New food trailer court on Nutty Brown Road

ourtney Pogue is not much of a cook. Neither is her husband, Kevin, so the couple likes to eat out often. But as parents of a new baby, that proved hard to do. The solution they came up with was simple: instead of going to restaurants, they decided to bring the restaurants to them. Cedar Valley Eats, the newest food trailer court in the Dripping Springs area, opened earlier this year on land in front of the Pogue’s house on Nutty Brown Road, a half-mile south of Highway 290. The two-acre park offers sites for four food truck/trailers, ample parking adjacent to the court, tables in the shade of oak trees, a large playscape with swings, a slide, a tire swing and a Texas Tumbling Tower and a climbing wall for kids to enjoy while their parents

Courtney and Kevin, who both grew up in and attended school in Dripping Springs, have lived on Nutty Brown Road for four years and began planning the food trailer court more than two years ago. “I enjoy living in my five-mile radius, and thought this was a great location for a friendly neighborhood gathering spot,” Courtney says. “We want to make it a place for good food and fun in a family-friendly atmosphere.” She admits she and Kevin had felt increasingly disappointed with restaurant food and the experience – it seemed like they were paying more for décor and atmosphere and not getting quality food. Her first experience with food trailers, three or four years ago in Austin, was very positive. “Food trailers aren’t fried or unhealthy carnival food,” she explains. “They focus on a specific menu and offer a fusion of quality flavors.” Allowing diners to BYOB adds to the affordability and flexibility of the See CEDAR VALLEY EATS, page 3

Their first food vendors are John and Siria Muniz with Tia’s Kitchen from San Antonio, who offer smoked pork, brisket and chicken tacos and enchiladas featuring handmade tortillas (vegetarian options also available). “I looked at a lot of other locations, but this was the only one I liked,” Siria says. “It’s peaceful and calm, and the people are so friendly.” At her stand this Saturday morning is a man from Belterra (just across Nutty Brown Road), waiting on a particularly large order of breakfast tacos. “It’s my turn,” he shrugs and explains that he’s part of a group of 20 households that take turns fetching Saturday morning breakfast for the whole bunch. “We call ourselves ‘The Village’ – whoever ends up with the sombrero
on their porch goes for tacos the next time. “Everyone’s starting to come here now,” he adds. In March, Cedar Valley Eats partnered with another group of neighbors, the Ledgestone Lifesavers, to raise money for Relay for Life with their annual car show. This is the sixth year the Ledgestone group has sponsored the show, and at Cedar Valley Eats this year they raised more money than any other year. FYI • Cedar Valley Eats is located at 12710 Nutty Brown Road, a half mile south of Highway 290, next to the Views of Belterra and just across Nutty Brown Road from the main part of Belterra. Hours are Monday through Friday, 11 am to 6:30 pm and Saturday 8 am to 4 pm. Patrons may BYOB and there is ample free parking. Cedar Valley Eats is currently accepting applications for food trucks and trailers interested in long term tenancy. Get into the community spirit during First Thursday

he first Thursday evening of each month April through December, Dripping Springs celebrates its growing downtown festival, First Thursday. Merchants around the central business district stay open late and offer fun activities, food, entertainment and shopping discounts. Surprises are in store for people as they leisurely stroll the Mercer Street, Old Fitzhugh Road and Hays Street historic districts. Sponsored by the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, First Thursday brings people to town to eat in our restaurants, shop in our stores and pump dollars into the local economy, says the Chamber. Those businesses participating in First Thursday are marked with distinctive outdoor lighting and fly a banner featuring the First Thursday logo. Vendors offering unique wares and services setup outside downtown businesses. Among the growing list of businesses participating in First Thursday, shoppers can expect to find: Canyon Cycles and Jam Boutique for Mom, Baby & Kids will jointly celebrate their Ribbon Cuttings at May’s First Thursday. They’ll serve barbeque, beer and feature a demonstration of Intense Cycles mountain bikes. Sidecar Tasting Room offers live music on the outdoor patio, this month with Stefanie Fix. Thursday is their regular Trivia Night (inside) and as always, wine and small bites are available for patrons. Dripping with Delights’ new owner Tamara Joyce-Wylie relies on her son Foster to provide professional DJ music for the crowd that gathers on the front porch and parking area, or live musicians from DSHS to entertain the crowd of usually school-age youth. Inside, she offers tastings from her shelves of gourmet packaged foods - in May she’ll feature products from Wimberley Valley Gourmet: pickles, dipping herbs and pecan oil. And there’s
always the main attraction of frozen yogurt with toppings, and a storeful of handcrafted items, many produced by Dripping Springs artisans. DS Rental will have the Wyatt Weaver Band playing in the front. Vendors often set up in front of the old mid-century rockwalled gas station to sell interesting wares. The Barbershop Bar celebrates Thirsty Thursday with specials on Thirsty Goat pints. There is usually a vendor or two (or three) selling unique wares in front of the iconic beer pub. Pink West Salon owner, Deborah Carter Mastelotto, will be signing copies of her newly-released book, “The Tarot Primer,” at the salon this First Thursday. Copies will be available for purchase. Starrs on Mercer is a great place to sip wine at tables in Sisters’ Alley, enjoy live music on the front porch and find different specials and discounts every month. At May’s First Thursday, “Sue Ellen”, a white 1986 white Cadillac limousine will be on display in front of the store. Starrs sisters Melissa and Sarah have recently
added Sue Ellen to their wine tour operation. Mercer Street Dancehall offers free live music and dancing every Thursday evening from 8 pm to 11 pm. May’s First Thursday marks the last time the popular Doug Moreland Band will be playing the dancehall for the time foreseeable, as Doug takes to the road for extended travelling with his family. Revel Wilde, Fine Southern Goods, offers dips and mixes, along with wine and punch for First Thursdays. This month they’ll have a graduation sale of Jon Hart Luggage.
