hester John and Elissa BeachJohn, both retired now from programming careers at IBM, share a mutual passion for glass art. When they met seven years ago on New Year’s Eve, “I discovered that Chester had an even bigger collection of glass than I did,” Elissa says. In 2014, Chester and Elissa moved to Wimberley and bought the old Silo Antique and Feed store, located five miles from town on the road to San Marcos. They had plans for the original silo structure, which has been a landmark in Wimberley since it was built in 1985, but an adjacent rectangular building was torn down to make way for their new studio. The results are stunning. Silo Gallery is the largest warm glass studio in Central Texas (4,000 sq.ft.), with a grand entrance featuring a large koi pond and a grotto with two waterfalls. The colorful Mondrian-inspired facade is a tantalizing invitation to see what treasures lie behind the door. Elissa always enjoyed crafts and she did some beading before she started exploring the world of fused glass art. She originally thought she wanted to work with metal, but after taking a class, quickly realized that this wasn’t something she enjoyed. “Then I

took a class working with glass and I loved it from the beginning,” she says, “you couldn’t get me out of the studio.” She likes how “forgiving” glass is, and the pleasant surprises that can emerge from the kiln, but her favorite aspect of glass art is the the way the glass catches and reflects light. Whether back lit, front, top or bottom, the change in the light of the day makes changes to the art. Debby Gibson, whose beautiful glass art is displayed and available to purchase at the gallery, says, “This studio was specifically designed as a fused glass studio and it has everything that a glass artist needs.” There’s a huge amount of specialized equipment – band saws, lapidary wheel, glass lathe, water-fed drill press, cutter, grinders, molds and a large room full of different kinds of kilns. “We have names for the kilns,” Debby says, “these two are Tom and Jerry, and over there are Mama Bear and Baby Bear.” “We designed and built the studio from the ground up,” Elissa says, “Chester wanted fans in the kiln room that would turn on and pull heat out of the room if the temperature got above 90 degrees.” Keeping the temperature at the right level is a crucial part of the process. A “computerized brain” sets the firing schedule for one of the kilns, adjusting the temperature as needed. Fused glass, joining together pieces of glass at a high temperature, is a relatively new art form, less than 50 years old. Sounds simple enough, but there are myriad variations on the basic theme and pieces with a lot of layers and colors require multiple firings in the kiln. Fusing at different temperatures produces strikingly different results. The gallery features more than two dozen very talented artists specializing in 3D art forms, including bronze, wood, pottery and warm glass such as fused, draped, slumped, cast and mixed media. Silo Gallery offers a number of fused glass classes. Beginners make a nightlight, suncatcher, picture frame, or coaster. Those who complete the Fusing 101 can take more advanced classes and rent studio space for only $6 an hour. Photos courtesy Silo Gallery. Silo Gallery is located at 7990 Ranch Road 12, just outside of Wimberley near the Junction. Beginner, project, Fusing 101 and advanced classes are available weekdays and weekends. Call 512-444-6494 or visit the website at siloglass.com for information about the artists whose works are showcased in the gallery and to learn more about upcoming classes.

Creekside Cookers W BY ERNIE ALTGELT
imberley is definitely a community of appetites. With its extensive shopping opportunities, pristine rivers to float and fish, miles of scenic beauty ripe for hiking and birding or simply, hanging out and soaking in the small town ambiance, this little patch of Hill Country heaven can satisfy almost any pleasurable yen and that of course, can all be hungry work! Fortunately for visitors and locals alike, after (or during) a full day of adventuring, sating one’s need for nutrition – in true Wimberley fashion, albeit Texas-style – is as easy as pulling into the newly opened, and very welcoming, Creekside Cookers BBQ & Steakouse restaurant. Now conveniently (and permanently) located on verdant River Road a short hop from the square, this smoking outfit is truly the real deal and, as a result, oozes with the sweet smell of success. And currently, as the only barbecue eatery in the burg (there were others in the past), it’s really nice that it’s also one of the best. Yep, Creekside Cookers has brought BBQ back to Wimberley and we can’t get enough of it. Yum, yum! In actuality, Creekside’s humble beginnings can be traced back a decade or so to a towable food trailer that served its delicious (then as now) fare from various area locations and, during irregular hours. But, as founder and acclaimed, competitively-recognized, award winning pit master, Kelly Evers (a local boy) recalls, “Without my own “rock and mortar” place, I was severely limited in what I could or wanted to do BBQ-wise.” For most of his adult life, Kelly was also a fulltime middle school instructor which kept him away from the pit. But after retirement from teaching and fired with a deep desire to make a professional shift, his solution was to refurbish a former restaurant site, bring on a talented cadre of co-workers, add multiple high-grade offset smokers (filling them with only the finest in meats) and then, open for business. In October of last year, that’s exactly what he did and the response since has been well, “just delicious.” Today, a visit to Creekside Cookers BBQ will almost immediately get one’s juices flowing. The aroma, the hearty plates being

BBQ & Steakhouse
