VINTAGE SOUL, from page 1 With her husband and four sons, Julie is outnumbered by the men five to one at home, and from that perspective, she says, “This shop is my girl. This is the where I get to fluff up and play. I love decorating and redecorating the shop.” Julie describes her shop as “a vintage-inspired boutique” – even though all of the items are not by definition vintage according to their age, they look and feel true to that earlier time period. And because Julie is “always looking for the story,” seeking out anything from bangles to bunting and burlap that hearkens back to an earlier era, she chooses pieces that are very much at home with the actual antiques. Antique jars and new wooden cheese boards. Modern jewelry mixing it up with old photographs and a ledger listing purchases from a century ago. “Blending the old and new is what I most appreciate,” Julie says. Vintage Soul is ideally situated in a vine-covered historic building that is more than 100 years old and was once a pharmacy on Mercer Street before it was moved to this location in the 1950s. “I could not have asked for a better building,” Julie says, “There’s no running water, no bathroom, and no storage, but it’s perfect.” What the location lacks in modern amenities, it more than makes up for with historical authenticity and ambience. Vintage Soul is floor to ceiling chockfull of treasures large and small, yet surprisingly easy to navigate and not at all cluttered. One promenade around the aisles isn’t enough – you’ll want to go round and round again because there will undoubtedly be some little treasure you didn’t see or a charming design vignette you’ll want to examine more closely. Check out the old birdbath by the entrance door planted with an assortment of succulents. And don’t miss the cotton boll wreath hanging high on the wall or the funky old framed picture of George Washington, unsmiling as always, but quite comfortable there on the shelf with 21st century eyeglass

Lori McKenna will headline Songwriter’s Fest in October
DRIPPING SPRINGS H Organizers of the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival are proud to announce Lori McKenna —two-time Grammy-winner and ACM’s 2017 Songwriter of the Year — will headline the festival October 20-22. Featuring an incredible roster of local, national and international songwriting talent, guests to the fest can choose from 30-plus song-packed shows a day. More than 35 talented songwriters from as far away as Australia and Ireland will play “in-theround” Nashville-style, on six intimate stages located at The Barber Shop, Mercer Street Dance Hall, Acopon Brewing, Mazama Coffee Company, The Sidecar Tasting Room and Hudson’s on Mercer — all within safe, easy walking distance of each other in the quaint Historic DisLori McKenna. Performances run continuously on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday the festivities include a spirited Gospel Showcase at Hudson’s on Mercer followed by the ever-popular Festival Wrap-Party at the Barber Shop. Admission to all regular daytime showcases are free to the public. Lori McKenna and Angaleena Presleys’ intimate solo performances at Mercer Street Dance Hall at this year’s Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival should not be missed. Tickets for this much-anticipated headline showcase are available now, and are priced at $40 for Reserved Seating and $25 for General Admission. In 2016, Lori was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and won Best Country Song for co-writing the hit, “Girl Crush,” which was performed and made famous by Little Big Town. She won Best Country Song again in 2017 at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards with her tune, “Humble and Kind,” which was beautifully covered by Tim McGraw. She is one of only five solo women to win the CMA award for Song of the Year, and the first female songwriter to win two years in a row. Music history was made in 2017 when Lori McKenna became the first woman in the 52-year history of the ACM Awards to win Songwriter of the Year. She penned the 2x Platinum Billboard No. 1 hit “I Want Crazy” by Hunter Hayes and other radio favorites such as Little Big Town’s “Your Side of the Bed” and “Sober,” while Reba McEntire, Alison Krauss, David Nail, Keith Urban and others have also recorded her songs. Three-time CMT Award nominee and member of the Pistol Annies, Angaleena Presley, will open the show for Lori. Angaleena is touring to support her new album, “Wrangled,” which debuted at No. 15 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart. She painted the earlier signs on reclaimed pallets, but now more often uses old barn wood, ceiling tins, and even door panels. any surveys and studies about what humans fear the most claim that standing in front of a group and talking is at the top of the list, surpassing snakes, heights, needles, zombies, ghosts, even death itself. While dying is one sure way to escape having to give the dreaded office presentation or obligatory maid of honor wedding toast, a far better alternative is to become a more confident and effective public speaker. The Dripping Springs Toastmasters help individuals achieve that goal, and their weekly meetings are also a lot of fun. Toastmasters here and around the world offer two tracks, one for those interested in building their public speaking and communication skills, and another for developing good leadership skills. Anne Child, Secretary and Immediate Past President for Dripping Springs Toastmasters, says the idea is “to learn by doing” surrounded by a friendly group of peers who offer support and immediate

