I
f there was ever a traditional-style Texas dancehall that was meant to be it’s Dripping Springs’ uber-popular Mercer Dance Hall. Yep, this enjoyable old-school emporium of the booted two-step was simply (or not so simply) destined for being because of what its founding father, mother and daughter all brought to the floor – dancefloor, that is. And the happy result, thanks to their combined strengths, desires and values, was no less than making their “joint” creation one of the area’s most visited venues where each weekend music, merriment and motion all magically meld. And, it’s all very up-beat too! The Mercer Street Dance Hall (named for its original location in Dripping Springs, it’s since moved right up the road) first opening its doors to the public in 2013 but, its story starts much earlier when Nick Dotin, a respected professional musician, sound engineer and recording studio operator experienced a “life-changing” physical affliction. As he recalls, “My doctor said I needed to alter my lifestyle – playing non-stop gigs was killing me.” But what to do? The native San Antonian had moved to the area with his wife, Gay, and daughter, Shelby, in 2002 and, it was their enthusiastic input that provided the answer: “Let’s open a dancehall right here in Dripping Springs!” Surprised, Nick thought it over and realized, “It made sense.” With his 45-year background in music, Gay’s extensive work within the hospitality industry

and Shelby’s substantial people-skills along with her love of Country/Western dancing, establishing and operating such a business seemed not only doable but, “almost fated to be.” And that definitely seems to be the case. Opening first in a refurbished (and leased) “barn” on Mercer Street with the Dotin family shouldering most of the duties (as they still do), the hall soon “found its legs.” Then later, the decision was made to relocate a few miles away on Ranch Road 12 on property the family owned and build from scratch a brand new, self-designed, even better facility. Wow! The new Mercer Dance Hall opened for business four years ago and, as the locals will attest, “The town’s been hopping and happening even more since.” A visit today to the “new” Mercer (the Dotins have kind of dropped the “street” from the name) Dance Hall pays tribute to the family’s success in creating, as Shelby attests, “Something wonderful.” Located on 3.5 scenic acres, the spacious, welcoming and completely climatecontrolled 5000-square-foot hall boasting a 22-foot ceiling and 1,000 square-feet of open hickory-wood dance floor dominates the property. the musician-friendly performance stage, visitors will find lots of comfy and accommodating seating and tables perfect for listening, relaxing and sipping a longneck or two (provided by the venue’s very well-stocked bar. There’s also some great chow available as well.). The interior atmosphere is further enhanced by the many performance posters and neon beer signs that adorn the walls. Couple all that with the unsurpassed acoustics (Nick usually acts as the guest band’s sound man) and you’ve got a real get-down, get-it-on Texas music hall. Yee-ha! But there’s more: Outside, an adjoining 1,600 square-foot patio allows even more room for chilling. The essential services (restrooms) are housed in their own separate (and spotless) facility a short walk away. The attractive grounds further invite strolling and, parking is plentiful and close. So, who gets booked at the Mercer? Well, there have certainly been some big names (Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel has been a repeat performer) but what attracts many is the area’s local talent that has found a home at the dancehall. Included are such as Weldon Henson, Bob Appel, Fingerpistol, David Touchton, The Golden Roses and Jake Penrod, to name a few. Famous or just starting out, rest assured that whoever graces the stage has been vetted by the Dotins and is more than worthy for an appearance. Most performances last about three hours and, that allows for a lot of dancing. Lastly, as an adjunct business, the property also has four cozy guest cabins rentable to overnighters who just don’t want to leave. The entire hall is also bookable for private parties, weddings, family reunions and other group gatherings. So, you see what we mean when we say the Mercer Dancehall was “meant to be” because, with folks like the Dotins who love music, dancing and making people happy, just what else could they do? Or, as the saying goes, “If the boot fits, you got to wear it!” FYI • Mercer Dance Hall is located just outside of Dripping Springs at 23490 Ranch Road 12 in Driftwood. or successful business executives (and very happily married couple) Kelley and Chris Baber, finding escape from their shared Abilene-based corporate world revolved around two things – regularly seeking respite in the relaxing and welcoming Texas Hill Country while also pursuing their lifelong passion for all things wine. Yes sir, by 2020, the Babers had gone beyond their weekend excursions, moved to bucolic Comfort and opened their muchlauded Hill Country Wineworks, an aspirational business built around the development, sales and enjoyment of quality