contentedly consumed by fellow patrons and/or a perusal of the menu’s tempting offerings all contribute to an exciting expectancy of “what’s to come.” There are no unhappy faces within Creekside Cookers because the entire operation “meats” all expectations. Twelve-hour oak and pecan Smoked brisket, sausage, pulled pork, turkey and chicken all call Creekside home. These are the heroes (although, the human element, like Kelly, certainly contribute as well). Seasoned with Kelly’s special rubs before cooking, the slow-cooked meats beg to be eaten, with a homemade savory sauce or without – your choice. Adding to the mix are traditionally-grilled, exceptional “prime” beef steaks for those wishing a non-pit approach to unmatched flavor. And, of course, there are a number of superlative supporting sides like the amazing spiced-just-right beans, the essential German dill potato salad, the incredible creamed corn and even more. The prepared-at-Creekside desserts are to die for, too, and change depending on the season, so you’ll need to ask your smiling server for details on what’s currently available. Lastly, a full bar vending a variety of liquidity rounds out the offerings. Yum again! And, although Creekside’s new digs aren’t the primary reason for coming, they’re pretty nice, too. A large portion of the restaurant is housed in a late-1800s farmhouse with the remainder overflowing into comfortable dining rooms and shady porches. Outside, there’s plenty of space for chowing down while watching the kiddos play and, on weekends, live music is often on tap. And thankfully, there’s tons of free “right there” parking so a long, post consumption walk isn’t required. The entire grounds can be booked for private events as well and catering, whether on- and off-site, is available too. In closing, as Kelly requests, “Please stop by for a taste and let me know what you think because ‘feedback’ is almost as important as just plain ‘feeding’ is to me and my Creekside Cookers BBQ & Steakhouse.” Photos courtesy Creekside Cookers BBQ & Steak House. For more information visit the website at www.creeksidecookers.com or call 512-722-3683. The restaurant is located at 500 River Road and is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner.

Spring/Summer 2020 Welcome to Wimberley 11
F
BY BONNIE EISSLER rom Ranch Road 12, it’s a pleasant three mile country drive on Jacob’s Well Road to Cypress Creek Reserve Rum. A rustic wooden sign “Buy Your Rum Here” lets visitors know they’ve arrived. This family-run operation is owned and operated by David Watson and his wife, Laura, and has the distinction of being the only distillery in Wimberley. David is a sixth generation Wimberley native whose ancestors were among the town’s earliest settlers. Laura, originally from Illinois, met David when she vacationed in Wimberley 24 years ago. The Watsons do everything at their small batch process distillery, from fermenting and distilling to bottling and labeling. “We wanted to make top quality rum from scratch,” David says, “to set up the whole operation on our property here in Wimberley.” David spent most of his life working as a welder, the last 20 years as an offshore rig welder. “An offshore welder must be able to build anything metal,” and it’s easy to see from just a quick tour of the grounds and warehouse that he has made good use of his welding skills. He designed and built the head and condenser out of copper for the the 600 gallon stainless steel still tank. He also built the two level seating area, incorporating the huge towering limbs of a large oak tree into the upper level of the patio, now a favorite spot for visitors to relax and sample the rums. He constructed some, and installed all, of the equipment and tanks in the distillery, including a 5000 gallon holding tank. David says the logistics of the ingredients, basically molasses, water, and yeast, are more favorable for rum, a sugar cane based product, than for other liquors. The water is crystal clear creek water and the molasses is blackstrap (extracted then boiled sugar cane juice), delivered thousands of gallons at a time in tanker trucks from Houston. From these simple ingredients,Cypress Creek makes three different kinds of rum: Crystal (named for the crystal clear creek water), vanilla flavored rum, and single barrel rum that’s aged a minimum of two years. Zach, who tends the bar and helps with production says that their homemade Tahitian varietal vanilla extract takes about six months to make and is especially good. The aged rum is stored in 53 gallon wooden whiskey barrels. “Whiskey barrels are used by rum industry primarily because when the barrels have had whiskey in them, they are sterilized by the alcohol once the liquor is poured out,” David says. Most of the distilling is done in the fall and the spring because too cold or too hot temperatures can either slow down the process dramatically or kill the yeast. It’s similar to making homemade bread with yeast where the temperature can cause the bread to rise too much or not enough, affecting the quality of the bread. They must be doing something right, because the quality of their liquor is excellent. One visitor from Trinidad, a country renowned for good rum, had high praise for Cypress Creek rum, noting that it compares favorably and he actually liked it better than the 12 year aged rum from his homeland. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this business has been meeting a lot of great people from all over the world – China, Australia, Russian, England, Scotland, and many other European countries – who drink in the peaceful hill country setting and relaxing atmosphere along with a variety of rum-based cocktails. Photos courtesy Cypress Creek Reserve Rum. Cypress Creek Reserve Rum is located on 1400 Jacobs Well Road. Call 512-847-6874 or visit the website at cypresscreekreserve.com for more information. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 6 pm. Come by to sample the rum, linger even longer over a delicious beverage.

