Empty Bowls Project moves to Mercer Street

elp create the miracle of empty bowls feeding hungry mouths all year long at the 18th annual Empty Bowls Project November 1. From 11 am to 4 pm, the fundraiser that benefits Dripping Springs’ Helping Hands, Inc. will fill Mercer Street with good food for a great cause. After spending its first 17 years at Sunset Canyon Pottery, this year The Empty Bowls Project is moving to a new, bigger venue at Mercer Street Dancehall. Parking will be plentiful, soup lines will be short, and other businesses along Mercer Street will be open to offer their support for the fundraiser that stocks the shelves of the Helping Hands Food Pantry. Bill and Bridget Hauser, owners of Sunset Canyon Pottery, will donate 1,000 hand-thrown pottery bowls that can be
filled with your choice of dozens of delicious soups prepared by more than 20 Dripping Springs and Austin area restaurants. Artisan breads and gourmet cookies will round out the menu. Tea, soft drinks and adult beverages will be available to purchase from Mercer Street Dancehall. In addition to enjoying wonderful food, guests get to take the beautiful handcrafted bowl they select home with them. Music from Alex Dormont, the Hill Country Ramblers, The Bonfire Choir, and Chad and Natasha Hudson will keep the dancehall lively and its dancefloor busy all afternoon. Proceeds from the day’s events help to purchase food for the Helping Hands Food Pantry and support other Helping Hands programs benefiting needy families in the community. See EMPTY BOWLS, page 2

n her eventful life, Allison Wilcox has had to learn how to unwind. Whether it’s recovering from a stressful day in court serving as guardian for children in high-conflict divorce cases, fighting leukemia in her early 30s, or surviving 12 days lost at sea while she was five months pregnant, Allison has had several opportunities to work out the unwinding issue. Her best formula? Sitting with a girlfriend, a glass of wine, a ball of yarn and her knitting needles. So, when she got the chance to open her own business this past summer, Allison thought “why not have a place where there’s someone to help you do that?” And the Sated Sheep was born. Part fiber arts shop, part wine bar/ beer pub, it’s 100 percent Dripping Springs originality at its best. “I used to shop online for yarns, because knitting shop owners could make me feel like an idiot,” she admits. “I think a lot of people feel intimidated. I created The Sated Sheep to be a place where you feel like staying. No one cares if you knit well!” she declares. Allison learned to knit when her son was in Waldorf school, to help him learn that skill in the primary grades. “Ages six to eight are a very good time to for kids to learn to knit,” says the Ph.D. psychologist. “Reseach shows that it helps develops sensory motor integration at that age, a very important brain development. Knitting and crocheting also help stroke and brain injury patients create new cognitive processing - and it’s definitely calming,” she adds. The clean, soothing lines of the modern black-and-white interior are a serene backdrop for the brillant colors of yarn and fibers that fill the shop. A large center table, where knitting and crochet instructor Carrie Au sits crocheting a shawl today, is the natural hub. Small tables off to the side offer quiet spots for needle working and conversation. The menu starts with Tazo teas and coffee drinks (they’ve got your latte!) and continues through European beers, international wines and a selection of bubblies. There’s even port and Crubom Chocolate Boms (organic and healthy...) for serious unwinding. The shelves and walls are lined with artisan yarns of every weight and material, from lacey to bulky, sourced from as far away as Uruguay, Indonesia, Britain, and Japan and as nearby as Bandera and Austin. Allison stocks an enticing array of tools of the trade, including knitting needles made from wood, metal and Karbonz. There are also unusual notions for finishing out knitting and crocheting projects, such as buttons shaped like hedgeSee SATED SHEEP, page 5

Classes in knitting, crocheting and felting are plentiful. Three instructors on a rotating schedule mean that there’s someone in the shop Tuesday through Sunday to teach and answer questions. Starting with beginning knitting and crochet classes, and continuing into sock and sweater knitting classes, there’s instruction for every level, including special two-hour classes for children. Drop-in help (5-35 minutes) is available by the single visit or a four-session punch card; private lessons are available by appointment. Workshops and special events are scheduled frequently. Knitalongs and quick questions/help are always free. Mondays are massage days with Rebecca Thomas Ruiz, LMT (get 10 percent
off any Sated Sheep purchase when you come in for a massage). Trade-in Tuesdays (no cost to put a ball of yarn in the swap basket, take a ball out) won’t diminish your stash pile, but you might find a hidden treasure! The Sated Sheep participates in downtown Dripping Springs’ monthly First Thursday celebration, offering 10 percent off any purchases during First Thursday. FYI • The Sated Sheep is located at Highway 290 and Mercer Street in the Commons Shopping Center, between the UPS Store and Grand Slam Pizza. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 11 am to 8 pm; Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm; and Sunday 12 pm to 5 pm. Mondays feature massage with Rebecca (closed to the public). For more information, call 512-829-4607, visit their website at www.thesatedsheep.com, or see The Sated Sheep on Facebook.
