Charming “Nutcracker” ballet close to home

I

By Laurel Robertson

f a favorite part of your holiday season is enjoying the splendor of “The Nutcracker” ballet - but you don’t love fighting traffic, packing into a crowded theater, or paying sky high ticket prices for the pleasure - take heart. On December 21 and 22, Ballet Southwest Academy (BSA) will present their fourth annual production of “The Nutcracker” in the Austin Waldorf School’s Performing Arts Center. Elegant costuming, colorful staging and accomplished dancers will deliver all of the wonder - with none of the hassle. The performance, at just over an hour plus a short intermission, is the perfect length for children of all ages, says owner and director of Ballet Southwest Academy Lisl Vaillant-McDonald. Lisl is very familiar with “The Nutcracker” and a full array of classical bal-

lets. After graduating from the American School of Ballet in New York City, she danced professionally for 25 years as a member of the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle (including their performances of “The Nutcracker”) and as a soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet. She also toured with the National Ballet Company’s production of Phantom of the Opera. When Lisl moved to Austin with her family 12 years ago, she taught dance at Ballet Austin and other schools, but after numerous requests for ballet classes from parents of students at the Waldorf School (where her daughter, Ainsley, is a student), she opened Ballet Southwest Academy in 2009. Classes at BSA focus on traditional ballet instruction, encouraging students to learn the importance of process and quality of work while improving their coSee BALLET SOUTHWEST ACADEMY, page 2

ordination, imagination and strength, she says. Lisl says she loves the control over class size she can maintain with her own academy. Total enrollment is limited to 50 students and class size is capped at twelve; Lisl teaches all but the beginning ballet classes herself. Recently she brought Roxy YoungGreine, a graduate of Ballet Austin and a certified Montessori teacher, on board to teach the youngest dancers, employing an application of the Montessori method. More advanced dancers at SBA benefit from additional once-a-week instruction under Ballet Austin graduate and teacher trainee Lisa Larson, who integrates modern dance technique into her curriculum. Lisl also relishes her ability to sculpt the performance to meet the abilities of the dancers. Case in point: this year’s Nutcracker includes an added variation to the Chinese section of the ballet to showcase the new ability of several of her 11- and 12-year-old dancers to dance “on pointe.” Expanding the availability of ballet training and performing opportunities is a major focus at BSA. Because she would like to see more males involved in ballet, Lisl offers several boys’ and young men’s classes on a scholarship basis. See BALLET SOUTHWEST ACADEMY, page 3

December 2013 BALLET SOUTHWEST ACADEMY, from page 2 Auditions for all Ballet Southwest Academy performances are open to all dancers from the community who would like to expand their performing experiences. BSA stages an annual spring ballet at the Waldorf School Performing Arts Center – which, like its holiday “Nutcracker” counterpart, features a classical ballet that is youth-friendly. Past presentations have included “Peter and the Wolf,” the “Firebird” and the “Ugly Duckling.” Open auditions will begin in the New Year, as will enrollment for Ballet Southwest Academy’s ballet summer camps. hat’s a British girl from London, who spent years working underground in a subway booth, doing living on 14 open acres in the wilds of the Texas Hill Country? Having the time of her life, insists Joan Harrison, owner and resident operator of Driftwood Kennels on Ranch Road 150 southeast of Dripping Springs. “It mine and I love, love, love it!” effuses Joan in her distinctive English accent. Though the city-born and bred Londoner never owned a own dog, she now loves and cares for dozens of canines on a weekly basis at Driftwood Kennels along with several cats and the occasional pig, rabbit, hamster, bird, ferret or iguana. She feeds a flock of feral peacocks that freely wander the grounds, in addition to the ubiquitous squirrels and deer that help entertain the resident boarders.