Eagle Mountain Flag & Flagpole A
BY ERNIE ALTGELT
little pride is a virtuous thing. It reinforces the very fabric of what comprises us and ultimately encourages our behaviors and attitudes arising from those actual things which make us proud in the first place. In essence, we are what we are most proud of – ourselves, our families, our communities, our associations and if blessed with being an American, our nation. And as a relating adjunct touching on this recognition, many of us choose to publically display a physical symbol of those very same sources that instill in us this deeply-felt personal emotion. Thankfully for those who call Wimberley home (and beyond), a ready outlet exists for the acquisition of perhaps the most fitting representations illustrating our pride – namely, free-flying flags. The company, aptly named Eagle Mountain Flag & Flagpole and conveniently located a few blocks west up main street from the town’s square, is a “banner” emporium that remains devoted to exclusively providing almost everything that’s needed for the attainment and display of symbolic standards and pennants, all representing a variety of prideful affiliations, national and otherwise. Really, to its ever expanding, worldwide customer base, Eagle Mountain has become the “rallying” resource for one and all wishing to showcase their unfurled pride, commercially, residentially and especially, patriotically. First established in 1995 by area couple Mike and Vickie Young, as proud Americans they recognized that a market existed for the public display of flags – especially our nation’s “Old Glory.” And from day one, business was good. After September 11, 2001 however, demand soared with orders coming in from across the United States. And since then, that enthusiasm, along with Eagle Mountain’s ever increasing orders list, hasn’t dimmed. But after 20plus years the Youngs were ready for some justly-earned retirement and, to their delight in 2018, “passed the colors” off to another like-minded husband and wife team who at that time, were seeking a new commercial opportunity. Lisa and Dan Pitcher were those folks and, after “striking” a mutually beneficial deal, the ownership was transferred. However Mike and Vickie remain unofficial, but appreciated consultants gladly providing advice as needed to the Pitchers. But for visitors to the establishment today, it’s obvious that Eagle Mountain Flag & Flagpole is doing just fine with Lisa and Dan in charge. Once inside the colorful interior, shoppers pleasure in a world of all-things flag. Red, white and blue predominate with U.S. and Texas flags in all sizes taking most of the space. However, other themes are also on display as well including historical, military, sport, school and more along with lots of the essential hardware for mounting, lighting and other related needs. As Lisa admits, “We really are your one-stop flag outlet – from creation to installation.” And re-
14 Welcome to Wimberley Spring/Summer 2020
garding the “creation” aspect, custom work equals Eagle Mountain’s stock offerings with one-of-a-kind requests competing with the traditional. So obviously, if you’re looking for a quality stock flag and the pole to mount it on, Eagle Mountain has definitely got you covered. Many sizes, styles, fabrics and price ranges are available. Generally, there are more than a thousand ready-to-be-purchased finished items on hand. And, if what you need isn’t in stock, it can be made for you – from tiny to football-field size, in any quantity required. But also, as an example, if you’re hosting a family gathering and need a special banner, the company can help there too. Provide Eagle Mountain with a sketch and they’ll handle the rest. Size, color, messaging and any other specific requirement won’t be a problem. Are these guys good or what? As proof, last October Eagle Mountain was selected to produce hand embroidered, very governmental-specific, flags for each branch of the military service for display in the White House. Wow! One special accomplishment that Eagle Mountain is excited about is their patented top-of-pole lighting system. Named StarGazer®, at night when illuminated, only the flag is seen. Additional “light pollution” is non-existent allowing the natural beauty of the evening sky to shine unimpeded. Those who live in the Hill Country can certainly appreciate that. So, if you’re hankering to fly your own “always made in America” flag, Eagle Mountain Flag & Flagpole is the place to help you realize your dream. As Dan attests, “When viewing a flag on a customer’s property, especially one representing our nation, that we enabled from start to finish, is very rewarding. But of equal importance, it makes all of us at Eagle Mountain a little proud too.” Salute! Eagle Mountain Flag & Flagpole is located at 333 FM 2325 in Wimberley. For more information (ordering, hours of operation, etc.), visit the website at www.emflag.com or call 512-847-0010.

