Support the Friends Foundation October 8
A
By Laurel Robertson
ll the other days of the year, they’re busy “doing good deeds to meet the elderly’s needs.” But one day each year, members of The Friends Foundation invite the entire Dripping Springs community to their annual Friends Foundation Fundraiser, to celebrate and to raise money they’ll use all year to care for local elders in need. Thursday, October 8, the festive atmosphere of the 22nd annual fundraiser will fill the Salt Lick Pavilion. The celebration will overflow into the outdoor Tasting Tent where libations from Dripping Springs Artisan Gin, Duchman Family Winery, Thirsty Planet Brewing Company and Texas Tea will refresh palates while their owners peruse hundreds of amazing bargains in the huge Silent Auction (voted #1 in the State of Texas). The Salt Lick Pavilion gates open at 5
and the buffet line will serve barbeque from 6 pm to 8 pm. Homemade desserts prepared by the Bluebonnet Auxiliary will raise funds for volunteer programs at Hill Country Care Nursing and Rehab Center. The award-winning Hot Texas Swing Band will entertain with their polished rendition of traditional and modern Texas swing music. Bama Brown of KVET 98.1 hosts the evening’s events beginning at 7 pm, including a live auction with treasures ranging from a Texas Hills Vineyard Tasting Tour for twelve to an arrowhead collection dug up by old-time residents of Dripping Springs. Around 8 pm, raffle results will be announced: a pair of diamond earrings from Segner’s Jewelry, an iPad donated by Statewide Remodeling and a Home Depot impact driver will be awarded to three lucky winners. ripping Springs just took a large step towards becoming a walkable city. During the July meeting, City Council approved the Amended Trails Plan, which represents the culmination of many years’ planning by city committees, commissions, staff, consultants, volunteers and the community-at-large. The results: a network of hiking and biking trails to meet the community’s growing recreation and transportation needs now and into the future. The idea for creating a communitywide network of trails goes back to the city’s Comprehensive Plan of 2010, where the number one value listed was “walking and cycling are encouraged throughout the community.” The Sustainable Places Project of December 2012 called for a network of trails to move people around the downtown area, to make it easier for pedestrians to cross streets and to protect creeks and drainage areas. That same month, council approved a preliminary plan for a trail network, which promoted the concept, but didn’t specify where the trails would be or how they would be constructed, and didn’t incorporate them into the overall Transportation Plan. In 2015, respondents to the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan’s surveys and town hall meetings overwhelmingly ranked walking, hiking and bicycling trails as their highest priorities. Last year, council created a special Trails Committee under the Parks and Rec Committee, and tasked them with fleshing out the initial Trails Plan - laying out a map for trails and determining the best methods of construction. A grant from the National Parks Service provided the committee with Justin Bates, a trails planning specialist to assist in developing their

plan. The Trails Committee members came from diverse backgrounds: developers, land planners, health providers, physical education specialists and members of the general community. The Trails Committee ran an extensive survey of their own to pinpoint citizens’ highest needs for a trails system. “I was blown away by the 631 responses to the survey (huge for a population the size of Dripping Springs) and by how well the survey’s demographics reflected the city’s demographics,” Justin reported. The committee found a signifigant difference between responses from in-town residents and ETJ residents. People living within the city limits tended to want trails that were close to home and that transported them to common destinations: downtown, HEB and the city’s parks. People outside the city limits were more willing to drive to access trails for recreation. All the respondents seemed to share the same concerns about trails: safety, conflicting uses (motorized vehicles were not favored), and longterm upkeep. At July’s council meeting, the Trails Committee presented their findings and recommendations to council in the 2015 Amended Trails Plan. Their plan connects the five city parks by trails and makes it possible for pedestrians to safely and pleasantly move around the downtown area. The miles of proposed trails, many along creeks and natural areas, would offer extensive recreational choices for walkers, runners and bicyclists. The committee recommended 10-foot wide concrete trails, with 10-foot wide buffer zones on either side, as the standard building method. Concrete trails offer a “set it and forget it” maintenance that in the longterm is the least expensive, See TRAILS, page 5

Because they see the trails as a way of moving people around the downtown area without adding more cars to Highway 290 and Ranch Road 12, the committee recommended including the Trails Plan as part of the city’s overall Transportation Plan. “We see the Trails Plan as a multi-level system for people to get around besides driving,” said City Administrator and committee member Michelle Fischer. During the council’s discussions about the Amended Trails Plan, council member Charles Busbey took issue with the transportation aspect of the plan. “We have huge traffic problems that need to be addressed right now,” he told council. “Our priorites should Sarah Arabie RIGHT and Anne Brown LEFT in a cross country be roads. Dripping with Taste Food & Wine Fest
A

fter seven successful years, Dripping with Taste Wine and Food Festival could just operate on auto pilot, repeating the successful formula that's made it the Hill Country's premier wine and food taste tasting event. But, no, the eighth annual Dripping with Taste event September 12 adds even more tastes, tipples and fun to the festival that boasts "the most tastes of Texas under one roof." The roof covering all the sipping and savoring is the 166,000 square foot Event Center at Dripping Springs Ranch Park, which means there will be plenty of room for this year's 75 wine, beer, spirits and gourmet food vendors, along with an estimated 2,000 participants. Sponsored by the Dripping Springs Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, the festival was created to showcase the growing number of local vineyards, breweries, distilleries and gourmet food fares springing up around the area. Nineteen Texas wineries and five breweries will serve the perfect libations to pair with delectable food offered by 10 local restaurants and HEB. New this year, a large tent housing the Demonstation Booth, with comfortable seating for 100 and a sound system that will allow the demonstrating chefs and

food experts to be easily seen and heard. In the Distillery Room, the growing number of area distilleries will offer samples of their vodka, gin, bourbon and rum. Beyond food and drink, festival-goers can take in cooking demonstrations, Wine 101, specialty vendors, a free photo booth and feet-on grape stomping (with a t-shirt commemorating your red feet!) There'll be live music all afternoon, with the Billy Garza Band, Slim Bawb and the Fabulous Stumpgrinders, Chad and Natasha Hudson, and a "taste" of the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival. Pam Owens, director of the Chamber's Visitors Bureau, reports that ticket sales are brisk this year. "They're double from last year, and sales will be limited to less than 2,000, so folks should get their tickets early," she advises.
