LILLI PELL, from page 8 Another top pick for the artist is The Crossing, a 30 x 40 inch oil painting of longhorns grazing by a river, that now hangs in the permanent collection of Wimberley Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. Some of Lilli’s most delightful paintings are of farm animals, often sheep or goats. Whether the subject is a drowsy angora goat enjoying the wind on his face, or a pair of hungry goats eating up the garden, these works of art engage the viewer with their warmth and whimsy. Four of Lilli’s paintings that depict Texas landscapes (Bluebonnet Road, West Texas Yucca, Desert in Spring, and Blanco River Morning) are on display as a group in the public waiting room for patients at The Intrepid Spirit Center at Fort Hood, Texas. The Center opened in 2015 for the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a result of combat injury. “The Intrepid Spirit Center does such important work and I was honored to be commissioned to do the paintings,” Lilli says. Lilli has been teaching art classes, beginners to advanced, for sixteen years, saying “it’s fun to watch them become artists.” Many of her students are teachers or in the medical profession (nursing, psychologist, physical therapy), although there are some who are already professional artists or working toward that goal. Most of Lilli’s students take the classes for the enjoyment and therapeutic value – art is good therapy! Lilli has several nearly completed works in progress for her galleries
— a cat, an early morning landscape, and a Hill Country scene near Devil’s Backbone. She has commissions for some large landscapes and a portrait, and there are plans for her to be associated with Gallery Prudencia, a beautiful new art gallery in San Antonio. For more information about Lilli Pell’s art, classes and workshops, call 512-913-3270 or visit lillipell.com. You can see (and purchase) Lilli’s original paintings in Wimberley at Pitzer’s Fine Art at 13909 Ranch Road 12. “The Crossing” is on permanent display at the Wimberley Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.

Realizing the dream
Jobell Cafe & Bistro by Ernie Altgelt
W
hile the Wimberley of old is still wonderfully intact, with the influx of new folks moving into the area, even the long-term locals have gotten excited by some of the surprises that have been introduced and happily incorporated into the fabric of the town. For many, the feeling might be something like, “What was is good but, so too are the recent changes!” Really, it’s all been a wonderful “win/win” for native and newbie alike and, nowhere is this more in evidence than with the addition of Jobell Café & Bistro – a warm and welcoming eatery serving up a “taste” of sophistication without the uppity pretense. Opened in 2014 by an intrepid, married couple seeking solace from the big city (namely New York), Jobell represents a long, jointly-held dream brought finally to fruition. Founders, and visionaries, Jessenia and David Bober first met in Manhattan where he worked as a remodeling contractor and she (originally from Dallas), as an aspiring actress. Neither had any direct restaurant management and/or development experience but both had been raised in households where “food was never taken for granted.” David’s mother was a respected writer of culinary history. Jess’s family represents a bicultural collaboration – Chinese and Cuban – where experimentation and blending promoted some very interesting, eclectic household flavors. Together, these admitted See JOBELL, page 11

“foodies” had been nurturing the idea of having their “own place” almost since exchanging vows and now, after moving to Wimberley, it finally happened. With the birth of their children (the restaurant is named for them – Josh and Isabella), the desire to relocate from the East Coast grew. David’s brother had been living in Austin and, it was during a visit that the pair discovered Wimberley and, as they both agree, “We were charmed.” Soon a house was purchased followed by the acquisition of a vacant commercial property (a former café) a few miles west of the town square. According to Jess, “It was like magic. Everything seemed to be falling into place. We had a new home and our dream of owning our own restaurant was becoming real.” And, real it is. the structure (handled entirely by David), the Bobers have been cooking, creating, testing, tasting and ultimately, sharing the results with Wimberley’s very receptive dining community who, in turn, have responded with rave reviews! But, just what is the Jobell Café &Bistro? Well for starters, how about some exceptional smoked fish dip? Or, some crispy Thai chili Brussels sprouts? Does that give you an idea? Follow the openers with entrees that include jerk shrimp and pineapple skewers, venison shepherd’s pie, ginger soy salmon and, for traditionalists, a cornbread-stuffed pork chop. Yum! Delicious soups, salads and desserts abound as well. And, since this is a bistro, great wines and beer are offered in abundance too. Freshness is paramount and, the majority of the foods are locally sourced. Everything is made on site “from scratch” and is affordably priced. When considered, it really is the perfect recipe of melding hearty Hill Country appetites with a little New York internationalism and, based on the repeat business enjoyed, it’s a hit. And obviously, while it’s the food that makes a restaurant, at Jobell, the digs aren’t bad either. Situated just outside of the town proper, on a park-like acre of land filled with trees and water features, the structure itself beckons visitors to “come on in and have a seat” within its cozy, comfortable interior. Everything is planned to enhance the dining experience throughout its intimate, inviting, art-filled interior and then out onto the well-appointed deck. In or out, diners won’t feel crowded and the atmosphere is calm and relaxing allowing for an undistracted focus on the food, which is how it should be. So, if you’re already in Wimberley or, planning a visit soon, make sure Jobell Cafe & Bistro is on your “must-do” list. It’s a rare find for a small town and, you won’t be disappointed. Just keep thinking about a little culinary sophistication without the unwanted pretense. You’ll be glad you did and, you will be back! Photos courtesy Jobell Cafe & Bistro.

