Grace and Pax House a work of love, devotion, service

A

By Laurel Robertson

fter a lifetime designing tropical resorts and boutique hotels, architect Reuben Contreras knows a thing or two about making people feel comfortable and cared for. During the past two years, Reuben and wife Susi Campuzno, an interior designer and landscape artist, have concentrated the knowledge and skills they’ve learned over their lifetimes on a small “boutique senior care home” in Dripping Springs. Grace and Pax House is their work of love, devotion and service, say Reuben and Susi. They feel older people are “pure gold” for families and communities and still have a lot to give. “They want to be able to relax, but to keep doing and contributing,” says Reuben. He designed Grace and Pax House to help make that possible.

“We wanted to create a ‘home with assistance’ for seniors, rehab patients, or anyone who needs help with daily living, that provides lodging, meals and hands-on assistance,” says Reuben. “Our aim is to preserve the dignity of the individual and minimize feelings of isolation and loneliness. We try to keep loved ones as independent as possible, while giving them the comfort and warmth of the home environment.” Hidden away on four secluded acres off Highway 290 just west of town, the assisted living facility offers a totally renovated and expanded 1968 ranch home (with handicap accessible doorways, bathrooms and showers) looking out over colorful landscaping, a small lakefront, gardens, fountains, a gazebo, Susi’s art studio, and resident See GRACE AND PAX HOUSE, page 2

GRACE AND PAX HOUSE, from page 1 donkeys, Cinderella and Snow White. “Visiting the donkeys is a good motivation for short outings for our residents,” Reuben explains, “plus I just like the sound they make!” Susi’s green thumb is evident in the burgeoning plantings around the acreage. Bird feeders hang among colorful flowers near a koi pond with a fountain. A serene gazebo rests just off a main pathway, underneath the reaching branches of a large live oak tree. The land steps down to a small creek, which flows into a large pond, visible through the trees. A new garden will soon contribute its produce to the home-cooked meals from the house kitchen. Round-the-clock care at Grace and Pax is led by full-time director Sean Reed and Renee Loupe, RN. Both have years of experience in senior care and have been invaluable in helping structure a safe, secure, yet friendly environment for the resident guests, says Reuben. Chef Kelly Scroggins gets rave reviews for her three home-cooked meals each day. The home’s interior is light and bright, thanks to oversized windows and Susi’s sense of color and space. Pieces of her original artwork decorate the walls. An entry living area leads to an open dining room and kitchen, flanked by an east wing with four resident bedrooms. Down the west wing is a family room holding a spacious and comfortable white leather sectional, across from an efficient and organized nursing station. Two large bedroom suites at the end of the hall can house full-time residents or weekend guests, whose families may be travelling.

Though they don’t talk much about religion, Reuben and Susi’s Christian faith and a “desire to serve with humility” was central to their motivation to create Grace and Pax House. “We believe that serving others is the best way for us to live lives of holiness everyday,” says Susi. “For us, the Grace and Pax House allows us to really bring love into this world.” FYI • Grace and Pax House is located at 1459 Highway 290 West, across from the Dripping Springs Post Office. s in years past, Pouring Over Books, an annual fundraiser for the Friends of the Dripping Springs Community Library, will offer an entertaining opportunity to enjoy fine wine in a beautiful Dripping Springs home and meet an interesting author. October 19, Meg Gardiner, an Austin-based, award-winning author of crime novels, will be the featured guest at the event, hosted this year at the ranch home of Fritz Holt, owner of the original Triple Creek Ranch. Meg’s best-selling thrillers have been translated into 20 languages and won multiple awards, including Amazon’s Top Ten Thrillers of 2008 and chosen this past summer as one of O (Oprah) Magazine’s “Best Books of the Summer.” Meg holds a law degree from Stanford University and taught writing at the University of California Santa Barbara. Event chair John Hoag says the Friends are “honored and thrilled to have Meg head up this event. Sponsorship has been gratifying and we are geared up for lively ticket sales.”

