W
By Laurel Robertson
hether you’re a tomato-growing virtuoso who’s able to nurture the brightest cherries and richest heirlooms to ripe perfection, or merely a tomato-loving tenderfoot who wants to taste-test dozens of varieties to find your favorite, Tomato Round-Up on June 24 is what you’ve been waiting for. Now in its sixth year, the annual tomato contest and celebration in Dripping Springs has become the biggest tomato festival in Central Texas – maybe in all of the state, ventures John Dromgoole, legendary gardening expert, owner of The Natural Gardener and founder of the Tomato Round-Up. The City of Dripping Springs’ Farmers Market adopted the festival four years ago to promote everything associated with the venerated vegetable (or is

Chamber, Visitors Bureau are now separate entities
DRIPPING SPRINGS H The Dripping Springs Visitors Bureau, established in 1984 and supported by the Chamber of Commerce will now become a separate and independent non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Pam Owens, who has been director since 2012, and will be named as President, CEO, of the Visitors Bureau, which will be restructured to enable to focus on the travel and tourism market. “We are extremely grateful to the Chamber who has always supported the Visitors Bureau even in its infancy, but the reality is the tourism business and the work of the Bureau has expanded beyond Dripping Springs,” says Pam. “Now the Bureau will be in a position to provide a broader range of services and added support to more area businesses associated with the tourism industry.” The new Visitors Bureau will remain in its current location, next door to Dripping Springs City Hall on Mercer Street, just off Highway 290. “Our role is to make Dripping Springs a major tourist destination. Our task is to provide those who travel through Dripping Springs a reason to stop, shop, and stay in our city,” says Pam. “We want Dripping Springs to be known more than the ‘Gateway to the Hill Country’ – it is a destination.” A new web site, DestinationDrippingSprings.com, focuses on tourism and offers an event calendar, photos and descriptions, an interactive map and trip-planning tools. Under the direction of the Chamber, the Visitors Bureau has become a major marketing force in increasing the number of visitors and vacationers who travel to Dripping Springs each year. The Chamber of Commerce led the effort to make Dripping Springs the Wedding Capital of Texas® and helps to support wineries, breweries and distilleries through referrals as well as through the annual, highly anticipated Dripping with Taste Wine & Food Festival. The decision to make the Visitors Bureau a separate organization was based on an increasing number of tourism related businesses. According to Pam, “The Chamber will continue to be part of a joint effort to make Dripping Springs a point of interest for visitors. The fact is, visitors and vacationers create buyers for local merchants and that is beneficial for our local economy.”
popsicles and jellies. Tea, lemonade and locally bottled rainwater will be available to drink. Picnic tables beneath tall shade trees will lend cool comfort to the summer morning’s proceedings. Local musician, Jerry Rivers, will entertain the crowd with familiar and well-loved songs — including that Tomato Round-Up favorite, “Homegrown Tomatoes.” (Guy Clark fans will be heartened to know that at this festival at least, money can buy homegrown tomatoes. But you’re still on your own with true love....) The Tomato Round-Up is made possible each year by local businesses and individuals who contribute sponsorships for the event. Those will be available through the first week of June, says Farmers Market vice-chair and Tomato Round-Up planner Marianne Simmons, who has spear-headed the event for the past several years. Donation of items for the Silent Auction are also welcomed. Vendors with tomato-inspired foods and goods to sell are invited to submit applications to the Tomato Round-Up Planning Committee. FYI • The sixth annual Tomato Round-Up will be June 24 from 9 am to 1 pm at Veterans Memorial Park (The Triangle) in Dripping Springs. Tomato contest registration runs from 8 am to 9 am; winners will be announced at noon. For more information, visit the web site at www. cityofdrippingsprings.com (click on the “events” tab), visit the Tomato Round-Up page on Facebook or call 512-8584725.

hough it might seem the two sideby-side businesses have nothing in common, the bike shop and the children’s/moms’ boutique actually share quite a bit in common – their DNA, for one thing. JAM Mom•Baby•Kids owner, Linda McAnally Weichert, and Canyon Cycles owner, Shane McAnally, are mother and son, happily running their separate businesses within feet of each other’s front doors on Old Fitzhugh Road in Dripping Springs. The stores share a recently remodeled structure in the city’s boho shopping district, along with some unexpected and surprising similarities. While their atmosphere and décor are starkly different (plenty of pastels with ruffles and whimsy at JAM; neon green and black with lots of metal in Canyon Cycles) –both businesses put an emphasis on customer service and FUN for their clientele. Linda stocks JAM with mostly USAmade goods that are distinctive and wellmade. “I try to find organic or sustainably made goods that aren’t mass-produced in sweatshops,” she says, “and it’s hard work!” JAM carries mothers’ and children’s clothing, toys, costumes, school backpacks, rain gear, jewelry and diaper bags. “Some are expensive, most are not – but they all come with great customer service,” she emphasizes. Shane moved his existing Canyon Cycles business 200 feet, from its previous location on Ranch Road 12, to its new home on Old Fitzhugh Road. The new space offers almost twice the square footage of his previous location. Canyon Cycles tends to draw in people from all walks of life, Shane says. “So many interesting people come through – even non-bikers like to hang out here.” Canyon Cycles carries all levels of street and mountain bikes, from kids’ bikes to high-end bicycles, though repair and service remain the mainstay of Shane’s business. “It’s a down-to-earth bike shop, with reasonable
prices. We fix a lot of flats,” he says with a smile. The mother/son pair stay busy with their respective businesses and don’t see a lot of each other during business hours, they say – except when Shane’s three-yearold daughter (Linda’s granddaughter) See JAM/CANYON CYCLES, page 5

JAM Mom•Baby•Kids owner, Linda McAnally Weichert, and Canyon Cycles owner, Shane McAnally, are mother and son, happily running their separate businesses within feet of each other’s front doors on Old Fitzhugh Road. Photo by Laurel Robertson. June Anne McAnally comes to visit with her mom (and Shane’s wife) Becky. “That’s one of the greatest perks of having Shane’s business next door,” beams Linda.
One of June Anne’s artworks was the inspiration behind the name and concept for JAM. For Christmas last year, Becky stenciled her daughter’s initials onto one
of her paintings and framed it as a gift for Linda. The initials (JAM) looked so perfect on the purple background that Linda, an interior designer by training and trade,
saw in it a logo for a new business. The spare space next to Canyon Cycles in the old house Linda and husband Glenn were remodeling to rent out suddenly had its new tenant! Linda and Shane were both hands-on in remodeling their new spaces. Shane did much of the work, sourcing wall coverings from scrap metal he found in the backyard and welding his own bike stands. Linda, who says she “loves construction,” laid flooring, painted trim – even taped and floated walls to get the building ready. Both mother and son hold great hopes for the future of the Old Fitzhugh Road Historic District as a shopping and retail area. Shane is particularly looking forward to the planned hike and bike trails that are part of the City’s Transportation Plan. One major trail system will go through the Heritage Subdivision, to be built just west of Old Fitzhugh Road and Canyon Cycles. Shane hopes that trail will be accessible by bicycle from his shop. FYI • JAM Mom • Baby • Kids and Canyon Cycles share a location at 750 Old Fitzhugh Road in Dripping Springs. Both businesses are open 10 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday and 10 am to 2 pm Saturday. For more information about JAM , call 512-8942198, email jammombabykids@gmail.com or find them on Facebook. For more information about Canyon Cycles, call 512829-4634, find them on Facebook or visit the web site at canyon-cycles.com.
