Master Gardener training comes to Dripping
T
By Laurel Robertson
he Hays County Master Gardener program has been working to transform greenhorns into green thumbs for the past 21 years. This fall, for the first time in all those years, their Master Gardener’s annual training program will take place in Dripping Springs instead of San Marcos. There’s never been a better time for Dripping Springs residents to join up and learn to “grow green.” Also new this year, the training, which leads to certification as a Texas Master Gardener, has been condensed from sixteen weeks down to eleven - on Tuesday mornings beginning in September and finishing before Thanksgiving. The new schedule covers the same 50 hours of instruction as before, but will be presented in fewer weeks with slightly longer classes, explains HCMG President,
Marilyn Love. “We’re holding the majority of this year’s training classes in Dripping Springs, so people from northern Hays County don’t have to do all the travelling,” she says. Five of the 11 classes will be held at the new Dripping Springs Presbyterian Church on Ranch Road 12 and three will be at the Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center. Two classes will be held at the Hays County Extension offices in San Marcos and one at the Freeman Ranch between Wimberley and San Marcos. In a win-win-win deal, in exchange for their use of the Dripping Springs Presbyterian’s meeting space, the training class will donate 150 volunteer hours to the church’s Giving Garden, which donates all its homegrown produce to Dripping Springs’ Helping Hands Food Pantry. Class participants will receive an inSee MASTER GARDENERS, page 2

hen the Big Box Boys came to town, Dripping Springs Pharmacy didn’t “go big or go home.” Instead, owners Dorinda and Jim Martin focused on staying personal and staying hometown. “You’ve gotta be doing a lot right to stay in business when you’re competing with Walgreen’s and CVS,” says Dorinda.“We try to treat customers like they’re our grandmother or sister,” she says. “We know that many of the people coming in here don’t feel good — so patience is the key.” Between the two of them, Jim and Dorinda have owned more than 10 pharmacies during the past 35 years. Everything they’ve learned through that experience is showcased in the custom service they offer at Martin’s Compounding and Wellness Pharmacy at Dripping Springs, in the Commons Shopping Center. The couple, who married in 2002, bought the existing Dripping Springs Pharmacy when they moved to the area in 2005. Changes began quickly. One of the first was relocating the business to larger quarters around the corner and adding a compounding lab, which allows them to custom-mix medicines for the individual patient. “We can mix a medicine to fit a patient’s particular needs — whether that’s a different dose size, method of adminstering, or unique compound,” Dorinda says. She recalls one case of a four-year-old boy with Muscular Dystrophy, which caused him to drool copiously — to the point of soaking several shirts a day. “His mother came to me desperate for a solution to his drooling problem before he started school in the fall. I compounded an antihistamine/anticholinergic gel to use in his mouth. First I flavored it with cinnamon - but that felt too hot on his tongue. Next I tried a vanilla cupcake flavor - which he loved!” she says. “On his first day of school, he came home with a dry t-shirt and his mother was so happy she almost cried.” Dorinda and staff work with patients’ physicians to determine appropriate medicines for each person. Because they know their patients individually, she and her staff can keep track of all the medicines they regularly take and watch for potential negative reactions among any of the drugs. Dripping Springs Pharmacy has developed a free RX Sync program, designed to help patients who take a number of prescriptions. “We figure out what pills you’ll need for the whole month and make sure you get them all in one trip. We even offer free delivery within a five-mile radius,” Dorinda says. The favorite assistant at Dripping

Springs Pharmacy has to be their robot pill counter, Phillip, says Dorinda. “We call him Phillip, ‘cause we’re always having to ‘fill him up’ with medicines to dispense into the bottles.” Though Phillip is extremely reliable, a human pharmacist completes the job by putting a cap on the mechanically filled bottles. In 2007, Dorinda returned to school to earn a doctorate in Women’s Health, with a specific interest in natural hormone replacement. She now offers individualized hormone replacement counseling at Dripping Springs Pharmacy for both men and women. After evaluating the patient using a saliva test and a one-hour consultation, she draws up recommendations that she shares with their physician. Many doctors are now sending their patients to her for evaluations. Dorinda’s newest venture is compounding her own line of cosmeceutical skin care products. Most, she explains, contain over-the-counter amounts of pharmaceutical-grade skin care ingrediSee MARTIN’S COMPOUNDING, page 6
