painting and a hay bale maze which will test any kiddos’ sense of direction. Story tellers, enlightening orchard tours, a game area and cider making also provide additional, age appropriate diversion. Of special note, each year the children love joining the “Great Hill Country Symphony” where one and all are given kazoos, triangles, whistles, shakers, washboards (and encouragement to vocalize) as the group executes a medley of popular songs and ditties. Parents are invited to sing along, too. The afternoon will provide some fun contests like apple eating (no charge to enter), pig races, and a miniature tractor pull; pulling pumpkins of course!. With so much going on, visitors will want to make a day of it – so dress casually. Between the activities, plenty of reasonably-priced food and beverages to enjoy will be offered, including lots of apple (and pumpkin) pie, apple ice cream and fresh squeezed apple cider. Personal picnic baskets and lawn chairs are welcome. And, while the little ones are exploring, mom and dad can amble across the grounds and pick up some fall decorations for the homestead. A large variety of the pumpkins, squashes and other gourds on display along with corn stalks, hay bales and apples will be available for purchase. So, make October a Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch month. FYI • The event is located at 13558 Highway 16 North in Medina. Grounds are open to the general public each Saturday through Monday from 10 am to 4 pm weekly. Scheduled school tours are welcomed on Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is $6 per person (no charge for babes in arms) and includes hay rides, petting zoo, orchard tours, pumpkin painting (you buy the pumpkin, the paints are free) and other entertainments. There are additional charges for pony rides, face painting, barrel train ride, and sand art creation. Parking is free. For information about the Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch visit the web site at www.lovecreekorhards.com or call 830-589-2202. Special arrangements are also available for private (covered) birthday parties accommodating up to 50 guests. For party details or to schedule a school tour, please call 210-215-1995.

Time to take the Texas State Parks Geocache Challenge
N
ow this is some going-to-a-statepark weather – cool mornings, sunny afternoons, blue skies, some now-and-again rain showers, and lots of birds, blossoms, bugs. Time to get ourselves out there “in among ’em,” as my grandma Eunice used to say. Some of our Texas Hill Country parks have what I still think of as an unusual activity to get families and kids – young and
old – out in the parks. Geocaching – a hunt for hidden “treasures,” or caches, using online, GPS, and smart phone technology. It’s an old-fashioned treasure hunt with a modern twist. More than 90 of Texas’ state parks have hidden, prize-filled containers for visitors who want to geocache, and many parks are offering Geocache 101 workshops – including our own Inks Lake State Park,

Geocaching for family fun. Photo by Chase A. Fountain, Texas Parks and Wildlife Lockhart State Park, Guadalupe River State Park, and Government Canyon State Natural Area. “There’s been an 82 percent increase in the number of geocaches in our state parks in the past three years,” says Robert Owen, Texas State Parks outdoor education specialist. Geocaching is family-friendly and more accessible than ever thanks to new Smartphone technology. You no longer have to have a GPS device to find the cache locations.” Geocaching is huge worldwide, with more than 3 million items hidden by people around the globe, and it is supported by online communities, including geocaching.com. Participants find coordinates, share photos and tips, and learn all the particulars about the activity. After finding the latitude and longitude of a hidden cache, geocachers are guided to within 12 feet of its location. Then, geocachers search the surrounding terrain until they locate the “goodies” in a container that might be as small as a film canister or as large as an ammo box. These treasures are never buried, so no shovel is needed. Last year, nearly 11,000 geocache “finds” occurred in Texas state parks, with hundreds of kids finding prizes while learning interesting facts and stories about Texas history, conservation and stewardship of Texas State Parks. And the Texas State Parks Geocache Challenge continues. For more information and to find coordinates of prize-filled caches in Texas State Parks, visit texasstateparks.org/geocache. If you want to attend a Geocache 101 workshop at Inks Lake on October 5 or October 19, get in touch with Sean Jones
at sean.jones@tpwd.texas.gov or 512-7932223 or 512-793-4689. The workshops are 11 am to 1 pm at the back porch of the park store. Once the basics are covered, class members will do some nearby hiking to practice their new skills. Bring your own GPS units or use some that are available at the park. The workshop is $3 per person. You’ll be hiking around and finding several practice geocaches so be prepared to hike a short ways. Meet at back porch of park store. Program costs $3 per person. Geocaching will be a featured activity at Texas Outdoor Family workshops at Government Canyon State Natural Area on October 19-20. Texas Outdoor Family camping workshops get your family outdoors with all the gear needed for a twoday outdoor camping trip. More info at tofsp@tpwd.state.tx.us or 512-389-8903. Cost is $65 for up to six family members. Besides geocaching, the Government Canyon camping workshop will also feature special lessons on the Edwards Aquifer, listening and learning about night sounds, a little Art in the Parks activity, and morning coffee with a park ranger. And of course you can count on good lessons on building a base camp and doing some outdoor cooking. If you want to check out another Texas Outdoor Family workshop, Inks Lake State Park will host a workshop November 1-3 and McKinney Falls State Park will host a workshop December 7-8. Information is available at tofsp@tpwd.state.tx.us or 512-389-8903. Go on now, y’all – listen to my Texas Hill Country grandma and get out in among ’em.

