Ballet school offers serious training for youth
I
By Laurel Robertson
t may be the newest dance school in town, but its approach is definitely “old school.” Central Texas Youth Ballet (CTYB) opened in Dripping Springs this past September to offer classical ballet training, including the rigorous discipline needed to pursue a professional career in dance, says owner and head instructor Rena Reeder. Like an artist who trains to be a concert pianist or an athlete who strives to be a professional ball player, aspiring dancers need to practice on nearly a daily basis and have a deep commitment to their craft, Rena believes. “I want to offer training for kids who want to pursue dance as a profession,” says the young woman who has loved ballet since childood. “In California and the Northeast, you find a quality of serious training that you just don’t find in the rest of the
country. I want to be that place here,” she says with conviction. CTYB students don’t take part in dance competitions. Instead, class attendance and hard work are rewarded with roles in stage performances throughout the year. Since they’re not distracted by scores and trophies, dancing students can focus more on growing artistically, Rena says. Parents are not expected to purchase costumes and pay competition entry fees. “When kids strive to achieve their personal best - not to get a trophy - they realize the reward in working towards their own personal goals,” says Rena. “That practice and work ethic transfers to the rest of their lives,” she believes. This month, a CTYB group will dance at Christmas on Mercer (Saturday, December 5), performing a vignette See YOUTH BALLET, page 2

YOUTH BALLET, from page 1 from “The Nutcracker.” As a young child growing up in Corpus Christi, Texas, Rena fell in love with ballet. At the age of 16, she studied with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet under renowned instructor Marcia Dale Weary and knew she’d found her life’s calling. But her father saw it differently. “He didn’t see ballet as a serious career path, so my option became to go to UT and study something more ‘realistic,’” she recalls. After graduation, Rena had a sucessful career in advertising, but always missed ballet. She trained in Pilates and taught for a few years at the Pilates Center of Austin. Finally, her love of ballet drove her to contact Marcia and begin an 18-month internship to study dance pedagogy with her former teacher in Pennsylvania. Rena says she followed in Marcia’s footsteps all day, absorbing her teaching techniques. In Creative Movement classes, preschoolers are grouped by age and learn rhythm, balance, patterns, coordination and gain a kinesthetic awareness of their body in space. There are also pre-ballet and pre-tap classes for children ages five-six. Primary Division classes (ages seven and up) place strong emphasis on developing basic ballet technique. Students advance based on ability, not age. Tuition fees entitle students to attend all classes at or below their ability level. Adult classes are “very relaxed and on a come-when-you can basis,” says Rena. Class offerings include ballet, tap and Pilates mat classes. Former dance experience is great, Rena says, but not necessary - total beginners are welcome. Tuition is by the single class or discounted with a punch card purchase. Dance Conditioning for Athletes is open to males ages 11-18. The class is designed to serve as part of an athlete’s cross training program to improve flexibility, agility, balance, body awareness, endurance and stability of the feet and leg muscles. Rena points out that Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker and the Pittsburgh Steelers took ballet
classes to improve their athletic performance. Rena is assisted in teaching by Catherine Fowle, who also studied at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and at Ballet Austin Academy. Most recently, she was on the faculty at Eglevsky Ballet in Bethpage, New York. Catherine has performed in a variety of classical ballets and works choreographed by George Balanchine. Seven Rivers Fitness and Yoga uses studio space at CTYB for their yoga and kickboxing classes. Whirligig Music also holds its Music Together classes (for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their accompanying grownups) at CTYB. So now does her dad see her ballet school as a “realistic way to make a living?” “Absolutely,” Rena smiles. “When he saw me consistently working for 10 years to accomplish my dream, my dedication changed his mind. Both my parents completely support seeing my school come to life.” FYI • Central Texas Youth Ballet is located at 400 West Highway 290 in the Spring Bluff Center. The fifth grade class at St. Martin’s also makes Christmas cards for the families. Helping Hands Elf Project Helping Hands Elf Project has been helping Dripping Springs families during the Christmas season for more than 25 years by providing toys, clothing and books for children who otherwise might go without this time of year. Head Elf Consuela Davidson coordinates a crew of about 40 helpers that will distribute more than 2,500 gifts on December 19, in time to help create a happy holiday for many families in the DSISD area. Helping Hands, the Hays County Sheriff’s office, and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul are gathering donations to provide food, toys and gifts for local families in need during the holidays. gender and special gift requests is printed onto paper “mittens” that decorate evergreen trees located at 35 churches, businesses and schools around Dripping Springs from November to December 13. Each child receives one toy and one clothing request, along with a book. People in the community are encouraged to select a mitten from a tree and purchase the requested item ($50 spending limit). The Elf Project also seeks new or gently used children’s books and cash donations, which are used to purchase requested items. Donors bring the requested item(s) (gift-wrapped, if possible) to “the North Pole” (a vacant warehouse or business location provided each year by local
businessman Whit Hanks) from December 14-18. The North Pole is abuzz with activity from December 14-19, as volunteers busily sort all the donated gifts by family and child, ready for the joyful pickup on December 19. Help of all kinds — including sorting, stacking, shopping, wrapping and cleanup — is needed and welcomed by the crew of volunteers. Helping Hands, Inc., with its motto of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” also sponsors a twice-weekly food pantry in Dripping Springs and a yearly school supply drive, “Stuff the Bus.” Their sole fundraiser is the Empty Bowl Project each November.