wines all in an atmosphere reflecting the laid-back, always hospitable, slower-paced lifestyle the Hill Country is famous for. What a logical and appropriate outcome! So, read on and you’ll discover how these two oenophiles have melded their loves of location and libation into one of the area’s most refreshing destinations. Chris’s affinity for wine goes back decades. He always enjoyed a glassful and being the curious type, began tinkering with winemaking as well. His efforts in this area, entirely supported through self-study, eventually yielded some surprising results. Not only did his friends (and Kelley) relish sharing in his output but he even won a gold in a prestigious international amateur competition.Throughout this time Kelley, while offering support, stayed out of the production process but did assist with other aspects such as the labeling and bottling (and of course, the tasting testing too). Yep, wine had definitely been in their mix for quite some time. The Hill Country connection came after the two had met (at work) in Abilene – Chris’ hometown. She’s from St. Louis. Neither had initially spent much time in the Hill Country but, after encountering the same, both quickly “fell in love” with what they experienced. While dating, they explored large portions at every opportunity. And, when they married, they did so in Fredericksburg. A move was inevitable. See WINEWORKS, page 12

So, why create the Hill Country Wineworks? As Chris explains, “It just made sense. We both enjoy wine, we both love the Hill Country and especially, we enjoy meeting folks with similar likes and tastes. What better way to bring everything together than opening a fun business here in our adopted Comfort where people and product can, and do, come comfortably together?” Well, let’s take a look at their undertaking. Once committed to the idea, Kelly and Chris were fortunate to find “the perfect location” for their HCW. Just outside of Comfort on Highway 87 near I 10 on a pretty piece of property, they found a reconstructed 1865 cabin. After expanding the same, the structure now boasts an inventory-displaying tasting room with beckoning fireplace as well as three cozy, adjoining (somewhat private) sitting rooms. All encourage relaxation, conversation and sampling. Even with the expansion, the entire structure remains an intimate 1,700 square-feet and, as Kelley offers, “Many of our visitors have commented that the overall feel within is like being a welcome guest in a home.” That feeling of invitation pervades the exterior porch and picnic areas as well. But what about the wine? Regarding this very important aspect of the biz surprisingly, Chris and Kelley aren’t actually “making wines” – yet! Rather, they’ve formed partnerships with several top-quality, well-established commercial wineries – one in north Texas, one in California and one in the Hill Country – that, as Chris relates “Were willing to work with us on creating special wines that are approachable and unique.” To that end, HCW now stocks an amazing assortment of ten custom “house wines” including white and red blends, a sangria, a Mourvedre, a Viognier and a Roussanne, among others. All are excellent, all bear the Hill Country Wineworks label and all are available on site (by the glass or bottle) and/or via the internet. The focus has primarily been on dry reds and whites but they do stock some off-dry varieties for customers who want a little sweetness. Lastly, add to any of these several a la carte charcuterie offerings that pair perfectly with the vino and as Kelley admits, “A visit can end up lasting for hours.” Cheers! So seekers, come and experience what success means when superb wines are graciously offered in a treasured environment. Or in other words, where a love of location and a love of libation meld. Frio Bat Flight
F
rom March through September on a ranch near Concan, you can watch in delight as 10- to 12-million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from Frio Cave at Frio Bat Flight. The beautiful and private 10,000-acre property on which the cave is located has been continuously owned by the same family since 1874. Bain and Kirstin Walker run Frio Bat Flight tours, each season hosting a whopping 3,000 to 4,000 visitors, all who come to see the second largest bat population in the world (that’s open to the public). Bain takes questions from audience members as the crowd waits in anticipation for the bats to begin emerging from the cave about 30 minutes before sunset. These bats will travel up to 35 miles from the cave every night, covering several hundred miles in one evening. They are insectivores, preferring to dine on agricultural pests. “Scientists
have discovered the bats eat, on average, their body weight nightly. That amounts to about 100 tons of insects a year!” says Bain. exquisitely defining the cowboy culture in precious metal