Lots to learn at rainwater fest BOERNE H From the seven hills of ancient Rome to today’s Texas Hill Country, rainwater collection has spanned the globe and the ages. To celebrate this timeless conservation practice, rainwater collection professionals and enthusiasts converge in Boerne on Saturday, November 2, for the 4th annual Rainwater Revival, open to the public and free to attend. The festive day will be filled with informative and entertaining presentations by professionals and users of rainwater, water conservation-related business vendor booths, rainwater system displays, and plenty of experts to provide guidance and services; as well as food booths, shopping, live music and much more. Rainwater Revival supports the mission to spread the good word about rainwater harvesting and water conservation, the importance of which grows with our ever increasing population. In addition to a roster of speakers providing an experienced crosssection of rainwater collection knowledge, the Rainwater Revival will feature a collection of 55-gallon recycled rain barrels transformed into works of art by Hill Country artists. The barrels will be displayed around Kendall County during the weeks leading up to the Rainwater Revival and then auctioned off at the event. FYI • The 4th Annual Rainwater Revival is November 2 at the Boerne Convention and Community Center from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is free. Sculpture Ranch, grand gallery of the outdoors
S
By Ernie Altgelt
even miles west of Johnson City, on a sprawling 143 acres, is an astonishing artistic enclave. Here, incredible and substantial examples of man’s conceptual imagination coexist almost magically within the natural splendor that is the Texas Hill Country. Appropriately named the Sculpture Ranch, (the first art venue by this name), this grand gallery of the great outdoors plays host—not only to a stunning cavalcade of contemporary three-dimensional creations dramatically displayed across its native landscape—but also to thousands of annual visitors seeking wonderment and inspiration from this freelyshared collection. To the appreciative, because of all that it comprises, the Sculpture Ranch is considered nothing less than a masterful work of art in its own right. The ranch is the project of internationally renowned painter, Benini, and his wife, Lorraine, both of whom have spent the last 36 years living and working in the fine arts. Benini’s artistic career began in his home country of Italy. In 1962, at age 21, he held his first one-man exhibition in Milano to rave reviews. Since that public introduction five decades ago, Benini’s paintings have been in 162 one-man shows, primarily in public venues—universities, museums and arts centers—across the globe, creating an impressive inventory of acclaimed and constantly evolving work rendered in various media. Lorraine has fulfilled the role of muse, business manager and curator. After a lifetime of travel, the nomadic pair, desiring privacy and, according to Lorraine, “the ideal workspace” sought something new. Enter the Texas Hill Country. During a visit, the couple was struck by the area’s resemblance to the Medi-

The Beninis moved on-site into an existing stone and cedar home while starting renovation of a hangar on what would eventually become their 12,000-square-foot combination gallery, offices, art library and studio. During this time, the first outdoor sculptures were installed – large Beniniowned pieces by Icelandic artist Johann Eyfells, Willow City’s Marshall Cunningham, M.D, and others. Word quickly spread throughout the art community about this “exciting new venue.” According to Lorraine, “Soon, artists from near and far were sending images with requests to exhibit on the ranch.” Based on personal criteria, many addiSee SCULPTURE RANCH, page 9

tional pieces were eventually accepted, resulting in what has become today’s amazing “Sculpture Ranch.” The admiring crowds weren’t far behind. Currently, the acreage boasts an astonishing 90-plus soaring sculptures aesthetically arranged across the otherwise undisturbed natural environment. Many exceed 10 feet in height; styles, shapes and themes vary greatly. Each contributing artist—35 are represented— personally selected his or her installation location on the ranch. An expert was consulted to develop a route and oversee construction of a drivable and/or walkable mile-long “trail” that winds its way from sculpture to sculpture. The result is breathtaking and,
perhaps most remarkably for those wishing to experience the same, “Free to one and all.” The ranch is now open to visitors the first weekend of the month. As Lorraine states, “At the beginning, hundreds were arriving each month. The numbers grew fast. We wanted to share but, logistically, it eventually became too much.” With Benini’s work schedule, combined with his ongoing public exhibitions, a decision was made to curtail visitations to certain days of the month. Beyond the outdoor installations, guests are welcome to tour the huge gallery, where a chronological selection of Benini’s paintings are on display, as

St. Stephens School hosts costumed run October 26
WIMBERLEY H Run, jog, walk or stroll – all are welcome! St. Stephen’s Episcopal School will host its 9th annual Halloween themed benefit fun run at 8 am Saturday, October 26. Register today, start moving and get to work on those costumes. A priority of St. Stephen’s School is to educate its students physically, as well as intellectually and spiritually. In celebration of this priority, the School will host a Halloween themed 5K trail run, and 1K kiddie run, on the beautiful 52-acre Hill Country campus it shares with the Church. This chip-timed event features a Halloween costume contest for participants of all ages. “This trail event is for all ages and ability levels,” says event co-chair Kyle Fox. “It is a credible, chip-timed trail event for those more seasoned runners, but is a beautiful course and fun day for all—no matter your age or experience.” There will be awards and prizes for multiple race and costume categories. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. FYI • As an independent school, St. Stephen’s receives no state funding and so seeks the support of the communities it serves in order to help meet the costs of providing an exceptional education. In this spirit, business sponsorships are available for the event. If you are interested in supporting St. Stephen’s School, and promoting your area business through this event, contact Kyle Fox at kylef1969@gmail.com. Or simply register to participate in the event at www. ststeveschool.org. Thank you to Seton Medical Center Hays who has already signed on as the title “gHost” Sponsor and to Austin’s Rogue Running who has signed on as the event’s Official Running Store Partner. For more information, contact Marsha Acock at marsha.acock@ststeveschool.org or at 512.847.9857.
