Heads or tails, you win!

Llano’s 34th annual Crawfish Open By ERNIE ALTGELT

F

eeling a bit rundown and looking to put a little “snap” back in your step? Or, maybe just tired of the same old things and “hungering” for something different? Would you like to “spice” things up a bit (or, a bite)? Well needful one, perhaps you should consider attending the, not to be missed, 2024 Llano Crawfish Open. Yep, participation at this annual crustacean creation (with a very worthy cause) is never a bad bet because, “heads or tails,” you win! Get clicking to get licking. Hosted each April for the past 33 years, the open is basically, all things crawfish! Boiled, steamed, stewed, you name it, these tasty mud bugs are lauded (and ladled) in all their bayou bounty. Imported fresh from East Texas by the ton, celebrated chefs from near and far elevate the lowly crawdads to gourmet greatness. And, that’s where you come in, ready to eat, eat, eat. But, there’s definitely so much more so, keep reading. For some background, the first “open” in 1989 initially grew from the charitable need of a motorized wheelchair for a local individual. Area residents wanted to hold a fund raiser but weren’t sure what to do. Enter the “Beaumont Connection.” Each year a group of visiting

6 Hill Country SUN

deer hunters from East Texas made Llano their base camp. When they heard that the town’s citizenry was looking for something “fun and different” to generate donations, these guys had just the thing – a traditional Cajun crawfish boil! Add to the mix a golf tourney (to attract those who weren’t quite sure about the little snappers) and an event was born. Folks came, consumed and contributed. All agreed it was a lot of fun but, more importantly, the imported crawfish ultimately netted the $400 needed for the purchase of the wheelchair. Realizing that there were so many other deserving charities, the Crawfish Board of Directors soon decided to make the Llano Crawfish Open an annual happening and, over the next three decades, that’s exactly what they did, again and again and again, raising thousands to help others. This month’s open marks the 34th annual iteration. Over the years, the number of participants – human and crawfish – has grown exponentially. Attendees are expected to number in the thousands and, to accommodate, hordes of crawdaddies have offered their services (and their savories as well, yum, yum!). See CRAWFISH OPEN, Page 8

The Beaumont Connection will be on hand to oversee the cuisine while local volunteers will run everything else including the two-day golf tournament to be held at the challenging Llano Golf Club, the various (and exciting) live auctions, the kid’s activities, the arts and crafts shopping fair, a multi-event rodeo (including team calf-roping, barrel racing and goat roping), a motorcycle run and, of course, the not-to-be-missed, top-shelf entertainment-fueled day concerts and nightly dances. This year’s performers, among other C/W heavy-weights, include the always popular Rodney Atkins, Matt Stell, The Kaiser Brothers and providing Zydeco music will be the Daywalkers from New Orleans and Joe Hall & the Louisiana Cane Cutters. With the majority of the activities taking place in the very comfy and commodious City Park facilities, located on the banks of the beautiful Llano River, all agree that the Llano Crawfish Open is truly a one-stop cavalcade of boiled bliss. So, grab your bibs, put on your dancing boots and sidle on over to Llano this April. It’s a sure bet for a great time because, heads or tails, you win! FYI • For information about the three-day event, including times, directions, ticket pricing, to register in the golf tournament, vendor participation, plus the motorcycle run and rodeo entry requirements, visit llanocrawfishopen.com. The fun primarily takes place on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20. Extended activities including the rodeo start on Thursday, April 18. All proceeds raised benefit area charities.

