Wild game dinner, charity auction February 21

D

By Laurel Robertson

ine on the wild side! At this year’s Wild Game Dinner, dig into all-you-can-eat elk enchiladas, pheasant gumbo, rabbit dumplings, and a dozen other exotic offerings with all the trimmings — all while helping children, families and seniors in Dripping Springs live happier, safer lives. The 25th annual Dripping Springs Wild Game Dinner and Charity Auction Saturday, February 21, will fill the Dripping Springs High School cafeteria with the finest in Hill Country native and exotic fare and offer one of the largest live and silent auctions around. Dripping Springs’ largest annual fundraiser is organized by the United Methodist Men of the Dripping Springs United Methodist Church. All proceeds from the dinner and auctions benefit local charities such as the Friends Founda-

tion, the Burke Center for Youth, Helping Hands, and the Hill Country Senior Citizens Activity Center - and missions and ministries of the DSUMC, including Boy Scouts, Kairos Prison Ministry and the DS Adult Education Program. Proceeds from last year’s dinner topped $90,000. All the wild game is donated by local hunters and exotic game ranches and cooked by the Methodist Men. Kitchen staff at the high school cook side dishes and help serve. The Dripping Springs United Methodist Women provide tables full of desserts, and singer-songwriter Clay McClinton will entertain with his Texas Roots music during the meal. New this year is the Kid Zone, a structured and supervised event in the high school’s gym where kids four years through fifth grade can be entertained during the evening’s auctions. activities include a bounce house, ball games, movies and other age-appropriate fun. Live and silent auctions are the heart of the event’s fundraising efforts. Past years’ items have ranged from yardwork courtesy of the Methodist Youth Group to a one-week stay at a villa condo in Steamboat Springs. Bidders are likely to find wine tours, hunting and fishing packages, catered dinners, handmade quilts, jewelry, artwork, yard sculpture - some years even a prize puppy up for bid! The Grand Prize in this year’s Raffle is a custom Yamaha gas-driven golf cart that seats four and includes a hard top, wind screen, front-mounted gear cage and a camouflage body wrap. The entire event is a labor of love for the hundred-plus volunteers who have polished the massive fundraiser into “a well-oiled machine,” says this year’s PR chair Paul Brown. The large quantities of wild game are processed and frozen the preceding fall and winter. The two days before the annual dinner are a blitzkrieg of prepping and cook-

ing, with all-hands-on-deck on Friday for “Call in Sick to Work Day,” when the volunteers get the 400-600 pounds of meats cut, ground, marinated and ready for cooking. On Saturday, on a flotilla of barbecue pits anchored in the church parking lot, an army of willing cooks turn the prepped elk, pheasant, quail, dove, deer, wild turkey, rabbit, wild pig, (and an occasional antelope, caribou or moose) into roasts, cutlets, grilled ribs, chili, enchiladas, lasagna, chili, carne guisada, gumbo, rabbit stew (with dumplings!) and more. “We also serve regular beef brisket as a ‘security choice,’” Paul laughs. All volunteers are welcome - and encouraged to come help on Friday or Saturday. “Call ahead - or just show up and we’ll put you to work,” suggests Paul. Volunteers are needed at the church Saturday morning, and at the high school after 4 pm, he says. FYI • The 25th Annual Wild Game Dinner will be Saturday, February 21 beginning at 6 pm at Dripping Springs High School Cafeteria. Tickets and more information are available on the web site at dswildgamedinner.com, at the door, or by calling 512-894-7123.

The Sweet Spot

Perfect spot for all your sweets, treats

ike the witch’s house in Hansel and Gretel, the tiny yellow house on Highway 290, filled to the brim with every candy you can imagine, is a kid (and adult!) magnet. But unlike that fateful candy cottage in the forest, The Sweet Spot candy store in Dripping Springs is a wonderful experience for the kid in everyone. And no one could be less like the fairy tale’s evil witch than Elizabeth Wilkerson, The Sweet Spot’s owner and chief magician. The tall, willowy blonde is more like a Pied Piper to the throngs of happy kids that fill her shop after school and on Saturdays. Beyond stocking every candy they —and their parents and grandparents— love, Elizabeth has created a fun, inviting and safe place where kids (and those that care about them) can enjoy themselves. “How could you not have fun here?” she asks rhetorically. Elizabeth encourages kids to decorate her walls with their artwork and writings; she keeps a collection of feather and tinsel braids to tie into their hair; there’s even a mannequin to dress up for each holiday. A back patio opens onto a grassy yard where fair weather games are frequent. Knowing what kids like comes naturally to the mother of six. When she decided to open a candy store in the ramshackle little house, she and her husband (who owns construction company) renovated it inside and out. Bright colors predominate—the CANDY letters out front are hard to miss, along with the 1956 pink-and-white Metropolitan Nash parked in the yard (especially when it sports a painted MexicanSee THE SWEET SPOT, page 7

FEBRUARY 2015 THE SWEET SPOT, from page 6 style skull.) It’s not just kids who are attracted to the house of candy. Grandparents, especially, seem to like it as a great outing with their grandkids - or as a place to find the nostalgic candy they remember from their childhood, says Elizabeth. They delight over the Candy Mashes, Slo Pokes, Goo Goo Clusters, Teaberry gum, Fizzies and candy cigarettes that the Sweet Spot carries. Much of the candy is stocked in clear bins and sells by the pound - one price for everything, so customers can fill their bag with as wide an assortment as they choose. For added interest, there are scorpion suckers, ant candy, five-pound gummy bears, and Elizabeth’s favorite - dill pickles dipped in Kool Aid. That treat is so popular she has trouble keeping it in stock. The Sweet Spot carries eleven flavors of the sought-after Dublin Bottling Works sodas, made with pure cane sugar in Dublin, Texas. Elizabeth has discovered an interesting secret about the sodas - to find it out, you’ll have to come in and ask her to demonstrate! For Valentine’s Day, The Sweet Spot will have a large selection of hand-dipped truffles and “old school Valentine boxes” that can be custom-filled with whatever candies the customer chooses. Elizabeth also makes up boxes of candies for fairs and special events, packaged in Chinese food takeout containers. With the hundreds of candies available at The Sweet Spot, the variety of combinations is almost limitless. Her own six kids were thrilled to have