or unique jewelry design you won’t see anywhere else, visit Calley’s Jewelry on the Wimberley Square, specializing in custom designs and transforming heirloom pieces into something more appealing to each customer’s taste. They primarily work with premium materials such as platinum and gold, in addition to offering restringing services and silver repairs. Owners Cheryl and Craig Calley have more than 40 years of experience in the jewelry industry. They started their business in Waco in 1980, a year after they got married. The couple had been working for two retired Zales executives in a traditional jewelry store with giftware, silverware, and china when they began to transition into their own design work. They moved to Wimberley in 2000 and opened Calley’s Jewelry, originally at the Junction, before relocating to the Square. The store is one of a few certified shops that utilize the laser welder, a unique tool in the jewelry business. While a lot of jewelers are now turning to CAD technology for wax design, Craig still prefers to create his designs by hand. His process involves using a block of wax that he carves down to give his designs a one of a kind look. At Calley’s, your piece never leaves the store, which is a ben-

efit to the customer who brings in a beloved heirloom piece for a remodel. “What we do most of is either in repairs, fabricating, or manufacturing something unique for everyone that comes into our store, Craig explains. “Jewelers like us are becoming few and far between. We provide a service that chain stores don’t.” Craig’s parents were artists and his creativity combined with the couple’s repair experience enables him to envision the final product throughout the process. “We focus on a focal point and then work around that to compliment it,” he explains. “We sell a lot of color. I use diamonds primarily as an accent.” Calley’s carries loose gemstones cut by Larry Woods, a local award-winning stonecutter. They also offer fine jewelry designs by Henri Lou, Dian Malouf, Echo of the Dreamer/Mars and Valentine. The items in Calley’s jewelry cases are unique, enabling customers to feel confident they won’t see their design on anyone else. Calley’s Jewelry has had the support of both the Wimberley community and their repeat customers, many of whom come from Houston and Waco. After 20 years, the couple is active and engrained in the Wimberley community. Their daughter and her family live in Wimberley and their son lives in Austin with his family. “We’ve been through milestones with our customers as well as they have been through ours, which is why so many are more like family,” explains Cheryl. “Our customers have watched our family grow over the years. Beware, you may encounter grandchildren when stepping into our store.” Photos courtesy Calley’s Jewelry. Calley’s Jewelry is located on the Square at 13904 Ranch Road 12 next to Los Olivos. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. For information, call 512-842-2281 or visit the website at calleysjewelrytexas.com.

Gracious Ladies J
BY COLLEEN BROOKS
essica Bennett had a vision. She wanted to bring a resort feel to a small community by creating a boutique where women could shop for easy-care loungewear to live their lives in, along with relaxed living products for their home. She was living in Arizona with her husband when she felt this calling. At the time, she had over 30 years of experience in highend retail and a thorough knowledge of luxurious fabrics, thanks to the gracious ladies in her life. She explains, “Gracious Ladies was inspired by the influence of the women in my life, particularly my Mother’s elegance. My mother and my aunts inspired my love for beautiful things.” The couple considered many small Texas towns before deciding on Wimberley. Jessica smiles, “Our boys were both born in Texas and we had roots that drew us back here. Wimberley was that sleepy little art community that we loved to take day trips to while living in Austin.” They made her dream a reality. Her husband renovated the little house that would become the store, then built the family’s home in Driftwood. They opened Gracious Ladies Living in 2014. Gracious Ladies is a perfect destination for that hard to find gift. Jessica explains, “We provide luxury products for your home, yourself, and the new arrival in your life.” Jessica was raised in Kansas City and has fond memories of the women in her life. She recalls, “Every summer my Aunt Dorothy took me to buy my first day of school outfit. It may have been 100 degrees on the first day of school, but I was going to wear that outfit! My Aunt Betty sold beautiful merchandise at a department store in Tulsa and gave me my first experience of seeing a woman I knew in the profession I would later pursue as a career. Gracious Ladies is paying homage to the influence of the gracious ladies in my life. Celebrating their elegance, style, and ease of living.” Locally, the store is known for its luxury apparel, which is made from the finest fabrics. “My Mother is the face of Gracious Ladies adorning all of our advertising and marketing products,” Jessica explains. “She is 92 years old and still influences the standard I