Wimberley WIC’s Annual

Pie Social April 27 WIMBERLEY H Come see what an old fashioned pie social is all about! It’s time for the Annual Pie Social at the Wimberley Valley Museum Saturday, April 27 from 11 am to 3 pm. You can’t go wrong with pie and hot dogs (in that order) —all to raise money for the Wimberley Valley Museum. Activities take place on the Museum grounds located between the Community Center and the Museum at 14068 Ranch Road 12. Everyone, get your best pies ready for the Pie Competition covering five categories. Judging will take place that morning for Fruit, Cream, Nut, Specialty and Kids’ Pies. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third places in each category. A Grand Prize for Best Pie will receive a special award and all winning pies will be auctioned. You can find a pie entry form at www.WimWic. org or at the Visitors Center. Pies submitted for judging need to arrive at the Community Center 8:30 am to 9:30 am that day. For more than 32 years, the Pie Social has been a highlight in Wimberley. Admission is free and all funds raised from selling slices of pies and hot dogs will go directly to the Museum. A pie eating Contest will also be a part of the day along with music provided by Marvin & Laura Bottera. If pie, hot dogs and music aren’t enough, other fun and games will be happening as well. The two houses that make up the Wimberley Valley Museum are the Winters-Wimberley House (built 1857) and the Wimberley-Hughes House (aka Zach House, built 1877). Located just down from the Community Center, both are listed on the Texas Register of Historic Places. It has taken a lot of work to restore and preserve both of these houses where Wimberley began. The governing body for the Museum is the Wimberley Institute of Cultures (WIC) which became a non-profit in 1987. The mission of WIC is to foster interest in the historical, architectural, natural and cultural resources of the Wimberley Valley through educational and social programs. Using the Museum, WIC helps educate the public about the history and prehistory of the Wimberley Valley area. Admission to the Museum is free; donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated. The Pie Social is just one more way WIC works to bring the community together in celebration of Wimberley. Like the Harvest Moon Dance in the fall, also a WIC organized function, WIC sponsors activities that make Wimberley fun while preserving the heritage of the Wimberley Valley. These two functions are the main fundraisers that help to keep the Museum up and running. Additional programs sponsored by WIC include local 4th grade class tours in the Spring and Wimberley senior class scholarships awarded in May each year. FYI • For more information, visit www.WimWic.org.

New name, continued support for Wimberley arts & community By BONNIE EISSLER

P

oets and painters, sculptors and textile artists, songwriters and musicians have called Wimberley home for years, drawn here by the area’s natural beauty and peaceful ambience, and inspired by a close-knit community of creative people. As a result, this gem of a small town has garnered a wide reputation as an artists’ haven, along with enthusiastic appreciation and support for the arts from Wimberley residents and thousands of tourists who visit each year. The Texas Commission of the Arts designated the town a Texas Cultural District in 2015, with Texas Film Friendly and Texas Music Friendly designations added in 2019 and 2022. “Applying for and getting those designations was a concerted effort to bring more attention to the wonderful artists community we have here,” says Deirdre Taylor, past president and director of communication for WimberleyArts.org. “The Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance (WimberleyArts. org) is a non-profit organization incorporated in 2014 to support arts and culture of all kinds – visual, performing, literary and culinary – with programs and events that nurture the Wimberley Valley area as a thriving cultural arts community and contribute to the economic vitality and quality of life here.” A brief overview of their sponsored events, programs and initiatives illustrates the broad support this organization provides

Progressive Texas country music pioneer Gary P. H Wimberley StoryFest celebrates “story in all its forms.” The most recent StoryFest event, held over three days last October at Pioneer Town during a partial eclipse was a rollicking success. Local storytellers, Texas and Americana musicians, art and cuisine all converged to celebrate the history and culture of the Hill Country. There was also a film about the night sky. H Bootiful Wimberley showcases more than 50 six-foot tall fiberglass cowboy boots artistically embellished by local artists, sponsored by local businesses. The Lions Club Boot and Kendra Scott Boot are close to completion and will be installed soon. H Public Arts Projects is an initiative to beautify Wimberley with murals and sculptures. A mural on the silo at Wimberley Historical Museum is in progress, a new boot on the horizon by artist Theresa Benson, and a silo mural at Oak Park for the City of Wimberley is in the planning stages. H The Wimberley Gallery Trail, a website resource, keeps track of all the places in the Wimberley Valley that display original art, including galleries, live music venues, shops, and restaurants. A city-wide celebration with music, food and drink set for Sunday, March 3, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Oak Park, is co-sponsored by Wimberley Arts and the city. The mayors of Wimberley and Woodcreek, Gina Fulkerson and Jeff Rasco, and David Webb, president of Wimberley Valley Dark Sky, will be at the event with three special announcements: expansion of the cultural district, an update about a new public art project, and exciting news related to the lovely dark skies over Wimberley. “In late 2023, the Texas Commission of the Arts approved expanding the boundaries of the cultural district to encompass the entire Wimberley area, from Savage’s Hill Country Bar to Jacob’s See WIMBERLEY ARTS, Page 13 The mural on the silo at Alexis Pointe Senior Living was the launch project for WimberleyArts.org’s Public Arts Program. Liberty Hill, TX Thirsty Mule Winery and Schitz Creek Distillery By COLLEEN BROOKS