Feel happier and more comfortable in your body … Feel good about yourself … more confident... more fluid as you move through your daily life! Feel terrific after stretching, strengthening your core and using calming, healing breath work. I love helping people get healthier — yoga can do the trick. PLUS you’ll learn how to take better care of yourself off the mat!

The event will feature two flights of wine from around the world and live music from the Hill Country Ramblers, whose upbeat tunes entertain many regional venues and events. Proceeds from the fundraiser will further the Friends’ mission of “ensuring that the Library can offer all the library programs and services our growing community expects and needs.” The Dripping Springs Community Library’s only community funding source is a small percentage of sales tax generated by businesses in the district. ake in a flood of information about using the sky for your water supply at the fifth annual Rainwater Revival on October 25 at Dripping Springs Ranch Park. The free and fun edu-fest will have speakers, demonstrations and exhibitors sharing the latest information about capturing and using rainwater to help meet Central Texas’ growing water needs. A tour of home rainwater catchment systems will follow the next day. Presented by the Hill Country Alliance, the Rainwater Revival began in Dripping Springs in 2010 and has spent the past three years travelling to other parts of the Hill Country. “We’re happy to be coming ‘home’ to Dripping Springs to share the latest information about rainwater conservation and harvesting,” says Revival Chair Karen Ford. Under the Ranch Park’s new 177,000 square-foot Event Center roof, the Rainwater Revival can now be entirely protected from rainy fall weather, she points out with appropriate irony. Speakers on two separate stages will offer expertise on subjects ranging from do-it-yourself rain barrel construction to new national design standards for rainwater catchment and municipal incentives for rainwater harvesting. Besides rooftop catchment methods, designs and techniques of sculpting land for rainwater retention will be discussed - including rain gardens and droughtresilient landscapes. A panel of rain system homeowners will give practical advice on living with rainwater catchment and a Net Zero Model for meeting a home’s total water needs from rainfall will be presented. Family-friendly activities include the Raindrop Stop for kids, with educational and fun activities relating to rainwater. Environmental educators will help youngsters create their own “Aquifer in a Cup” and explain the effects of ground cover on water runoff with the Rainwater Runoff Simulator. Food trailers will offer lunch, with musical entertainment provided by Hot Texas Swing Band. KDRP 103.1 and its affiliates will broadcast live from the event all day. More than 30 exhibitor booths will showcase services and products relating to rainwater and water conservation. As in previous years, rain barrels turned into functional works of art by Hill Country artists are being auctioned off to provide grants to Hill Country schools for conservation activities. Funds from last year’s auction enabled the Hill Country Alliance to fund three (instead of the usual two) $1000 Rainwater Revival grants to three Hill Country schools to helps teachers and students design and implement water-

Tickets for the Homes Tour on Sunday are available online, or at the Revival. Tour participants can travel to the sites at their own pace; homeowners/rain system installers will be on hand to talk about the systems. See RAINWATER REVIVAL, page 5

Since the first Rainwater Revival in 2010, thousands of people - both novices and experienced rainwater harvesters - have learned the latest in rainwater catchment techniques for both indoor and outdoor use from an array of experts, speakers and exhibitors, reports Karen. “With increasing population growth and development, we know there continues to be a huge interest in rainwater harvesting to take some pressure off local aquifers and dwindling surface water supplies,” she says. “While the drought is still seriously affecting our public water supplies, we

know the Hill Country receives enough rain events to fill tanks and provide an ongoing water supply to savvy rainwater harvesters,” asserts Hill Country Alliance’s Christy Muse. “Once someone sees how simple it is to collect and use rainwater captured on their own property, they’re hooked.” FYI • The Hill Country Alliance’s 2014 Rainwater Revival is October 25, from 10 am to 4 pm at Dripping Springs Ranch Park. A tour of home rainwater systems is scheduled Sunday, October 26. For a schedule of events, list of sponsors, tickets for the Home Tour and to bid on rain barrel art, visit their website: rainwaterrevival.com. The Hill Country Alliance is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to raise public awareness and build community support around the need to preserve the natural resources and heritage of the Central Texas Hill Country.