set for the products we carry and the experience we want to provide our guests. One of our most recent logos for our women’s tee says it all ‘Gracious Happens.’ Our customers often refer to the store as the soft shop, which is reflected in our clothing line and comforts for your home.” Inside Gracious Ladies, you’ll find elegant linen loungewear, Milk jersey pajamas, yoga pants, and wraps for home or a day out. “We’re so excited about our Barefoot Dreams line featuring pillows, blankets, wraps, cardigans, scarves, and more in wonderful bamboo and chenille fabrics,” Jessica explains. The store is also home to Ilse Jacobsen slip-on shoes and sandals, in addition to men’s loungewear and Tommy Bahama sportswear. Tourists and locals alike love their luxury Wimberley tee shirts, pullovers, and hoodies. You’ll also find a Wimberley-Texas Hill Country Mug, which is handcrafted in Waco. The store also carries home accents, including French tabletop linens, Italian Pottery, artwork and tea towels from Mary Gregory, rustic cutting boards, stationery, journals, and Pickwick Candles, just a few of the items from which to choose. Pickwick is well known for its men’s candle, “Leather and Tobacco,” and its most popular southwest market scent, “Sweet Tea,” as well as seasonal scents. Gracious Ladies offers a beautiful collection of baby shower gifts, including Barefoot Dreams cozy baby blankets and onesies with beautiful designs and messages. The Maileg collection from Denmark will make a cute addition to any baby nursery. Jessica smiles, “We didn’t intend to get into the toy business, but this just fits in so perfectly here.” Guests often compliment Jessica on the boutique’s French country ambiance. She recently expanded with a new Patio Overlook Shop, featuring garden treasures and chimes, vintage signs, decorative accents, French mirrors, and pottery from Demark Bergs Pottery. Gracious Ladies has smaller pieces so visitors can have a beautiful piece of pottery that’s easy to get home. Jessica smiles, “This time of year is perfect to enjoy our area. Come step away from your hectic schedule and take time to sit and relax while you enjoy the beautiful view of Cypress Creek.” Photos courtesy Gracious Ladies.. Susanna’s Kitchen S
Coffee House Concert Series
BY BONNIE EISSLER usanna’s Kitchen Coffee House hosts outstanding musical performers every month and is renowned for bringing acclaimed singer-songwriters to Wimberley, a community with deep roots in the arts. The tradition of showcasing musical talent at Susanna’s Kitchen began in the early 1990’s to raise funds for various programs and “as a way to give the community a safe place to encounter church,” says Susan Raybuck, a longtime member of WUMC since before the beginning of Susanna’s Kitchen. Susan’s husband, Perry, is the director of Susanna Kitchen’s Coffeehouse concert series. He is a singer-songwriter and a part of the worship team at WUMC. “Susanna” has long been associated in Methodist Church circles with food and hospitality because founder John Wesley’s mother was named Susanna. She always served food and beverages to people attending his meetings to make them feel welcome and comfortable. Susanna had 19 children and she was one of 25 children. The warm, hospitable ambience of a third Thursday gathering is very much in the spirit of its namesake. Ten percent of the concert admission income and all income from the kitchen sales are donated to The Barnabas Connection, Camp Good Sam, Bright Beginnings Pre-school, and Operation Good Shepherd. These programs offer information and assistance with housing, employment, medical expenses and other crucial needs. Camp Good Sam and Bright Beginnings support families by providing community services to overcome economic poverty and to ensure nurturing early childhood education. It isn’t difficult to lure artists to the area. “The performers love the venue and the family-friendly atmosphere,” says Susan, “and having attentive and appreciative audiences that are here to listen.” The musicians often turn in a more personal show, with more stories and interaction, than would be possible in a large auditorium or a crowded nightclub on Sixth Street in Austin. When Kelly Willis and Jamie Lin Wilson performed in January this year, a couple of Wilson’s children spent some of the time sleeping peacefully under the merch table. The concerts attract attendees from Austin, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Blanco and other towns around Central and South Texas, as well as from Wimberley. There’s the music, of course, and refreshments are available at reasonable prices. There is delicious pie by the slice from Sugar Shack Bakery, tamales, pizza, soft drinks, tea, and organic coffee from the local H.E.B. The concert series features a diverse selection of performers – blues and gospel singer, Ruthie Foster, Latin rock band Del Castillo, and Texas poet troubadour Ray Wiley Hubbard. Perennial favorites who regularly return to perform are folk musician and two-time Grammy Award nominee, Eliza Gilkyson, multi-instrumentalist (guitar, harmonica, mandolin) Terry Hendrix, folk singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves, and Susan Gibson, who tours all over the nation but calls Wimberley home and is scheduled to return to Susanna’s Kitchen in March. Wimberley United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Ranch Road 12 and County Road 1492. Musical performances are on the third Thursday of each month (unless it is a holiday) and the doors open at 7 pm, with 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm showtimes. No advance ticket sales, get your tickets at the door ($20 or $25 for adults and $5 for students under 18). For more information, contact Perry Raybuck at PerryRaybuck@gmail.com or visit www. wimberleyumc.org/susannas-kitchen.