Joan’s transition from urban European to rural Texan began when she met former Driftwood Kennels owners Bob and Coleen Moreau on a vacation cruise. Joan told the couple about her lifelong dream of running a kennel, and one thing led to another. Before she could say, “Bob’s your uncle,” the 58-year-old was learning the new ropes of Texas country living. “I had to get used to the slower pace of life in the country, Joan says. She also learned quickly about the hazards of Texas weather: extended droughts interrupted by sudden floods and tornadoes. Joan had been here a total of one month when a violent wind burst toppled more than 50 trees on her land. Two weeks later, she and other customers at Wells Fargo Bank were herded into the vault for safety during a tornado See DRIFTWOOD KENNELS, page 5

One thing she’s learned from the dramatic Texas weather is the importance of having the kennel owner live on site. “We are here 24/7, which is important for the pets’ well-being and safety,”Joan stresses. “When we have thunderstorms, we

leave the lights on and turn the TV volume up so they don’t get too scared. The sound of the TV takes the edge off the bangs of the thunder for the scared dogs.” Driftwood Kennels has both outdoor and indoor (climate-controlled) runs for dogs, cats and other pets. Each resident enjoys a courtesy playtime or cuddle time daily. Additional entertainment in the form of a nature walk, ball-playing, yard romp or additional cuddle time is available. Joan also offers a horse-feeding service so owners can leave their horses at home while they travel. A theater in the round pet grooming area in the center of the runs gives everyone a chance to meet their fellow pet vacationers and laugh at the dogs who are getting groomed, reports one customer. Groomer Joyce Hayes takes themed photos of her pet clients for each holiday and displays the humorous photo collections on picture boards around the grooming area for everyone’s entertainment. Driftwood Kennels was voted the “Best Country Holiday for the Pooch” in Austin Chronicle’s Best of Austin poll. FYI • Driftwood Kennels is located at 19101 Farm Market 150 West, between Darden Hills Road and Ranch Road 1826. Hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 6 pm; Saturday from 8:30 am to noon and Sunday from 5 pm to 6 pm for courtesy pickup. LEFT TO RIGHT DSYAF Advisory Board members Traci Henze, Debby Theis, Jennifer Dodson, James Dodson, Hal Meyer, Hill Country Rally for Kids president Cody Reeves and DSYAF Advisory Board member Betty Meyer. DRIPPING SPRINGS H Following August’s record-setting attendance, the Hill Country Rally for Kids has awarded a $20,000 grant to the Dripping Springs Youth Activity Fund (DSYAF). Cody Reeves, president and founder of the Hill Country Rally for Kids, recently presented the DSYAF Board of Directors with a check for the funds “Our Rally is built to support kids. Following an extensive grant application process, our board felt the DSYAF was deserving of money that could help more children in the Dripping Springs community participate in the extracurricular activities that they were passionate about,” said Cody. The Hill Country Rally for Kids, formerly known as the Burke Rally, started in 2006 to benefit the Burke Center, a residential facility that provides care and support of infants, children and adolescents who have been abused and/or neglected. While the Rally remains a supporter of the Burke Center, it has recently expanded to help other local organizations that assist families and children. DSYAF was formed to provide financial assistance to children that reside within the Dripping Springs Independent School District (DSISD) boundaries who would otherwise be unable to participate in extracurricular activities (ex: DSYSA, DSISD Community Education, music lessons, etc.) due to financial constraints. The goal is to help not only low-income families, but also children whose families are temporarily working through situations such as serious illness, job loss, or divorce. DSYAF began granting financial assistance in 2010, and helped 4 children pay their extracurricular registration fees that year. In 2011, 32 children received assistance, followed by 49 children in 2012. So far in 2013, 68 children have benefited from the DSYAF. “Our Board is very grateful to Cody and the Hill Country Rally for Kids. We are very excited about the opportunity this affords our community. With these additional funds, the DSYAF can expand our reach and offer additional programs - helping even more children in Dripping Springs experience the benefits of extracurricular activities,” said Jennifer Dodson, DSYAF Board President.