tched into the ethos that comprises the cowboy culture runs a deep commitment to hard work, integrity, strength and pride of accomplishment. This philosophy might be embodied in numerous ways – respect for others, honesty in all things, an appreciation for quality and above all, the insistence on doing, “a job well done.” And, for Ingram’s gifted resident artist and superb metalsmith Clint Orms, all of the above aptly apply as demonstrated by every exceptional creation bearing his name, each perfectly reflecting his definition of what it means to be a cowboy. Born in Wichita Falls but in the Texas Hill Country since 2003, Clint has spent a life that only a real Texan could. Raised in a loving family where values and work ethics were emphasized, as a youngster Clint admired his father for his rough-stock skills (especially his competitive bareback riding) and also the many true cowboys who close to the Orms’ clan. It was their influences that ultimately shaped the man. Admittedly, Clint learned much from those who roped, rode and rodeoed but, always having an artistic side, it was another family friend, respected Western artist Buck Brumley, who would offer inspiration, encouragement and advice that would result in Clint’s decision to turn creation into a livelihood. And, from all who are familiar with Clint’s prodigious output since, we say “Thank you, Buck!” Professionally speaking, it was as a high schooler when Clint first sold one of his works – a handsome tooled leather belt. Primarily self-taught, he had been skilled in traditional leather carving for some time. However, under Buck’s tutorship, he soon expanded his talents to include jewelry designing, making and engraving. Always influenced by the beautiful, oversized rodeo “trophy” belt buckles and other silver adornments he had been exposed to since childhood, he began to replicate, and build on the (Western-style and even art deco) patterns that were pioneered in the early 20th Century while always adding that special “Orms’ touch.” See ORMS METAL, page 20

Selling himself while continuing to grow at different silver engraving firms across the nation (and world), Clint finally embarked on a more personal path and established his own company in 1992 – Clint Orms, Engravers and Silversmiths. Desiring a “more relaxed and rural” setting, he and his family relocated to Ingram 11 years later where his business continues to flourish. Today, his ever-expanding company not only produces a large variety of custom and stock traditional trophy-style buckles but also the popular buckle and tip sets for exquisite ranger and/or more standard Western belts. Actual belts finished in cowhide and exotic leather are available as well completing the “package.” But beyond must-have cowboy-style buckles and belts, his inventory also includes delightful money clips, heavy Texas-chic bracelets and myriad other amazing objects all expertly wrought in silver and gold with many sporting diamonds, sapphires, rubies, turquoise and garnets. Clint and crew are happy as well to “take on” the unexpected too. As he recalls, “We were even asked to make a Rolls Royce hood ornament with a snowboarding angel. Now that was a bit different – but fun.” In a more normal vein, his company has also been tasked with designing and fabricating many special commemorative creations commissioned from national and international (sporting and business) organizations. Whatever the assignment, explaining the intricacies each handmade piece exhibits is impossible since how the metal is worked, decorated and finished varies from piece to piece. Some may have more than 100 individual component parts and require up to 100 hours to complete. No matter the complexity, the one thing all have in common is that each is undeniably a unique work of art – art that says “Texas, the greater Southwest and of course, cowboys.” Lastly, aside from the obvious quality of the workmanship coupled with the exceptional materials used, the first and foremost ingredient to ensure success (especially where commissioned work is concerned) is Clint’s ability to discern exactly what the customer 20 Hill Country SUN

desires. This is accomplished early on by close, personal discussions with the client to determine individual tastes and especially, expectations so that when a project is completed, all are pleased. Celebrating 61 years Old Settlers Reunion
Peach Jamboree & Rodeo
CAMP WOOD H Enjoy a family-friendly event in downtown Camp Wood at the 61st Annual Nueces Canyon Old Settlers Reunion. The annual event also features a parade, live music, a rodeo and dance. Friday, August 6, Nueces Canyon ex-students and teachers will enjoy a reunion at Lindbergh Park at 7 pm, with live music by Shane Stumpf. Saturday at 10 am starts with a parade in downtown Camp Wood. Following the parade, event highlights include the king and queen coronation, the annual pie and salsa contests, and a decades-old washer and horseshoe tournament (fee for washers and horseshoes) in Lindbergh Park. Several live music and entertainment groups, including Shane Stumpf, will be on stage until 4 pm. Vendors offer a wide selection of artwork, crafts, woodwork, leatherwork, jewelry, candles, paintings, hats, baked goods, stonework, taxidermy, new clothing, handbags, and more. Plus, enjoy game booths, a bounce houses for the kids, and an excellent variety of food vendors. A rodeo and dance follow at Bruce Park on Texas Highway 55, one mile north of Camp Wood.