Sacred Passages Ranch A
for weekend getaways, weddings, retreats & more
BY ERNIE ALTGELT
“venue” is simply something that’s suited for a particular use. And, in the beautiful Texas Hill Country surrounding bucolic Wimberley, there are certainly many venues to be found. Visiting folks desiring a little exercise (wet or dry) won’t need to look very far. Likewise, for those wishing a private get-away or, perhaps to gather the extended clan for a little rural R and R, finding a “place” can be pretty easy too. How about hosting that ideal wedding or maybe staging a corporate or spiritual retreat far from the maddening city? Possibly no problem with those either. Quite simply, there are just lots of “targeted” venues to choose from. But, for the discriminating who have multiple “musts,” there might just be only one Wimberley-area setting with the versatility (not to mention the exceptional amenities) required for a multitude of superlative uses. Intrigued? Then stop on by the exceptional Sacred Passages Ranch and discover that perfect venue for almost anything. Located a few miles southeast of Wimberley off Ranch Road 12, Sacred Passages verdantly sprawls across 35 pristine acres of classic Hill Country terrain on property that has been in the Cook family since the 1980s. As owner and proprietress Rebecca Cook remembers, “My late husband and I wanted to raise our children in the country and felt this was the place to do it.” And, for the next 30 years, it was home. During this time however, the always imaginatively-inclined couple began establishing relationships with various like-minded artisans throughout the area (and beyond) and allowed them to participate in the creative transformation of the property, ultimately turning it into an inviting art-filled sanctuary enjoyed not only by the Cook clan but, their many friends as well. And, as the “improvements” were slowly added, often utilizing the abundant native flagstone and honey calcite crystal, an exciting process of evolution occurred that eventually resulted in a stunning combination of natural and manmade beauty that’s very apparent today. After Rebecca’s husband passed and with her children grown, she realized the “rightness” of sharing with a greater audience what so many had jointly built. Hence the opening of Sacred Passages as a commercial enterprise. That was eight joyous, guest-filled years ago. And by the way, the name was conceived while Rebecca participated on a spiritual ten day peace walk through Italy on the Camino de San Francisco. Upon returning, an inspired Rebecca added a chapel to the grounds which has greatly broadened the property’s appeal but, more on that later.
28 Welcome to Wimberley Spring/Summer 2020
So, just what is Sacred Passages? Well, as mentioned in the opening paragraph, many things. First, it’s a welcoming Hill Country accommodation available for couples or groups who wish to book exquisitely appointed, intimate lodgings. With only one (albeit spacious) “cabin” on the premises, renting it is almost like renting the entire property and, that’s quite a package. The structure boasts four bedrooms, a tricked-out kitchen, generous living areas, luxury bathrooms and a porch to die for. And, while incredibly neat (thanks in large part to the many locally-produced artworks on display), the wildflower-infused site it resides on is, as Rebecca states, “What folks really love.” Adjacent to the cabin is a pool with a palapa bar and seating area, an outdoor hot tub, a cascading waterfall splashing into a meditative (and bird attracting) Koi pond, several rustic tables, fire and barbecue pits and even, an outdoor “hanging bed” perfect for an afternoon nap. In total as Rebecca insists, “Everything contributes to making one’s stay more than enjoyable – it can really be heavenly!” Couple the comfy living spaces with the fun and educational footpaths that wend throughout the entire unspoiled, explorable grounds where wildlife (especially native birds) can be observed and many agree, “Why should we ever leave the ranch?” But of course, there’s Wimberley (dining and shopping) and other near-by Hill Country attractions (including two breweries right up the road) that beckon so, using Sacred Passages as a superb “base-of-operations” certainly makes a lot of sense too. Besides Sacred Passages’ function as a charming multi-night guest venue, the grounds are ideal for hosting group functions such as corporate retreats, educational seminars (even yoga retreats!) and, because of the aforementioned chapel, weddings. “Nana’s Chapel,” named in honor of Rebecca’s 92-year-old mother represents a nativestone labor of love that can seat up to 100 attendees. With plenty of adjoining space for the after-party (there’s even a stage for toasting and performing) getting hitched Hill Country style never has been better than tying the knot at Sacred Passages. And later, as many newlyweds have discovered, the cabin also makes for a wonderful honeymoon hide-away as well. Photos courtesy Sacred Passages. Sacred Passages Ranch is available for renting throughout the year. The property is located at 1218 Oakwood Loop in San Marcos, just a few miles from Wimberley. Wimberley Wagon W
NEW, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTION OFFERS FIXED ROUTE TO SHOPPPING, DINING & MORE
BY BONNIE EISSLER
