Get those babies out in nature with Hike It Baby
O
By Laurel Robertson
utdoor activity can work wonders to dispel postpartum depression and the “baby blues” — but just getting out of the house with a young child in tow can be an exercise in itself! After packing up the baby, a diaper bag, stroller, snacks and planning a schedule that includes breaks for feeding time and naps, many new parents feel alone and ill-equipped to stride off into the woods with a newborn. As the mother of a new baby, Sarah Maxwell understood that hesitation all too well. When the Dripping Springs mom discovered Hike it Baby, a new national organization dedicated to getting babies and their families out into nature, it was a “game changer” for her as a stayat-home mom, she says. Sarah quickly became one of three leaders for the Austin branch of Hike it
Baby and now coordinates several family hikes a month in southwest Austin and the Dripping Springs area. At 18 months, her son Theo is a veteran of weekly hikes at Charro Ranch Park, hike and plays at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, “urban strolls” at the Dripping Springs Farmers Market and any number of specially organized hikes at festivals and inviting locations all around the area. In any given month, the Central Texas branch of Hike it Baby sponsors dozens of free hikes for families, ranging from easy strolls through urban gathering areas to offroad hikes along greenbelts and through rural parks. New moms, just getting back into shape, will feel encouraged by the group cameraderie and not too challenged by the pace, promises Sarah. The hikes are See HIKE IT BABY, page 2

HIKE IT BABY, from page 1 geared for children, who sometimes find flowers and insects along the trail as interesting as the hike itself. One of the guidelines the group lives by, she says, is “we leave no family behind!” “Some of the hikes are led by twoand -three -year-olds,” Sarah points out. “You might not get your heart rate up (although carrying a ten-to-thirty pound child in a backpack can help with that!) - but the kids get out and experience nature.” Hikes are rated by difficulty level - green for easy, stroller-friendly conditions; blue for three-to-seven mile hikes that usually require a baby carrier; black for longer and more serious hiking conditions - though still easy enough for young ones or elderly family members to join in. One of Sarah’s main motivations in volunteering with Hike it Baby is that, as a former teacher, she knows how important nature literacy is to the well-being of children and the world. “Kids need real life experiences outside. I want them to know that nature isn’t some place you visit - it’s us!” she says with conviction. The whole family - from moms and dads, sisters and brothers, to aunts and uncles, nannies and grannies, are welcome on Hike it Baby hikes. The Austin group has added family camping trips to their list of activities. Their recent camping trip to Colorado Bend State Park was “such a success that we’re planning on making it a regularly occuring event,” says Sarah. Hike it Baby began in 2013 in Portland Oregon when new mother, Shanti
Ephraim and Cecily Taylor enjoy a hike. Photo courtesy Sarah Maxwell. Hodges, asked a few other new moms and their babies to join her and her baby on a hike. Within a few months, the newly formed organization grew from a few dozen families in Portland to more than 5,000 families in 28 cities. Currently,at least 70 hikes a week nationwide are led by Hike it Baby volunteers. FYI • Hike it Baby Austin organizes dozens of hikes a month around the Austin area - including several in the Dripping Springs area led by volunteer organizer Sarah Maxwell. For a schedule of hikes and more information on Hike it Baby, visit the web site at www.hikeitbaby.com, or join the Facebook page, “Hike it Baby Austin.”