Anne’s association with Toastmasters started about 12 years ago in Austin when she was working there as a computer programmer. “It was after I began volunteering with a lobbying organization,” she recalls, “that I became aware during leadership training that I wasn’t communicating very well.” Toastmasters seemed like a good way to get guidance and an opportunity to practice speaking. The first speech each new member gives to the group is an “icebreaker” and the object is simply to introduce and tell about yourself in a way that engages the listeners and reveals those qualities that make you who you are. What motivates you? What are your interests and concerns? “I was very nervous,” Anne says, “but that meant I really practiced.” Anne says the evaluations from the group are always

encouraging, honest and constructive. “It is wonderful to see the successes, to watch an individual blossom and steadily get so much better at speaking,” she says. The weekly meeting agenda generally includes three prepared speeches followed by a “Table Topics” question and answer session, with a designated table topics master who asks several people questions, providing opportunities for impromptu speaking practice. Speeches may be serious or lighthearted, and often relate to a specific theme that may be inspired by a holiday, the end of the school year, summer vacation or some other event. A recent speech with a Memorial Day theme described the proper way to fold an American flag and the meaning of each fold. The table topic for that meeting included questions about both real life and super heroes. Anne says that the Dripping Springs Toastmasters, unlike some other clubs, “do not shy away from controversial topics,” including the dreaded not-in-polite-company topics of sex, religion, and politics. As long as the speeches aren’t offensive or just a rant, but are insightful and thought provoking, no subject is off the table. “One meeting we were especially proud of was called Empathy Matters,” she says. “Four speakers gave very thoughtful speeches on their own takes of Black Lives Matter, compassion, empathy and what it will take to make our society whole.” It is noteworthy that the Dripping Springs Toastmasters received the Presidents Distinguished Club rating (the highest rating) every year since the club was founded in 2008. Anne says, “This award means that our members are achieving their speaking and leadership goals,
bringing in new members, and properly conducting club business.” Anne recalls one speaker who juggled throughout his entire speech and another man who played guitar during part of his speech. Most members tend to gravitate toward topics that are not related to their professions, although there are exceptions. Anne says, “At the Austin Toastmasters club, there was a man whose speeches were almost always about some aspect of his career in real estate.” His persuasive skills must have been impressive because when Anne decided to move to Dripping Springs, she asked him to be her realtor. “He did an excellent job,” she says. 5th Annual Fair and Rodeo rides into town July 21-23 DRIPPING SPRINGS H The 5th Annual Dripping Springs Fair and Rodeo returns to Dripping Springs Ranch Park and Event Center July 21-23 with thrilling rodeo action, live entertainment, a steer show, a Mutton Bustin’ Shootout, good food and drinks, kids’ activities and family fun. Hosted by Dripping Springs Ag Boosters Association and the City of Dripping Springs, the annual community tradition has transformed into a top notch Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association Rodeo and fundraiser to support area 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America youth involved in agricultural projects and programs. The rodeo starts at 8 pm Friday. Saturday events kick off with a complimentary Cowboy Breakfast at 8 am (open to the public), followed by a free Ranch Rodeo at 11 am, featuring cowboys and cowgirls representing some of the region’s historic ranches in events including Trailer Loading, Branding, Yoking and Steer Tying. From 4 pm to 5 pm, kids can sign up ($20 each) to compete in the Mutton Bustin’ Shootout.
