Not-to-be missed music at November 10 event
Y
By Melissa Maxwell Ball
ou’re in for a truly terrific afternoon (and evening) of live Texas music and fun for the entire family at the Katherine Anne Porter School Music Fest fundraiser November 10 at Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center Come, check out the brand new Event Center and take this opportunity to hear the legendary Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock (with son, Rory) of Flatlanders fame as they start the day off right, taking the stage at 4 pm. Jimmie and Butch have been playing together on and off since 1976 and the chance to hear this remarkable duo is not-to-be-missed. Katherine Anne Porter School’s band takes the stage at 5 pm. Anything but typical, the ensemble features students Julia Newhouse, Rory Hancock, Blaze Scheibmeir, Alex Moerbe, Dub Albrecht and Miguel Santos, managed by teacher Jennie
Labuhn, who also contributes vocals. At 6 pm, father and son Kevin and Dustin Welch perform, bringing a true family tradition to the stage. Kevin is a respected singer-songwriter (the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Moe Bandy, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and Don Williams have used his material) and his multi-instrumentalist and songwriter son, Dustin, a stunning young talent in his own right. But wait, stick around for the remarkable young singer-songwriter Sahara Smith—aka Girl Pilot—performing at 7 pm. The Los Angeles Times writes of her, “Texas singer-songwriter Sahara Smith creates Cinemascope-like wide-screen portraits of romantic passion, loneliness and unrequited love...” Come hear her for yourself. Eliza Gilkyson closes out the evening, taking the stage at 8 pm. Eliza is a politiSee KAPS MUSIC FEST, Page 2

All proceeds from the Music Fest go to Katherine Anne Porter School (KAPS) — a unique, free, public charter high school founded in 1998, located in Wimberley. “Katherine Anne Porter School exists to provide a quality choice in the high school educational offerings for students specifically in Hays, Blanco, Comal, and surrounding counties,” explains superintendent Jordan Elliott-Pierce. “In addition to providing a stellar educational curriculum from highly qualified teachers, we attract students who flourish in a colorful environment focused on self expression and nurturing individual interests. One of the many draws of the school is class size, as our average class size rests at 10 students. We believe that all students have the potential to be world changers, and it is our job as educators to unleash and assist students in realizing and reaching this potential.” See MUSIC FEST, Page 3

The Katherine Anne Porter School Music Fest fundraiser—formerly known as “Java Jive”— is in it’s 14th year. This year’s earnings will go toward the construction of new classrooms at Katherine Anne Porter School. “Certainly one of the primary challenges faced by all charter schools is the lack of funding for facilities, in regards to both renovations of existing space and for expansion,” explains Jordan. While other public ISDs receive funds from local tax revenue and state facilities allotments, charter schools are denied these funds and left to fend for themselves when it comes to securing and upgrading real estate. 100 percent of the money raised through our annual Music Fest will fund classroom additions and safety renovations at KAPS.” FYI • Katherine Anne Porter School Music Fest and Fundraiser is Sunday, November 10, from 3:30 pm to 9 pm at the Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center at 1042 DS Ranch Road in Dripping Springs. Tickets are $25 general admission and $15 for students (kids 12 and under get in free). KAPS Music Fest Fundraiser is sponsored by Whole Foods Market. Have an item or service you’d like to donate to the Silent Auction? Katherine Anne Porter School is a 501c3 organization and all donations are tax deductible. Donations accepted through November 5. Allison LeBlanc, the cookie fairy G By Laurel Robertson
etting the flu last January was about the best thing that ever happened to Allison LeBlanc. During the ten days they were sick and housebound, she and her son went on a cookie-making binge that began with a batch of disappointing sugar cookies and ended up launching her new business—The Cookie Fairy. The mother of two had just left a fulltime job in a dental office and was brainstorming a new career that would allow more time for home and family. With a BA in business administration, should she go to real estate school? How about graphic design or photography to satisfy her creative knack? She was still turning over these ideas the day that first batch of “horrible” sugar cookies compelled her perfectionist tendencies to dive into cookbooks and online resources to learn how to bake the perfect batch of cookies. Her son Brady happily filled the role of taste tester. A few weeks—and hundreds of cookies—later, Allison served cookies she was finally pleased with at her daughter’s birthday party. A friend in the restaurant business tasted them and remarked, “You might have something here...” and promptly ordered two dozen cookies. Within 24 hours, Allison had received several more or-
ders from birthday party parents. The Cookie Fairy grew wings. These days, Allison owns over 275 cookie cutters, has invested in a Kopy Cake machine that projects decorating images onto cookies, and regularly fills the long counters in her kitchen with the multiple cookie orders she receives from word-of-mouth and Facebook promotion. Consistency, she maintains, is the key to good cookie decorating. And good flavor, chimes in her husband Shane, makes them the best cookies around. ‘”They’re not just pretty’ is the number one feedback we get,” he says. “I knew they were a good thing when I had people coming back two or three times, Allison warrants with a smile. Typically she sells her Cookie Fairy productions as A Story in a Box collection, containing a group of distinctively shaped and decorated cookies that portray the different aspects of the person’s life. Each collection is unique to the individual and custom-selected for them by the wit and skill of the Cookie Fairy. Beyond children’s birthday parties and holiday celebrations, Allison makes cookies for weddings and baby showers, for bachelorette and Bunko parties, for family reunions and girls’ weekend get-aways. Businesses give them to clients and students give them to their teachers. (Walnut Springs Elementary School has a standing cookie order for every teacher’s birthday!) See COOKIE FAIRY, Page 5

A plate of delicious holiday cheer. Photo courtesy The Cookie Fairy. The Cookie Fairy bakes cookies in two flavors: sugar and rolled chocolate chip. For the upcoming holiday season, Allison is planning to debut new gingerbread, pumpkin spice and mocha flavored cookies. She’ll also have her Cookie Fairy booth at the Dripping Springs Women’s Club’s Holiday Marketplace at the Terrace Club on November 13, where she’ll display new Christmas Cookie Collections, along with her regular whimsical, traditional and collegiate sports collections. In the New Year, Allison plans on offering cookie decorating classes to the public. This coming March, she’ll attend her first Cookie Convention in Salt Lake City, where she plans to compete in a cookie decorating contest along with the top cookie decorators in the country. The wheels are already turning in the creative mind of the Cookie Fairy to come up with a winning design.