hen Kelly Mattarocci moved from her home town in southeast Texas to Austin in 1988, it didn’t take her long to discover nearby Wimberley’s vibrant arts scene, community spirit and natural beauty. She has owned property in Wimberley since 2007, lived there full time since early 2017, and has observed first hand the changes that have occurred during those years. Although Wimberley still feels rather magical and more rural than not, it is nonetheless in one of the state’s fastest-growing counties in a state that is growing in population faster than any other state. Then there are the thousands of tourists who come every year to experience Jacob’s Well or Blue Hole Regional Park, brave the crowds for bargains on Market Days, or check out the local craft breweries and live music. More people, more shops, more places to go and things to do, more traffic congestion and problems finding a parking place. For practical reasons and lifestyle reasons, “there’s an increasing need for more public transportation in Wimberley,” Kelly says. Her plan to provide this type of transportation began to develop over the last year and her feeling was “Let’s launch this idea and see what happens!” The next step was renting a 14-passenger van to test to see if there’s a market for shuttle transportation in Wimberley. Driving is a big part of the culture in Texas, after all. People like their big trucks and cars and, for the most part, if our destination is within the state lines, we’re driving there. Kelly drove a bus for Laidlaw while studying accounting at The University of Texas at Austin, so the prospect of ferrying folks around town in a large van or bus doesn’t faze her. “Laidlaw was contracted to run the Capital Metro Leander Express, a direct bus from Leander into downtown, and the U.T. shuttle buses,” she says. The trial day and night runs for Wimberley Wagon took place from October to mid-December 2019, and the response from businesses and individuals was overwhelmingly positive. The shuttle service was promoted 21st-century style, on Facebook, and generated a high level of engagement. The five stops on the day route were Longleaf Craft Kitchen + Bar on Wimberley Square, Dovetails, Roughhouse Brewery, Middleton Brewery, and Devil’s Backbone. The four night route stops were Longleaf, Shady Llama, Hays City Store and Community Pizza. The launch was clearly a success. “Most riders were locals with friends from out of town,” Kelly says. “One couple, looking for a weekend getaway, came to Wimberley specifically because of the convenience of Wimberley Wagon.” Riders were delighted to have someone in the area to handle the driving and they appreciated the comfortable ride and friendly drivers. The next step for Wimberley Wagon was the purchase of their own bus, black with black leather limo perimeter seating, ADA accessible and with ample room for 10-14 passengers.
32 32 Welcome Welcome to to Wimberley Wimberley Spring/Summer Spring/Summer 2020 2020
Kelly Mattarocci, proud owner of Wimberley Wagon.
The new Wimberley Wagon bus features black leather limo perimeter seating, is ADA accessible and seats 10-14 passengers.
Guests of Wimberley Wagon park at the parking area at Woodcreek Drive and Winters Mill Parkway before beginning an excursion.
The day routes will start up again in March 2020 and will remain closer to Wimberley, “focusing on stops for shopping, swimming, restaurants and essentials,” Kelly says. With an hour long fixed route loop, passengers will get a wristband that allows them to get on and off the shuttle as many times as they like. When special events bring larger numbers of people to town, stops that are farther out will be provided. Photos courtesy Wimberley Wagon. Call 512-554-8707 or visit facebook.com/wimberleywagon/events for more information about Wimberley Wagon and for bus routes. Shuttle service begins March 6, 2020. Hours (tentative) are 11 am to 4 pm, and 7 pm to 11:30 pm. Credit card or cash payments accepted. Wimberley Wagon uses compressed natural gas, an environmentally friendly alternative fuel.

In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

Linda Germain, REALTOR, ABR, GRI, SRES, SRS
Real Estate Professionals
KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY Linda Germain has been a Realtor here in the Texas Hill Country with Keller Williams Realty for the past 16 years, since starting her Real Estate career in 2004. Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, Linda attended San Francisco State College, majored in Business, and then spent more than 25 years in retail management for major retailers. Outstanding customer service has always been a high priority in Linda’s retail career and remains her number one priority in working with her Real Estate clients. She is a member of the National and Texas Association of Realtors, as well as the Austin and Four Rivers Board of Realtors. Linda and her husband, Gene, moved to Wimberley 16 years ago and both are active, involved members of the Wimberley community. Linda has served a total of three terms on the Board of Directors for the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce, having served as the Board’s Chairperson for two years. She is past President and current Membership Chair for the Wimberley Community Chorus and served two terms as Secretary of the Wimberley Valley Arts & Cultural Alliance (WVACA). As a long-time volunteer for Alzheimer’s Texas, Linda facilitates the Wimberley Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, teaches caregiver classes for Alzheimer’s Texas and has been a partner in establishing and operating ‘Circle of Friends,’ a weekly Respite Program established through the Wimberley Senior Center that is in its fifth year of operation. “It is a joy to live here in Wimberley and an honor to serve and ‘give back’ to the Wimberley community.”
