DRIFTWOOD H The Keith and Sandra Tuck family will host the 9th Annual Brittany Tuck Memorial Benefit, Barbecue Cook-Off and Concert Sunday, March 10, at Camp Ben McCulloch. The event features live music and dancing for all ages with Honeybrowne, Brandon Jenkins, Texas Renegade, Chad Hudson, Michael Myers, The Jerry Martin Band and Jeff Whitehead. Plus silent and live auctions, kids’ activities, barbecue, washer pitching and more on the grounds of Camp Ben McCulloch. This celebration of Brittany Tuck’s life honors the oldest child of Keith Tuck, football coach and head softball coach at Dripping Springs High School and Sandra Tuck, educator in both the Lake Travis and Dripping Springs school districts. Brittany tragically died in

December 2003, while traveling home from Sam Houston State University. As a tribute to their daughter and all she stood for, the Tucks award scholarships to seniors from Dripping Springs, Lake Travis, and Dayton High Schools— all schools Brittany attended. Over the past eight years of combining the celebration of a precious life and fundraising, more than $140,000 has been raised and awarded to local high school seniors. FYI • The benefit begins at noon and lasts until 9 pm. Competitors in the barbecue cook-off will set up Friday night with judging during the benefit. Entry fee is $50, briskets are provided. For more information, call Keith Tuck at 936-334-6407. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 8-12. Children 7 and under get in free. To donate, email keith.tuck@dripping-springs.txed.net or visit the web site at www.brittanytuck.com.

to a loving, average-heighted family, Sonny, as he freely admits, enjoyed a fairly “normal” childhood riding bikes, playing with friends, attending school, basically just being your average All-American boy. And, while admittedly short, he didn’t expect, want or seek any special treatment or “help” from others when his diminutive physical stature became an issue. Sonny liked to figure out ways on his own when confronted with height or reach obstacles – As he adamantly states, “I’d just deal with it.” What made his “dealing with it” easier perhaps was Sonny’s always inquiring and mechanical nature. He loved to tinker, experiment and build but, he especially loved “wheels” – the faster the better. In elementary school he single-handedly designed and constructed a soap box derby car that placed second in a statewide competition. Homemade, gasolinepowered go-carts came next. By the age of 14, thanks to the proceeds of a neighborhood paper route, Sonny, without his parent’s knowledge, bought, and restored, his first automobile – a channeled 1929 Ford roadster. Upon discovery, when he drove it home for the first time (using self-made extended pedals for the brake and accelerator) from a friend’s house where it had been secreted, his mother and father, as Sonny recalls, “Had a fit. They just knew I’d kill myself.” While continually honing his skills by working after school for a number of neighborhood “shade-tree” mechanics, in 1953, at the tender age of 17 the youthful but now accomplished “gearhead” an-

nounced his intentions of moving to California. Lured by the prospect of working in the West Coast-based aviation industry, with his parents’ tacit approval, a bold Sonny, this time in a 1932 Ford coupe he rebuilt, headed west. Once there, it wasn’t long before he landed a job with Lockheed where he would remain for the next 27 years. And, not so surprisingly perhaps, it was his short size and agility that initially earned him entry – he was able to work more comfortably in tight spaces like aircraft fuel tanks and cramped fuselages. As he remembers, “My height made me invaluable.” So, while Lockheed paid the bills, his free time still remained devoted to “building cars.” He did manage briefly to shift his attentions away from the racing world when he began courting a young lady (also short) named Dixie, who would later become his wife and invaluable lifelong partner – they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. During his years in California and later, after returning to San Antonio, Sonny’s reputation grew as he built, raced and “showed” cars and motorcycles across the southwestern United States. He also began writing very popular technical articles featured regularly in some of the industry’s premier publications, including the popular Street Rodder magazine. Some of his creations over the last half century (he’s built about 50) include his 1923 T-Roadster with a fuel injected, See SONNY ROSSI, page 5

Pontiac engine, another 1923 Ford featuring a high-tech carbon-fiber front nose that was reconfigured for salt flat racing (where it missed setting a record by 3/10ths of a second), a 650 cc, twin carbureted Triumph motorcycle with a twowheeled go-cart front end that was clocked in the quarter mile at 140 mph, even a tricked-out 1937 Chevy four-door sedan (with air and power steering). Everything built was expertly “finished” in steel, aluminum, paint, chrome and milled wood. And incredibly, almost all of the conceptual work, fabrication, machining, construction and labor, Sonny handled single-handedly. Some of these vehicles required two and half years to complete. Upon returning to his home town of San Antonio in the early 1980s after retirement from Lockheed, Sonny (thanks to his burgeoning, national reputation), quickly landed another position at the prestigious Dee Howard Company. And, while he was initially hired to work on aircraft, it wasn’t long before the master technician was put (completely) in charge of overseeing Mr. Howard’s extensive collection of classic cars. Managing a fully-equipped shop, Sonny and crew rebuilt and restored (often from the ground up) some true automotive treasures – among them a 1932 Duisenberg dual-cowl Phaeton that eventually sold for $1.2 million. He retired (again) from Dee Howard in 1990. Today, Sonny and Dixie live comfortably near Medina Lake. Besides the spacious house filled with countless trophies and framed awards (including the plaque that announces his recent induction into the Inliners International Hall of Fame), the property is equipped with a complete

automotive shop where Sonny spends his time doing what he loves most – building cars. Currently, he’s re-refurbishing his old 1923 Roadster from the ground up. “It will be a “beauty” and, as Sonny proudly states, “It will be fast!”

“Hiking is a great way to see and enjoy the outdoors,” said Karen Blizzard, who coordinates First Day Hikes in state parks, “and also a fun way for families to be together and stay fit.” We’re so lucky in Central Texas to have days of crazy nice weather during the winter months, so get on out there into a park and find yourself a hiking trail. I mentioned last month that I got my new little granddaughter a parks pass for Christmas. Well, the sweet park rangers at McKinney Falls tried and tried to figure out a way to sell me a parks pass with little Katie Sue’s name on it so anybody could take her to any state park, but, you know, the parks pass requires some ID, and she just doesn’t have any except our say-so. Pluswhich, she gets in free because she’s only 10 months old. So I had to give her Momma and Daddy parks passes in their names, and I want, want, want them to take her on a little jaunt in one of my favorite parks, Pedernales Falls. Little Katie Sue will be able to marvel at a duck pond, walk along a nature trail to a scenic overlook, and stop at a wheelchair and stroller friendly wildlife viewing station. And McKinney Falls is a great place for a family hike, too, with a three-mile paved hiking loop under the pecan trees along Onion Creek. One last thing. Blanco State Park will host a Buffalo Soldiers Outdoors Day February 9. Black soldiers in the U.S. Army’s Ninth Cavalry during the Indian wars in the mid to late 1800s were called
