Gourmet condiments made close to home

wner Cindy Figer describes New Canaan Farms as a “big small business,” which might sound like a contradiction, but it isn’t.New Canaan Farms is indeed big, and one of Dripping Springs’ claims to fame for several decades now. With an extensive line of products, they’re an international business with customers all around the world; nevertheless, these purveyors of palate-pleasing jams, jellies, sauces and dips remain true to founder Tim Tingle’s small business approach and customer-oriented products. “Tim and his wife lived in Austin and in the late 70’s they made jams and jellies in their kitchen,” Cindy explains, “giving them away as gifts on holidays.” This much-appreciated custom grew into a successful business after compliments
from family and friends motivated the pair to set up a booth at craft fairs, church bazaars and market days in Wimberley. They later purchased their own “promised land” farther west and opened New Canaan Farms, where they set the standard for capturing rural charm and homemade goodness in bottles and jars. When the Figers purchased New Canaan Farms in 1997, Cindy already knew the business inside and out, having worked there for the previous five years as a consultant and accountant. Still, this was a daunting challenge. “We have many talented people making delicious products from scratch,” Cindy says, adding that “using local fresh fruits whenever possible and preparing everything in small batches” are the secret ingredients for the enduring appeal of the See NEW CANAAN, Page 2

NEW CANAAN FARMS, from page 1 River Blackberry Jam and East Texas Blueberry Jam evoke images of hot Texas summers spent lazily floating down a river stream, or picking plump juicy berries – all this happy reverie plus the jams taste great on a biscuit. Culinary tastes, whether ingredients or techniques, are always changing – one year it’s chipotle in everything, another year fire-roasting is all the rage – and New Canaan Farms keeps up with the changes, coming up with something fresh and exciting every year. “Texas Chic” may have peaked a few years ago, but there’s still high demand from the stalwarts at home and across the southwest for jalepenos and barbecue sauces with labels that proudly proclaim allegiance to the Lone Star State. Other customers may gravitate more toward the Twelve Oaks line, introduced in 2005, for the same great gourmet taste with more subtle, less specifically regional labeling. “Right now, because of the growing importance of the wine industry, we look for products that pair well with wine and cheese,” says Cindy. “For example, our Fig and Plum Conserve is especially good served over Brie.” Another big part of their business is private label work, also with the wine industry. “They’ll send the wine and our cooking staff makes
Tasty offerings from New Canaan Farms. Photo courtesy New Canaan Farms. wine jellies or pasta sauces using their wines, and the vineyard then uses their own label.”Cindy adds that New Canaan Farms is has launched a new look for their New Canaan Farms line. Look for sophisticated new labels featuring a white background, black lettering, and a color botanical print of one of the product’s major ingredients – for example, a peach or a sprig of cilantro. FYI • New Canaan Farms is located on US Highway 290, about seven miles west of Dripping Springs. Store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm. July 2013 Parks, open spaces subject of two open town hall meetings
T
he City of Dripping Springs invites citizens living within the City of Dripping Springs, the Dripping Springs Extra Territorial Jurisdiction, or the Dripping Springs Independent School District to participate in a town hall meeting to express their opinions, wants, and needs regarding City owned and managed parks, the future development of open space in Dripping Springs, and recreational programs. Two town hall meetings will be held: the first on Thursday, July 11 at 6:30 pm at City Hall, located at 511 Mercer Street in Dripping Springs; and the second Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30 pm at the Belterra Welcome Center, located at 151 Trinity Hills Drive in Austin. Feedback from the town hall meetings and a survey being conducted will assist the City in preparing the Dripping Springs Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan 2013-2023, which guides the City’s park development for the next 10 years. Preliminary results of the survey open to the public through June 30 will be presented at the town hall meetings. FYI • For more information about the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan, contact City Administrator Michelle Fischer at City Hall at 512-858-4725 or email at mfischer@cityofdrippingsprings.com.

Chock full o’Nuts owner, Stephanie Conner LEFT, and daughter, Summer, who works in the shop. Photo by Laurel Robertson. “My husband wanted me to open a Mr. Gatti’s, but I knew that at the end of the day I’d smell like whatever I sold – and I decided I’d rather smell like coffee than pizza!” says the blonde barista with a smile. Starbucks wasn’t even an option: “I don’t like Starbucks...,” she says flatly. In addition to serving coffee, espresso, hot teas and all manner of hot and frozen coffee drinks, Chock full o’Nuts Cafe offers muffins (baked there), smoothies, breakfast tacos and breakfast sandwiches. They also mix up infused Red Bull drinks – like a blended coffee drink, but built with Red Bull energy drinks as a caffeine base, says Stephanie. The cafe
also sells Chock full o’Nuts regular and espresso-roasted coffee by the pound. With three school-age daughters, Stephanie knew she could count on a steady corps of employees. Her 15-yearold daughter, Summer, is working shifts at the family shop during this summer’s school break. Younger sisters will be taking their turns in future years. The Chock full o’Nuts kiosk can be found just inside the pharmacy entrance at HEB. Hours are Monday through Friday from 6 am to 6 pm; Saturday from 7 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 7 am to 5 pm.