Barbara Latimer, Broker/Branch Manager HILLS OF TEXAS / SKY REALTY Broker/Owner at Hills of Texas Realty, Barbara merged her company with Sky Realty in 2015 to form Hills of Texas/ Sky Realty. Her 23+ years’ experience and knowledge of the market provides the highest level of service for her clients. “It’s work I love. There is nothing else I’d rather do, she says. “There are challenges to working in a rural market, but I thrive on those challenges. Every property is unique and interesting. I love problem solving and helping my clients.” Well, septic and Oak wilt inspections are typical occurrences for Barbara, but to urban agents they can be foreign. A local market expert and a Texas Monthly “Five Star Real Estate Agent” for the last 10 years, it is obvious Barbara loves her career and is eager to help buyers and sellers. Her clients definitely count on her expertise, but they also love her approach. “We interviewed several agents, but we wanted someone we could connect with,” says one client. “Barbara walked in the door, and her enthusiasm and attention to detail won us over. She’s definitely the reason we were able to finalize the sale.” Originally from Houston and a graduate of the University of Texas, Barbara and her family moved to Wimberley in 1997. In her free time, she and her husband, Gaylan, enjoy boating, live music venues and exploring the Hill Country.

Head to the Science Mill + explore Johnson City
J
ohnson City, long known as the hometown of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and a great place to see wildflowers, is quickly becoming a favorite day trip destination with activities that appeal to the whole family, including science, art, history, food and much more. One of town’s most notable new additions is the Science Mill, a hands-on museum housed in Johnson City’s historic 1880s mill. Since it opened in 2015, the state-of-the-art science center has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors who delight in its 50+ innovative, interactive, indoor and outdoor exhibits. In the Fractalarium, visitors experience a larger-than-life lighted representation of Romensco broccoli and see how fractals are a marvel of nature. They can control the 30-foot-tall Colossal Robotic Hand using a mini-hand joystick or make balls move through complex system of tracks and pulleys in the Incredible Ball Machine. They can explore the 1,000-square-foot Aquaponics Greenhouse, see axolotls and zebra fish (and learn why scientists like to study them) in the Bio Lab, and watch a 3D movie. In the Science Mill’s newest exhibit, SciDive 4D, visitors put on a VR helmet and use their arms to control the full-body motion table, exploring the coral reef from the vantage point of a sea turtle. When museum-goers get hungry, the on-site Lady Bird Lane Café, a small farm-to-table restaurant, offers lunches using local and regional ingredients. Nearby restaurants such as Pecan Street Brewing and East Main Grill are also popular options. Just around the corner from the Science Mill is the Visitor Center of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which tells the story of our 36th President beginning with his ancestors until his final resting place on his beloved LBJ Ranch in Stonewall. The Visitor features exhibits on President Johnson’s life and his legislative accomplishments as president. One block to the north is President Johnson’s Boyhood Home, where visitors can take guided tours to see how LBJ and his family lived prior to moving to the LBJ Ranch. Heading west from the Visitor Center, the sidewalk leads to the Johnson Settlement. where visitors can experience some of the historic landscape in the restored prairie and see the log cabin that was home to LBJ’s grandparents from 1867 to 1871. The historic Withers & Spauldings General Store in downtown Johnson City offers a glimpse at how a general store looked in the 1920s and serves as an information center, where visitors can learn about local shopping and dining options as well as additional attractions in the surrounding Hill Country community. The Johnson City art scene has blossomed in recent years, and the town now has seven art galleries, six of which specialize in contemporary art. Each gallery is owned and operated by professional, career artists, and the group shows international artists who work in a variety of styles, subjects and techniques. Every last Saturday of the month is Art Walk, when all galleries are open 4 pm to 8 pm, with free wine and snacks. Susan Kirchman Studio Gallery focuses on the owner’s paintings and mixed-media works. A Smith Gallery produces juried exhibitions of alternative photography, as well as Smith’s photographs. Lee Casbeer Fine Art offers the owner’s representational paintings and murals. Echo concentrates on mid-century modern furniture and antiques and contemporary art. J. L. Haynes Studio Gallery shows owner Janet Haynes’ mixed media works and that of 42 Welcome to Wimberley Spring/Summer 2020

other contemporary artists. Mark Smith Studio Gallery offers Smith’s minimalist works and his Flatbed Press Collection. The newest gallery in town is Art Beat Studio & Gallery, where the owners show their own work and consigned design items, and conduct art classes. This spring, a new printmaking studio—Smith & Tully— is opening on gallery row. Photos courtesy The Science Mill. The Science Mill is located at 101 S. Ladybird Lane and is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm. See www.sciencemill.org for hours and special events. The LBJ National Historical Park Visitor Center is located at 100 East Ladybird Lane and is open every day from 9 am to 5pm. More information is available at www.nps.gov/lyjo.