boot whisperer Ulli Johnston I
by Bonnie Eissler
t’s hard to find boots that fit just right. And as improbable as it sounds, surveys and clinical observations suggest that as many as 85 percent of us are walking around in footwear that’s either too long, short, wide or narrow. Old western photographs, chaps, cowbells, leather purses, hats and even a buffalo head on the floor add to the ambience, but the main attractions at the Wild West Store are vintage cowboy boots and the store’s vivacious owner, Ulli Johnston, also known as the Boot Whisperer for her mysterious ability to find perfectly fitting boots for her customers just by looking at their feet. “I never ask for the shoe size. Most people don’t know their right shoe size,” Ulli says. So instead of asking them this question, or even measuring their feet, she simply says, “take off your shoes and stand in front of me.” As every true Texan knows, there’s nothing quite like a good pair of boots. Even though Kansas stakes Ulli Johnston, the Boot Whisperer, with Jimmy Buffett. Courtesy Ulli Johnson. the claim as birthplace of the cowboy boot, Texas is renowned for having more custom boot makers and more boot wearers than anywhere else in the United States. companies, like Justin and Lucchese, have been in operation Born and raised in Germany, more than 5,000 miles from since the 19th century and designs were often trade secrets. the cowboy culture of Texas, Ulli recalls a cobbler shop near Even within the same company, sizes aren’t consistent for where her family lived. “It was small and dark and one of my every style. Also, the myriad variations of the human foot favorite places,” she says, “I liked the smell of the leather and make finding the right fit even more difficult. watching the shoemaker repair the shoes.” According to the sign outside, the store has more than 500 Ulli has been sharing her love for vintage cowboy boots pairs of boots, but two rooms have been added since that sign with customers since 1993, and it was in 2006 that she was was painted. Ulli estimates there are now more than 700 pairs given a new name by a woman who couldn’t believe her luck of boots in the store. when Ulli brought her some boots that got everything right. Where do all these boots come from? It seems implausible “Oh my...” she said, “I didn’t tell you anything, and these are that so many people part with never or rarely worn boots. They exactly what I want — you are a boot whisperer.” From then have different reasons, but the main reason people sell or trade on, Ulli says, “the name just took off.” them in is that they never fit properly in the first place. Time after time, Ulli has transformed skeptics into Ulli only buys boots that are in mint condition. A quick believers. “She has a gift,” they’ll say, or “She didn’t even glance at their soles confirms this. They’re all original and measure my feet – how did she know?” look brand new or almost new. Top quality materials and Ulli doesn’t claim 100 percent accuracy (more like 80 workmanship set them apart. Prices range from around $250 percent), still impressive when you consider that many up to thousands of dollars. The most expensive pair in the store on the day I visited were custom handmade alligator Lucchese boots priced at $12,000. It was in the late 1980s and ’90s that mass production, often overseas, started to take over the industry. “Computers do all of the elaborate stitching that was once done by hand,” Ulli says, “but real boot lovers want the real deal.” A visit to the Wild West Store isn’t just about buying boots. People come for the experience. “There’s no hard sales pitch,” Ulli says. “I want people to have a good time and leave happy.” She tells about a recent bachelorette party of about 15 young women who visited the store. A limousine pulled up and they all piled out, “everyone got boot whispered and they had a blast.” Ulli recalls one famous customer, Jimmy Buffett, best

known to his “parrothead” fans for songs that portray an island escapism lifestyle. Members of his band had been patronizing Wild West for years. When someone asked, “What about Jimmy?” the response was a dismissive, “Nah, he only wears flip-flops.” It was quite a surprise when he came to the store soon after that, got the boot
whisperer treatment and boots that fit him just right (of course they did!). One pair was chocolate brown and the other was sand colored, from the 1950s or ’60s,” Ulli says, “and he bought them both.” Now the time had arrived for me to take off my shoes and stand before the boot whisperer. from the “Margaritaville” singer-songwriter, a bevy of bachelorettes, and many others, I still harbored secret doubts that Ulli could conjure up my dream boots. I dreaded having to tell her that the magic wasn’t working this time. To my astonishment, in mere seconds, she clapped her hands together and said confidently, “I already know.” She disappeared into another room and came back in a flash holding up a pair of short black boots. I put them on, walked around the room, and they were so comfortable I didn’t want to take them off. Boom! Double fist bump. I’d been boot whispered. In that moment, I realized something. These pointytoed simple black (not shiny) leather boots with very subtle hand stitching were absolutely perfect. Even though I hadn’t
given Ulli a price range (usually the customer tells her what he wants to spend), the ones she’d selected were within five dollars of the price I had in mind. She assured me that finding the right boot doesn’t always happen this quickly, that sometimes it takes several tries, that she doesn’t get it exactly right all the time. “That would be too freaky,” she says. I didn’t buy the boots that day, but I can’t stop thinking about them and I know I’ll be returning to the Wild West Store very soon. If it’s meant to be,” Ulli said, “they’ll be here waiting for you.” The Wild West Store is at 13709 Ranch Road 12, just off the Square. Open by appointment only, please call 512-293-4890 to schedule. masterful metal artistry of
Tim Moore