STONEWALL H Stonewall’s Peach Jamboree June 16-18, 2022 is the 61st celebration of the annual peach crop including peach judging, crowning of the Peach Queen, a parade, peach eating, pit spitting, food vendors, mutton bustin’, music and a rodeo. A free slack rodeo on Thursday night is followed by a free dance featuring The Wagon Aces. The Friday night CPRA Rodeo will feature a calf scramble, mutton bustin’, and more, followed by a dance with music by Granger Smith. Saturday events kick off with a morning parade at 10 am, followed by a full day of events - including a washer pitching tournament, 42 tournament, salsa and baking contest, and more - and an evening CPRA rodeo and dance featuring Muscadine Bloodline . Tickets for the Peach Jamboree are available at the event ticket window and online. Concessions also available. Daytime activities on Saturday are free. Honey Festival in Uvalde June 10-11 UVALDE H Uvalde Honey Festival, Inc. announced official dates and plans for the Uvalde Honey Festival, to be held in downtown Uvalde June 10-11, 2022. The festival, in its third year, will include street food from local vendors, a 5K race, live music from several Texas-based bands, kid-friendly activities and late-night shopping, among many other fun-filled attractions. The event was originally held in 2019, and was created to celebrate, honor and embrace Uvalde’s long, rich history as the Honey Capital of the World. In the 1870’s, pioneer settlers found an abundance of hollow trees and caves filled with honey in the modern-day Uvalde area. The area was also found to be rich in guajillo bushes, a key source of the nectar needed for the honey that Uvalde now famously produces. Legend has it, during the 1905 World’s Fair, Uvalde was honored as the Honey Capital of the World, the last time that title was given. With that title never challenged, and the vast production of honey in the area, the annual Uvalde Honey Festival
embraces, honors and celebrates that rich history with a weekend of food, music, activities, shopping, and all things honey! The Uvalde Honey Festival, held primarily at the city’s Downtown Plaza, kicks off on Friday, June 10 at 6 pm, to once again coincide with Four Square Friday. The Uvalde Honey Festival 5K is Saturday at 8 am. Sign up information for the 5K is available on the website. The event will also be filled with live music from Will Bannister, Slim Bawb & The Fabulous Stumpgrinders, the Texas Trio, Bri Bagwell and other local and regional artists. A full band lineup will be released on the event’s social media channels leading up to the festival. Leakey takes July Jubilee to new level LEAKEY H The 46th annual July Jubilee celebration is set for this year’s 4th of July weekend, July 1-3, 2022. Celebrating America’s Independence Day in good ol’ fashioned Main Street style is something Leakey prides itself on. Visitors should not miss the annual 4th of July Parade (Saturday), the Leakey Rodeo (Friday and Saturday nights), or the Vendor Market on the Courthouse Square (Saturday and Sunday). And this year, multi-Grammy award winning Asleep At the Wheel, will close out the festivities at the July Jubilee Concert & Street Dance on Saturday night! Ray Benson, Founder and lead singer of Asleep At The Wheel, offered a statement this week, “Looking forward to having a big ol’ time with folks dancing in the streets, in beautiful Leakey, celebrating America! Doesn’t get any better than that!” Last year, after eight years without a street dance, Leakey’s July Jubilee Concert and Street Dance (a beloved community event as far back as anyone can remember), returned to the courthouse square and Leakey welcomed iconic Texas artist Gary P. Nunn & Sons of the Bunkhouse and it was a huge success! This year’s Concert and Street Dance will be the largest concert in downtown Leakey’s history, thanks to generous contributions by sponsors, led by Cavender Auto Family. Saturday, July 2, Asleep at the Wheel headlines at 10 pm along with rising country star, Jesse Daniel, who opens the street dance at 8:30 pm.
