Cemetery tour brings history to life

I

By Laurel Robertson

f Tombstones Could Talk - a Walking Tour of Fitzhugh Cemetery, brings real historic characters to life at their actual gravesites in Fitzhugh Cemetery. The family-friendly tour on April 11 features a cast of skilled actors portraying late-19th and early-20th century Dripping Springs pioneers telling about their life and times. Professional costumes, antique props and set pieces add authenticity to the performances. Produced and directed by Heritage Circle, an auxillary of the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead, the tour takes place at Fitzhugh Cemetery on Crumley Ranch Road, just north of Dripping Springs. To give the production historical accuracy, Heritage Circle historians Marie Bassett and Janie Botkin researched the lives of local ranchers, farmers, early settlers, Civil War soldiers and others who

made up the backbone of the early Dripping Springs community. Several of the nine historic characters they selected to portray have names preserved in the geography of the area: Crumley, Bonham, Reimer, and Cave. All nine were people who lives affected the social, political and cultural way life in the early Hill Country settlement. Fitzhugh Community began as a stop on the cattle drive trail between Austin and Fredericksburg. Originally called Barton Creek community, it was renamed in 1898 by the postmistress in recognition of nearby Fitzhugh Creek. Most graves in the cemetery date from the early 1900s; some of earlier origin were relocated to Fitzhugh Cemetery from the Spicewood area when Mansfield Dam was constructed in the 1930s. grams Committee chairperson, describes the special appeal of this history re-enactment. “I love any program that brings history to life. Seeing a person in period clothing and hearing stories told in first person really transports me back to that time and place. I’m fascinated to think about how things must have been and how challenging life was and I’m amazed that those who came before us had such courage and hardiness,” says Lisa. “Learning our history from an individual’s viewpoint means so much more to me than reading about a general time or event in a history book.” A “friendship” quilt, created in 1935 by the women of the Fitzhugh Baptist Church and given to their circuit preacher, Reverend Ross, will be on display at the church during the Cemetery Tour. Makers of 22 of the quilt squares will be identified with quilt images marking their gravestones. The church, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year, is located next to the cemetery. Debbie Font will demonstrate a method for improved reading of faded gravemarkers using cornstarch dusting. The new method is less damaging to gravestones than traditional rubbing techniques and is easy on the environment, too, says the Heritage Circle member.

Guided tours last 45 minutes and begin every ten minutes from 1 pm to 3 pm. An introduction to cemetery etiquette is part of the tour and refreshments will be served. Since this is a walking tour on uneven terrain, comfortable shoes are advised, as is an umbrella in case of rain, say Heritage Circle organizers. Tickets are available at the event; ages 15 and under are admitted free. Portions of the proceeds from the educational tour go to help support the Dr. Pound Pioneer Farmstead in Dripping Springs. Past years’ cemetery tours of Wallace Mountain Cemetery, Driftwood Cemetery and Phillips Cemetery helped restore the windmill and outhouse at the Pioneer Farmstead.

FYI • Tombstone Tales, a Walking Tour of Fitzhugh Cemetery will be Saturday, April 11 from 1 pm to 3 pm at Fitzhugh Cemetery on Crumley Ranch Road near Fitzhugh Baptist Church. Merchants Open Late!

First Thursday comes to Dripping starting April 2

D

By Laurel Robertson

owntown Dripping Springs has seen a lot of changes over the past couple of years. Now you can see it as never before - all grown up and open late - with special activities, music, art, food and shopping at the new monthly First Thursday events. Beginning April 2, and continuing on the first Thursday evening of each month from April to December, merchants on Mercer Street, Old Fitzhugh Road and around the central business district will stay open later and offer special attractions and entertainments for the shoppers and spectators that come to town to experience First Thursday. Vendors will set up booths outside downtown businesses to offer unique wares and treats. There will be fun activities, live music, and lots of surprises in store for people as they leisurely stroll the Mercer Street, Old Fitzhugh Road and Hays Street historic districts that will play host to the city-sanctioned special event. Initiated by the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce and downtown merchants, the monthly event will bring people to town to eat in our restaurants, shop in our stores and pump dollars in the Dripping economy, says First Thursday planning committee chair Christine Ann. The monthly event will also help promote and give a boost to other city-sponsored festivities such as Founders Day, DS Rodeo and the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival, she points out. As owner of Goodie Two Shoes in

Dripping Springs and formerly of the SoCo District of Austin, Christine is a veteran of the First Thursday events held in that boutique area of Austin for the past 15 years. “I spent years helping put together a really big event there every month,” she recalls. “This First Thursday will be more in keeping with Dripping Springs’ own character - small town, fun and creative,” she says. Her own boutique on Old Fitzhugh Road will sponsor booths with a Country Living theme. Urban Coops will bring their designer chicken pens, there will be a Corn-in-theHole, Chicken Bingo (with a live hen picking the numbers) and washer pitching pits for fun and games. Other businesses will sponsor activities, vendors and musicians reflecting different themes to fit their individual businesses. Those businesses participating in First Thursday will be marked with distinctive outdoor lighting and fly a flag featuring the First Thursday logo. Sherrie Parks, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, says the First Thursday planning group has worked successfully with city staff to make sure the event is a positive addition to the commmunity. “We want this to work for the city and be good for the merchants and the city altogether,” she says. All vendors must file an application with the City of Dripping Springs and be hosted by a participating business. Decibel levels for music venues will be limited and city council will conduct a monthly review of the event. See FIRST THURSDAY, page 7