I

f you ever thought it’d be nice to relax with your family while tasting local wines, spirits, and brews, consider a day trip to Liberty Hill, where Thirsty Mule Winery and Schitz Creek Distillery owner, Dan Marek, has created an inviting space to do just that. The winery and distillery, situated on eight acres with three acres of vineyards, offer a casual, country setting that can accommodate 200 guests outdoors and 80 on the interior. An experienced winemaker, Dan explains “I’ve been in the business for 17 years, but I’ve been making wine since I was a kid with my Dad.” He and his wife Becca opened Georgetown Winery more than 17 years ago as a start-up, and as the winery grew, they began creating more startups. The couple sold the Georgetown Winery in 2022 to put all their efforts into expanding Thirsty Mule Winery, which has grown exponentially. “We’re one of the only places right now that have a winery, distillery, and brewery - all on one property,” Dan explains. “Our guests can bring tastings back and forth between our tasting bars.” The Thirsty Mule Winery produces a wide variety of wines, aged to perfection and bottled in limited lots. THIRSTY MULE/SCHITZ CREEK, from Page 14 “We have whites, reds, sweet, and dessert wines - about 20 different varieties that guests can choose from,” Dan elaborates. “There are a lot of wineries in Texas, but they don’t craft everything on site. We are also a custom crush facility and make wines for 20 other wineries in the state of Texas. We produce about 50 percent of our wines from Texas fruit and the remainder is from California and Washington.” Thirsty Mule sweet wine selections include Sparkling Peach, Sparkling Muscadine, Sparkling Cranberry, Sweet Blush, Sweet White, Corky Mule and Sparkling Muscat. Their reds are big and

bold, from Cabernets to Malbecs, and the most popular white is Vermentino. Dessert wines include Cabernet Franc – Ice Wine, Portejas], and Sweet Dreams (a chocolate caramel port).“We also create a variety of spirits distilled from grains grown right here in Texas,” Dan says. Schitz Creek Distillery’s bourbon whiskey (made from 70% corn, 20% wheat, 5% barley & 5% rye) is aged in new white American oak barrels for a minimum of three years in the Texas heat. Their wheat whiskey —known for its smoothness— is aged for a full year. They also produce maple whiskey, made with their wheat whiskey then infused with real maple syrup. The Solera Whiskey — is limited to just 200 bottles produced each year—is aged for six years using the traditional Solera aging process. They also produce vodka, distilled from corn 16 times. Beer lovers will appreciate the selection of Schitz Creek’s Texas brews, including a Wheat, Bock, Hazy Ale, Stout, Pale Ale, Pilsner, Double Bock, Light Lager, and two IPAs, to name a few. A full line of mixed drinks made with Schitz Creek spirits and 10 craft beers on tap are available in the tasting bar. Snacks are also available for purchase and guests are welcome to bring food to enjoy (at outside seating area only). On Saturdays, fresh pizza from the brick oven pizza kitchen is available, along with live music. A food truck is on site on the weekends. The Thirsty Mule Winery and Schitz Creek Distillery are proudly veteran owned and give back to veterans. No reservations are required to visit, with the expection of Charters, which must call prior to arrival. Wine tasting options include a choice of four wines for $15 (including souvenir glass for $17). You must be seated at a indoor or outdoor table to be served tastings. Distillery tastings include choice of four liquors (or beers) for $12 ($15 with a souvenir glass). Annual Wine Club and Whiskey Club memberships, as well as mail order service are available. As far as the unique business names, Dan laughs, “We wanted to come up with something fun and comical, easy to remember. We have donkeys and goats onsite for the kids, so we’re pet friendly and kid friendly. We have a huge property for the whole family to spread out and enjoy.” Photos courtesy Thirsty Mule Winery and Schitz Creek Distillery. FYI • The Thirsty Mule Winery and Schitz Creek Distillery are located at 101 County Road 257 in Liberty Hill. Hours are Wednesday and Thursdays 11:30 am to 6 pm, Fridays and Saturdays 11 am to 7 pm, and Sundays noon to 5 pm. For information, call 512-778-5990 or visit www.thirstymule.com.

IN THE PATH OF THE TOTAL ECLIPSE The Hill Country will play center stage to a TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE Monday, April 8, 2024

Path of the Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024.

Data: NASA. Eclipse track: Fred Espenak. Courtesy Jay Anderson, Eclipsophile.com. All graphics with permission from the American Astronomical Society. https://eclipse.aas.org.

