited to tell his own story of recovery and growth through some pretty dark times of depression and anxiety.
With over 100 packages awarded through on air contesting, The Final One Weekend Only Package was auctioned off in support of Inn From the Cold - a local charity that offers shelter, sanctuary and healing to assist homeless children and their families achieve independence. Beckler & Seanna from X Mornings along with the winning bidder Gord Dunville dropped off his $2,000 donation cheque to Inn From the Cold following the weekend events. On November 17, Marc & Millions from X Afternoons took part in the Mayor’s 29th Annual Christmas Food Drive Kick Off Event. Six teams competed in the Sobey’s Food Dash in hopes of winning the coveted Golden Shopping Cart. X92.9’s team was awarded second place! All of the food collected was donated to the Calgary Food Bank.
100.5 CRUZ FM & MIX 103.7 - FORT MCMURRAY, AB
JASMINE ROBINSON
Harvard’s Fort Mac team is finally settling into their brand-new location! It has taken a lot of teamwork to keep the cogs in motion, but nothing we couldn’t overcome. With our new beginning, we look forward to celebrating Mix 103.7’s 10th birthday as today’s best music in Fort McMurray! As of January 15th, Mix 103.7 will launch our gift to the community with a year of Mixperiences, such as concert getaways! To end 2017, the Mix Team had a blast hosting our very 1st Grocery Grab! Teams took part in racing through a grocery store in search of food bank wish list items to be crowned champions. All team items were donated to the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. 100.5 CRUZ FM has teamed up with Canadian Tire & Tim Horton’s in presenting Fresh Brew Your Crew. Every 2 weeks, we head out to local crews to give them a coffee and donut break, play their 3 favourite CRUZ tunes and get to know some members of our hard-working community. Both teams have also just finished the 2-month long string of weekly galas, which has been an exceptional experience, allowing all varieties of staff to engage with a portion of our community we wouldn’t regularly see and showcase the personalities our stations have.

REGINA, SK | TOM STASESON
620 CKRM, MY92.1 and 104.9 the WOLF were proud to once again host the 15th annual Children’s Hospital Radiothon on November 1st and 2nd from Hill Tower II and raised $450,578.00. To date, the Radiothon has raised nearly five million dollars to help build and outfit the new hospital located in Saskatoon, which is slated to open in 2019.
95.7 CRUZ FM & HOT 107 - EDMONTON, AB
LACEY SLATER
With the holiday season around the corner, 95.7 CRUZ FM & HOT 107 helped raise donations and awareness for Edmonton’s Food Bank. Each day from November 20 – 24, Platinum Luxury Limousines brought their largest stretch limo to various locations around Edmonton, where listeners were invited to make a donation of cash or nonperishable food item. For every donation, listeners were given a ballot for the chance to win an amazing arcade game with over 650 games from Big J Arcade. This promotion brought in over 1 tonne of food and $650 in cash at a very critical time for the Edmonton Food Bank. When HOT 107’s Johnny Infamous heard that someone had vandalized a public art piano at the University of Alberta Hospital, he sprung into action. The piano had been in place for 5 years and was a source of comfort for many ill patients. We received many texts from current and previous patients, along with hospital staff, saying that hearing the piano played outside their rooms got them through treatments and illness. Johnny tracked down a listener to donate a piano, movers to help deliver the new piano and even a tuner and set off to replace it! Even Edmonton’s Mayor Don Iveson was proud of the HOT 107 team!

GX94 & FOX FM - YORKTON, SK
QUINN RIOCH
With GX94 Celebrating its 90th Anniversary this year, the station held a contest called GX94’s Cash Capsule: A Contest 90 Years in the Making. We picked one year between 1927 and 2017 (the years GX has been active) to be the year we hide all the money. Listeners had to call in and keep track at home of the years picked. With each incorrect guess, the cash capsule went up $27.00. It was a great way to gain attention and was overall a large success. In the end, our lucky winner with the correct guess of 1968 took home a jackpot of $2,808.00! FOX FM also gave away some money this fall with FOX FM’s Heads or Tails! The first caller chosen would have to correctly guess the gender of the second caller through. If incorrect, the jackpot went up $25.00, and if correct the winner would take home that amount. We had many winners, with the highest jackpot reaching $175.00.
