T

wo things: Christmas in the parks and New Year’s Day hikes. It’s definitely the season in the Texas Hill Country. South Llano River State Park near Junction celebrates its 3rd Annual Christmas at the Ranch on Saturday, December 3. With the historic Walter Buck Jr. ranch home as the backdrop, the park will host several ranch-themed activities, and campers are encouraged to decorate their campsites. Christmas at the Ranch is from 1 pm to 4 pm with cowboy poetry, a horsecare demo, a visit from cowboy Santa, and lots of kid activities. And entrance fees are waived for day-use visitors. Info at 325-446-3994 or holly.platz@tpwd.texas.gov. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area celebrates Christmas at the Rock on Saturday, December 10, from 3 pm to 8 pm. It’s an afternoon with Santa Claus, his elves, cookies, cocoa, and hikes, including a Jingle Bell Hike to the summit at 9:30 am with you wearing your jingle bells and Santa hat. At 3 pm, Santa arrives and cookies, cocoa, and Santa photos will be happening at the newly remodeled head-

quarters building. At 5:30 pm you can join the rhyming ranger and the Grinch for Enchanted Rock’s annual rhyming Summit Trail hike and a reading of the Dr. Seuss favorite, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And you gotta wear your Grinch-wear for this one. Info at 830-6853636 or Scott.Whitener@tpwd.texas.gov. And this park tradition might be the granddaddy of them all – the 47th Annual LBJ Tree Lighting at Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site in Stonewall on Sunday, December 18, from 6 pm to 9 pm. This special tree-lighting gathering started by President and Mrs. Johnson will include carolers, a live nativity, Santa Claus, refreshments, and lots and lots of lights. And you can take a little trip to Christmas past with a visit to the SauerBeckmann Living History Farm. Info at 830-644-2252 or iris.neffendorf@tpwd. texas.gov. Here’s your chance to start the New Year off on the right foot – a First Day Hike, and we have a few of them in our Hill Country parks. Pedernales Falls State Park near Johnson City will host a First Day Fido

Take your best canine friend -- and maybe a human or two -- and head to Pedernales Falls for a 1.5 mile hike and some canine education activities. The park will partner with PAWS Shelter of Central Texas so you can borrow a dog to walk or maybe even add to your family. Bring a leash, water for you and your dog, and pet waste bags, and be sure to keep your own dog on a leash. Info at 830-868-7304, x235 or wendi.laws@tpwd.texas.gov. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area will feature a First Day Hike at 9:30 am —0.6 mile to the top, with a 425-foot elevation gain. Park rangers and Master Naturalists lead these regularly happening Summit Trail hikes, and you’ll hear about natural and cultural history of the park, some details about plants and wildlife, and legends of the big granite rock. So ask your questions on this rock hike, then enjoy the beautiful views as you reach the summit of Enchanted Rock. Bring your camera but not your dog –

dogs on a leash can walk the Loop Trail, but not the Summit Trail. Info at 830-6853636 or Scott.Whitener@tpwd.texas.gov. McKinney Falls State Park outside of Austin will have two First Day Hikes. Walk the Homestead Trail at 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 1, to give your New Year an outside start or take a guided night hike at 7 pm along the Rock Shelter Trail. At the 11 am Homestead Trail hike, learn about nature and the history of the McKinney Homestead and Gristmill ruins. This two-mile hike is a narrow dirt trail, so strollers and pets are not recommended. On the First Day Night Hike at 7 pm along the one-mile Rock Shelter Trail, hikers will stargaze, spider-sniff – right, that’s a real thing – and listen for nighttime wildlife. Info at 512-415-8793 or jenn.menge@tpwd.texas.gov. Lots happening this month with our families and friends, and wouldn’t it be fun to take a carload to a park and enjoy a little bit of whatever the Texas weather brings us that day. Happy Holidays – all of them during this bustling season.

EmilyAnn Theatre’s 19th Annual Trail of Lights

f all the wonderful shows and celebrations at the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens – the Butterfly Festival, children’s theatre, summer musicals and Shakespeare Under The Stars – the Trail of Lights still sparkles the brightest. “For many people, the first event they ever attend at EmilyAnn is the Trail of Lights,” says Ann Rolling, Executive Director. This year is the 19th year locals and out-of-towners alike will embrace the

Trail of Lights experience as a traditional part of their holiday festivities. With more than 100 exhibitors from businesses, churches, schools, civic organizations and families, as well as entertainers, food vendors and nightly Yule Log hosts, it seems as if almost everyone in town is involved in some fashion with this funfilled illuminated extravaganza. “The first trail of lights was in 1998,” says Ann, “and it started out very meager.” They were planning to have only the Christmas tree, with the idea that it

They had a lighting ceremony with about 200 people attending. “Over time we noticed that more and more people were making their way up to see the tree,” Ann says. The next year, besides the tree, there was only one exhibit, Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem, and this sen-

timental favorite is still among the many other exhibits now featured on the Trail of Lights. Although the main attraction is the eight acre walking trail through a glittering array of lighted displays – some religious in theme, others patriotic, whimsical, or simply storybook magical – the fun doesn’t stop at the end of the walking trail. Little ones can light their way through the park with their own lighted swords and tiaras, go for a ride on the Jingle Bell Express Train, or visit with jolly old Santa and perhaps a wandering princess or two (if Ariel, Snow White or Cinderella are out and about). And it’s always fun to pose for family pictures behind the character cutouts of the various exhibits. The Three Amigos display from Milagro’s Hill Country Tex Mex is a favorite of many visitors, but there are new exhibits every year. Judging for awards in a See TRAIL OF LIGHTS, page 5

For those who want to bask in the ambience of the season, there’s the lure of the Yule log, where you can enjoy complimentary cups of cocoa, toast marshmallows and enjoy a variety of entertaining performers from gospel singers, cloggers and folk dancers to bell choirs, school and church choirs. “We’re really excited this year be-

cause the Rotary Club and the Wimberley Village Library have built a permanent small library where every child can get a free book,” says Ann. Books are donated from the library and the Rotary Club, the Village Store and Half Price Bookstore in San Marcos. If visitors have any gently used children’s books they’re willing to donate for this library, they should bring them when they come to the Trail of Lights. Any donations will be appreciated. This season kicks off with a special opening ceremony at the top of the hill on November 26 at 4 pm, with Santa arriving on a firetruck an hour later at 5 pm. At dusk the Christmas tree will be officially lit by Sophia Pate, followed by the singing of O Holy Night by Bob and Carol Mark, accompanied by their grandchildren, the Collie Family. Beginning at 6 pm, there will be live entertainment by the gospel band, Divine Inspiration. Every effort has been made to make visiting the Trail of Lights easier for those with disabilities or limited mobility. Individuals who need assistance can ride on golf carts, chauffeured by volunteers, through the walking trails. Also, there are safety hand rails along the path to the top of the hill. FYI • The 19th Annual Trail of Lights at EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens takes place from November 26 through December 29. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 6 pm to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday from 6 pm to 10 pm. There is no admission cost, but donations are greatly appreciated. Additional parking is available at Wimberley High School. Thanks to the remarkable acoustics, it proved to be a huge hit. As Travis Wuest, the company’s marketing executive recalls, “With the natural reverb produced by the damp limestone walls, the harmonies achieved were amazing. Esthetically and emotionally, the audio results were just incredible.” By 2013, the decision was made to “totally do Christmas” throughout the entire park complex including revamping the charming “village” with its eateries and stores, the always baffling maze and even the challenging climbing and rapid descent zip line attractions.