The 2024 eclipse path of totality will enter the U.S. and Texas at the southeastern-most tip of the Hill Country and make its way northeast, eventually departing up in the Piney Woods region of the state. While some eastern parts of Travis, Hays, Comal, and Bexar counties fall outside of the path, their county’s western areas will bear witness, as will all the

other counties of the Hill Country. At the centerline, observers will get almost four and a half minutes of totality. This is a once in a 375-year event, not to be missed! For details, visit the website at therealeclipse. com. And check out our Hill Country Calendar of Events (beginning on page 26) in this issue for plenty of eclipse-related fun!

Need-to-Know Safety Facts About Viewing an Eclipse A total solar eclipse is about as bright as the full Moon – and just as safe to look at. But the Sun at any other time is dangerously bright. View it only through special-purpose solar filters that comply with the transmission requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard for filters for direct viewing of the Sun. Looking directly at the Sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase (“totality”) of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon entirely blocks the Sun’s bright face, which happens only within the narrow path of totality. The only safe way to look directly at the Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are NOT SAFE FOR LOOKING AT THE SUN; they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight. 18 Hill Country SUN

Concan’s fabulous fest of femininity

WOMEN ON THE FRIO By ERNIE ALTGELT

T

he Western Hill Country around Concan has always beckoned with its beautiful Frio River surrounded by its ever-verdant landscape. Folks just like to visit. But come this April, the small community, while still welcoming to all, offers a special invitation just to the ladies with its annual Women on the Frio celebration – a girlsonly get together filled with excitement, entertainment, education and especially, mucho (not macho!) enjoyment. Yep, this truly is a fabulous fest of pure femininity. Sorry, guys! Women on the Frio is an unofficial outgrowth of an earlier, national undertaking called “Women Who Wander” that brought women together each year with the purpose of providing a weekend respite where all were encouraged through professionally-run seminars and enjoyable encounters with others to “take time for themselves” or, in other words, relax, reset and learn. Hundreds attended as the event grew over time and then came Covid, halting everything in 2020. Enter Women on the Frio, founded by past participants (all local ladies) intent on resurrecting, on a smaller scale, what the larger group had successfully done. And in 2021, the first WOTF weekend See WOMEN ON THE FRIO, Page 22

event was hosted by and held at the commodious and comfy Frio Country Resort in Concan. Its philosophy mirrored that of Women Who Wander but, with special adaptations appropriate for a delightful river setting in the Texas Hill Country. And, it was a hit attracting several hundred eager attendees. This year’s undertaking is on track to surpass that number. Up to 500 ladies can be accommodated, many renting cabins at the resort, all ready to mix, mingle and amass while exploring and enhancing their abilities by participating in a planned set of fun and fruitful activities while, of greater importance, simply taking a much-needed break from the normal (job, parenting and relationship) stresses found in their day-to-day lives. Really, it’s a lot of “me time” enriched with lots of like-minded comradery made more fun through inclusion in various and diverse group activities. Sounds a lot like a two-day summer camp! With the gals arriving at the resort on Friday, April 26, after a complementary beverage, brief orientation and a little settling in, day-one culminates with a private riverfront concert from the accomplished Nashville C/W singer/songwriter Kaitlin Butts. Not a bad start. Saturday however promises to be a very full day. Each lady can pick and choose her individual activities that can range from a little physicality in the form of Pilates and yoga classes, rockwall climbing, axe throwing, eurobungy, archery and, even trying out a ride on the mechanical bull to more sedate diversions including painting, See WOMEN ON THE FRIO, Page 24

WOMEN ON THE FRIO, from Page 22 jewelry making, succulent potting and attending planned seminars and lectures. Really, with so much to do, everyone’s schedule can be customized to fit personal tastes and abilities. And, if an attendee just wants to “chill” and watch (or nap), so be it. Naturally, during and in between everything, all are invited to take a dip in and/or picnic along the stunning banks of the Frio. Splish-splash! Lastly, what contributes to the cheerful ambiance is the Frio Country Resort itself. Situated on 32 river-bounded, tree-shaded acres and boasting 47 cozy and rentable cabins and 14 RV sites, uptimes and down-times are guaranteed to be great. Also, attendees can bring their own eats and drinks to the event but the resort will have on-site food trucks so, purchasing chow and beverages won’t be a problem either. Now, how’s that ladies? Photos courtesy Frio Country Resort. FYI • The Women on the Frio event is Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. Cost per person is $145, excluding food and lodging. For the painting, jewelry and potting classes, an additional fee of $35 each is assessed. All attendees must be at least 21-years-old.