W
e generally think of our ministers in terms of their tending to a congregation’s spiritual needs. It’s obviously an important role that requires a depth of understanding, empathy and faith often coupled with an intuitive ability to “see” past an individual’s exterior and into the awaiting possibilities that may lie within. And then, after recognizing an internal potential, being able to offer the encouragement and guidance that can ultimately lead to amazing, positive transformations. The results can be quite inspiring. For Wimberley’s Tim Moore, beloved head minister of the town’s Church of Christ, those traits not only manifest themselves while functioning as a respected religious leader but, surprisingly to some, in a more secular way, as well. For the past 26 years, this tall, lean and laid-back Wichita Falls native has balanced his devotion for his “higher calling” with an equally intense passion for handfashioning wondrous works wrought in steel, gold and silver. And, in comparison with Tim’s “day job” his production of exquisite, highly coveted, finished items that initially were no more than unadorned, blank pieces of metal really can be considered a transformative spiritual process, as well. Add into the equation that most of this gifted man’s constructions reflect his “horseman” upbringing and, one just might say that this good shepherd truly has been “spurred” into action. Amen, Brother Tim! Yep, Tim has built quite a following outside of his appreciative house of worship thanks to his exceptional aptitude in working metal.

TIM MOORE, from page 22
The intricately wrought and beautiful, yet functional works — bits, buckle badges and spurs — of master metalsmith Tim Moore. Photos courtesy Moore Bits of Silver.
And, as a matter of fact, generally his output really is “working metal” meaning that most of what he crafts is not only intricately beautiful but, fancily functional as well. Belt buckles, horse bits, saddle hardware, law enforcement badges and, you guessed it, especially spurs, have become this modest minister’s hallmark. Since 1996, Tim— through his one-man company, Moore Bits of Silver — has been designing and engraving, stamping, soldering, cutting, polishing and more, all to satisfy a growing market for his incredible custom creations. The metal aspect of his life began in high school where he first learned how to weld. He began fabricating different things — often horse-related hardware that, while being very usable, esthetically reflected more of the barn or tack house than the art gallery.
But, since he was always a “doodler,” and could render almost any image two-dimensionally, it wasn’t long before higher aspirations in decorativeness followed. As Tim recalls, “Early on, I’d been learning by trial and error. When I initially started trying to engrave on and mount silver to my work, I quickly realized that I needed some additional training.” To that end, Tim signed on as an eager (and apt) student with Wyoming’s respected master spur and bit maker, Jeremiah Watt, to learn the essential techniques and intricacies that would ultimately move his creations to the next level. And, based on the unsurpassed quality and beauty of his current output, that’s exactly what happened – in spades! Today, out of his small, non-descript, equipment-filled workshop adjacent to his well-kept Wimberley home, Tim (after his congregational obligations are completed), expertly designs and fabricates an incredible array of gleaming, usually Western-themed items that, quite frankly, seem the work of a big city, artisan of the highest caliber and not that of a small-town preacher but, that’s exactly what is happening and, it’s wonderful indeed. Folks in the know, have been flocking to the agreeable pastor with requests for, as he relates, “Almost anything and everything that can be made using precious metals, gems, ivories and other natural materials then further embellished through hand engraving and etching.” The results are unanimously stunning. Visit Tim’s website at www.mooresbitsofsilver.com for visual proof. Almost all of his work is for custom orders which can be placed online but, if you’re in town and “spurred” to see more of his handiwork, give him a call at 512-847-5489 and schedule a visit at his workshop. This transformative artist would be glad to see you.

Barbara Latimer, Broker/Branch Manager Hills of Texas / Sky Realty Broker/Owner at Hills of Texas Realty, Barbara merged her company with Sky Realty in 2015 to form Hills of Texas Sky Realty. Her 20+ years’ experience and knowledge of the market provides the highest level of service for her clients. “It’s work I love. There is nothing else I’d rather do, she says. “There are challenges to working in a rural market, but I thrive on those challenges. Every property is unique and interesting. I love problem solving and helping my clients.” Well, septic and Oak wilt inspections are typical occurrences for Barbara, but to urban agents they can be foreign. A local market expert and a Texas Monthly magazine “Five Star Real Estate Agent” for the last 8 years, it is obvious Barbara loves her career and is eager to help buyers and sellers. Her clients definitely count on her expertise, but they also love her approach. She’s the whole package and say things like, “We interviewed several agents, but we wanted someone we could connect with,” says one client. “Barbara walked in the door, and her enthusiasm and attention to detail won us over. She’s definitely the reason we were able to finalize the sale.” Originally from Houston and a graduate of the University of Texas, Barbara and her family moved to Wimberley in 1997. In her free time, she and her husband, Gaylan, enjoy boating, live music venues and exploring the Hill Country.
